I hired a van from them in Leicester, the trainee rep who served me was very helpful and outlined everything quite clearly, however, apparently she'd misinformed me about a few fees when I came to return the van (no damage fees incurred), I paid but lodged a complaint with the manager in a phone call when I got home, during which he threw the trainee under the bus. I took my complaint further and had the extra charges refunded, but I've always felt sorry for the trainee who seemed to understand what she was selling very well and seemingly wasn't in on the making a bit of extra commission.

I hired cars routinely for my work and, although my own company's arrangements with the various (big name) hire car companies sheltered me from the insurance scams, the "unlisted damage" one was worked by them on many occasions. The usual ploy was not to list the damage on the docket and demand a signature before even seeing the car (more and more commonly parked a long way from the desk inside the airport). It really is a buyer beware situation and, as tedious as it is, don't assume that minor, unrecorded damage that you spot will be considered so minor upon return and ALWAYS mention it before driving away. It's signature driven so: 1. When signing add "signed with vehicle unseen" to get the keys. 2. Go back to the desk with ANY unlisted damage. 3. Don't be fobbed off with "Oh, we don't count that as damage" waffle - get a signature. 4. Photos, photos, photos. These aren't enough on their own but are currency in any legal battle. 5. Don't flare up. The people you're dealing with are generally low wage operatives. Play the long game. 6. Never underestimate how shameless hire car companies are in their scamming.
We had someone ask us to sign before she came out with us and took photos… we were like “uhhh no?” The system on her iPad wouldn’t let her move onto photos until we had signed. Ridiculous. Our next hire we have booked it’s either “buy the extra insurance or you’ll need a $5,000 deposit.” A bit excessive.
The rental agents are NOT low wage operatives. They make bank. Seriously, I've worked for a rental company and the commissions are insane. The mangers ALSO make bank and they are the ones that deal with damages and complaints.

