    Infact, why not make every character in the movie a CG Han Solo!

    What's so great about the movie is that it doesn't focus n the whole Good Jedi vs Evil Sith storyline, but the costs and horrors of the war.

      Alexander Evensen it is a story about how they got the plans of the Death Star. Leia was the one who ensured the plans to be transmitted to the rebellion, but the rogue on squadron gave the plans to the rebellion and provided hope for them. It also comes down to normal people giving hope and not relying on people with magic powers to save the day

      One of the things I adored about the story was that the lines between good and evil were blurred. Instead of the rebellion just being good, they bring a focus to how they have done bad things, and how war is not a bedtime story, but actually really horrific.

      Probably in "original" version of the movie Rogue One (or just Jyn and Cassian) survived at the end. also I think it would be awesome if Orson Krennic helped Jyn by sending plans and thus sacrificing his own life (because he was badly treated by the empire and he was friend with Galen Erso). :)

    • @nieznajomy4398

    • @LupineShadowOmega

      +Nieznajomy43 Actually the better ending was probably the one they hinted at. Everyone gets captured, tortured, and then broken. They become the Knights of Ren at Vader's command and then when Vader dies they need a new master thus Kylo Ren in the future.

      Nieznajomy43 Film Theory or not, Saw's voice over about what you'll become while showing Jyn in the empire garb is them hinting at a potential role reversal. lol

      I think of it like going to a concert, where there's that one song you really hope the artist plays. And they don't. But the show is so fricken amazing that it's not until two days later that you stop and go, "Wait, they never played that one song... Screw it, that show rocked!"

      Jim Kirk yeah i don't get it, it should have been: flagship beams plans to leaia who is at a DISTANCE, because Darth Vader is definitely not stupid enough to believe the ship that just left the one he boarded a moment ago was on a diplomatic mission to alderann. besides, what was leaia doing on that ship anyway?! • @barleysixseventwo6665
      @barleysixseventwo6665 8 років тому +22

      It's called plausible deniability. She's a diplomat, so of course she bullshits Darth Vader to his face. She was banking on the fact that A) The Senate still existed B) She was being recorded by a dozen guys in full armor who probably had space-gopros built into the helmets or something and C) That the empire wasn't willing to admit that they had been engaged on equal terms by rebels and lost a great deal of men and ships in the process.
      Were that all the case Leia could have leveraged the political uproar of a military attacking it's own diplomatic vessels (for no apparent reason as the empire doesn't want to look weak) to escape punishment...At least, that's the best explanation I could think of. Maybe the movie just wanted to have a way to keep the tension going after all the developed characters died.

    The part that i like the most ,is they all dead at the end, that really says they all sacrifice themselves for a higher goal. And really says how important and dangerous the mission was. And the part Jyn went to beach with Cassian to embrace the death.
    This is what makes this movie unique. The only thing i don't like , is i can't see more of Felicity Jones in another Star Wars. To be honest, she would make a better Rey.

      As I understand it, ep 1-6 is how the force corrected an imbalance (getting rid of dark side users). The will of the force doesn't seem to be straightforward and logical, but that might mean there's an element of free will in regards to the force. Imagine the force is a river. It diverts around stones and animals with in it, but it ultimately still reaches the sea.

      It's just a spin on "Everything happens for a reason" mixed in like a prayer. However...many people fall back on this...saying this good or bad thing happened for a reason we may or may not be able to see at the moment. There can't be any good without the bad...You can't overcome evil, unless there is evil.

    Okay, I know this is gonna be a bit controversial, because I saw this movie after just watching (for the first time ever) A New Hope, and I thought this movie was absolutely amazing even though I didn't get nostalgic, or get the throwbacks. It's just an amazing movie overall; the score, the pacing, the cinematography, the acting, everything.

    Honestly, I had ten times the hype for The Force Awakens than I did for this, but I had a much better experience watching Rogue One than that. Also CG Han Solo would be pretty lit, but I think it would be a bit of a distraction. I spent most of the Tarkin scenes staring at his face trying to figure out whether or not it was CGI or really good makeup.

