Fixed: Repairing Screw Holes in a Hollow Core Door | BBQ Skewers to the Rescue

Most of the time, repairs around the house come up our of nowhere. Somehow, the towel rack on a hollow core door got ripped down. We still don't know how that happened. I'm fixing the stripped out screw holes with some pieces of wooden BBQ skewers, then smoothing it out with some wood filler. I like to try to fix things like this with real wood instead of filling it with filler. I'm basically just plugging the holes. I'll reattach the towel bar in a different spot using anchors made for hollow core doors. Even with anchors, please don't hang on the towel bar. Lol.

As I was thinking about this repair... Since you will be needing to repaint, I would attach a backer-board (maybe a 2" wide by 1/4' thick) that spans the width of the door. Then screw that backer-board into the edge areas where there is internal support boards. I would mount the backer-board over the striped-out holes so you wouldn't even have to patch anything. You can even glue this backer-board on for added strength. Then just mount the towel bar on the new backer-board using conventional screws (no anchors required). Just my two cents.

I spent well over an hour trying to hold up a door w/ my foot while trying to fix the top. I tried Shoe Goo & gluing little cardboard pieces to hold the screws, just made a mess. Tried hammering the screws sideways - still fell off. I'm so over this door & trying to do man stuff, I'm just going to throw away the door & hang a curtain. Good video though, thank you for sharing!

Same question. I’m in a rental unit and the closet door is hollow. The handle was screwed with no supports and popped out the first day. Maintenance screwed it back with no anchor and it literally fell out within an hour

Concerned that the dowel might get loose and fall into the hollow of the door. If that happened, the dowel would bounce around and make a lot of noise every time the door was opened or closed. Then the door would have to be replaced.

Personally, I would have put four 2" dowels in from the side of the door and screw into them!!

Thats another good idea. And it would give you solid wood to screw in to. Might be tricky to drill into the center of the dowel though but it could be done with some careful measuring.
