I think the worst part about Ed Sheeran's song is not only does it have nothing to do with Scarlet/Violet, but the ending of the game is so melancholy! It was a surprisingly bittersweet ending for a Pokemon game and just one of the most engaging emotional journeys they've done. And then his generic pop song (clearly written with playing it on normal radio stations in mind) with literally nothing to do with that ending - or literally anything else to do with the entire game!! - comes on and it's a very jarring bit of tonal whiplash. I went from crying for Arven to angry at whichever execs decided to cram his song in in a split second!

    • @EliteTrainerLin

Exactly! But I think I could have excused a super generic pop song... *if* it had actually been a pokemon song.

@@EliteTrainerLin Ooh yeah that's definitely legit! The tone would still be jarring but at least it'd be thematic eh? Even something generic and "radio ready" yet vaguely related to any of the main characters would've been... well maybe not good, but better lol

You should check out Celestial cover by Pekoe - while maintaining the lyrics, Pekoe used the SV game soundtrack for it and made it work. It sounds so much better.
I can see some of Celestial's lyrics working, like "finding magic in all the smallest things" relevant to the game's treasure hunt but it is a stretch and people won't really get it unless they have played the game and thought about the lyrics more. Also the generic pop song at the end of the game is jarring not only cause of that, but there is no voice acting... you just read and then suddenly hear ed sheeran for some reason lol

Yeah this sums up a lot of my feelings on "Celestial" too, it's annoying and I dislike it and its existence so much... It sounds like any of his other songs, and feels like they just asked him to take any song he working on and threw it into the game for sake of attaching his name... And what's worse, is no one I know likes it, I haven't met anyone who was convinced to play game because of it OR who even liked it or thought it was a good colab

I really do not understand what the point was of using that song for the credits of SV.
Like... was there anyone on the planet that got to that part and wasn't at least slightly distracted by the fact that a "normal" song was playing in the first place?
Considering the whole series up till that point had made it a tradition to play a banger track that often perfectly finished off the game's soundtrack as a whole..
There is no actual "credits" song for SV now, and that's just sad lol.
But hey, maybe in Gen 10 they'll use an Ed Sheeran Song for the title screen and then we will be looking back at the good old days when they "only" ruined the credits :)

The little Miku things are Pinocchio-P's mascot and they're named Aimaina.
It's also not unusual for song names to be different in other languages. Song names are a whole rabbit hole of their own, actually. Sukiyaki is a famous one, because it's the English title of a song that has nothing to do with sukiyaki in any way, shape, or form.
Anyway, I agree about Celestial. It has the same energy as the English OSTs of the Pokemon movies. I honestly like the OSTs, but it's especially strange when the Japanese OSTs are normal orchestral OSTs with at most a couple vocal songs by known artists. Like I kid you not, Sarah Brightman sings Darkrai's theme on the Japanese OST! Meanwhile, the English OST has the B52s, an entire album of O-Town before they dissolved, and Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. The B52s are the only ones who sing a song directly related to Pokemon, because they sing Lugia’s theme and the prophecy of the movie. All the rest are random.
Pokemon has had so many strange collabs that I don’t think this is the worst. I’m actually hard pressed to choose just one the worst, because there are just so many. I personally disliked Sega’s Who Are You plush, because the gimmick is the same as Moose’s Scruff a Luvs and I would’ve rather seen Moose get the license to make Pokemon.

    • @EliteTrainerLin
      @EliteTrainerLin  10 місяців тому +4

I figured out the mascot thing afterwards, but thank you for pointing it out! The mascots are really cute.
It's true that song titles can differ, but that typically only happens when the song itself is translated too so the title reflects the lyrical changes. (At least that's what it's like here, since I'm not a native speaker of English)
You're right about the OST and I hadn't thought of that! That was in the 90s though, surely they don't still do that....? Do they?! I have to admit pokemon movies is an area I don't keep up with.
I'm sure there are plenty of more bad collabs, but none of the other ones have made their way into the actual main series games so that is what makes the Ed Sheeran collab the worst in my opinion! In general I'm happy to see different collabs even if I'm not the intended target (I just wish they didn't just do gen 1 pokemon for 90% of them).

B52’s is not the only song. There’s Weird Al’s Polkamon. There’s Plus One’s With All Your Heart which has the lyrics “You know you’re gonna catch ‘em all” and they were a Christian band. There’s Dream Street’s (Jesse McCartney) They Don’t Understand which is literally a song about people not understanding the Pokémon fandom in its early days. There were plenty of songs on the 2nd album especially. Then the first movie has Lullaby sung by a girl who sings under a different name now that makes Jigglypuff look like she’s gonna do things to you in your sleep (seriously what was up with that song). There’s plenty of songs on those first 3 soundtrack’s that scream Pokémon.

