From my perspective, he does not have the habit of a good alignment. If you agree, maybe you could emphasize this aspect on his future lessons.
Ed's old school sense (eg alignment) is still good, because it's sense, even if it's nowhere near common, to judge from all the slashers and heavers that comprise the vast majority of amateurs. Snead's sense is even better than Ed's, because a 2 by 4 block of wood will concentrate your mind much more than a cardboard box which can't break your club and your arm! :) However, on the subject of new technology, Ed has been baffled by bullshit about spin (pun intended). The reason a draw typically rolls further than a slice has nothing to do with new driver technology - it's because a draw is produced by a closed clubface (relative to the line of flight) which is delofted, whereas a slice is produced by an open clubface, which adds loft. This applies to all clubfaces and all materials, whether wood, metal or composite. Plus, modern driver clubfaces are so deep, tees are higher than they used to be, so the impact is more on the upswing, so the flight is high, even with less backspin. The new materials do compress the ball better (and modern balls respond better, so average drive length has increased). Because pros can hit it so far, they want to limit the roll, to reduce variation in distance due to turf variation and slope and so forth. But for us hackers (sorry, i meant old hackers like me, not young experts like you and your grandson), a draw is still as good today as it was in 1924.

Hi Ed, That video was priceless. Thank you so much for sharing your 30 plus years of golf knowledge. This is definitely a video I will watch over and over. Jay Mulligan
Short breakdown if you'd rather read instead of watching. 1. **Importance of Setup**: - Getting into the right stance before hitting the ball is crucial. It’s like making sure your car is pointed in the right direction before driving. A good setup helps you hit the ball straighter and more consistently. 2. **Driver Technology**: - Modern drivers (the big club used to hit long shots) are designed to help you hit the ball farther and straighter. These clubs have features that make it easier to get good results, even if your swing isn’t perfect. 3. **Tee Height**: - The height of the tee (the small stand you put the ball on) affects how well you hit the ball. Too high or too low, and it’s harder to make good contact. Finding the right height helps you hit the ball cleanly. 4. **Ball Position**: - Where you place the ball between your feet affects your swing. If the ball is too far forward or back, it can make it harder to hit well. Proper ball position makes your swing feel more natural and effective. 5. **Distance from the Ball**: - Standing at the right distance from the ball is key. If you’re too close or too far, your swing won’t work as smoothly. Finding the right spot helps you swing naturally and hit the ball better. 6. **Releasing the Club**: - Releasing the club means letting it swing freely through the ball. Timing this right helps you get more power and accuracy. It’s like letting a door swing open smoothly without stopping it. 7. **Avoiding Penalty Shots**: - On the course, there are areas like water or sand that can cost you extra strokes. A smart strategy is to avoid these areas, just like you’d avoid potholes while driving. This keeps your score lower. 8. **Irons and Approach Shots**: - When hitting onto the green, it’s important to know how far the ball will go and where it will land. Just like throwing a ball to a friend, you need to judge the distance accurately to get it close to the hole. 9. **Chipping and Pitching**: - These are short shots near the green. Choosing the right technique, whether a chip or pitch, helps you control how the ball lands and rolls toward the hole. It’s about picking the right tool for the job. 10. **Setup and Alignment**: - Before putting, setting up properly and lining up the putt are key. If you’re aligned correctly, the ball is more likely to go where you want. It’s like aiming carefully before taking a shot in pool. 11. **Putting Technique**: - The way you swing the putter determines how straight and far the ball rolls. A smooth, controlled swing with the right alignment helps you sink more putts, just like rolling a ball along a straight path. 12. **Key Skills to Master**: - To improve your golf game, focus on hitting the ball accurately, controlling your distance, and understanding the course’s slopes. Mastering these skills will make you a more consistent and successful golfer.

Many thanks for the fantastic advice, maybe you can do a part 2 when you include hybrids and chipping as even the short game video (link) its more 1/2 third, fly advice but doesn't go into technique of chipping, i.e. break wrist or stiff wrist, arms motion or body motion, chip with 6 iron or just chip with PW, set up, level or stacked on lead side. I always remember the story when Ben Hogan was asked "Mr. Hogan how can I become a better putter?" his answer was "learn how to chip better". Hole proximity equals more putts made. Your videos are brilliant, always full of golden nuggets, much appreciated.
If the player is slicing the ball, then check ball position and if needed more the ball forward and strengthen the grip. Because if they slice with a driver, they likely slice with most clubs.
I have tried your driver tips today, I was much better and no hooks at all. I did notice I broke a few tees, I think I am hitting down on the ball a bit. Do you have any good drills for hitting up on the driver and also on aiming on the course. I tried the distance from the ball tips and that helped as well. Many thanks for such a great channel.