Green Motion at LGW did this to me too. Brought a car back to LGW after a week, they found a tiny little dot of a dent in the driver's side window chrome that was probably there when I got it. Aggressive staff member "measures" it, cha-ching, bill for £250. Luckily I had excess protection from iCarhireinsurance but in order to pay out they wanted official proof of repair from Green Motion. Green Motion refused to provide it. This went back and forth until GM finally grudgingly came up with a written quotation. I had always suspected that the amount asked was total horse cr*p and that the repair would normally not be carried out. This video has proved what I suspected. Thanks Mr Lycett for confiring that GM are a bunch of shysters. (Easirent too, but that's a different story.)
I used to work for Avis, and I know from talking to other car rentals in the same airport that often very small damage would be billed but if it was like a small ding etc it wouldn’t be repaired. A lot of car hire actually lease cars from main dealers for the busy season and get billed at the end for any damage
Should of told them you will fix it. Then come back with the real care like you got it fixed. Tell them you pulled it back out and into shape with really strange magnets.
I've just checked the three most popular Excess polices here in the UK and none of them mention Greenmotion. As per the reply above, which policy provider specifically excludes GreenMotion?
Only used them once, at Manchester airport. Got ripped off with them charging the deposit in full on the day of rental (didn't even wait to see if there was any damage) and then not refunding. Police got involved and the manager was sent away for a long holiday! Would never, ever, use them again.
@@SuperCMeekins usually before you see the car. You do all the paperwork, pay, they block the deposit on your credit card and then you will be assigned with the car and then you can check for dents and scratches. But those won't affect your deposit
@@MagaIstvan No, sorry, but that isn't right. What the hire company should do is obtain authorisation for the amount of the deposit and, if the car is returned in good condition, they cancel the authorisation (or charge a proportionate amount if there is damage). Green Motion were actually putting the payment through at the time the car was collected, so the money was actually taken from my account before I even left the airport, and I then had a whole series of arguments to get the money back, which is why the police were involved.
It's good to see these videos up on UA-cam for people to view at their leisure. Perhaps it might help to start bringing companies like this to an end. I'm so sick of seeing how we get ripped off in the UK and mostly just sigh and pay up and let it continue. Well done Channel 4, and, of course, Joe Lycett.
I have hired cars many times from this type of companies. This isn't one time off company, it is literally the business model of these cheap rental type of companies.
I've used green motion for van rental, I wouldn't use or recommend them. I've also used Enterprise for van and car hire, no problems with them at all, would definitely recommend. I now prefer to use a local rental company that is slightly more expensive but have fantastic customer service (senior self drive Market Harborough)
I live near an airport, plenty of choices for car hire when I need one, and I always choose Enterprise when costs allow. They aren't the cheapest, but I've also never had any problems with them and they always go above and beyond to make sure I'm happy with my car hire
@Mark n The fact you stated that "you've not known of that to happen to anyone" when it clearly happens to many people, including the person you replied to, who gave you a simple way to read about lots of other people with similar stories, and the fact you think every branch & employee of Enterprise would somehow be fundamentally immune to such common practices as witnessed in this video
This is what I got told when I started a job representing charities in shopping centres (the company was contracted by a charity to represent them). I was pressured into getting my first donations sign-up from a mentally ill man who was on a pension, the last person we should be targeting. The people I worked with also used every tactic under the sun to get sales. My 20-something female co-worker told me she targets younger guys and pretends she's interested in them, then gives them the spiel. I quit after a week and the company went under within a year.
What you should do is inform the relevent staff member and get them to amend the damage report before you accept the car. Or you could just do what you do and wind youself up unnecessarily during the hire period at the prospect of a confrontation on return of the vehicle.
@@12hotchocolate3 Compensation? Really?? Does that not make you as bad as them? I'd be interested to hear the details of this compensation you speak of.
@@gerrabath filing a complaint over something you are right about hardly makes you as bad as them. The compensation comes for the time and "grief" you get/have to deal with.
Ok so no details are forthcoming. The only way you could possibly recieve compensation would be if a judge in a small claims court found in your favour. This is extremely unlikely because photographic evidence, time stamped or otherwise*, is considered to be circumstantial and thus inadmissable. The judge would probably ask why the damage wasn't reported to the hire company on first inspection according to protocol. All this before finding in the hire companies favour with possibly the thought in mind that some sort of minor scam was being attempted. *Because it's not beyond the realms of possibility for a time stamp to be altered to suit a purpose.
Thank you, I was going to rent a car from them due to their cheap price but I remembered this episode and came back to check if it was the same company and it was so I have chosen another company instead ;)
An important note: when a person is so jetlagged, tired and confused after a long flight that they can't even think straight, maybe they shouldn't be driving a fucking car in that state
Bit of a difference. You probably have been driving years and you have built in muscle memory when it comes to driving. But it's easy if you're doing something for the first time to be confused if someone is trying to confuse you.
Incredible Joe. I had exactly the same experience at the Green Motion Rentals Heathrow branch having just come off a long haul flight from New Zealand. I fought them to get my "extra charges" back - to no avail. I then took my case to the BRVA and got absolutely nowehere. Thieving crooks!!!!