As someone who was in Kindergarten when Pokemon came to America. I have played every mainline title since. I can tell you with 100% certainty. Gen 1 nostalgia is nice... If its not every 5 seconds and ends up overshadowing a title (X & Y). They pretend like we don't fondly remember any other generation throughout the course of our lives.
We get it. My generation is the current main parent/working generation, that buys the games for our kids... That doesn't mean we are like our Boomer parents and only know basic stuff. It seems that the song was originally intended for Generation 8 of the Pokemon games. However, GameFreak is known for releasing new games each year, so it may have been delayed and included in Generation 9 instead. Unfortunately, GameFreak tends to handle these transitions very poorly, such as with the Apple split evolution that was cut from Generation 8 and added to Generation 9. Fans are starting to grow weary of these practices, and as a gamer myself, I don't think it's a good idea to release new Pokemon games every year. On top of that, they had some great Pokemon designs that are being overshadowed by these rushed releases.

    • @EliteTrainerLin
      @EliteTrainerLin  9 місяців тому +1

I don't know about that to be honest. I mean it wouldn't have been game freak's fault if the song by Ed Sheeran was late as he's the one making it and not them. And if the games were delayed but they had a contract to include the song in a game before a certain date that would have put the song in an earlier game rather than a later one. And even if it was intended for gen 8, celestial is still thematically not related to the games at all and the song is still not a pokemon song so all the problems still exist!
I'm not sure what you mean by the apple thing as applin did have a split evolution in gen 8, they just added a third one in gen 9. I do agree that a new game every year is pushing it a bit too hard, but assuming some of them aren't main series and produced by other companies than game freak it should be ok I think. Mystery dungeon has always been a favorite of mine and those have never been made by game freak for example!

Starting somber but eventually building into something triumphant and loud but as majestic as the experience they just endured and survived, and leading into a more grounded and worldly piece rather than the overwhelming and ephemeral force that is conveyed in the Area Zero theme on its own. I personally think it does have something to do with Pokemon. The music video is not just a singer singing and Pokemon appearing now and then. Ed is singing about how much Pokemon means to him, and these characters are like friends to him. His music video also shows how things in life here and there can bring joy, like the Charmander that cooks his breakfast, and Snorlax that protects him from being ran over by the car.
As for not having anything to do with Scarlet and Violet, the theme of those games were to go out, seek and find happiness, that is something to treasure. Completing the three story-lines, you manage to find experiences that bring you joy, which also fits along with Ed Sheeren's song.
My sister told me she liked the song.
Actually, I recall her saying to me she watched the music video, the ending of SV and its credits and thought the music went along with what Arven went through in the story.

    • @EliteTrainerLin

If pokemon truly meant something for Ed Sheeran, and pokemon/trainers felt like friends, then how come he at no point in the song makes *any* kind of pokemon references whatsoever? In my opinion all it would mean in that case is that he chose not to include anything about pokemon on purpose - because it doesn't sell, or it doesn't fit his image, or whatever other reason.
The fact that some people are able to relate Arven's story to the song is genuinely nice for them. But Ed Sheeran wouldn't have known anything about the plot of the games so that's all a coincidence at best. It's not a "bad" song, I'm happy for people when they like it and I don't want people who do enjoy the song to stop enjoying it just because pokemon fans are salty about it!

@@EliteTrainerLinIt doesn't have to have references to Pikachu or Mesagoza, it just needs to go along with how he feels about Pokemon. Again, these characters are like friends to him that cheer up me in his life. I like to feel the same way with the Pokemon games, actually.
True, Ed Sheeran probably wasn't thinking about Scarlet and Violet or Arven when he was creating or singing that song.
Maybe the reason it was added to the games was because Shigeru Ohmori heard it and thought it would be amazing to encounter in the games' credits. There seems to be this slight tread with Nintendo games like Mario, Kirby and Smash where they add songs to their games. Not sure if Pokemon is trying to follow that.
You made me think of the credits of the Secret Life of Arrietty, if you have watched the movie in English. There's this one song that has nothing to do with the movie. Some song about a teen who enjoys talking to her boyfriend on her phone in Summer..

@@PeterOfAcrossThePokemonWorld It's not like the lyrics would have to literally mention pokemon by name for it to be pokemon themed. There are 27+ years of games to reference in clever ways that shows you care about the franchise - for example something as simple as swapping "green" for "viridian", or sneaking in elemental words like fire, water and grass would make pokemon fans know it's for them. I like to compare it to Yaffle's song "reconnect" that was created for the 25th anniversary. That song has some brilliant lines that are obvious pokemon references like "riding a wave, you surf on it" and "ain't no rare candy in real life". Neither line directly mentions pokemon yet pokemon fans know exactly what those lines mean!
Even if I do my very best to look at the song as Ed Sheeran's feelings about pokemon I still can't see it with lines like "hearts balanced on a razor blade" and "drunk on stars and we're dancing out into space". I just can't see him actually thinking playing old pokemon gold/silver makes him feel either like his heart is on a razor blade, nor like he's drunk in space. I think some fans are able to project their own feelings onto it because the song is so generic that it allows for it, and that's nice for them!

