Addam and his party cared about her, sure, but the amount of roasting she received from all sides was rough for here. And after accidentally sinking the Tornan titan, indirectly killing Hugo, and seeing the broken look on Mikhail's face, that was enough to break her to the point that she created Pyra to hide behind so she wouldn't hurt anyone again, and to be everything she wasn't. And when she was reawakened, she's incredibly offhandish and defensive, not wanting anyone to get close to her, either through anticipating more verbal abuse, or from not wanting to create another disaster. But she didn't reckon on meeting someone like Rex. Someone who wouldn't even think of hurting or insulting her. Someone who cared about her just as much as he cared about Pyra. And someone who was willing to do anything to help her, even if it meant fighting a battle that he knew he had little chance of actually winning. This speech of Rex's is what finally drives it home to her. That there's someone who truly, deeply cares about her, with no hint of sarcasm or insults.
Exactly this. Even Addam himself is deeply flawed as her driver. His conversation with Lora shows how insecure he is about his own lack of ability, and he lets that insecurity consume him. When Mythra tries to use more power to stop Malos' rampage, Addam's tone is anxious, almost scolding, in calling out to her. He is too afraid of her power to face it, and leaves her to try to control it, and face Malos for the sake of the world, alone. Rex experiences similar insecurity about his power, but the difference is largely context. Rex shows no sign of yielding until he faces speed hax he can do literally nothing about and has Pyra taken, after being deeply hurt in front of him. I'd argue it takes more to beat him down. But the key difference, perhaps, is the party. Torna's party is too damn polite to Addam because of who he is. No one calls him out to say "what the fuck was that, man?" when he utterly fails Mythra, or when his solution is to run away again by putting her asleep to be someone else's problem. Conversely, Rex's party kicks his ass at the first sign of resignation, and reminds him what's important. An awesome detail is he looks more sober after Poppi's speech, even before the reveal of the Mcguffin, and that he's fighting all out even with little no hope of Pyra returning to let him use the Mcguffin sword. In large part thanks to an excellent, honest support system, Rex rises above his fear and pride to become someone who can truly share Mythra's burdens. I really wish I played TGC first honestly... because I didn't get this scene at first. Like... all he has to do is say the same shit he's been saying all game and he's rewarded with God mode? But Addam is the missing link. Anyone can be chipper when things are easy, but what do you do in the face of adversity? That's what defines Rex, and this game, for me. You could honestly roll credits after this scene, Pneuma low key stomps the rest of the cast XD. I wouldn't want that, though - the rest of the game kind of feels like a wonderful celebration of this bond Rex and Mythra/Pyra formed.

She had the wrong perspective of him at first until she heard the words..."I wanted to keep you safe" Those words meant so much to her cause thinking back during her time in Torna she really needed emotional support from somebody she honestly needed a hug. We understand why she tries to push Rex away and tries to hate him, but she can't. Not when he never once labels her and Pyra as weapons, tools, and most importantly never labels them as the Aegis. Even when he says Aegis he means the power at the end of the day in his eyes they're just Pyra and Mythra. So Mythra is happy and wants to be close to him just like Pyra does and she and Pyra do start harboring feelings for him. Still that desire to die builds more and more because of all of the pain Rex has endured for them. She's tired of seeing him suffer. Like you said this moment brings it all together. "Why is Rex willing to go so far for them?" It's not because of the promise he made or because they saved his life. It is because he loves them. He's doing all of this for them so that they can have a future and this let's them know that they have a life with him after this war is over. This is why she loves him. He loves her and Pyra despite their flaws and helped them overcome their fears. Mythra's quote in game about Rex: "He warms my soul"
This says Mythra down to the tee. So many believe she's hostile just to be, but so many scenes from that game says they did verbally abuse Mythra regularly so that was gonna happen. Too many think you are supposed to just endure verbal abuse and not become hostile.