Good on you Joe. I'm an Australian and rented in America on honeymoon. Returned car during allowed hours before closing but only one person on desk and she said their check in people are gone for the day. They'll check it tomorrow. I said no I'm not leaving it without it being checked in on my presence. She said she can't leave her desk to check it. I said not my problem, sign it off without inspecting it then. I refused to leave without her signing it off, willing to have the police called on me after closing hours. After 10-15 minutes of her realising I was not going to give in, she agreed to lock up and come out with me to check it over. Another time hiring a van there was so much minor damage and even ants, instead of photos I took a video of every single part, circling inside and out before driving off so even if I missed seeing something to photograph, it would be in a video frame.
A. You're about to go to Australia, how much effort do you think they'll put into tracking down wear and tear charges after you protest the charge on your credit card? And if you have insurance (every credit card includes it) those charges are covered anyway B) At what point would have just rented a van that wasn't in crap condition?
Don't know what would scare them more, the thought that they must have used witchcraft or something, or the realisation that they're probably about to be exposed for something...
Worked in a major car rental firm at a UK airport. Honestly this section could have been about any of them, but Green Motion were known as crooks even among other car rental companies. The thing to remember is the company sets the staff against the customer. If you're not getting another ~£13 a day off each customer, you're losing your wages. Some customers are coming for 3 months at a time, so that will be either a massive hit to the customer or to the staff member. There is no 'win-win' most of the time. Basically, this kind of sales works on a lot of bluster and American psychology e.g. nodding when you sell - sorry 'recommend' - an upgrade/insurance and using friendly banter to work out where they're going/what doing etc. so you can use that info to make a compelling sales pitch. There's often a consultant from an American company standing behind you marking you on your 'compliance'. Slick bullshit artistry, basically. Returns staff *are* paid commission on what damages they find, and most of it's not repaired unless it impacts safety or driveability, because there are never enough cars and they have to be kept moving. With customers who have external insurance, you have to play dumb, which can involve them having to call their own insurance company at 1 in the morning to check what's meant by 'collision and loss' because the terms don't match the UK ones. This has resulted in people paying an extra £1400 even though they probably already had it. Basically, if you're renting a car, make sure you know exactly what you're paying for, and go in armed like you were about to defend yourself in court. Oh, with the signing for damage thing, that's mainly logistical. You CAN go check the car first, but you've got a day to report anything and there's someone outside who can confirm anything you find. If everyone had to go all the way to the park, check stuff then come back in, it'd be impractical, especially if they had mobility problems.
If you've ever been with me, and before I sign anything. I've been known to read all terms and conditions. Will not move from the line until done. If they interrupt me, I tell them, oh I forgot where I'm up to and will start again. I also write a lot of honest reviews. I did one on my current rental agent within 2 months of signing the initial lease, as things weren't getting repaired. They went into damage control, threatened to go to court. In the end the Property Manager was given 2 choices either quit or be fired, as she was obviously not passing on the relevant information about repairs. Since then we've signed a six month extension and another 12 month one. The review is still up. I can't be bought for comment under a billion dollars Australian, and then there's no guarantee
@@drsiigabb9935 You absolutely should read the T&Cs, but maybe not while you're at the desk. With all the mandatory sales bluster we had to do, each rental would take an absolute minimum of 10 mins and often 15-20, and when there's 2 staff on and 5-10 people in the line behind you (I've actually seen 36 people in line with 2 agents on, people were waiting for more than 2.5 hours), it's better if you ask the agent if it's OK for you to step out of the queue and jump back in when you're ready to sign. IF they say no, then fuck 'em, but I had no problem with someone stepping out to read the documents, and I was always happy to put them back in once I was finished with the next person, but I did need to keep the queue moving or people would be waiting for stupid long times and that'd ruin their day and make my job way harder. I'd also say honest reviews are vital but keep a sense of perspective! I had people mark me down for the buses from the airport being slow, for it raining during their holiday or if the vending machine was broken! Your review has a direct impact on the agent's wages, so if they've treated you fairly, rate them highly. Anything below 8/10 takes money away from them. If they've used deceptive tactics and language, reflect that in your review but make sure to mention it in words. It won't change unless people keep calling the companies out on their bullshit. Try to remember which ratings are for who too: I've had a really positive interaction with a customer, given them a free upgrade, cracked some jokes, then had a 1/10 because one of the returns guys was rude to them, even though there was a separate section on the form for returns. Also remember that the guy behind the desk might be playing his own game but he might still be a decent person. Several of my colleagues were genuinely lovely people, even if I wouldn't want to buy anything from them. I've seen one girl reduced to tears because someone went off at her for just doing her job. It's an extremely stressful job, so while you absolutely be on the alert for bullshittery, don't be a dick about it. Not least because if someone's being a dick, they are WAY more likely to get the pink FIAT 500 with 20 scratches on it than the Mercedes A180. And yes, I genuinely have given someone a free upgrade into a jaguar because I liked them, or an Audi A5 to one guy (even though he'd booked a Corsa) because his little daughter made me crack up laughing. If there are too few cars left and some of them are luxury cars, SOMEONE's going to get a free upgrade, and tbh we'd much rather it was the friendly guy with the funny daughter than some stressed out dickhead who comes in complaining or treats us like criminals.
It's like hypnotherapists for quit smoking.. They say that if they don't have a repeat customer, they can only assume it worked.. essentially if the person chooses to not return to said hypnotherapist because they felt it didn't work, then there is no refund either.

