Unsure about the A-LEVEL grades needed to study Medicine?
Do you want to know about foundation year programmes?
Look no further.
In this episode I will be going through the subjects you should pick at A-Level to have the strongest academic profile to apply to medical school. I will also be issuing advice those that have already pick A-level subjects which might not be currently suitable for medicine.

Can you talk about how scholarship works for international students... BTW THIS VEDIO IS SO HELPFUL.👌
Sorry for the late reply, thought Ild replied to this, I’ll have a read around and let you know
This is what i wanted....thank you for yhe straight forward video
I’m doing A level Biology, Chemistry and Marine Science as a third subject.. I’m really hoping this would be alright though?
Those subject are more than likely alright for medicine. For peace of mind Ild email the admissions team especially for marine science (I suspect most likely there should be no issues)
@@drcharles5626 that would be great honestly if u were to help me inquire in regards on that, will rly appreciate it!!
Thank you very much charles
Thanks for this btw 💖💖
Just saw your video now its really good thank you so much .but i didnt meet up to chemistry in my GCSE grades😥but i did for biology what other subject can i put along with biology and physiology
Hey! Your alevels are what really matter. Some schools will look at GCSEs too but others won’t. Some will focus on the additional entrance exams. Pick your applications strategically plus with good alevels you’ll be okay
Thank you so much
hi i’m going to college next year and along with biology and chemistry i’m torn between doing either RS or politics. i would enjoy politics wayyy more but i’m not sure if it’a a good choice for studying medicine. what would you say?
Since you're doing biology and chemistry along side this third option your okay to pick either, probably best for you to go with politics as you will enjoy it!
Great video
Along with biology and chemistry I would also like to study psychology . I hope this is suitable for med school :)
yeah those subject choices would be more than suitable for medicine school
@@drcharles5626 update: I chose maths over psychology🥲
@@lisasaikia2387 what made you pick maths over psychology
@@ro12350 Hey, I chose maths over psychology because I personally have a strong interest for problem solving and I believe that a level maths has unlocked a further range of analytical skills for me
@@lisasaikia2387 hows alevel maths going now that youve completed year 12? I will stick with psychology even though i was really contemplating maths i dropped out on induction day
I’ve picked biology, chemistry and media studies. Do you think I need to change media studies or will I not be accepted because I picked that :)
Media studies will be accepted, but if you’re second guessing yourself I would email the admissions team of the school you’re interested in
What about chem, bio and sociology
those would be perfect for medicine
can i get into medical school with a levels in biology psychology and sociology
you can but the number of school you can apply to will be less as there was some schools that strictly require chemistry
Chem and biology and geography should be okay, right?
Apologies for the late reply, these are good subject choices
Hi my medical school tutor has said that not taking maths as a third a level puts you at a huge disadvantage and he says I need to take maths even though I know I won’t enjoy it at all, whereas I would enjoy English lit or PE, do you have any advice on what I should do?
Personally I didn’t take maths and actually chose English Lit as one of my subjects. Most of medical school is teaching yourself stuff anyway. I wouldn’t worry. Ild say got for English lit if you enjoy it over maths.
is bio chem and classics considered ok?? great vid btw
Yeah those subjects sound good 🙌🏿
Hi Charles, can RE (Islamic studies 9488 ) accepted as 3 rd A level subject? Does RE considered as general studies? Also can you please mention what A levels are general studies and critical thinking, just to avoid them straight away.
RE a should be fine as a 3rd a level. General studies and Critical thinking are literally the subject tittles for those two individual a-levels. Hope this helps
@@drcharles5626 my bad....I was thinking them as some group of subjects. It's actually for my kiddo. Thanks for your reply
Hi,
I'm planning to take A levels for English, maths, chemistry, and biology. My first question is would not taking A level physics (not taking any physics courses at all in high school) affect my chances of getting into one of the top universities for med school e.g oxford. Also, is A or AS level english needed/preferred to get into a good med school?? More specifically, for my 4th A level subject, would English or Physics be better?
Thanks 🙏
You don't have to take physics and this should not affect your chances into medical school. Key A-levels to have are Chemistry and Biology. Maths or Physics are good additions. English would also work in your favour as it shows you've got good communication skills. I did English, Chemistry, Biology and Economics and was able to apply to any school.
