I’m 69, was a Queen fan back then, didn’t know anything about Freddie’s sexuality at the time. Times were so different, the words gay, bisexual, etc were not in the mainstream news so much. I just loved him, that’s all I knew. I was temporarily devastated when he passed away from AIDS. It was a huge loss in rock music lover’s lives. Long live Freddie thanks to UA-cam!

No one cared about his sexuality but it was widely known. He didn't make it an issue and didn't have to because his talent transcended it. Something that people should try doing today.

No he didnt make it an issue but here in America I wouldn’t say it was widely known. We didnt have social media back in the 60s and 70s.

He felt repressed everywhere else and basically took refuge in my hometown, Munich, for many years. There he also did his solo stuff. Our former long-term city mayor had to deal with lasting rumours of him being gay because he liked to have lunch in a world-famous gay hotel + restaurant + spa (of the other variety), the Deutsche Eiche in Munich. Freddy frequented this place, and his favorite dish is still on the menu today. I have been there many times and i am not even gay. Just above average dining at reasonable prices with very friendly staff and you can basically be sure that there is an orgy going on one floor down, in the basement. I can also recommend the hotel, well maintained, excellent service, some weird design choices like transparent acrylic sinks illuminated with color-changing LEDs. Upper average on the prices, and all staff on the hotel side are good-looking gay guys in pink uniforms.
They did buy a part of an adjacent appartement building to break through the foundation and make their own cellar, the basement, double size. Down there its an adult only amusement park with pools and spa and areas catering to all kind of fetishes a homosexual or bisexual might have, think Hugh Hefners playboy mansion but in gay. Religious people might place Sodom & Gomorrah right there, but from the outside and on the ground level its just a nice hotel with an excellent but reasonably priced restaurant.
Munich has an inofficial Freddy Mercury statue already, a big bronze privately owned, but just recently decided to commission a bigger Freddy Mercury statue for permanent public display.

I've always felt bad that Freddie couldn't be his authentic self and let us know what he was going through. I know times were different, but I have faith that those of us who loved Freddie would have continued to love him fiercely. He was truly a gift from God. I hope he is looking down on us and loving watching the next generation fall in love with him, too.

I think at the time, most listeners just enjoyed the music without delving into his personal life which he did keep very private, or for that matter, that of George Michael, Elton John, Mick Jagger, and David Bowie, etc. Freddie was loved for being a very creative writer, lyricist, musician, singer and front man. People put other meanings into the music years after the fact and seem to dwell on it. There were and are a lot of wonderful artists who should be enjoyed for their art, and the rest of it is really no one's business let alone to make disparaging remarks.
You mentioned " Princes of the Universe," did you see the official video and that of "Gomme the Prize"? Both songs are from Highlander as are "One Year Of Love", "Who Wants to Live Forever, and "A Kind OF Magic" was written by Roger and derived by a line in the movie

It’s just a “have a good time song.” Freddie always intended his songs to be interpreted by the listener. He NEVER explained the messages or even if there were any messages. But this song was widely considered,”The Happiest song of All Time.” Some find drug references or se+ual messages or rebellion. To me, it’s pure joy and freedom.

Each band member wrote songs for the band and each could’ve been a successful solo artist. That’s why their catalog has such range. Freddie was a recording perfectionist and this was pre-digital age. The way they did Bohemian Rhapsody was a major masterpiece in engineering. Roger Taylor, the drummer, sings the high notes in the backing vocals.

