The English refs and VAR definitely get way more stick than this. Every week their being heavily criticised.

I know what’s happened here you can’t think of anything original to say. So you’ve decided to put a little twist on the ridiculous comment about the bias of English media/players . Your comment is factually incorrect and it’s boring
And lets not forget the handball by the PSG player, who went down just before half time, Isak didnt make contact and was through on goal, yet the PSG player fell to ground and handled and controlled the ball? Isnt that a red card offence?

I think if PSG had equalised from open play, I’d have no argument at all. They barraged us all 2nd half. We defended superbly well though. It’s a sucker punch. No discussion will change that now. Fair play to us though. We have gone to PSG with a 17 year old in midfield with 3 senior appearances , a bench of 2 goal keepers and academy players and still got something. Did us proud…. That solution from Chris was brilliant - if there's a call where the ref isn't 100% sure, they ask to see it again (go to the screen). Surely they know when they're not sure on something, and they can independently take another look without feeling pressure from the fact that they've been 'asked to go and have another look', which is code for "you might have got that wrong".
This COULD cost newcastle millions! In any other industry, you lose millions, your gone, end of.

True but it never had any credibility when he was saying all of that before anyway, because he's been talking out of his backside on this topic all along.
Ball to hand or hand to Ball, I feel like that's all we ever needed in terms of analysis, don't know why we departed from that.
It’s very simple. If it is an accidental hand ball give an indirect free kick instead of a penalty.
This!!!
That is still subjective, based on the refs opinion on what is accidentally.
@@lawrencehaynes6408 nothings perfect, an incident like last night would be an indirect free kick. Where as oxlade chamberlains diving save against Chelsea is a penalty
If it stops a goal I think that's not an ideal solution, but otherwise yeah I agree
yes! been saying this for years too. it cuts out diving on the edge of boxes and these 'technical touches/fouls' that give away penalties and decide games
Wait, aren’t all these guys saying exactly what Arteta said?..
It’s about needing clear and conclusive evidence to overturn the onfield decision.
Newcastle got a bit lucky with the Hakimi and Gordon one as the onfield decision was no penalty. If the onfield decision was penalty then it probably would have stayed like that after VAR check. When it’s debatable it is meant to stay with the on field decision.
There was no debate about the last penalty, yet the on field decision was still over turned. That’s what is so mental about it
Simon's right, the ref could have just said no penalty still.
The ball deflects off the chest and hits the back of his hand which is in a natural position....no penalty.
Its basically like they wanted to reinvigorate the handball rule as it barely was ever used ....because NO PLAYERS especially defenders try to handle the ball in the box ON PURPOSE as they know that WILL cause a pen. That would defeat the entire purpose of defending.
You can also easily tell if its deliberate due to the fact the action is so quick and the decision to do it and the actions involved look different to all the other millions of instances you've seen of players naturally behaving.
Incorrect. They handle the ball to stop a goal and hope its a penalty and they miss it or the ref doesnt give the penalty. Players intentionally handball all the time. Its human instinct. What you rather the opponent have a pen or a goal?
@@ljs185 Give me 10 examples from this season.
No it was because players got very good at making deliberate handballs “look” like inadvertent handballs.
@@stevenhaas9622 C'mon. How long have you been watching football? Have you ever played the game competitively? Most hand balls are not done deliberately. Wake up. That hand ball was not done deliberately. His arm was in a natural position. When you are running and trying to stop a player advancing, you don't run with your arms by your side. It hit his leg and his arm was not extended far from his body. You can't tell me that Livramento's arm wasn't in a natural position.
Two weeks ago it was “respect the referee’s authority. VAR isn’t perfect. Arsenal should stop complaining”
Fast forward to now and the hypocrisy is laughable 😂

