- In 2017, politics is a dirty word. Trust in politicians and government institutions is at an all-time low. Is there anything we can do about it? Newly elected Green MP, Chlöe Swarbrick, proposes it all boils down to trust and community.

Im thinking of a hard working person that really belive in something and are willing to put in the time it takes. Im impressed by them and how they give so much of their time on something they really belive in, and at the same getting so much hate from lazy people.

Most of them are way more intelligent than it is perceived by the public. And there are a lot of politicians, who really believe in what they do and work hard all day to improve the lives of the people. Sadly it's often not recognized.
Her suggestions won't work because our systems of government are not intended to allow that to happen.
This is all a blatant failure of the highly hierarchical representative system of governments and the abysmal representativeness of our voting systems used worldwide, and nothing more. That's why we are so cynical, not the other way around. Humans learn from the system, not the system from humans.
Everyone is well aware of this fact in an intuitive way, but since most people think that's all what "democracy" and voting can viably be, we don't change it and we look elsewhere for solutions. The problem is the system, and we will likely never fix the system from within because it is self-preserving.
An actual democracy with a legitimate voting system (say, STAR voting) wouldn't have these issues, because if many people truly are getting screwed by the system they could use the system to make their concerns relevant and fix things. A proper bottom-up distribution of executive power would guarantee that the distrust in the power of representatives would mean anything, and they would be kept in check. This is what fails today. There is no such bottom-up mechanism, and yet we all pretend that the pathetic excuse for "voting" we do on elections worldwide is somehow going to be enough, if only we all magically elected all the right candidates this time around after we patiently wait 4 years of non-representative politicians doing whatever they want with our "consent".
However, the first reaction people have to this sort of statements is to think "actual democracy" means "completely direct democracy with majority rule", which couldn't be further from the truth. This is why we get people like Churchill saying that type of nonsense she mentions at the end, which is taken as a clever jab at how bad humans are at living together. This is simply false and shows how deeply cynical our civilization has become due to our ineffective social hierarchy, which we seem to put so much effort defending.
Majority rule is partisan and authoritarian, and is fundamentally incompatible with the notion of democracy. But somehow, over the years, we came to believe they are one and the same. The only mathematical way to make every individual's voice count the same is by giving an equal weight to votes, and only a non-majority cardinal voting system can achieve that. This system is the only way to have elections that are based on consensus and not tyranny.
In short, if you want a better government, you must necessarily give equal power to everyone. That is the only way to tie social cohesion and the wellbeing of everyone to our own, and make politics not a tool for oppression, but of agreement.

I'm a middle aged guy from Belgium , center .eu, the other side of the world ; can relate to that 90%.
I want to get involved in politics as a second career. I want to be ingrained in my local community and it's schools and its prisons and its cities and suburbs. I want to learn how to help people as an educator and as a private citizen, so I can help people mobilize on a larger front with that experience. I've always been a leader and problem solver, but I'm not so egotistical that I think I can have the answers out of nowhere. Numbers are valuable, but so are experiences with people. And I mean all kinds of people. You can't solve addiction with criminalization and you can't solve racism with hate returned in kind. You need to know why those things happen and look to change those systemic issues and to treat people's vices with compassion

In America politics is something controlled by money and money only. Citizens don't get to pick the candidates, Governments and Political Parties pick them to get more money from businesses who would support their choices.
I wish we had more laws on campaign funds in this country. We shouldn't vote based on who is flashiest. They need to get in the trenches and talk to people instead of paying for attack add on TV

I'd sooner trust an old person who has retained consistent values, than a young person who doesn't have those years of conviction in their beliefs yet. Watching this solidifies my thoughts surrounding young politicians.
I think that is fair to want experience, but denying that young people can impact the world in a positive and meaningful way is just foolish
Positive and meaningful are subjective, and they change from person to person. Even within ones self those meanings can sway to polar opposites with age. We've seen this happen time and time again throughout history. Age either confirms consistent beliefs, or one grows and changes as they gain more world experience.
Shes fantastic, her ages means very little when she has everyone's concerns at heart as well as the country and environment and global scale. Being older doesn't mean you have consistent values, if anything the older you are the more you have changed your mind so in essence you have accumulated more inconsistencies above anything else. You also retain traditions from an age bygone that do not represent the majority of the population any longer.
You cannot be a politician and hold on to traditions from 'back in your day' and think they are proper and just to install on to everyone, young and old.
There's a reason why they say older people are wiser. Young people think with their hearts. Older people have seen what that can do, and think with their heads.
A quote doesn't mean anything tangible. It's just a poor excuse for a constructive reply.
A politician is someone who conflates the truth to gain power over some one or something. I like how this woman made it all about race and gender somehow.
If you truly know her and studied her, you will know her ideals dun work. She is also very dangerous - that how country falls apart with these elite people who are out of touch.

Take a young politician with nearly no experience and let her talk about her opinion without any reference on the actual state of research on a political topic which has been widely researched within political science and you'll end up with this TEDx talk. Complete waste of time.

This is the mind set women have and are trying to change, women were not fluffy , when men were called to fight in ww2 and there was shortage of men to build the planes ,tanks and other weapons.