How the world viewed her shaped how she viewed herself in her mind she was just the "Aegis"- a weapon of mass destruction that must be controlled. Despite the fact that Addam treated her like a daughter he was still one of the many people who saw her as just the Aegis. So, the two of them were emotionally distant with one another. She really had no emotional support from him or the group. Until Jin told her "Your real affinity lies in the future" It all ties into her visions of Rex she had when she was trying to calm herself down, but she couldn't cause all of her memories of her time with Addam and his group represented fear, isolation, and criticism. Seeing Rex she felt something a real connection. Rex is always kind, caring, and is completely devoted to her, but it's understandable that she's not used to any of this. Having someone around her that wants to connect with her and sees her power as something wonderful she finds it hard to believe that someone would care about her this much. Especially when that someone actually loves her not as the Aegis, but just Mythra.
@HORACE REID Yeah - 2 years later, I'd say that TTWY is my 3rd favourite track on the OST, behind Counterattack and Song of Giga Rosa. But in terms of how well it's used in context, it's my favourite one of all.

The fact that at the start of the game, Rex can't fend off even Vandham, but at this point he's able to solo Jin for a solid amount of times, matching him swing for swing at some points without even Nia support him. There's no thread there

One of my biggest issues with this game is that it's so hard to hear the character's voices over the music in some cutscenes. There were some parts where I'd have had no idea what was being said if there weren't subtitles.
powderpuffman121 that's why you put the cutscene voices up in the settings. I didn't have that problem. The issue is that those settings don't apply to the theater, so when you rewatch scenes sometimes the music is too loud
This cutscene and the awakening of Monado 2 in Xenoblade 1 will always be my favorite cutscenes for they both have the same feel to it. both party members fighting for their lives against 2 great threats, feeling of hopelessness and then, sad emotional moment, badass one liner and then start the triumphant battle music because new a blade awakened and you the player are just now ready to rock their shit
Honestly, I think the scream here fits. It’s a desperate plea from Rex for Pyra and Mythra to not give up on themselves and the world. Screams like that aren’t meant to sound powerful and courageous, they’re meant to sound weak and scared, desperately clawing for what meager strength it can muster.
I think Rex's VA actually does a really good job for most of the game but god it is so frustrating that he can't seem to raise his voice past a certain decibel level. Every time he has to scream it's like he's recording his lines with people sleeping upstairs and he's trying not to wake them up.

In the beginning yes, it wasn't great, but honestly, other than the "JOIN ME!" bit, I thought he did a considerably better job here nonetheless. When Malos's "What the hell... Has he finally cracked?" Line is done better than the majority of Rex's lines, either Malos's VA deserves an award or Rex's VA seriously botched this scene.
DeltaRaven Malos’s VA is amazing. Read the other comments here regarding Rex. Basically what he was saying in English was calmer than in Japanese so the yell at the end didn’t translate greatly
Granted, when Malos has been a one liner throughout the whole game, it's hard to compare it to Rex lol. Or maybe I just like Rex. Certainly no Shulk though. No one can be Shulk.
Rex sounds so off here. His Japanese voice actor is screaming at the top of his lungs in this scene and hearing rex speak in a regular tone here feels so off.
This is the kind of scene where you can tell the voice actors are unbelievably talented, they were just given little to no direction for the scenes they were recording because the dubbing was insanely rushed
Okay I just want to say that I absolutely love this scene TO DEATH. And while some parts of the performance isn't great, the line itself "So believe me, I won't let the world burn a second time" is honestly done so well and is the reason why I love Al Weavers voice and why I wouldn't ever want him to be replaced if this game was to ever fix up any voice acting. He captures the spirit of Rex so well, and I love it for that.
Al Weaver has taken a lot of undeserved flak for his turn as Rex. Only iffy moments for me were some of his screams in the beginning, and the "JOIN ME" bit in this clip, but otherwise I thought he did a great job conveying his naivety and cheerful nature, and even the emotional moments aren't bad. It's only the "JOIN ME" part that I felt could have stood to be better.

I've just realised, the issues with the lip-sync and english VAs is greatly lessened by not having subtitles. Your brain doesn't know what's coming next and it doesn't create that disconnect between your expectations and the cutscene. Godlike tech?