@axel5178 what do you mean "everyone"? Please speak for yourself. That was a stone wall penalty. A draw was a fair result. Next time when newcastle cheat, you speak up and not tell the other side to accept the result. Because Karma is real.
There is nothing wrong with VAR, the issue is the incompetence of the people running it… they are told it has to be clear and obvious, if something happens and it’s not clear and obvious why is VAR contacting the ref?
These people should be sat in training weekly, going over multiple scenarios and being asked question, like a theory test for driving.
Until they get them all right regularly they don’t get big games
The caller Chris from Stoke, Got it bang on! Very well said mate! He hit the nail on the head!
The ref, as soon as he is told to go to the screen is instantly feeling like he has to change his mind. It messes with their heads.
Need a ref with the balls to say no mate sticking with my decision
Exactly! They automatically feel they made a mistake.
@@theorgazoid4918it has happened before, thankfully. But just very rarely.
I agree with Danny regarding handballs. Only give penalties if it's deliberate. In vague situations, no penalty should be given.
I think VAR should be used to validate a referee's decision and should have the final say, and not the other way round. It needs to expand to things like corners and throw-ins within a third of the pitch of the opponent's goal.
You are spot on. ‘Clear and obvious error’ seems to have been abandoned, anything that is ambiguous or where you need to examine it with 5000 different angles is clearly ambiguous so how has the referee made a clear and obvious error
Rugby uses VAR perfectly. In that game, it's generally the referee who asks the VAR for specific angles, specific events, specific speeds etc.
In football, the VAR are refereeing from a distance, and can show biased (not consciously necessarily, but still there is room for suspicion) views. The onfield referee is not the one in charge
100%
@21:20 This guy has absolutely nailed it. VAR needs to be used as an additional resource for the ONFIELD Ref to confirm THEIR initial judgment, and they should be allowed to requested the specific angles and relays factoring in speed and distance.. Then only THEY can be held accountable for the decision if it's the wrong one.
The worst thing is the ref looked at it on the monitor and still gave it 😂
That's what I find so weird about VAR. Back in the day we'd give refs the benefit of the doubt given the speed of the game and no replays available. Now they have replays yet make the dumbest decisions..
He barely even looked at the screen he gave it so quickly 😔
It was a penalty because his arm was out

When the on field ref went to watch the replay, he was there for such a short time and got showed hardly any replays, which were slow motioned and paused on the shot of the ball hitting his elbow
A potential solution to VAR that hasn’t been talked about:
Put the onus of the on-field ref to call for a review, rather than have VAR intervene and ask the referee to review something they may have missed - this is what they do in rugby. The ref can pause the game and allow VAR officials the time they need to check all necessary angles.
By having VAR officials ask the on field ref to check a decision, before they even see the incident they head to the monitor assuming they have made an incorrect decision.
If done in reverse, the VAR official can simply review it objectively and provide a decision. Of course, they may still get decisions wrong, but I feel that this would be a better way to implement the technology.
Ref had been excellent until that VAR led issue, they got it completely wrong and the Ref followed them... disappointing
disappointing yes, it also needs questioning
Nah, the ref cut Newcastle some slack, there was a handball call before the penalty that he did not even notice and waved players away. Outstretched arm, it was a clear penalty but he over looked it. The penalty is the correct decision as we saw same decision against Liverpool in the europa league.
Some people say it's a penalty, some people say it's not. It's a subjective call. Take the decision and move on

what is a foul in rugby 🤔🤔
It works in rugby.
There are no offides in rugby, and no handballs. And rugby stops and starts constantly meaning the VAR morons don't feel so pressured to hurry when making decisions. Football is a momentum sport and all about the flow of the game. You're comparing apples and oranges.