We're 8 minutes in and this is making more sense than any golf videos I've ever seen. Thank you for the no nonsense BS sir. Ooops. First mistake. Sorry sir, wrong. FULL STOP: To be a single digit handicap, you DO NOT need to hit 10-12 GRI's. 6-8 AT MOST. Done. I'm a 10.8 and I average only 4 a round. The PGA average is 12. Many do not get that even. This stat you give is CRAZY WRONG.
Im so happy to hear a teaching pro say what ive always believed ,and always get crap over on the tee…. Ive steadily raised my tee height , mostly because of everyone i play with gives me grief about teeing to low…. I would try to get at absolute most ,half the ball above the top of the rested driver behind the ball… I don’t know why ive let others convince me to get higher and higher ….well actually i do know…back in the day the only way i could fight my super high push right with a slice drive was to tee low and way back in my stance …like way back , middle to even behind middle would give me a low liner that would go perfectly straight 50% of the time , slice or hook the other 50% but more of those would be playable …and i crushed the distance and roll out this way ,….in the early 2000’s , maybe 2003 /2004 i was crushing a beginner sets(from Dicks sporting “Acuity”)driver 300 yards consistently …would hit most balls on the range out over the long distance fence imto the woods beyond it (fence wasnt marked but the 250 was conservatively 50 yards before it) … when ever i got on the links though, playing partners would tell me after a miss hit that if only i teed higher ,etc etc… over time ,and a ton of bad drives later, i now tee ball almost to the top of the drivers top and at my front foot (almost ) …think like you say the technology helps my slice become a fade more often so i get away with a lot .. but since driver is my most erratic club im definitely going to experiment with lower tee height again ,when this heat wave finally breaks of course 😂👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Thank you for these “FREE” tips/ lessons etc given in a easily digestible way for us hackers
Did i miss a different putter grip ..? Meaning drastically different from regular club grip …? Saw left hand low suggestion , but i basically “grip”the putter as i would any club..funny thing is ill interlock a lot of times with putter when im a 10 finger grip on every other club 🤷🏼♂️✌️👍🏼
Ive used that practice putting stroke while looking at the hole since i saw that first video …havent been to a practice green but before every putt during a round i do this and it has definitely helped dramatically for me
Most important things I heard are the importance of ball position and the fade bias of modern drivers and playing from further back in stance even with driver. The one thing I didnt hear after listening to 20 minutes of the video is the control of club face at top of the backswing. This is what I am struggling with the most and what the hack motion sensor tries to fix.
I tend to slice my driver a lot. But this usually happens when I swing hard at it, is this because I swing too close to myself in my stance? or is it because I dont turn my wrist in time? When I swing it easier it goes fairly straight
Jack Nicklaus was left eye dominant so many people think that is an advantage. The common school of thought is the heavier dominant eye behind the ball so if your left eye dominant that would move the ball position more forward I’m not sure. I think you should still make a motion with the golf cluband a traditional group the club should be in the middle of your stance in the ball slightly forward that being said it’s worth experimenting some people claim that having your left eye behind the ball with the ball slightly forward center help you see the target line easier
First tip , keep the ball position correct for the club , lie and path , was enough . Gir means very little to me as i like an up and down , id prefer to lay up somewhere nice than miss somewhere awful so unless im 100 percent that i can hit gir im hitting a set up shot . Learn all the wedge shots there are but master one , truly and from anywhere .
Not sure about that uphill/downhill colour change rule at the end. If you go to the top of an uphill bit, it's now downhill so where does that leave the rule?
At the beginning of this video I saw that your driver has an oversized grip. Would you be willing to touch on that in a future video? I've seen more videos pop up about grip size, but not a lot of information based on physical hand ir body size, age, mobility, etc. My Dad is 70 and about your size (from what I can tell) hes still got those blue collar hands but hes got some arthritis setting in which i think affects his grip. I would love to get him an oversized grip on an old driver he has to see how it works for him and maybe help him out a little bit before commiting to regriping all his clubs.
That’s exactly why I have an oversize grip. I’m getting old and my hands hurt. I’ve had a jumbo size grip on like Bryson has, but I thought that was just too large and have since gone to a midsize. I don’t have to squeeze near as hard it relaxes my hands and forearms, and I think I generate more clubhead speed, I think it’s an old wives tale that larger grips prevent release. I’d recommend he tried at least on one club to see what he thinks.
I've always heard the exact opposite, that the further back the ball in your stance the more likely you are to hook the ball, and the further forward the more likely you are to slice the ball. This makes a lot of sense to me because the further back the ball is, the more in to out you are going to be, you are catching your swing path's arc earlier, and the later in your path you hit the more, the more you are already past the bottom of your arc and beginning to come out to in. This is the first time in hundreds and hundreds of videos that I have heard the opposite. Can anyone who is smarter than me elaborate? Edit: literally right after I typed this he commented that it can be the opposite for some players, ope lol.
