They were both out-of-worldly talented and skilled but if you wanna talk about vocal RANGE then I can tell you that Michael had a wider range than Mercury and could hit far more notes, but chose not to show that in his songs, staying on certain keys for most of his career. While Freddie was all about showing his range in every song and that’s probably why people think he was a more “skilled” vocalist or whatever when in fact Michael’s range was up to 4 octaves while Freddie’s was up to 3. Do with that what you will :)

He sounded clean because his vocal range was solid and there are NO filters or studio tricks trying to 'make' him sound good. Freddie just WAS. I only know a few lead singers that can hit the notes like him in my life.