I love how the one woman was telling her son how she's getting ripped off and that she should not have rented there. Nothing is stopping you from walking out. Why would you continue to go through with the rental process when you know full well you're getting fleeced.
Which just goes to show, if you allow yourself more time and have a backup plan ahead of schedule, you can save yourself a lot of problems. e.g. in this case, if they already had details for another car hire company it wouldn't have been such a big deal to back out. And it would've also helped them if they turned up and the business was closed for some reason, or they were turned away, etc, etc. It always pays to have a plan B, just in case.

So I guess everyone affiliated with them are a bit schemish...
I used to work as a car delivery driver. I learned this; When a rental car or any lease car is damaged the charge for the repair is retained by the rental/leasing company. When the car has come to the end of it's rental/lease life and put into auction the estimated sales price is lowered to take into account the cost of the damage. More often than not the car sells for much more than the estimated price. This means that the rental/leasing company makes even more profit (a double whammy, so to speak)!
15 years ago you'd have been carjacked and shot because your plates were unique to rentals, flagging you as a target for criminals. So stop complaining.
I do wonder why the manager thinks standing there saying "This contract is now void" actually achieves something. Like it has any legal force at all. Or like it wasn't in place at the time the damage occurred. That said. Okay, Pal. I agree, the rental contract is now void..... bye.....
Yup. Good idea. Just void the contract on the spot. Including the part where you are liable for any damage. No problem, let's void the contract here and now! Oh, that also means you owe me for the rental fees I payed up front.....

Green motion is open to interpretation. What you have failed to realize, is the company meaning, which is moving the green, from your account to theirs.🤣
If there’s no commission incentive on damage fees and the staff are just dividing it amongst themselves than that would mean this is something they’ve decided to go and do themselves to get more money. The lot of them should be investigated and prosecuted for theft. And what’s the bet car’s rim is still chipped
'Carbon (Co2) Offsetting'? They probably say a percentage of all revenue is used to plant trees somewhere in the world, to offset the effects of polluting vehicles. It's a modern day con that companies and even governments are using to generate revenue and raise backdoor taxes which are probably not ringfenced. There are companies in existence that buy and sell carbon capture solutions. These companies, by their very existence, generate even more Co2 ironically. Not forgetting that there is also an income tax loophole that is used to help all these companies pay less tax and make yet more money. It's all about MONEY! nothing to do with being GREEN or environmentally friendly.

I find it hard to beleive that these crooks are allowed to operate in the way that they do. They should be made accountable and have to pay back all that they have stolen.
It's signature driven so:
I used to work for Europcar as a collection/delivery driver. Everything you have stated above is absolutely spot on and 100% accurate.
The bubble wrap is hysterical
The rental agents are NOT low wage operatives. They make bank. Seriously, I've worked for a rental company and the commissions are insane. The mangers ALSO make bank and they are the ones that deal with damages and complaints.

Green Motion at LGW did this to me too. Brought a car back to LGW after a week, they found a tiny little dot of a dent in the driver's side window chrome that was probably there when I got it.

And if you have insurance (every credit card includes it) those charges are covered anyway

Because they need the car then and don’t have time to back out now.

I used to work as a car delivery driver. I learned this;
When a rental car or any lease car is damaged the charge for the repair is retained by the rental/leasing company.
When the car has come to the end of it's rental/lease life and put into auction the estimated sales price is lowered to take into account the cost of the damage.
More often than not the car sells for much more than the estimated price. This means that the rental/leasing company makes even more profit (a double whammy, so to speak)!