@@drcharles5626 Alright, thanks!
i heard that bio chem and maths are a good choice for cambridge admission is this true? i mean that is maths more preffered?
Hey, because of the age I arrive in the UK my have had much of subject options. So atm I have only 4 option biology, chemistry, maths and psychology. Now I’m thinking to do chemistry, biology and psychology because I think maths will take a toll on me. But now listening to you which do you think will put me in an better position when applying universities... Maths or psychology?? Is should I see if I can do both??
As long as you do biology & chemistry + any other traditional A-level you will be able to apply to most schools
@Dhavii Shakes Hey just a quick q hows psychology a level is it a soft a level did you find it hard or … because i am planning to pick it and have no knowledge of it prior thanks
Would you say Media, alongside biology and chemistry is okay?
I really don't wanna do biology 😕
I wanna do maths, chem, further maths(however I saw Edinburgh needs u to pick between either maths or further maths)
If you don’t do biology you’ll limit the amount of schools you can apply to. Maybe you could ask your college to see if you could study 4 subjects instead of 3 if you’re really keen on doing maths and further maths in addition to the Chem and bio
@@drcharles5626 I will check with them thank you. Do you have any advice on how to deal with content in biology?
I would like to study Chem, Biology and Religious Studies. Is that ok?
yeah those will be good
Hi
Im planning to take maths chemistry and biology in alevels but the problem i.e in some university physics is needed
Most universities in the U.K. only require Chemistry with Biology. For the third it’s usually okay to pick either Maths or physics. That’s usually the general strategy to maximise the amount of unis you can apply to with maximum efficiency.
If you have specific unis in mind I would double check their requirements. If they specifically state they want physics and you want to apply to them, then you can swap the maths for physics. In most cases the advice above usually stands and allows you to apply to where you need to.
Hello I am doing biology , chemistry and design engineering . Is this good ?
Yeah those subject should cover all bases
What about biology chemistry and psychology
Those are perfect
Critical thinking subjects and general studies I do not no which a levels fall into those categories and most unis don't accept them any ideas?
So chemistry is a must, the next most desired is biology. For your third you need either an arts (history or English ect) science (physics), social science ( economics, psychology) or maths. Critical thinking and general studies are considered soft subject and would not be accepted.
do you think math’s psychology and chemistry would work
They are solid subjects. Some medical schools would accept those but biology is usually required. I would keep chemistry and swap one of the other two with biology.
I'm thinking of taking chem bio an PE is that good?
those A-levels should be okay
What about if i did chem , bio and geography for a levels ? Would i still get into med school
yes those are good a-levels
@@drcharles5626 thank youu
Hi, do you think chemistry, maths and psychology would be okay?
These would be okay for some schools (more than enough to fill your ucas slots), however some other schools also require biology
Do u have to memorise all the medicines names
No you don’t have to memorise them. Over time however you pick them up naturally and start to know the common ones. There is a prescribing exam you sit in your final year. It’s a good idea to know as many common medications as possible and their side effects. If you don’t though it’s okay, you have a book called the BNF which has all medicines, what’s they do and doses. Ild just have a quick Google of any medicines you come across that you’ve never seen and over time you’ll pick up a lot without stressing or trying too much.
Bio Chem Phy Math
Bio Chem Phy Physology
Which combination of A levels is more competitive for medicine?
And am I adviced to take only 3 A levels or a 4th one would increase my chance of getting in?
Both would do the job. Ild focus on if you enjoy maths of physiology. After 3 As, the next place to aim is which of those combos could result in an A*AA or higher for you. That would open up oxbridge ect.
@@drcharles5626 Thankyou Dr Charles for your reply.Your videos are so helpful🌹.
for my third choice, i would like to take computer science. Is it good?
I'm also thinking the same thing
Is bio, chem and business ok for medicine school?
yes that would be okay for medicine. To be 100% sure however ild just double check on the websites of the unis you are interested in applying in the course requirements (for business, most likely will be fine though)
The sixth form I’m looking at requires 4 a levels or 3 a levels with core maths and EPQ
If I did bio, chem, philosophy and maths would that look better than if I did bio, chem, philosophy and core maths(alongside EPQ) or does that really matter?
