Because it was so long since I had chickens, I had to relearn everything. And fortunately I only had one chick with a tiny amount of pasty butt and I used warm water. It's surprising what you can forget if you're not actively raising chickens. But my baby chicks are almost 5 weeks old. My all female hens has a few roosters. But I'm grateful I can still have chickens.
I actually had an old mascara wand sitting in my drawer, I sanitized it and it helped a LOT with breaking the poop down really gently. Also helps their down dry faster 😊
We have had several chicks with pasty butt. We lost a couple from it unfortunately. 😔😢 I found running their little rear under warm water works well. We also blow dry them immediately afterwards on low setting to dry them up. Wrap them up in a small towel and put back in the brooder. Then put a little Neosporin or antibiotic ointment around the vent area to prevent further sticking. You can also use Vaseline. Learned all this from a chicken book 🤓 Changing their food helped. Also blended up some oatmeal and cornmeal and mixed with their food as well as gave them probiotic in water. Pasty butt is serious. 😢
My mom said it also helps to prevent them from getting sick and now that i see ur comment i have not been putting apple cider vinegar in my chickens water😬

I was already planning on checking daily; but I suddenly had a thought that “if you put the chicks under running water or dab at their tail ends, wouldn’t it make them get sick?” (I have 2 Americanas and 1 buff Orpington, and a mystery egg from my uncle’s mix of chickens)
Hi! I wouldn’t do it every day, just keep an eye on them and clean as needed. If you’re lucky you won’t have to at all! We ended up having one bird we had to clean roughly 3 times but other than that we were good!
Purina & Sav-a-Chick both make a probiotic that you mix with water & put in a separate water container for the first 3 or 4 days. Apple Cider Vinegar is another good thing to use. Make sure to get "Raw & Unfiltered ACV" and it should say "With the Mother" on the label. Make sure you shake the bottle up before you mix 1 TBS with 1 Gal.water. When they hatch their digestive tract is basically sterile and need the boost. In the wild chicks follow the hen around and peck at everything so they pick up good bacteria naturally. If you buy your chick's from a store this Should already have been done but don't count on it. You can also feed clover & chickweed from your yard as long as NO chemicals have been used after day 5 or 6, just make sure to tear or chop it into small pieces first. A little bit of apple cider vinegar in their water helps prevent pasty butt as it aids their digestion.

I just lost 3 baby chicks this is SERIOUS, everyday i check them and clean them in warm water and rub all the gunk off
