- The UK has a big problem with knife crime.
It’s been steadily getting worse - tens of thousands are affected and hundreds have been killed in the last year.
So is arming more police with guns one possible solution?

No. The average street officer doesn't have the emotional intelligence or accountability to be trusted with a firearm. A lot of innocent people would die.

If you ban the knife, they will use something else. Banning articles doesn't stop crime, neither does covering up which groups in which areas are committing most crime.
Unless you ignore do-gooders, you can not deal with the people involved.
I am an ex-police officer in Calif, U.S. I encountered suspects (majority ex-convict with extensive records and drug smuggling) with firearms every day and they wouldn't hesitate to use them.
I think the management of UK police needed to have a total different mind set. One police officer injury or dead by knife or other weapon was too many.Taser often wouldn't work on heavy jackets. I would not expect police officer carried equipment that was useless to control a suspect or protect themselves.
It was laughable and ignorant for the chief to say new officers didn't sign up to carry guns, but they may be injury or die by knives. Police work is dangerous job after all.
They need new extensive firearm training like we do in the U.S. We don't expect our new diversity under sized female and minority officers to arrest any one with hand to hand combat only.
I sure wouldn't want to patrol in streets of UK without gun. I think the UK police and public under estimated the kind of criminals they had. I don't understand how UK residents could sleep at night without real police protection.
In the uk, being a firearms officer gives you no benefits, you do twice the amount of work for the same amount of pay as a regular officer, no wonder we are running low on firearms certified officers

they still will get there late its time ALL law following citizens should carry guns or own them like Switzerland we all should protect each other then crime would be at Zero. First time i went to Texas a guy in the truck at the the lights held his stare at me ....I thought twice this guy maybe armed...we both drove off

My condolences to all the families and loved ones of those victims.. But the Police personnel need extensive and thorough training to deal with the public professionally and effectively. What we have now not like in the past, i.e. before 2009. We need better recruitment of officers and quality training.