Helpful video btw
The 3 that are more than enough are bio, chemistry and maths, anything else you add to those 3 I would say do it if you will enjoy it as it will be more work than what's needed to get in.
Are you talking about HWSF??
@@chanelasumda7077 sorry what does HWSF stand for?
@@drcharles5626 It's a sixth form, Harris Westminster
@@chanelasumda7077 Your college sounds elite 👏🏿👏🏿
I’m considering to study bio/chemistry and politics. Is maths not compulsory?
No maths isn’t compulsory
Hi! Would history still be an acceptable 3rd option?
Yes history would be a good 3rd choice
Is biology and physics the key to nursing school
At least 2 A Levels in one of the following subjects:
Biology
Chemistry
Physics
Applied Science
Health and Social Care
Psychology
Sociology
Physical Education
*Please note, some universities may specify qualifications in Biology or Chemistry. (Safest to pick biology and chemistry + whatever third alevel from that list or check on specific unis that you want to apply to.
Instead of A Levels, most universities will also accept an Access to Higher Education Diploma. By studying an Access course for nursing instead of A Levels, you will gain a foundation of knowledge, as well as study skills for degree-level learning. Once again double check with the universities you wish to apply to first.
Am I supposed to add any trades course
I would stick to traditional subjects, social sciences and arts
Hi, I what to be a nurse and I really don't know what A levels to pick, any advice?
From my quick research it sounds like you need 3 A-levels with at least one science A-Level from the following: biology, chemistry, physics, applied science, health and social care, psychology, sociology or physical education. Some universities specifically require biology or chemistry. Typical offers for A level grades range from BBC to ABB. You will need to take a closer look at each and every university you will be applying to to make sure you hit their requirements
Hi, I want to do medicine in the future, for my a levels I chose bio, chem and btec enterprise… I just watched ur video saying that it’s better to avoid btecs.. I’m panicking right now. Can I really not go into medicine just because iv chosen a btec as my third option
You’ve got the main two they want. The only way to be 100% sure is emailing the admission teams of the universities you to go to and see if the BTEC would affect you application. Better to have an email with written confirmation that speculate Ild say. I hope this helps. Also there’s always alternative entries if worst comes to worst like foundation year or via transfers from biomedical science degrees in some universities.
@@drcharles5626 so your saying I’d need to do biomed then medicine
Is things don’t work out^
@@sajatelb7572 There’s a range of options you can do. 1. Do 3rd subject they accept during a gap year. 2. Apply via a foundation year if you’re eligible. 3. Do first year on biomed with the intention to switch. Each has their pros and cons.
For now Ild say focus on emailing the university admission teams as there’s no need to stress and think to far ahead if they accept the BTEC. If the time comes and the above needs to be considered - hit me up and I can help you figure out the options best to take tailored to your needs.
@@drcharles5626 ok, thank you so much! I’ll be sure to message you if there’s any problem! Hopefully it’s not a big problems haha.. because I’m not exactly sure about uk. I still don’t know if I wanna go there, as I lm in dubai so I might be studying here, so their requirements may be different (: I’m not sure tho
What about business as a 3rd A level
Business would be fine
Hi! i wanted to ask, do i need to do a 4th AS to do medicine?
In most cases you'll only just need to do 3 A-levels, there might be some schools that might want a 4th AS - i would just double check with each schools requirements
Dr Charles My current sixthform only want us to do 3Alevels, but I was just double checking. thank you so much :)
Can i do medicine with biology, chemistry and phycology??
yes you can!
@@drcharles5626 thank you because physics is too hard for me and i was thinking of changing it and i saw your vid thank you soo much and great vid keep up the grind
@@abubakarahmed6373 chemistry and biology are the must haves I would say and your third choice is within the list of the accepted subjects
@@drcharles5626 yeh thank you and i wanted to ask what kind of doctor are you? Just curious

Will bio chem and philosophy be good for med school
Or would bio chem and economics be better
yeah those should be good for medicine
@@drcharles5626 Thank you!!!

If you have 2 traditional subjects including either chemistry and biology then you should be okay
