Newcastle got a bit lucky with the Hakimi and Gordon one as the onfield decision was no penalty. If the onfield decision was penalty then it probably would have stayed like that after VAR check. When it’s debatable it is meant to stay with the on field decision.

Rugby uses VAR perfectly. In that game, it's generally the referee who asks the VAR for specific angles, specific events, specific speeds etc.

A potential solution to VAR that hasn’t been talked about:
Put the onus of the on-field ref to call for a review, rather than have VAR intervene and ask the referee to review something they may have missed - this is what they do in rugby. The ref can pause the game and allow VAR officials the time they need to check all necessary angles.
By having VAR officials ask the on field ref to check a decision, before they even see the incident they head to the monitor assuming they have made an incorrect decision.
If done in reverse, the VAR official can simply review it objectively and provide a decision. Of course, they may still get decisions wrong, but I feel that this would be a better way to implement the technology.

VAR is a tool, and if used correctly, a very accurate tool. If VAR operatives, and referees don't use it properly, then let us focus on the real issue which is quite simply the officials are either inept or do not understand the laws of the game. Either way, the VAR operatives and officials are not "fit for purpose"! There is another, rather worrying possibility - CORRUPTION! Sadly, I suspect the later might have some merit.

Trust the Brits to cry when it affects them and raise arms when it’s in their favor. Simon definitely benefit in some way from PGMOL, when they mess up, he has an eloquent closing argument but when an English team is affected in Europe, he basically just rephrases what Danny was saying and dance around the topic.

That last caller made a very sensible point about VAR to be an instrument of validation from the referee, not VAR calling on the referee to get validation. I think that's the solution right there from Chris, a Stoke fan.

Bunch of hypocrites on Talksports debating about the Ref & VAR because it's in Europe & impacted an English team, cry more! As for NUFC & Howe, what goes around, comes around, respect the Refs

So now he has a problem with refs, and yes VAR and refs work together so Simon’s criticisms against the ref is null. It’s like an oil club gets star treatment and gets a ref suspended but if it was Wolves they have to suck it up.

one thought.. it's last minute of the game and a shot on target which should have lead to a corner, although it was unintentional it was a form of obstruction penalty awarded?