Freddie Mercury (lead vocals/ piano) of Queen was a huge fan of Little Richard from the golden age of 50's rock n' roll music... "Don't stop me now" was his homage in 1978 to the sound and style of Little Richard... Queen were always groundbreaking since they debuted in 1973 and never stopped experimenting w/ musical styles (They even had a #1 disco hit in 1980 - 'Another one bites the dust')
Vanilla Ice sampled a Queen song ('Under pressure') for his #1 rap single 'Ice ice baby' (Vanilla Ice was sued by Queen because he did not give the band songwriting credit for using the sample)
Queen was a British band that was well ahead of their time... Freddie Mercury (lead vocals) was an Indian Parsi whose family moved to England... He graduated college but wanted to become a rock n' roll singer in the London scene, where he met the local band Smile in the late 60's - Brian May (guitar) and Roger Taylor (drums) were also university graduates looking for a career in music w/ Smile... but few cared at the time... Freddie joined the band after their bassist/ vocalist quit and renamed the band Queen in 1970 after John Deacon (bass) joined ... Freddie designed the Queen logo w/ each member's astrological sign... but this was years before Freddie realized that he was gay and was once engaged to his girlfriend Mary Austin (They remained close friends after they broke up in the 70's and she took care of Freddie until his death in 1991 from AIDS... Freddie gave her a bulk of his fortune in his will)
It took a while before the music industry finally signed Queen in 1973... the band recorded their debut album w/ extravagant sounds and production and proudly claimed that no synthesizers were used on that record... However, the album sold poorly. Queen released 'Queen II' in 1974 and would make tracks w/ layers of vocal harmonies that gave them a unique sound... That same year, they released 'Sheer heart attack'... and got a surprising top 40 hit - the playful, cabaret-style song 'Killer Queen'... Queen spent months touring Europe and N. America and then discovered that they were huge in Japan.
It was the epic track 'Bohemian rhapsody' which finally put Queen in the big time in 1975 by going #1 on the charts... the album 'A night at the Opera' became a huge hit worldwide... Queen would continue to rack up an impressive tally of hit singles in the 70's and platinum records like 'A day at the Races'... 'News of the world'... and 'Jazz'...
By this point, Freddie Mercury was more comfortable w/ his sexuality and Queen moved to (West) Germany as tax exiles... The scene there inspired Queen to embrace pop music and used electronics and beats for what became a pop album 'The Game' in 1980 which yielded a #1 disco hit 'Another one bites the dust'... Unfortunately, the new pop sound cost Queen their popularity in N. America and the era of Reagan's America coupled w/ rumors about Freddie's sexuality got Queen ignored in the US for the rest of the 80's after the ill-fated pop album 'Hot space' in 1981... Queen never toured N. America again.
Queen was still huge everywhere else when they released 'The Works' in 1984, despite their new pop sound... They enjoyed a triumphant short charity set at Live Aid 1985 where they stole the show at Wembley stadium. In 1986, they sold out 2 nights at Wembley stadium for the album 'A kind of magic'... Queen played their final tour of Europe in '86 and never performed in concert again.
After Freddie Mercury was diagnosed w/ AIDS in 1987, it was kept secret from the public... but rumors still persisted that Freddie was ill as the AIDS epidemic became a reality worldwide. Queen worked on new music despite Freddie's diagnosis and went back to more of their early musical style of rock w/ the albums 'The Miracle' (1989) and 'Innuendo' (1991)... However, Queen would not tour and only appeared in music videos... By 1991, it was evident that Freddie Mercury was ill when he appeared thin & frail on Queen's music video which was filmed in '91 - 'These are the days of our lives'... Freddie Mercury returned to England in failing health and admitted to the press that he had AIDS just before he died in late 1991.
Queen performed their last concert as a tribute to Freddie Mercury in 1992 at Wembley stadium w/ guest singers singing Freddie's parts... Queen released their final studio album 'Made in Heaven' in 1995 w/ tracks recorded by Freddie before his death... Bassist John Deacon retired from the music business as well.
Lately, Brian May (guitar) and Roger Taylor (drums) have been touring w/ singer Adam Lambert as Queen + Adam Lambert... Adam Lambert is openly gay and a huge fan of Freddie Mercury and his music, so for him to perform Queen classics in concert brought a new spin on Freddie's legacy of music.

Don't forget to add the Vanilla Ice actually lost the case as it was proven he sampled it - wich is the best thing to me as this song was really popular and not everyone actually knew the truth. Glad QUEEN won it :)
      As for other facts:
      - Brian May used the guitar that he personally crafted with his father and thats why his parts on the guitar are so unique fo the age and basically till now.
      - Great part of fortune of Freddie was spend to create his legacy a "THE MERCURY PHOENIX TRUST" which helped in funding to fight HIV and help people - helps them till this day.
      - During the live AID concert when singing the part of the song that says "that he is going to die soon as he made mistakes in life" Freddie says "That's truth" as it acknowledges his sickness and that he doesnt want to die yet. It was a powerfull act as he was sick during the day and not feeling well. Even though he is the reason why LIVE AID was such a great event as they rocked it!

Freddie Mercury's motivation was music making; Freddie Mercury's intent was to superbly entertain; Freddie Mercury's emotional, personal drive was his firm realisation that he was a free-man, with one life to live and we're all the same.. Freddie knew Brian, Roger and then John Deacon had the all the ingredients for THEM to bring legendary music/entertainment to the world. Yes, he and they were educated and motivated. Today Queen AND Freddie Mercury are Legendary here more than 32 years after his death.

I love that you like Freddie’s song Princes of Darkness from Highlander. All 4 guys wrote killler songs. Brian wrote Who Wants To Live Forever, John Deacon wrote One Year of Love ( a sexy love song), and Roger wrote Its A Kind of Magic. These boys could do it all. I miss Freddie, he truly was magical and born to make music. When destiny put the Queen members together it was like an explosion of creativity happened. Nobody sang like Freddie. 40 years later and still nobody has his charisma and golden voice. As Dave Grohl said “ If you want to learn how to be a rockstar just watch Freddie Mercury.” If you want to hear a band able to write every kind of song style from 1930’s styles, gospel, hard rock, ballads, waltz mixed with rick, blues, funk, and of course anthems then listen to Queen. Begin with their 1970’s albums and go to their final album just after Mercury’s death I. 1992. Btw nobody cared that Freddie was bisexual anymore than that Roger loved the ladies. For us teens it was all about the music. Try White Queen at Hammersmith Odeon and You Take My Breath Away 1976 at Hyde Park ❤