      @mguanipa2 8 років тому +6

      LeinadTM I fully agree. Force awakens had just so much fucking money in marketing and everyone was hyped about it
      There reasonings to "keep it safe" not only will impact the rest of the trilogy, but also the characters as well too since they are all so similar to the people before them
      Rogue one was something new, and that something new enhanced not only the original trilogy, but even the prequels at the same time, while giving a fantastic plot line, great characters, and action scenes that makes everything else just look foolish in comparrison
      Really is the best star wars movie ever

    • @solomonjaro9630
      @solomonjaro9630 8 років тому +7

      Yeah, for me personally it was the emotional roller coaster. I feel like Star Wars never really captured the true feelings as a main focus in previous films (Despite Lucas saying it was supposed to be about family or whatever the fuck he thought, but we all know after the originals he just turned into an idiot (if he wasn't before, anyway...)) This gets you really attached to the characters in such a short time, and I personally didn't see the deaths of all the main characters coming (I know a lot of people did but for some reason I didn't latch onto that) And to see them brought down, 1 by 1, really gets to us because we see that they put their mission and the safety/future of the galaxy in front of their own lives. It isn't planned by Jen, Cassien or any of the other rebels to have them all die, but to see that further into the battle when they are split up they know what they must do for the benefit of the galaxy!
      Along with all this we have cameos and some insight into Grand Moff Tarkin (even if he looked like a video game character) and who can ignore the Darth Vader scenes, we see him vulnerable and kept at the site of his former master's 'betrayal' (from his point of view) as a form of torture (I think) done by the emperor. And that scene at the end was just epic, it showed how evil the little boy from Tatooine has become and also showing how desperate those rebel troopers were to get the plans to Leia.
      Among other things like the references to the prequels (as much as they sucked, I love how they incorporated them to make the prequels feel believable and almost important to the star wars franchise), for example Leia's adoptive father being played by the same actor, leads to this movie being as close to perfection as possible (still flaws of course like the stupid octopus mind thing, that was pointless) in my view, I loved it for sure!!!

    "I am one with the Force and the Force is with me" really is one of the best lines from this film. I think my favourite character had to be K2 or Cherrut- I love the idea of a blind Jedi using the Force and kicking ass. When I came out of the theater from TFA I was super excited; but when I came out from Rogue One I kind of underwhelmed. But upon rethinking, Rogue One is a much better movie. It's darker, it has nostalgia but doesn't shove it down your throat, it makes ANH a better movie, and it ties the prequels to original trilogy...and of course that Vader scene. Yet there are plenty of emotional parts: when Jyn sees the message from her father, when she has to leave his body behind, K-2SO's death, etc.
    I liked having characters that mattered in the universe that weren't Jedi or the Skywalker family. The only thing I really missed was the John Williams score, it just doesn't feel like SW without it. I would currently rank SW:
    1. Empire Strikes Back
    2. Rogue One
    3. New Hope
    4. Revenge of the Sith
    5. Force Awakens
    6. Return of the Jedi
    7. Attack of the Clones
    8. Phantom Menace

    I honestly thought this was the best Star Wars movie yet. It was shot ten times better than any of the others. Although, the original trilogy was shot 30, 40 years ago, so that's not very fair...lol.
    Anyway, the characters weren't as solid as they could be (from a development standpoint), but it worked. They didn't seem to force the cameos. They all fit in to me, including Darth Vader.
    I also liked that everyone died. No one does that these days. Someone always flies in and saves the protagonist(s). This time? NOPE. I was pleasantly surprised. Didn't have to wonder where the characters are made anew for prequels were in the originals.
    From a filmmaker's perspective, I loved this movie. The lower f stop, the tighter camera angles, the slower build up and plot development, and no hokey lines. I much preferred K's sarcasm to Fin's "Yeah! I am DEFINITELY with the resistance." This movie was well written compared to The Force Awakens especially.
    Overall, I liked this movie. Best Star Wars yet. The darker tone was needed and so was the slow plot. It was different, but in a good way. The $200M Rogue One has raked in so far gives me hope that this film will get the credit I believe it deserves. Even if I didn't like the movie, the up-to-the-minute connections to A New Hope reveals the missing piece in the puzzle, filling the gap that leads up to the film that started it all. I thoroughly enjoyed Star Wars: Rogue One.