Can I play devil's advocate? Since I'm kind of sad that Celestial's lyrics are just shoved aside as a "generic pop song" but the lyrics more or less fits Arven's experience in SV.
I think we can criticize it for being "poppy"; but the lyrics/meaning of the song are on point in my opinion.
Ed Sheeran's s Celestial lyrics covers about a person dealing with their struggles/pain of daily life and personal demons; , and how someone in their life (or people/etc) allows them to feel like their troubles are so far away, and how that helps them to enjoy life; and even be able to find happiness even towards the slight joys of life, and with that their friends/environments becomes their "Heaven" that helps them to continue and pursue happiness in life (Hence the title being "Celestial")
Arven had to struggle with his neglectful parents, one was obsessed with their work, and the other straight up packed their bags never to be seen again, and on the attempts of trying to appeal to their parents, Arven got Mabostiff heavily injured during one of their expeditions to Area Zero, the one thing _in his life he truly cared for_
Years later, he meets You the Protagonist, Nemona, and Penny, over the course of it; he manages to help cure Mabostiff from his fatal injuries, he creates deep and personal friendships with his new group, he makes amends with Koraidon/Miraidon, and even gets a bitter sweet conclusion with his parents thanks to the AI Professors, and in the end, Arven ends up finding his slice of "Heaven" in life through you and his new friends and is able to move on/make a life for himself where he can be happy.
Celestial was made for Arven, and you can't tell me otherwise.

I highly doubt that was intentional at all, there is no way they told Ed Sheeran anything about the plot or details about character beforehand. But I'm happy you enjoy it and get to see your own connections in it!

What do you think about the songs Katy Perry and Post Malone did for Pokemon?

Katy Perry actually gets a pass (but just barely so) because electric is an "unusual" word to put in a song and it *does* tie in directly with the franchaise mascot. I would have liked it to be more pokemony... but I kind of struggle to see her just randomly make a song called electric if it wasn't for pokemon (I think it does also have the line "wanna be the best" which feels like it's a reference to the classic pokemon intro) so I *can* buy that it was made/adjusted for pokemon. It was minimal effort, but effort nonetheless!
Post Malone didn't do a song for pokemon, he just like sang a 90s not-pokemon-song cover (and some of his own songs iirc) for a pokemon branded album/concert. At least to me it didn't seem like there were any claims that the songs were "real" pokemon songs but actually just put together as a celebration concert for pokemons 25th anniversary. I still would of course have prefered if he had made an actual pokemon song for the album, but it's not nearly as bad as randomly forcing a song into the games.

So I suppose you hated Westlife’s Flying Without Wings for the English dub of Pokémon 2000? Or maybe you hated the Japanese Koko song because it’s emotional and doesn’t scream Pokémon in the lyrics? What about the English Journeys theme song The Journey Starts Today that DID get radio play in my area? I don’t agree with you. You just hate it because it fits Arven too much.

Wait, I know it's likely just fake marketing talk to say Ed Sheeran still plays [insert old Pokemon game here], but picking Silver as his example is hilarious. The vast majority of Silver cartridges haven't worked in over a decade because of the internal battery dying! While you can technically repair it (or buy bootlegs I guess), he doesn't seem the type to do that lol.

Isn't Pokemon short for Pocket Monster tho?

    • @EliteTrainerLin
      @EliteTrainerLin  10 місяців тому

Yes? If I read your comment right, my problem is that "pocket monster" (or "monster in my pocket") as a term is a lot more neutral than "monster in my heart" which sounds affectionate. They act like the title is all sweet when that's not thre "real" title/lyrics of the song.

Just because Ed Sheeran is a ginger British guy, doesn't mean his songs are all "mid".

@@UrbanFox_ im not familiar with ALL of his songs so I can’t comment on that but I think this one is. At least in my opinion.

Almost every pokemon collab they've done since like gen 7 has been bland , hollow and out of touch with their actual fanbase. Just look at Pokemon Shirts and that lame jewelry collab they did with that luxury brand nobody cares about they did recently.
Instead of making clothes based on the clothes YOU CAN WEAR IN GAME they make... Expensive dress shirts... From a brand nobody who plays their games cares about.

    • @EliteTrainerLin

To be fair I think the clothes in scarlet and violet are hideous so I wouldn't want those!
But I do think there is a market for luxury jewelry and stuff like that, the problem is usually they just make them a basic pikachu or charizard and so on, like you say they're just SO bland! There's no real "design" behind it and it's *again and again* just gen 1 pokemon. They could have been made 27 years ago and still would have looked exactly the same with the exact same pokemon.
