Who am I?
I am the honest vocal coach! I have been teaching for 16 years and been singing since I was 17. I teach from my own studio and via Skype. I specialise in teaching children, and teenagers pop and musical theatre but I am trained in all genres of music. I don't think I've ever heard Avril Lip sync. I've seen her live a few times and sounds amazing every time.

She's one of the very few singers that writes her own music and produces it..and she takes care of her voice. .not saying this cause im a fan im telling it like is .She's a perfectionist and takes pride in her music and that's what you call a true artist
Das: i can only think of one or two songs where she has done that...5 albums (10 or 11 songs on each), and 35 + b-side tracks and around 9 cover songs or remixes...you do the math Mr Pessimistic. she has enough B side tracks to make like 2 or three more albums...but alas she never has sadly...but she could...all the songs belong to her...and she wrote them.

I mean I agree, but we cannot say if they recorded a variation of the song. Sometimes tracks get modified so it is different to the original.

On 6:29 it's loud and clearly that she's NOT lip syncin'. "I'm too young to fall asleep" ... The asleep its faster than the track. She n.e.v.e.r lip sync

Das Bienchen voices change as you get older. And she has Lyme disease which affects her voice.

I have MRSA. It changed my voice. I cannot hit high notes anymore. My voice breaks.
Lyme effects everyone differently. Heart, muscles, joints, nervous system are all possible. Wherever the bug decides to go. I had Lyme and was bed bound for 2 years as well.
Lyme disease affect Shania Twain´s voice really bad :(
I think, she had luck and the lyme disease didn't affect her voice. To my ears she sings better than ever. But of course I can't tell how much effort it costs her. Maybe it is more difficult to sing than before. The only difference I can spot is more routine and less rawness compared to her early years.
I think she also just sings with a little bit brighter placement now, which is probably more sustainable long term...
She has NEVER lip synced. Seriously, never. I'm a fan of hers for more than 10 years. There doesn't exist a performance where she would lip synced. She has a very little of performances with a band playback, because of the TV shows she was on. And this wasn't even one of the best :D but the only of HAW so far. We can definitely expect more and even better in the future :) It was her first performance in 3 years and second in 4 years. Thank you for review :)) If you are curious, you can watch Avril live in Japan tv show from 2011 singing her song Alice. People that don't know her think it's playback. She sounds insanely good.

Actually, she has lip synced once when she performed at the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. All artists had to do so and she lip synced to a pre-recorded live track. The singing started and the microphone wasn't even near her face. But yes, this was the only exception. Apart from that she always sang live without playback.
Well.. she lip-synced on the Macy's thanksgiving day parade. But I guess everyone is forced to do that if they want to participate on the parade. They used a "live version" where she lip-synced.

I thought this was clearly live. There are even one or two vocal bobbles that I doubt would be on a track. I think the males are singing falsetto, if that's the correct term, for the "female" background vocals (or maybe a track). I think some people may have been confused by that, or more likely by just how good Avril is singing live.
No doubt this is sung live. (As always with Avril.) I think it sounds like she has a cold. Like she can’t breathe through her nose. Maybe thats the “robotic” sound you can hear. I think every Avril fan can tell when she has a cold 😂 Not so bad here though. I love her new song!

Avril isn’t known for not singing live it’s just not her. She’s awesome and sings live and mentions that in interviews where she says it her job to sing , truly sing which to her is live. She started by singing in her church as a kid and she said this song brought her back to those roots. Always been a fan of Avril then and even now. She’s amazing and her voice has really developed more over the years. Also, during this performance you can hear slight drops and changes at the end of a line versus the studio version. Loved this live performance of her new single!! 💛
I think it was live. Some notes were different from the ones in the studio version.

She was absolutely singing live. She wouldn't lip sync. She collaborated on this song with Travis Clark the lead singer of We The Kings and Stephan Moccio by the way, there is a picture of Travis and Avril on his Instagram from the day they collaborated on this song. And as far as I can remember she's always had a hand in writing her own music.

there are only two singers i admire on live vocals: avril lavigne, and hayley williams from paramore (would be great to see you react to her) and for me, this is definitely live with a rather loud backing track. And also something to do with post editing of the video and all that. I think the same thing was done with Paramore's Last Hope Live music video where Hayley sings live but her vocals were processed to make it sound smoother and idk more stable on the final video. this song is very special to Avril, i don't think she would ever not sing it live. There is a minor way of telling if Avril is singing live is how she pronounces certain words. on Kimmel the word is can't.

Love your review, because as a hugeeeee avril's fan I know she has always said the same thing you said: "must sing live! No excuses!". I think I know her voice as I listen to her music since 2002, and I can say she is really singing live, she has been sick since some years ago of Lyme, and I think that it could affect her voice just a few, when I listenee this performance I said "oh she is still sick", but still loveeee her vocals, her voice and the fact that even when she seems to be sick, she still have that will to sing alive for her fans.

I have never seen Avril lip sync and I've watched and listened to her for years. Avril is the best of the best! This song is fantastic!!! as is her performance of it!!!
There's an interview when she says she never lip-syncs and even her vocal plays in the music, she stops singing and just plays with her bands. They called that action fakers, they fake it until the vocal in back music goes away.
It was like an interview when she was a teenager.
I think that SNL actually edited the vocals a bit after the recording. So I believe that she sang 100% live, but they added some vocal reverb after, just to make it sound more epic and because it’s TV you know? They want it to sound as good as it can.