Referee let down football last night, thats one of the worst decisions ave seen, Refs should be on a rating system or even sent off !
The United match in the last CL fixture has the same thing TWICE. Both PKs given for handball on both sides were grossly incorrect. This match however is a mind blowing gaff. The ball hit his body then arm from about a few feet. WOW.
Poor Jim. The call was Handball. Just accept it. Isn't that what you said to Arteta. 😂😂😂
Apparently when it's Arteta the rules are different.
The on field decision was no pen hence the call was no pen var and the ref overturned it, in the arsenal game the on field decision was a goal so the ref and var didn't overturn it different situations really
@davidmullins7866 the difference is in how they are talking about it.
Oh
Now who is criticizing the refs? What about letting the refs do their jobs Hun
Y'all are a joke!
Look to the link between psg and uefa,ie who is on the board at uefa and has a big say in psg
And what happened last night, and it's fallout will be the reason why VAR will never change. Why? As fans will care more about a team getting oned upped, after theirs was supposedly, then VAR and such changing in general. I get being biased, But it shows that nothing is gonna change, where you get the decsion or not. Till fans and pundits are all 100% behind something, will it see the light of change, but not now.
Maybe if pundits like Simon kept the same energy fans wouldn't be playing one-upmanship over bad calls. Pundits aren't helping the situation one bit..
"Last April, in their guidelines for the upcoming season, the Uefa board recommended that there should be clarity that no handball offence should be called on a player if the ball is previously deflected from their own body," Hackett said. "But this recommendation was not implemented - and Newcastle paid the price at the Parc des Princes."
It was previously the case but IFAB actually changed that law at the start of the season. Now they're talking about switching it back again. What a farce.

100% VAR has DESTROYED the game. It is UNWATCHABLE. I’m a Middlesbrough fan and I feel sick for what happened to Newcastle last night. I feel so lucky my team plays in the championship away from all this bullshit. I hope VAR never comes down the pyramid.

Miley's handball? It was a very similar situation; it hit his thigh first then ricocheted up and hit his arm. The decision was correct.
Even tho it’s not a pen. The same happened to Reece James against Liverpool and no pundit care so why should fans care when they only promote teams they favor
The English media gotta calm down the over the top reactions. VAR or no VAR, these things happen. I didn’t think it was a pen but it’s borderline. It’s not some gross injustice
Its negligence and the conversation needs to be had because it’s obviously not working. Rugby adapted how it uses the video ref, football should as well. In rugby they talk through the incident whilst referring to the rules. If they did this in this instance they wouldn’t have got it wrong.
@@eddiel7635oh yeah, like the conversation about Arteta complaint after the Newcastle vs Arsenal? Please, give me a break...