Keep in mind that it’s not only club path, but also club face (because of the face to path relationship) that determines curvature of the ball flight. So it can be either situation and we recommend experimenting to see what happens in your swing
So maybe I have the ball a little to forward? My miss is I hit left, not a hook, but straight left. It’s frustrating to hit great well hit strait drive left that ends up in left rough or trees or whatever.
the only thing I can't do out of all of those tips is pronate the left arm turn, Have some nerve damage issues. . never have that ability , that's why I am a R/H dominate.
Wow! I thought this video was going to be gimmicky. Thank you for making a video like this. I will definitely be coming back to this for things that I need to remember or learn. This seems like a last ditch information dump so that years worth of knowledge won't be lost. Thank you.
17:50 min in you lost me at baseball. also idk about the wrist thing. i may try tomorrow evenign at the range but i think i got the driver down. my stance is too wide, and i lift my front foot

I would try to get at absolute most ,half the ball above the top of the rested driver behind the ball… I don’t know why ive let others convince me to get higher and higher ….well actually i do know…back in the day the only way i could fight my super high push right with a slice drive was to tee low and way back in my stance …like way back , middle to even behind middle would give me a low liner that would go perfectly straight 50% of the time , slice or hook the other 50% but more of those would be playable …and i crushed the distance and roll out this way ,….in the early 2000’s , maybe 2003 /2004 i was crushing a beginner sets(from Dicks sporting “Acuity”)driver 300 yards consistently …would hit most balls on the range out over the long distance fence imto the woods beyond it (fence wasnt marked but the 250 was conservatively 50 yards before it) … when ever i got on the links though, playing partners would tell me after a miss hit that if only i teed higher ,etc etc… over time ,and a ton of bad drives later, i now tee ball almost to the top of the drivers top and at my front foot (almost ) …think like you say the technology helps my slice become a fade more often so i get away with a lot .. but since driver is my most erratic club im definitely going to experiment with lower tee height again ,when this heat wave finally breaks of course 😂👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you for these “FREE” tips/ lessons etc given in a easily digestible way for us hackers
Ive used that practice putting stroke while looking at the hole since i saw that first video …havent been to a practice green but before every putt during a round i do this and it has definitely helped dramatically for me
Your driver is it a Ventus Red 5R or a R2?
Most important things I heard are the importance of ball position and the fade bias of modern drivers and playing from further back in stance even with driver.
The one thing I didnt hear after listening to 20 minutes of the video is the control of club face at top of the backswing. This is what I am struggling with the most and what the hack motion sensor tries to fix.
I will watch this everyday until I'm scratch.
I tend to slice my driver a lot. But this usually happens when I swing hard at it, is this because I swing too close to myself in my stance? or is it because I dont turn my wrist in time? When I swing it easier it goes fairly straight
I'm right-handed but left eye dominant. Does that make a difference in putting setup? Thanks
So was Jack
First tip , keep the ball position correct for the club , lie and path , was enough .
Gir means very little to me as i like an up and down , id prefer to lay up somewhere nice than miss somewhere awful so unless im 100 percent that i can hit gir im hitting a set up shot .
Learn all the wedge shots there are but master one , truly and from anywhere .
A few hot takes in there I love it!
Not sure about that uphill/downhill colour change rule at the end. If you go to the top of an uphill bit, it's now downhill so where does that leave the rule?
What grips are on your irons/driver?
Lampkin
I’d recommend he tried at least on one club to see what he thinks.
how many years i missed it
1.5 is the perfect playback speed👌🏼
Outstanding video, many thanks and best regards from Germany 👋⛳
What’s your favorite course to play in Germany?
@@TheGolfSensei feel invited to "Golf Bad Muenstereifel" it is close to Cologne.

"I know I'm right" 👏
Yes 2x
Ok
Instead of the cardboard box, I use a cinder block.
I thought you shouldnt be bottoming out the driver when u make contact? Should bottom out just before so ur hitting up on it?
Wow! I thought this video was going to be gimmicky. Thank you for making a video like this. I will definitely be coming back to this for things that I need to remember or learn. This seems like a last ditch information dump so that years worth of knowledge won't be lost. Thank you.
Yes it is..hope it’s my legacy
If you are trying to hit down just bit with the driver, why not just hit a 3 wood? It is easy to hit because it’s shorter and has more loft.
At 14:33 I believe you meant to say supinating.
I did
Yes, I tried to pronate and blew out my shoulder!
Here’s 200 years of golf experience and the only thing you need to know …. ITS ALL IN THE HANDS
Exactly
PXG gives away a lot of hats to instructors...
17:50 min in you lost me at baseball. also idk about the wrist thing. i may try tomorrow evenign at the range but i think i got the driver down. my stance is too wide, and i lift my front foot
I felt like he was fr speaking to me