This is really discousting company. I was scammed by them as thousands of other people. Well done Joe!
"I think the radio still works."
I think the radio still works .... brilliant.
Why are they called green cars then rent out a diesel Mercedes ffs?
Modern day rule of thumb, if it says green in the title or name you are probably being scammed.
Is this mild vigilantism? If so, I like it! The Green ArrJoe!
Such good ideas in this show, nice one Joe
I worked in the car hire business over 30 years ago and these scams were going on then. It sickened me.
I think the radio still works ha ha, comedy gold.
It's really no different in the USA with Enterprise, Hertz, et al. When I turned in a rental at the airport I rented it (Harrisburg, PA, USA), the dweeb behind the counter tried to nail me for scratches. Apparently, the twerp forgot that I had taken pictures of the vehicle on the walk-about before I even took the keys from him. Even the ROOF. I had taken, not only THEIR insurance (which I knew he'd never put in a claim on, but I also have a rental rider on my auto policy. I showed him the photos, called my agent, sent him the before photos CLEARLY showing the dings and scratches and never heard another word about it.
@Mark n--Well, it appears the peanut gallery is heard from--and I am NOT your mate. Don't be familiar with me. NO, YA THINK? What I am trying to impart to you and others is that you can do a walk-around and point out issues and the dweeb with the clipboard can--and will--omit to document them. Now do run along. I'm sure there's someone else you can attempt to denigrate. I'm not having it. MUTING you. Babble to yourself for awhile.
This is how all retail works though, I almost got fired because I wouldn’t force our company’s stupid reward card down our customers throats
Kevin C I’m currently at Matalan and if I don’t force our matalan card on every customer I get threatened to be taken off of tills etc, maybe just matalan though
@@jacobfuller4067 Encouraging customers to sign up for a reward card is very different to intentionally scamming and lying to customers for personal gain..
Brooklyn Sfx we’re encouraged to lie saying we require a matalan card to properly load the transaction and force it upon them, only difference is we don’t scam them from money
@@jacobfuller4067 I worked at Matalan years ago, was training to be a store manager. Lasted just over a year, got the old head manager fired because he was really abusive and tactless, then I dislocated my knee and fucked the place off, blessing in disguise that happened really. Was a really sinister place.
Jacob Fuller I went to Matalan once and was told this. Refused to pay and left lol
Advise everyone to avoid Goldcar as well. Nice one Joe & team! 😊
Eco friendly night out ? .. Pissup in a windmill ? haha love this show .
"the contract is void"
Oh sweet, that means my obligations under the contract are void!
Have a great day!
*Smile and walks away*
Getting full use out of that blur function!
""Hertz"" car rental does the same exact thing here in the U.S. my wife worked for them she saw it daily
Enterprise rent a car as well.
Had it happened to me in Frankfurt, they have the gall to charge me €2500 for existing damages when their staff told me it's nothing to worry about at pickup. Thank fuck they're bankrupt.
Wow this is criminal, I think.
jesus jones that's just the way we phrase it where I'm from, urban dictionary is close to how we use it. If a business charges too much or the quality doesn't match the price, we'd say it's criminal, like it's immoral from a business perspective.
jesus jones that's what I'm explaining, it's a phrase. Like "daylight robbery".
jesus jones , you’re wrong. A guilty verdict results in a conviction, but the crime took place regardless of any prosecution.
Also, it’s not victimless.
“You are fully covered… but what I’m seeing now you are not fully covered”
This has a “That’s Life” feel about it.
I hope they all lost their jobs for that, you should do a follow up show next year to see if it’s changed
11:40 Is she Jimmy Carr's sister? Sounds just like what he'd say lol
We were also ripped off by Green Motion Heathrow, Never use them again. Crooks, disrespectful and rude staff
I never use or buy anything with the word "Green" in it. "Green" is code for RIPOFF by lowlifes.
The employee saying he was annoyed I’m like you where annoyed they where in a crash
At GTW I had reserved a small car for a short journey, from Hertz, found multiple defects so back into the office, got an apology, a delay, but a Mondeo, so far so good. A careful inspection showed that the rear light cluster was smashed and had been taped up, very expensive. A scan of the car park showed two guys with clipboards, "Do you work here?", turned out they were site auditors, left shortly later in a SAAB 9-5!
'I'm quite annoyed'.
Damn, they didn't even asked how he is. I thought British people were so polite.
We’re not
Weldone Joe,
Still doing a great job
watching our backs.
Love the coat, suits you.
Thank you.
👍🏻🌈🍀🌞🦋🌻😂💕
In that coat, Joe radiates some serious BDE!
"I think its a right off!"
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Reflects my experience with these guys 100%.
Love Joe Lycett and this show, he's doing a great job✌
You are tired, you have just arrived from the airport... Uber.
Hustle = criminal activity then?
When he holds up the teatowel, the art behind him blinked.Tripped me out lol
I used to work for a car hire company in Bulgaria, in a famous coastal resort. We were a small company, working hard to stay in the business. There were some people from other companies who (when you sign the contract, they know which your hotel is) had arrangements with the hotel's parking security and went during the night to remove the hubcaps and after that, they were charging 15 Euros per piece.
