The banning of zombie knives in 2016, for example, only restricted their online sale, while the knives are still readily available. The recent announcement of tougher sentences for illegal knife importation is a step in the right direction, but it is clear that more needs to be done.
Another area of concern is the lack of police action and its impact on public safety. Despite promises of stricter penalties for carrying knives and increased stop-and-search measures, many perpetrators still avoid imprisonment. This creates a dangerous environment where young people are more afraid of each other with knives than they are of the authorities. It is crucial that both sentencing and community involvement are prioritised to address this issue effectively.

It was happening in Vauxhall back in the 90s when I was at collage there. From the colour we are not aloud to mention. It's just in their nature. I saw it on a weekly basis, knives, baseball bats and it happened in the day time while the security guards just let it happen in and outside of the college. I always knew from back then it would get worse.

They occasionally are put in jail but for very short sentences. As if they care about a 6 month sentence, all it does is take them off the street for a little bit, usually allow them to meet up with other gang members or get to rival gang members. They don’t care about the repercussions of knife crime, sure they’ll wail when their boy gets stabbed up and dies but they won’t stop carrying and utilising weapons. Hell even if they have a fight they’ll kick and jump on the victims head and vitals. I studied in Liverpool and had placements in some very questionable areas croxteth, dingle in the 2006 period but I never felt terrified on a bus or waiting at a stop. I think I would nowadays.
I think you have hit on one of the key issues. Those of a mind to take out a weapon and use it to kill do not see short jail sentences as a deterrent. If anything they return from jail as some sort of hero in amongst their peer group. It is my belief that "whole life tariffs" should be given to those who go out with the intention of using a knife (or any other item) with the intent to use it to threaten and ultimately kill.

Knives do not kill people, people kill people. Banning knives is simply not the answer, people of a mind to kill will just find another way to kill. By focussing purely on the knives we somehow dehumanise the crime. The crime is a person choosing to kill a person with a weapon, whether it be a knife or a machete or anything else. There needs to be far more robust policing and , when someone is convicted of killing with a knife they need jailing for "whole of life" not fifteen years and out in eight with good behaviour.

‘24 month detention and training order’. It’s laughable isn’t it? The criminal thug threatened to cut off his arm then his head, was late for his trial then late again to court the next time and according to the reports had a rap sheet a mile long. This country is a complete and utter disgrace.
No doubt the 17 year old defendants legal counsel will put forward that he carried the bladed article as 'personal defence' even though with a foot long blade you would have difficulty putting it in a coat pocket. I hope that he gets a very long sentence.

Last week, an acquaintance abroad called back his kids back home from London University due to safety fears in the city. Not a good image of London abroad.
I lived in Glasgow during the years that Glasgow was the knife crime capital of Europe. You'd see lots of men walking about with scars on their faces from being slashed. A lot of teens were killed. Yet it didn't seem to have the same hysteria around it as the situation in London.
It SEEMS that the problem is being amplified by the media to a degree that simply didn't happen a decade or so ago when the problem was in London. There seems to be more of a political agenda over the London stabbings. Is it because government want an excuse to bring in more draconian laws? Or is it an anti-imigration thing?
I totally agree with you. no one has ever mentioned this at all. It is an anti-immigration thing. Most of the perpetrators and victims were born here and likely to be 2nd or 3rd Generation. The media are simply amplifying it because London has a high immigrant population, and black people disproportionally are involved in knife crime. It gives the far right and xenophobes and racists a reason when they look at the statistics to say the most racist things when they cannot look at the reasons. People usually get stabbed to death in certain areas like Croydon (where the 15-year-old was stabbed). These dummies will not get that Black people tend to live in rougher areas where knife crime is common, while working class white people moved out of the city. People were getting stabbed to death in London for a long time, but the media have been amplifying it since the last decade. London gets the hysteria only because of the immigration population. People have this dumb mindset that immigrants are bad and ruin everything and make everything worse and the media capitalises on this by reporting on bad things that ethnic minorities are more likely to do. The government will get the media to report on this and put more attention so they can justify putting more draconian laws on law abiding citizens.
The hysteria is that the far right are trying to correlate knife crime with immigration. More immigration means more knife crime which is a lie. Glasgow has a high indigenous population so the far right will never talk about that. All they want to do is bash people who are not white. If you spend enough time here, you would know far right commentators and amateur news reporters who will report on ethnic minorities just for the NPCs to comment "cultural enrichment" and "diversity". The knive crime rate in London is right on par with those in the homecountries of those living in London today. If you place all of Africa and Pakistan, morocco, algeria, etc. In a European city then this city will get an african knife crime rate. Same is going on all over Europe and is not rocket science. Stop and search is neither lawful nor an answer to this issue. My right to free unhindered movement should not be removed. I have a right to walk down the street without being unlawfully detained at random, and having my pockets turned out simply because some officer doesn't like the cut of my jib! Police need a lawful reason to detain and search somebody, and "looking suspicious" doesn't fucking cut it since that isn't a crime.
Stop and search should be standard procedure, its not rocket science, and put thousands of bobbies back on the streets. Army too if need be.

I do not take away the sorry and pain felt by those who have suffered from knife crime in recent years, but I have lived/loved/fought/worked in the East End for 65yrs. To tell me knife crime is worse now than when I was younger is a bloody joke and so far from reality it's a insult. From Whitecross street to Roman rd to Archway the gang fights using knives was a weekly event, if not more. Arse stabbing someone was a right of passage years ago, and I don't mean the gay act.
