      Yep, especially retail. Worked for a videogame retailer called Gamers for 3 years, and the VP liked to routinely send out emails reminding people "everyone is replaceable." When their chain pulled out of Iowa, the VP paid to run an article in most widely distributed paper to complain and say "there are no good workers in Iowa." When I quit as an assistant manager, I left to make nearly double as an autoparts delivery driver. And about a year after that, like he'd done with other locations, walked into my old store, fired everyone on the spot, closed it up, and hired the most random people. That was nearly 20 years ago and I still have old customers recognize me from time to time wanting to talk about how the place went downhill.

    I'am one of the strikers here at Ikea Perryville. We wanted a peaceful resolution. We want to go back to work but we will fight for what we believe is right for us and we won’t back down. I been with this company nearly 13 years and I bust my ass for them. Myself and every senior co-worker has earned our seniority through years of hard work and we are going to fight to keep it.

      I am pro-increase salary. Really, I am. However, this is the first time I heard of this "seniority rights". For a new employee, this really feels unfair and ironically, sounds like favoritism. So, how can the employer attract new people if they are already treated unfairly? If it is about older people doing more physical jobs, then fight for less quota or less physical jobs for older people without being scared of getting fired.
      I hope you get what you are fighting for or at least come up with a solution that is agreeable to both parties.
      Keep it up!!!

      @@ksoosk you need to rewatch the video. You've clearly never had to deal with petty cliquish upper management that plays games to purposely push people out of the door especially senior employees which are closer to retirement and thus the retirement money the company doesn't want to pay out. My husband and I drove semi truck coast to coast for Werner Enterprises for over 23 years. We were hazmat endorsed hauling chemicals, poisons, flammables, explosives and radioactive materials and had a security clearance that required armed unmarked cars to travel in our vacinity. Our dispatcher told us the customer required us BY OUR Names to haul their loads. We both retired as two million mile accident free drivers EACH. Why did we retire? I'm so glad you asked!! A raise was announced. But later found out it was for EVERYONE under the million mile accident free drivers each. So, the 1, 2, 3, 4 and the one 5 million milers were not included in the raise. The heartbreak was devastating. We asked for a load into the closest to our home, rented a car on the way to the terminal, cleaned out our truck, handed in the keys without saying a word and quit.
    GO UNION!!!!

    As a Swede, I have a positive view of IKEA. But it saddens me to hear of these unfair working conditions for IKEA employees. Unfortunately, companies often will not improve workers' wages and working conditions on their own. This is why unions are vital in the workplace. As an example 68%!!!! of all workers in Sweden are union members. The result of that is that it is more difficult for companies to decline the demands made by the unions. So keep up the hard fight!

      I started my career with Caterpillar 60 years ago. I saw within a week as a 20 year old that unions would be the death of companies like Caterpillar. I left after 10 years. Not because they were a bad company but because they had no chance against feather bedding union people...and I was going to have to manage them.
      One in 8 was a shop steward and did nothing but rile up the other 7. The rule book was thicker than the phone book for my town of over 100,000 people. @laestrella9727 4 дні тому +7

      True. That has been my experience in most jobs. "I paid my dues so I can slack off now". Frustrating. Can see this from both sides. The longer people stay in one job = fewer skill sets due to stagnation and lack of exposure to newer technology and different ways of working. You need a healthy ratio of longer-serving vs newer staff.
      I'm not a fan of 'one job for life' societies. Mix it up. Assign people jobs and train people in various industries (within reason). Why do people need to stay put all their lives? It's not healthy or productive to stay still.

    • @rainkloud
      @rainkloud 2 дні тому +2

      Doing the bare minimum means that they are meeting expectations i.e. a fair trade of labor for wages. If you want outstanding performance you need to have pay that is commensurate with that. How about investing in things that boost morale and incentivize employees to work more efficiently?

    • @rainkloud
      @rainkloud 2 дні тому

      @@laestrella9727 If people want to "mix it up" then great! But not everyone does. Some people don't live to work, they work to live and for them they "mix it up" with their activities outside of work doing things like volunteering, supporting their friends and family and developing skills not directly related to work. They want to come in, be good teammates, perform their job satisfactorily and then live their lives. Sounds exceedingly reasonable to me.
      And union employees are not exempt from reviews so if there are employees slacking off then your issue is with ineffective managers who are failing to document, coach and, if need be, terminate those employees.
      Companies are in the business of selling things and that doesn't just mean their products. They're responsible for providing and selling their growth and development programs to their employees. You want people to work in different jobs? Don't just assign them, sell them on the benefits of it and make it worth their while so they make the move of their own volition.

    • @laestrella9727
      @laestrella9727 День тому

      @rainkloud Can't agree. Have you worked a variety of jobs? There is nuance to this. There are ways to be technically working but due to poor or low effort: you end up costing the company and putting more strain on coworkers.
      An example: one IT company I worked for. Most colleagues replied to in-house staff with a quick request for more information (PC name, browser.. other technical details). Fair enough. But often, there was enough information about the error to at least send one or two possible resolutions to try from the knowlege base.
      So instead of avoiding the need for another email or call, we'd have to pick up these replies and send those resolutions. This affects call levels, KPIs / SLAs and staff morale. I do think companies need to get more specific with their contracts for each job role as a lot of people take the p*ss. But I also agree that minimum wage needs to be replaced with 'liveable' wage.
      F*ck knows why developed countries think it's acceptable to allow companies to pay citizens a wage that 'just' keeps them off the bread line. Really?! That's just embarrassing for everyone involved.

That said, if you're not efficient in your management position and a more recent hire is, the job should absolutely go to them if you're not willing or able to take advantage of learning opportunities or advanced training.

Out of sight out of touch out of mind and throw the workers under the bus and ship the jobs to Asian, African, and South American countries for pennies. So how can the people be earning a decent wage pay the price for the product the owners price gouge for?? They cannot get the money from the country they have the factory at in a low wage no benefit place. The rich are only cutting their own throats in the end. But they don't see. I've heard so much good about IKEA as an employee here in Germany, that I wanted to apply there for a long time, but because of the distance decided against it. Here in Germany everyone can be in a union and if you even get just a little bit negative attitude from your company because of your union-membership, you can go to court and fine soooo much money out of them, they start to cry.

    Well, let me understand what's going on... Why do companies hire employees? To do what they are told to do, right? So now a bunch of employees want to tell the company which jobs they like to do and how much they want? This is hilarious. How would you feel if you opened a plumbing company, hired plumbers and they suddenly told you that they all wanted to be managers and that plumbing was too hard and they would rather stay in an office and flip sheets of paper... If you don't like your job and it's a bad job, just leave. It's so easy. Go and take the better one available.
    So why are they still holding onto their 'terrible' positions? Well, one guy said he makes $29 per hour. That's not bad even by California standards. Around 5 grand per month.

      @@aprilb92212 OK, but being a union is like trying to sabotage somebody else's business. There thing is that the employer does not dictate the salaries. The market does. You pay too little and employees will run away. You pay too much and you won't make the required profit. If these persons are still there, it means they are OK.
      But protests like this are in bad taste anyway: I am your employee and I will tell you how much I want to earn and what work I want to do.