When they judge the best singers ever he usually comes in 1st hardly ever lower than 2nd. Before died fromAids he left a catalogue of music that will tear at your heart. He was in such bad shape at the end but he still kept on recording. And he wrote most of his own material. Brian the guitar player with the long hair co wrote songs with him so did Roger the drummer. They also wrote songs on their own too. Radio Ga Ga was written by Roger who was a darn good singer in his own right and did it while playing the drums. You really need to dive into this band. I wonder, was it you or another relative of a Wreckage/Ibex band member who a few years ago shared here on YT the information (not usually appearing in biographies) that Freddie worked in Selfridges in the cutlery department before getting a job at the Kensington Market (and then the stall there, with Roger)? This was after he'd been with the band up north for awhile, and had come back down to London with this other band member to get work/ earn some money. According to the story, Freddie hated that job!
I'd particularly like to trace that person who posted the info to confirm it, and clarify the likely dates, because while I was at college I had a part time job at Selfridges, around late 1968-69, and I'm pretty sure I encountered Freddie there one day, coming up from 'Kitchenware' in the basement while I was coming down the escalator from 'Hats'! I'd love to have the opportunity to check whether my memory based on those dates is likely to be correct. Thanks!

The first time Freddie sang "I want to make a supersonic man of you."
The second time, Freddie sang " I want to make a supersonic woman of you."
The third time, he sang "I want to make a supersonic man of you."
“Don’t Stop Me Now” is one of Queen’s masterpieces, a song that’s aged well with time and landed third on Rolling Stone’s list of the Top 10 Queen Songs. It’s a simple song, an energetic song that sees lead singer Freddie Mercury on a high that he wants to stay in, letting nobody pull him down.
Freddie's personal life was complicated. He lived with Mary Austin for 6 years and they were engaged before he finally admitted to her that he was attracted to men. Mary remained Freddie's closest friend for the rest of his life and he left the majority of his estate to Mary including his beloved home, the Garden Lodge in Kensington. He referred to Mary as his "common law wife".

It's my favourite Queen song for very long and I've always heard as being about a general hunger and energy for fast lane hedonism, not hetero or homosexual nor from before or after his preference change. I'm not saying coming out because he considered it a private matter and his former fiancee remained fond of him so I respect that.
I'm not a big Queen fan, but I love them for not sticking to their categorization as guitar rock band, but putting in their own quirks in and exploring other genres. By doing that they made quite a few songs I like very much and they made a lof of songs other like very much. Many times their new album got criticized for the band taking a different direction again, for the critics to eat humble pie decades later.
I think their Live Aid concert in 1985 was special because they hardly had any "all album" fan base left but the whole world realized at the same time they had their own Queen songs they really loved.

Queen is a unique band with no desire to stick to any particular genre. All four members write songs and each have different tastes and all have written #1 hits. Freddie, Brian (guitar) and Roger (drums) are all singers and have been lead singers, John (bass) doesn't like to sing so he rarely did. I love this song, it always puts me in a good mood. Thank your or your reaction. Freddie did have relationships with women and was even engaged before he finally (mostly) settled with men. The woman he was engaged to remained his most trusted friend and confidant for the rest of his life and he left most of his wealth to her. She is also the only person who knows where his ashes are buried as per Freddie's request. He always considered Mary as his common law wife even though their relationship changed when Freddie admitted to her that he believed he was bisexual. The lyrics include both supersonic man and supersonic woman so there it is. Make of it what you may. This song wasn't a huge hit when the album dropped but over the years it has become a huge fan favorite. Freddie was having a good time, going to clubs and living the rock lifestyle as well as the club lifestyle. While he was never a drug addict or alcoholic, he was having the time of his life. Freddie was a man who was focused on his goals and his basic feeling was if you don't want to come along, then just get out of my way.

Freddie's education was in graphic arts and design. The odds of having 4 people in perfect chemistry sync with each other and as a band as a whole is astronomically small, but the Gods put them together and we, Queen's fans, reap the incredible rewards.

There was no one better than Freddie Mercury at commanding a stage. His talent was incredible. Check out Queens 20 minute set at Live Aid and Somebody to Love & Save Me at Montreal 1981. And definitely check out Bohemian Rhapsody. Queen was way ahead of their time. And each member wrote hit songs. They are all remarkable musicians ❤

He says both man and woman at different times during the song. He had relationships with both men and women during his life. Also he says he’s a sex machine during the song

There was/is a music magazine, MOJO, that did themed issues, and back in the day they did a Queen issue, and in the Queen issue when they reviewed this song they said "Never has coke fueled gay sex sounded more fun". Lol lol The best. He was THE BEST.
It IS about that.....and it is glorious.

I’ve always loved this song, as you age the lyrics come to mean different things.
As a teenager it never meant anything other than having fun

No one compares to Freddie. and when people redo his music in their own way, it just means they don't measure up to his perfection. Only 2 or 3 Artists can not be matched, Annie Lenox, Ann Wilson from Heart,, Lea Salonga. As far as him singing about women and attraction, he sang songs, He did not try and force his own lifestyle on others. Pure Virtuoso and artist. And Amazing.
As far as meeting your maker, that is between your maker and you, no one else.