@@may83195 Of course it explains it, Malos' models are likely sequential in the root asset folder, either someone entered the wrong link in the code for the cutscene by accident or the game itself created a faux connection to the incorrect model as part of a glitch (Which is known to happen randomly in games of this complexity).
If you change to a different tab then Rex's voice acting is actually good for the most part with the exception of that "JOIN ME". Really Like he has the right emotion but it's like they told his VA what to say but left out how what his tone of voice should be.

It’s important to remember that Rex is pretty much begging the girl(s) he loves to not go through with suicide. He’s extremely desperate at this point, appearing to be losing two battles on two different fronts. Anyone’s voice would break in a situation like that.
For all those still confused as to why Pyra could even be revived, I think I have it figured out completely. To restore his core crystal, Malos stole Pyra's memories. For all intents and purposes, Pyra only knew Rex well enough to have fond memories, since she basically asked Addam to seal her away from the sheer guilt right after she was created. The core crystal resonance with Rex allowed him to give her his memories, since they're the same. Rex's memories are Pyra's. That's why he could talk to Pyra and Mythra's spirits, but just him, nobody else could because they lacked that connection. And the revival itself was Pyra and Mythra letting go of their fear, and unlocking the true power of the Trinity Processor, becoming Pneuma. It's still unclear if the Blade Pneuma is the same personality that the AI Pneuma had, I doubt it, but the connection Rex and Pyra had were the reason Pyra was able to be revived here. The third sword was needed not for helping revive Pyra, but for Rex to understand the true meaning of being the Driver of the Aegis, and to carry her burdens with her.
While I like the blend of Pyra and Mythra's voices, something I would've loved even more is if Pneuma's voice was layered...I get that it would make more work for the VA but I think it'd sound really cool!!

I think Rex sounds fine when he is just talking but when it comes to serious battle cutscenes and yelling or needing to show emotion he doesn't really nail it, idk if its cuz it would have been hard to keep his voice sounding correct or if they just didnt try to make it sound better cuz they thought this was fine

3:06 Horrible. HORRIBLE voice direction. The lad is SCREAMING and the actor is just kinda talking with passion. Literally ruined this scene that was supposed to be one of the game's most powerful moments.

edseiya Worst part is a lot of it is clearly direction. Barring that last bit you quoted, his delivery wasn't bad so much as at odds with the animation. Something that apparently no one informed him of. Which is a common problem in a lot of games but is especially common and glaring in English dubs of Japanese games given the pronounced differences in how each culture approaches acting.

Drowning? It means "breath" or "spirit" in Ancient Greek. Sorry, I have only studied Ancient Greek at school, not Modern Greek, so I wouldn't know much about the differences.
Pneuma does mean "breath/spirit" in Ancient Greek, and is a religious reference, specifically to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is typically represented as either a flame or a white dove, which in this game are translated into Pyra/Mythra. Rex is the messianic figure of the world who she accompanies,(and whose name means "king" in Latin, a reference to Christ the King) and they go to see the creator of the world, who she refers to as Father,(and is literally referred to as the God of Genesis in the Japanese version as opposed to Architect) thus representing the three persons of the Holy Trinity.
My God... that voice acting was horrible! And it only makes it worse that the character in the game is clearly yelling everything out as loud as he could while the english voice actor just calmly says his lines. Sure, some parts aren't exactly bad, but when it matters most, his delivery is horrendous, ruining the moment this scene was suppose to have for the players. Just what were they thinking with this? By now, there really isn't much reason to have a bad voice actor for the MAIN character! They should have hired a different guy for it once they saw how bad this one was. After all, if he refuses to do a good job, there are plenty of others who would happily take his place. I know I am being hard on the voice actor, but to me, it sounds like he didn't even care about his role in the game, like he just did it for the money. While, yeah, getting paid is important, but doing a good job for it is even more so. The better you do, the more people will want to hire you, so this hurts him as well. That, and it irks me to no end when something like this happens. Was there no quality control or something?
I actually like this VA for this scene, because... Well, it sounds more emotional, other then the "JOOOOOOOOOOOIN MEEEEEEEE" it sounded pretty good. Also... This isn't just because of this VA, but you should also being pointing fingers at the Voice Directors as well. Also speaking about them, I'll get back to Rex's VA in a second, but... Did you know that the ones who Voice Directed this game in English... Were new? So yeah, basically not only did they hired new VA's for this game, but they also hired 2 newbies for the voice direction. Also, returning to Rex's VA, he does shows passion for voiceing Rex, when speaking normally he is fine, then their is the Chapter 6 ending, and then the final boss against Malos during that Shulk cutscene. He has the ability to do great VA it is just the direction that didn't do their job in guiding him most of the time. There is more that plays into this, then just the VA's, so don't just blame them.
I completely disagree. The problem isn't the acting itself it's just that it doesn't fit the actions. I think the more passionate speech fits the situation and rex's character much better than Japanese screaming which they animated it to look like

