I struggle with a huge amount of anxiety when it comes to driving. I find it so overwhelming that one little mistake could be life threatening to anyone round me, or even myself. I’m currently trying to learn how to manage these irrational thoughts. However, it’s a work in progress and I’m determined to get back into lessons and know that one day I will be a confident and safe driver. I also find the amount of information you need to learn to drive, whether that’s technique, road safety or theory very overwhelming. But likewise, I’m taking it step by step. Good luck to everyone.
Hi James, sorry you are feeling like this. I also feel like this, especially when I started learning, and especially when going fast on dual carriageways. I used to get really anxious sometimes days before a lesson. A few things that helped me were writing out rules on driving eg how to do a left turn or what to do at a roundabout. That helped me reassure myself that I knew what I was doing. Also the driving anxiety hypnosis video by free hypnosis sessions on UA-cam was calming to listen to before lessons. The more you learn and practice the more confident you'll become and then you will know that eg if you have to stop suddenly you will be able to do it safely, and especially when you are learning you have the instructors dual control pedals so you will not be a danger to anyone. Watching videos like these with tips on how to drive safely is also very helpful. If you can, talk to your instructor about your anxiety over it so that they can help to teach you while accomodating for the anxiety. Wishing you all the best, you can do it!
@bethanyfield6035 hi I recommend driving in quiet little towns and back roads. They were no problem. I lived where I didn't need car but now do so back after long break. Yes you will encounter animals and kids but easy to handle and then gradually you may or may not get used to bigger roads. Best wishes.
This is the perfect video especially as everyone is in the same boat. I passed my test last January so a year now but with lockdowns it's been difficult to keep driving on a daily basis. As it's not essential to just go for a drive. Currently not driven for a month and needed to see this video for when my son goes back to school. Stay safe everyone.
I stopped driving several years ago due to anxiety. A mixture of family stress and work stress meant I was having panic attacks when driving. For the past 12 years I have not needed a car. Now I am looking for work and am finding that I am severely restricted by not having a car. So I need to confront my fears and get back to driving, but it is easier said than done.
Oh my goodness. That’s exactly what I said ❤️😂😮💨 It is “easier said than done.” I’m considering taking lessons again, I feel it’s embarrassing at this point too cause, I passed my road test with the instructor, took many full-on lessons thankfully for a long time & successfully ended up passing. I would pretend to be nervous, so the instructor wouldn’t yell at me. ❤😂 *That’s why I’m embarrassed nowadays. He took it as I was anxious for Everything in life. I was just not wanting to be yelled at when learning to drive. 😂 I passed with him though & am appreciative. I kind of want to consider another school this go-around for refresher lessons, with my driver’s license now. Cause facts, I even got hit on and asked on a date with my last instructor (guy was something else). 😂 Way years older my senior. Just cause I gave him eye contact when being spoken to. 😂😂 Ah.’ Hahaha. Just some lightheartedness. I hope you’re doing well and hopefully on the roads these days?! Or either way, all the best to you as well. I’m myself battling myself with this very issue. Got hesitance to drive - more consistently or on my own yet (cause I feel I just don’t have a reason to for some reason or “don’t have my own” vehicle yet but plan on it) - after practically being a new driver (very normal & common for the occasional driver and/or ones who don’t have their own cars yet: cause even sharing a car feels unsatisfying to some: I know it does to me & I carry even its key). 🫠 Hoping some lessons help change my caprices lol. Best wishes to us all on here.
Very useful , having not driven for a few years but now need a car for work. Took your tip about shorter journeys at first; confidence is coming back more for longer runs now as well.Thanks.
Amazing tips. I recently got insurance on my mum car and it’s been 2.5 years since I pass my test and since I last drive. So pretty nervous but will use these tips, I sure it’s muscle memory and taking it slow is the way too go.
Why do I need to be such a nervous wreck lol... Anxiety is a significant pointless obstacle to what would otherwise be a fairly straightforward thing...
Thank you for the tutorial. I'm living in the US and I now in the program driving again after 3 years due to the Covid. My struggles is real but with practice I will make it.

I needed help , I suddenly lost my confidence in myself to drive. I am a very good driver, I just suddenly fine myself nervous behind the wheel.. I drive for a short distance and then I became nervous.. Help me please..
I'm watching this video because after I passed my driving test in 2013 in another European country I drove 5 times by myself before moving to the UK. I have not driven ever since then but I'm hoping to buy a car soon and I'm so nervous. I'm also contemplating to buy an automatic car even though I learnt how to drive on manual vehicle. Any suggestions for me @advanced driving school?
Automatic cars are easier to drive - why not try one out? This video explains the differences: Manual or automatic?: ua-cam.com/video/R6tSHlmccyk/v-deo.html 👍🏼
Hi, my theory is due to expire on the 13th of March this year does anybody know if there will be a extension. My lessons start again on the 26th if lockdown is eased I'm getting anxious that I won't have enough practice an will have to rush into a practical before I'm ready.
There won't be an extension I'm afraid. The reason for the two year limit is to ensure that your knowledge is upto date - and if so it shouldn't be a problem to pass another Theory test if necessary. Sorry!
@@adamgg2913 as to what iv understood about other videos on here about this, is that if your theory test runs out before you can book a test, you will be refunded, but still have to rebook and retake the test. Yes, because your theory has to be up-to-date for the reason why they won't extend it. Just keep looking over the theory questions and practice the video section.
@@adamgg2913 oh, and I meant to add, if you don't feel ready for your pratical test it would be best not sitting it (as it may lead to a fail) however, if your confident and its just because of some nerves take your time, the examiners are not looking for perfect driving but safe driving. Happy learning! :)

Got a car on Friday and drove for the first time in nearly 15 years! It was way better than expected!
Wow i think i would forget everything if i waited that long lol, Did you take any refresher lessons in the meantime?
yes muscle memory is weird. i’ll say the first 15 or so minutes of the drive is a little stressful but then it’s all good