I have a SIMPLE solution!
This is for any foul that happens within the box that is not a goalscoring opportunity.
Give an indirect free kick inside the box, similar to the pass back rule.
this would eradicate a harsh 'penalty/punishment' for small non-scoring fouls.
The difference is Uefa is more honest than the FA. The referee in this case has been stood down for making a mistake. But when referees and VAR assistants make Embarrassing decisions as in the case of Arsenal Vs Newcastle United, the FA and the English Mainstream media covers up for them and charges Arteta for speaking truth. Now everyone is using the word "Embarrassing", the exact word Arteta was charged for using.
Use this PSG penalty as a case study for handball, it's bounced off his chest then brushed his arm, surely it should be interpreted as accidental handball and no pen.
Why they try to over complicate things I don't know.
The refs bottled it right at the end but VAR shouldn't have even told him to go and look at it.
they introduced guidance last year that states this type of incident... and didnt follow it for this incident in the game but DID earlier on for another very similar & dismissed it.. work that one out
Like in other sports - managers have 2 challenges/reviews per half. If you get it right, you retain the challenge. VAR is used only in these instances.
Ohhh dear me the ref had a great game until the 96th minute!!!
So when it is Arsenal we shouldn't criticize VAR or the referees, but when it's Newcastle, it's fine? No wonder these clowns are not taken seriously.
I’m sick to death of Var with the match against Fulham the latest and every single match this season Wolves have been screwed over. By all reports we should have at least another 7 points and be further up the table.
ive been sick of it for 3 years & rarely watch a game anymore.. its ruined atmospheres in stadiums, seems to manipulate results more than enhance them now. Referees are now looked down upon as they seem to have no authority anywhere.. overruled by some people in a box somewhere with a mic & somehow see replays different to the rest of us... and they dont always show the best replay properly.. and those lines they used to draw.. hehe.. shambles, and they still dont look right sometimes.. there is questions all over he place when u look at what var does..
I remember someone say to Martin Keown "do u have a problem with respecting authority?" What is this nonsense talking about the refs? They're exposed!
What happened last night was when the ref went to look at the replay he was told from the VAR assistant that he had €100,000 on 1:1 at 4/1 and he woukd split it with him...
Also platini had a brien envelope waiting for them to keep Paris in contention...
That was simply a "let's try to keep Kylian in the Champions League" decision. Had Mbappe been playing for Madrid or whoever that penalty would not have been given. UEFA want to try and keep their golden boy in the Champions League. It's as simple as that...
I also totally believe that var presents the perfect opportunity for such corruption to take place and that this is happening in all of the leagues where it's used, especially CL and EPL.
Danny has the “courage of his convictions” to copy Simon
He's decided to price it into his thinking
can we get the audio from the VAR room for that call?
No point in having var if they've got the option to refer it back to ref. Var can watch incident for as long as they want in calm situation. Ref has limited time with noise and immense pressure on him.
The problem with these clowns is….if this was Arsenal there tone would be completely different….respect the decision and move on 😂😂😂
Arteta in hes room singing, burnaboy e don cast las las, na everybody go chop breakfast😂😂😂
And the offside rule needs to change too ,there has to be a clear space between last defender and attacker for it to be deemed offside.
Tough call. Beyond that, getting a ton of former players is not the best call as we see their punditry consistently and the takes they give hourly can be seriously suspect at times.
To quote Jordan, it happens to everyone just get on with it!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤡
Shocking decision against Newcastle last night. Referee should have stood bye his original desicion.
Its called karma for cheating in the Arsenal game hahahahahahahaa
I can't stand by and let you misspell "stand byE" sorry....:)
The decision was outrageous, but at the same time I think back to when I played football as a youngster and watched football in years gone by. There was simply not this constant debate over whether a call was valid or not.
Goal line technology 100% Var absolutely not.
VAR is a tool, and if used correctly, a very accurate tool. If VAR operatives, and referees don't use it properly, then let us focus on the real issue which is quite simply the officials are either inept or do not understand the laws of the game. Either way, the VAR operatives and officials are not "fit for purpose"! There is another, rather worrying possibility - CORRUPTION! Sadly, I suspect the later might have some merit.
Trust the Brits to cry when it affects them and raise arms when it’s in their favor. Simon definitely benefit in some way from PGMOL, when they mess up, he has an eloquent closing argument but when an English team is affected in Europe, he basically just rephrases what Danny was saying and dance around the topic.
That last caller made a very sensible point about VAR to be an instrument of validation from the referee, not VAR calling on the referee to get validation. I think that's the solution right there from Chris, a Stoke fan.
Bunch of hypocrites on Talksports debating about the Ref & VAR because it's in Europe & impacted an English team, cry more! As for NUFC & Howe, what goes around, comes around, respect the Refs
I feel no sympathy for Newcastle as an Arsenal fan. What goes around comes around.
So weird 😂
The decision again Arsenal was correct. How many refs have been stood down since that decision? Get over it lol
Arsenal fans biggest victims in the world. So embarrassing
The ball hadn't crossed the line, it's already been proved
@@user-iz5kb9zn6e It was a foul on Gabriel. Joelinton had 2 hands on Gabriel's back & shoved him to the floor.
It's a subjective call... At least that is what we heard when it was about Arsenal. Trust the Referee
Exactly
Yeah but the rule is you need conclusive evidence to go against the on field decision.
Absolutely correct. Stonewall pen in my view.
So now he has a problem with refs, and yes VAR and refs work together so Simon’s criticisms against the ref is null. It’s like an oil club gets star treatment and gets a ref suspended but if it was Wolves they have to suck it up.
one thought.. it's last minute of the game and a shot on target which should have lead to a corner, although it was unintentional it was a form of obstruction penalty awarded?
After Arsenal, all I can say is what goes around comes around. Enjoy your karma Newcastle
You have a short memory fella. Toon got a pen at the Emirates that VAR overturned because it hit his thigh first. So, which way would you like to call it. Welcome the world of Var muppet
VAR didn’t get it wrong though. It was the correct call with the evidence available.
@Gameovermam well, VAR didn't get this wrong. Handball.