The Tomorrow With You is very rapidly becoming one of my favourite pieces in the entire OST.

One of my biggest issues with this game is that it's so hard to hear the character's voices over the music in some cutscenes. There were some parts where I'd have had no idea what was being said if there weren't subtitles.
powderpuffman121 that's why you put the cutscene voices up in the settings. I didn't have that problem. The issue is that those settings don't apply to the theater, so when you rewatch scenes sometimes the music is too loud
The voice/music slider is pretty good, I had no problem once I got to the right setting

This cutscene and the awakening of Monado 2 in Xenoblade 1 will always be my favorite cutscenes for they both have the same feel to it.
both party members fighting for their lives against 2 great threats, feeling of hopelessness and then, sad emotional moment, badass one liner and then start the triumphant battle music because new a blade awakened and you the player are just now ready to rock their shit

Honestly, I think the scream here fits. It’s a desperate plea from Rex for Pyra and Mythra to not give up on themselves and the world. Screams like that aren’t meant to sound powerful and courageous, they’re meant to sound weak and scared, desperately clawing for what meager strength it can muster.
I think Rex's VA actually does a really good job for most of the game but god it is so frustrating that he can't seem to raise his voice past a certain decibel level. Every time he has to scream it's like he's recording his lines with people sleeping upstairs and he's trying not to wake them up.

This is the kind of scene where you can tell the voice actors are unbelievably talented, they were just given little to no direction for the scenes they were recording because the dubbing was insanely rushed
Okay I just want to say that I absolutely love this scene TO DEATH. And while some parts of the performance isn't great, the line itself "So believe me, I won't let the world burn a second time" is honestly done so well and is the reason why I love Al Weavers voice and why I wouldn't ever want him to be replaced if this game was to ever fix up any voice acting. He captures the spirit of Rex so well, and I love it for that.

Al Weaver has taken a lot of undeserved flak for his turn as Rex. Only iffy moments for me were some of his screams in the beginning, and the "JOIN ME" bit in this clip, but otherwise I thought he did a great job conveying his naivety and cheerful nature, and even the emotional moments aren't bad. It's only the "JOIN ME" part that I felt could have stood to be better.

@@may83195 Of course it explains it, Malos' models are likely sequential in the root asset folder, either someone entered the wrong link in the code for the cutscene by accident or the game itself created a faux connection to the incorrect model as part of a glitch (Which is known to happen randomly in games of this complexity).
If you change to a different tab then Rex's voice acting is actually good for the most part with the exception of that "JOIN ME". Really Like he has the right emotion but it's like they told his VA what to say but left out how what his tone of voice should be.