  • @Pandaemoni
    @Pandaemoni 8 років тому +4

    Great review. Two points about Vader's scenes Vader had to be in the movie because A New Hope establishes that (1) his is somehow affiliated with the Death Star program, even though the Death Star is under Tarkin's command and (2) Vader was the one pursuing the stolen plans in Episode 4, and his sorcerer's ways were not yielding results. So there being no Vader in this movie, and then suddenly he turns up tracking down and capturing the Tantive IV would have been odd. It might almost suggest that Tarkin was being watched...he's in charge of the project, but the Emperor swiftly sends in his right hand man now that the plans are gone.
    So that means that having Vader there at the end and Tarkin asserting that Vader was in charge of dealing the rebel fleet makes it seem like *Tarkin* asked him to handle that part of it, so Tarkin and Vader are copacetic. It then makes perfect sense that Vader pursues the Tantive IV, because they knew the plans were uploaded (in part because the capital ship Vader would have been directing crashed into anf nullified the planetary shield) and they knew that some ships escaped the system, with those plans (and it was Vader's job to deal with them). Not one to pass the buck, of course Vader--and not Tarkin--hunted down the escaped ships, including the Tantive IV).
    That's the space battle scene, what about the castle on Mustafar? I feel there were two purposes. First, it was character development for Krennic, who was not only intemperate and vainglorious, but enough so to try to end run his boss--and risking his life by appealing to Vader (who was so terrifying that the Imperial Pilot Bodhi was frightened just hearing Saw Gerrera breath through a mask)--just to get credit from the Emperor directly. And getting choked for it. That is a big risk to take and does say something about his obsession with gaining status.
    Second, and more importantly, that scene in the castle established that Vader was also involved in the project and knew the details. Without it, Vader shows up at the end like an evil and convenient deus ex machina descending from the ceiling unexpectedly. With this scene, it makes perfect sense that Tarkin would have called on Vader since Vader is no fan of Krennic, is involved in the process and is a capable warrior with military experience.
    (Now, what maybe makes less sense is how Tarkin new to tell Vader "and when you get there, deal with the Rebel fleet." Even the rebels didn't know they were sending a fleet until they did, and Tarkin wouldn't have known that the rebels would be attacking the archive *right* at that moment...so I felt like there was some convenient foresight on his part. But I have only seen it once, so maybe there was some reason for his foreknowledge I missed.)

      Unless they get Ford to play it and go directly off his expressions this is a recipe for failure. It's about the performance at least as much as the technology. Also, the insane amount of work involved in realistically crafting every nuance of a main character is something else entirely to the few scenes of Tarkin, who didn't seem to work for half the audience anyway. Certainly didn't work for me, especially the moments when he occupied the same frame as a real human.

      And someone points out to Tarkin that blowing up their own archives and men would probably only cause more defections, and the emperor may not be too happy about losing all his data. Yes they lost some massive plans but, they had a good chance of getting them back and almost did. Also they could still use and probably need all the un-stolen ones. It's like burning down your house because you have an ant problem. Then again that man was so trigger happy he blew up a planet for no reason other to rub it in Leia's face and then eventually costs him his own life (thank you Luke and Han).

      @mandokomixkid You sure? I know in the Legends universe you have to use the Force, but outside of the deleted Mark Hamill scene for ROTJ I don't think lightsaber building was ever established in the movies. So they could get away with it for the general crowd that only looks upon the Canon universe this film is set in.

      snuke37 I guess so, in my opinion the original trilogy movies are the most cliche, I most likely preferred rogue one to all the others because it is so much darker, which I feel just allows the creators so much more freedom in plot line as it doesn't have to be family friendly

I realize they were pretty sparing with their CG characters, and it was all pretty stable, low-action shots, but this definitely felt like it COULD be proof-of-concept for another movie (hopefully Han Solo standalone) with more extensive use of the technique. Fingers crossed!