She isn't lip syncing, and I think she's never done that - at least I've never watched her lip syncing a song - , even on Talk Shows performances, as a lot of artists do (due to the lack of the band, or other issue).
You may notice she's actually singing based on the music rhythm, and comparing the voice with the origin one, she "always" add something - prolonging the note or perhaps thicken the voice, idk. She might use mic effects to help, as you said, but not lip syncing... :D

My aunt is a professional singer, and we both can't stand it when someone uses autotune.
I think it's live, but potentially autotuned. It sounds way metallic at parts.
Avril's own voice sounds slightly robotic (metallic), so that's her singing naturally, but there is also reverb on it.
Would really love it if you culd react to "11 TIMES AVRIL LAVIGNE'S VOCALS HAD ME SHOOK" It's a compilation of some of her best vocals, would love to see what you think of it and if you like her voice and vocals since you're a vocal coach you know better than us

She is my idol since my secondary school and I also attend her concert in China. She also have a corporation with One ok rock a song called ‘listen’. A really good one in ambitions albums. Please react to One ok Rock ‘take what you want’ live performance. You will be like it!
She is singing live for sure. The one she does at Honda stage sounds more natural btw.
The problem we have here is: people don't appreciate how *competent* AL is at singing live. It sounds too good to be sung live but this is just excellent mic craft and vocal skill. I think what sounds like autotune is actually a very subtle phaser effect.
Agreed and possibly some very wet reverb in the verses. The vocal mix is so good here it can confuse those who don’t know better lol
She's never lip synched, I've been to quite a few of her shows and have always been amazed by her voice. Sometimes her singing live is better than the recorded versions. She truly has amazing voice and you can feel the heart and soul she puts in her music. You're right though, sometimes her songs have a co-writer, but anything with these kind of emotions is all her. I love that you made a video for this

I don't think that she is lip syncing. There are certain notes in the live version that aren't in the studio version and it's pretty obvious to me that she's not lip syncing...
I believe she sang it live, but since it was pre record show, maybe they did pitch-correcting before
The robotic sound I hear kind of reminds me of when I'm going for vibrato but I can't seem to open up enough or resonate the way I want to.

Been watching her my whole life and have seen her live a ton of times. I know the recorded song well enough to pick up multiple differences from that and this performance as well. She never lip syncs. She’s just THAT good of a singer.
Yes she is that bish that sings live that good, that people would rather believe she lip syncs. She doesnt, she never has. Obviously the track is not live on most tv promo,s they dont have the sound set up so they use the track . Her voice is 100% live . The back up vocalists doing the rest. The music is the instrumental version with the echo effects.

it's so crazy, she sings amazing, looks amazing and is actually singing... but the performance is so boring, so soulless, isn't it? I really like Avril, but something sounds and looks mechanical in this performance.

If you search any performance from 2002 to the present you Will see that Avril, never in her motherfucking life used auto tune. and at the same time she never play her song same as the recorded, cause, she is a really powerfull Singer, songwriter. And if you play attention the backing vocal are made by, Dan (guitar), Steve (piano) and All bery (bass guitar). So you should carefully hear the song. Its nice that a vocal coach wants to know if there is lip syncing, but in this women call Avril, you Will never ever hear that.

I challenge anyone to find a clip of Avril Lipping, one simply does not exist to this date. She’s aware of what her job is, a singer. She battled her way through laryngitis whilst on the best damn tour, I was at her first concert back after canceling 2 shows prior to the ones I was booked to see because she refused to lip her way through a set. I respect her so much for this. Her voice isn’t always perfect, but that’s exactly why it is. ‘Great music is never perfect’ - Avril Lavigne.

i think we've got some reverb and a harmonizer. i don't hear auto tune. she ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS doubles her vocals in the studio. i think they have a doubler or harmonizer here
I have seen Avril live in 2004, 2007, 2012 and now 2022. She sings live EVERYTIME and she is INCREDIBLE! She is my favourite artist since I was 3, I am now 24. I adore her.
You can hear her have little poofs of breath in the mic plus before, after on some words, there's a bit of sss. She does go flat a couple of times too. Not the bad flat or anything. I think too many artists use auto tune to the point that many can't distinguish between that and someone who's just that damn good.
Its Just a Studio effect or a echo effect It makes her voice sounds more like the original Studio version that have these effects.
I think she has come a very long way as a vocalist. She's matured and her music shows a lot of heart. I don't believe that she is lip syncing. Why artists do that is beyond me. It not only destroys their career but it destroys the heart of the music they are performing. After seeing some of her interviews, I believe she writes her own music. Cheers to Avril Lavigne, a true artist in every way.
I watched madonna perform American life on a show in 2003, she wore a dark hat and her hair ws tied back and I couldn't tell if it was live, a comment. As said that ion this particullar talk show everyone lip syncs. Then i saw her perform it on another show and it looked more love

It’s always the same with Avril. She sings live so well that it looks fake, just because we are getting so used to this new generation of lazy live singer called performers.
She would never Lip Sync in a live performance. She railed against this when she was 17 years old, through the time she became ill. She is not hypocrite, that is why her fans love her.

She was lip syncing, idk if anyone noticed but when she belted at 3:55 she moved away from the mic. when this happens you should be able to hear get quieter however the volume was the exact same. which can suggest she lip synced either parts of the song or the entire song.
however i do like this song and her as a artist.
She's in so much darkness and her hands cover her neck some of the time but wouldn't the neck area be a dead giveaway? With vibrato you can see it in the neck, also the tendons are seen stretching on the louder notes. Just a thought. Lovely song though.

I think she sang live, but she had too many sound effects (reverb, echo) going on that would make you think it's not live.

also her voice changed and became more noisy cause she had lyme disease and that affects directly to your vocals and if you don’t take care of that it can hurt your singing and avril didn’t take to much care cause she discovers she had it after a long time
Im also a fan of avril lavigne and i think she didnt lip sync all her live was all natural theres no doubt on her.