It’s important to remember that Rex is pretty much begging the girl(s) he loves to not go through with suicide. He’s extremely desperate at this point, appearing to be losing two battles on two different fronts. Anyone’s voice would break in a situation like that.
TBH, always thought Rex was fine, but Pyra/Mythra is so wooden it's painful.
I heard the director gave zero shits. No retakes, no conversation, no context.
For all those still confused as to why Pyra could even be revived, I think I have it figured out completely. To restore his core crystal, Malos stole Pyra's memories. For all intents and purposes, Pyra only knew Rex well enough to have fond memories, since she basically asked Addam to seal her away from the sheer guilt right after she was created. The core crystal resonance with Rex allowed him to give her his memories, since they're the same. Rex's memories are Pyra's. That's why he could talk to Pyra and Mythra's spirits, but just him, nobody else could because they lacked that connection. And the revival itself was Pyra and Mythra letting go of their fear, and unlocking the true power of the Trinity Processor, becoming Pneuma. It's still unclear if the Blade Pneuma is the same personality that the AI Pneuma had, I doubt it, but the connection Rex and Pyra had were the reason Pyra was able to be revived here. The third sword was needed not for helping revive Pyra, but for Rex to understand the true meaning of being the Driver of the Aegis, and to carry her burdens with her.

And people say the VA’s are trash. I prefer it. Mainly for it’s actual diversity. I swear every main character in XC1 has the same accent.

I think Rex sounds fine when he is just talking but when it comes to serious battle cutscenes and yelling or needing to show emotion he doesn't really nail it, idk if its cuz it would have been hard to keep his voice sounding correct or if they just didnt try to make it sound better cuz they thought this was fine

edseiya Worst part is a lot of it is clearly direction. Barring that last bit you quoted, his delivery wasn't bad so much as at odds with the animation. Something that apparently no one informed him of. Which is a common problem in a lot of games but is especially common and glaring in English dubs of Japanese games given the pronounced differences in how each culture approaches acting.
edseiya Its especially worse because none of the actors knew what the models expressions were. So in most cases an over the top scene will have a underperformed line or vise versa.

Drowning? It means "breath" or "spirit" in Ancient Greek. Sorry, I have only studied Ancient Greek at school, not Modern Greek, so I wouldn't know much about the differences.
Pneuma does mean "breath/spirit" in Ancient Greek, and is a religious reference, specifically to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is typically represented as either a flame or a white dove, which in this game are translated into Pyra/Mythra. Rex is the messianic figure of the world who she accompanies,(and whose name means "king" in Latin, a reference to Christ the King) and they go to see the creator of the world, who she refers to as Father,(and is literally referred to as the God of Genesis in the Japanese version as opposed to Architect) thus representing the three persons of the Holy Trinity.

My God... that voice acting was horrible! And it only makes it worse that the character in the game is clearly yelling everything out as loud as he could while the english voice actor just calmly says his lines. Sure, some parts aren't exactly bad, but when it matters most, his delivery is horrendous, ruining the moment this scene was suppose to have for the players.
Just what were they thinking with this? By now, there really isn't much reason to have a bad voice actor for the MAIN character! They should have hired a different guy for it once they saw how bad this one was. After all, if he refuses to do a good job, there are plenty of others who would happily take his place.
I know I am being hard on the voice actor, but to me, it sounds like he didn't even care about his role in the game, like he just did it for the money. While, yeah, getting paid is important, but doing a good job for it is even more so. The better you do, the more people will want to hire you, so this hurts him as well. That, and it irks me to no end when something like this happens. Was there no quality control or something?
I actually like this VA for this scene, because... Well, it sounds more emotional, other then the "JOOOOOOOOOOOIN MEEEEEEEE" it sounded pretty good. Also... This isn't just because of this VA, but you should also being pointing fingers at the Voice Directors as well. Also speaking about them, I'll get back to Rex's VA in a second, but... Did you know that the ones who Voice Directed this game in English... Were new? So yeah, basically not only did they hired new VA's for this game, but they also hired 2 newbies for the voice direction. Also, returning to Rex's VA, he does shows passion for voiceing Rex, when speaking normally he is fine, then their is the Chapter 6 ending, and then the final boss against Malos during that Shulk cutscene. He has the ability to do great VA it is just the direction that didn't do their job in guiding him most of the time. There is more that plays into this, then just the VA's, so don't just blame them.