It's not a perfect movie and has its flaws but this is the first Star wars movie that hit me emotionally because that has never happened before. It shows how these people who are not force users or anything can be brave and the fight the good fight even if the odds are stacked against them. true,but i meant comparing the enemies and the tone, the first movie had a mysterious and feared villan, darth vader, it had some jokes but they werent plastered everywhere to break the suspense or silly, wheras the force awakens, kylo ren was mysterious, but that was before his helmet was removed, and jokes/puns are plastered around the film which makes it a lighter tone compared to the original trilogy,

    Thank God there's at least one UA-camr out there doesn't hate CG Tarkin! Also, I loved this movie, and I'm happy to see a non cynical overanalyzed review. There's no perfect Star Wars movie out there! You could nit pick every single one, but the movies as a whole entertain us, bring us to an amazing universe that fascinates us, and tells us a stories of hope and redemption. Even the much vilified prequels have a great story, even if film production disappointed us. This movie gave us a great story, with the feel of the originals and all of the polish our modern technology allows. I easily rank it amongst the original trilogy, which I could not even say for VII.

    Actually now that your brought it up, and having seen the movie. Those scenes with Jyn on the beach (with the death star plans in her hand) means that in one cut of the film, she and Cassian were intended to survive....

  • @SGz_Eliminated
    @SGz_Eliminated 8 років тому +22

    SPOILER - I wonder if in the original cut some of them survived? Because some of the death scenes seemed totally rushed, in fact all of the death scenes apart from K2SO's seemed rushed. I don't mind that they all died, I just wished it put a bit of emotional investment in there. Only character's death you cared about was K2SO and Gin

      @Capt_Chaos_91 8 років тому +6

      Sam Trott I kind of agree with you. It occurred to me halfway through watching the movie, they would all die. But it made more sense to have them die off rather that live and not appear in A New Hope. Even like "what's her name" said in episode IV, "a lot of people died to bring us this information"... Outstanding!

    • @BaronVonHoovy
      @BaronVonHoovy 8 років тому +1

      Think that was actually the *second* Death Star. "Many Bothans died to bring us this information," refers to them dying to get the plans for the second Death Star, which obviously would have been altered to shore up the weakness that enabled the destruction of the first.

    • @SGz_Eliminated
      @SGz_Eliminated 8 років тому +1

      "A lot of them died" doesn't mean they all had to die.

    • @SGz_Eliminated
      @SGz_Eliminated 8 років тому +3

      You've completely missed the point of my comment and I thought I made it pretty darn clear. Just because characters die doesn't mean they have to be rushed deaths. I've seen many films, including war ones where the main characters die but its a gradual thing so you're emotionally invested in the characters.
      Rogue One was just everything is fine... dead... the end. The deaths were rushed and completely random and non sensical. KS20's made sense because he was holding the storm troopers off in the room and helping the two inside the vault. The rest just died because PLOT demands it. Funny how you state plot as the thing that usually saves the main people in other films, but the only reason they all died in this one was because the plot demanded it.

    You can strike me down if you want, but I think rogue one is my favorite star wars movie yet.

  • @heyitsyeh

    Since we know the second 'Star Wars story' is going to be about Han Solo...
    Ideas for the third:
    Obi-Wan aging fast in the desert
    Ackbar's ascendancy
    'Many Bothans...' (essentially 'Rogue Two')
    How Jar Jar ended up on Alderaan
    Boba Fett...nuff said
    'Always two there are, no more, no less...'
    Dooku (CGI Lee) and Qui-Gonn misadventures

      The third movie should be about Vader hunting down of all the Jedi after Episode 3 and the start of the rebellion.

      Riiiiiiiiiiight because it makes more sense for Vader not to be there. GTFO Vader being there makes sense and fits in the story. It wasn't fan service. Fans loved it but had there been no Vader in a movie that ends literally minutes before A New Hope begins it would be a disservice to storytelling. Your comment makes me think you have zero clue what fan service even means.

      I liked Vader, but he didn't have to be there. Tarkin could have said, "inform Lord Vader blah blah." It was just a visual treat. Awesome for sure, but just acknowledge it for what it was

    Yeah, I also really loved the movie.
    And the slow pace, I loved that too since they actually got around telling a story (not a bunch of unconnected action scenes).
    And why I think I really loved the characters was because they all had depth and identity.
    I wish this director would be making the other Star Wars movies too :D

    Dude you nailed this review. Because I've only seen the film once. And I felt the same way you felt when you saw it just the first time. But after watching this video it makes perfect sense. Probably the best critiquing of any film that I've ever seen. Congrats bro
