At this moment, three hundred million women across the planet are experiencing the same thing: a period. The monthly menstrual cycle that gives rise to the period is a reality that most women on Earth will go through in their lives. But why is this cycle so universal? And what makes it a cycle in the first place? Emma Bryce gives a primer on periods.
Lesson by Emma Bryce, animation by Kozmonot Animation Studio.
It's amazing how isolated I feel on my period even though millions of women are dealing with it at the same time...

I'm a 37 year old guy, and I've had decent sex ed. But this TED-Ed was the best I've had on the menstrual cycle. What a great and simple video that explains such an important process so clearly and quickly.
Totally agree. Very concise and the best I’ve seen so far.

hehehehe very funny n real

Which pain is worst though. Period or childbirth?
ohhh indeed childbirth...it's scientifically classified as the second most hurtful pain after getting burned alive... our dear mothers deserve more than our lives ♥
We all definitely need to learn more about these things.
I heard about this girl (friend of a friend) whose boyfriend got annoyed when she had to deal with her period; he thought she could simply hold it in, like when you need to pee.
It's also a real obstacle to education for girls many places, because they don't have access to sanitary products, so the alternative is to bleed at school. This keeps many at home, also because it's often a taboo subject
Your are so right especially women in third world countries
Bro really thought we can hold period like pee 💀
We get punished for NOT having children, nice one uterus.
Ikr? So rude
@Pixie Dust mmmm I get what you mean. I mean I guess the only way you _could_ see it as a punishment is bc of the pain that comes with it but honestly it’s just a natural thing that occurs that shows that you are going to be able to carry a child
Pixie Dust u probably don’t have painful periods
@Pixie Dust i agree and Infact its for the better as it prevents infections but unfortunately sometimes the pain can be quite unbearable
Like we.are to yung to have kids
If we get pregnant, we suffer
If we don't get pregnant, we suffer
So we suffer either way :)
I'll deal with period than a child. 😁
But you can get a surgery to stop both. :)

i am studyin medicine, and i have read, saw and pretty much lived through some very intruguing and brreathtaking experiences, but the most mind baffling, mesmerizing thing that i have came across is most definetly the menstrual cycle, and to think that women go through this approximately 400-450 times in their life is just out of this world!

I wish they had highlighted how much the pains can really be. It’s redicukous how we are expected to work through that

"You're unique, just like everybody else" - What's wrong with this phase?
+Person it means that it is fine to be different, because everyone else is a bit different. Though that phrase just gives a bit of a negative mood about it.
Haha
There is actually nothing wrong with it though. If everyone has a different set of traits then everyone can be unique. I don't think "being unique" counts as a trait. If it did, only one person could be unique. If any two people were both unique then they would share the trait of being unique and this not be unique.
***** yep, they always lied to you
it's a paradox. If everyone is unique, then they all have a similarity. But, then again, they can still be unique without being the only unique one.

This is a biological process and we don't suffer because WE ARE TOUGH 😎
Nope, they don't! They enjoy fashion more than males (examples: long hair, makeup, jewelry, short clothes, lingerie, wearing heels, body piercings, stripping, threading, waxing, shaving, manicure, pedicure, etc...)!! Their fashion list is just endless, man!!
Girls are taught at an early to care about their appearance and it helps the marketing business sell stuff like expensive jewelry, clothes, make up, etc. They don't pitch stuff like that to boys. Guys could put more effort into the way they look if they were taught to care about it but they aren't. The best you could hope for is a sweet haircut lol
no I will press F for my exams
uterus: I want a baby
me: I'm too young
uterus: so you choose death
The one critique I would make of this video (and so many explanations of the menstrual cycle) is there’s never any mention of the work the uterine muscles do.
It’s not as if a timer goes off in your uterus and your period just falls out. Menstrual cramps feel a lot like the onset of labor pains and there’s a reason for that. It’s the same muscles at work, trying to clear the decks so that the cycle can begin again.
And when one considers that historically doctors told generations of women that cramps were all in their head, I think it only fair to make the facts at least as commonly known now, as that “common knowledge” was once upon a time.
Thank you for this! I had no idea that that's what causes the cramps
Thank God I don't get cramps
Also, not all cycles are 28 days long. Cycles can be a wide range of days (21-35) and it's different for every person.
Random dude: Women are weak
Me: Can you bleed for 8 days straight without dying of bloodloss
Depends.

And pain equal to kidney stones too

TED-ED is so good at teaching people and empowering them at the same time!
Isn't it curious that a woman's average cycle is 28 days similar to moons rotation around the earth? Considering that the mating cycles of many species are based on the position of moon, we women are probably more linked with the moon than we think..

Weird that they talk about variations but very clearly say that the menstrual cycle is 28 days long, and the pictures of different peoples' menstrual cycles also show 28 days for all of them. The variation between different people can actually be quite big, it's usually seen as a normal length cycle if it's anything between 20 and 40 days.
Also, average is actually 29.3 days, recent studies have shown. Why people think 28 days is average is because when studies were done on menstrual cycles back in the day they purposefully only used women whose cycle was 28 days long, because if they used people with the same cycle length it was easier to compare the results between individuals, and they didn't actually know the average cycle length, they picked people with a 28 days cycle because they thought that was average.

What a beautiful presentation, this information is so useful to me as a man, I've been on this planet for nearly 30 years and all I needed was less than 5 minutes to understand such an important issue. Really shows how easy it is to have a huge blind spot in important knowledge.
The 28 day thing is only true for some. Cycles can last up to 42 days.,
Not true. I have had in the past where I didn't get a period for 4 almost 5 months.
@@stephaniejane306 Actually, not having it for more than two months it's medically considered amenorrhea, I suffered that condition, and I'm sure many other women have experienced as well :)

make a video on how to know when do you have ovulation
its different for everyone, the ovulation process, like the period, is unique to each individual. But with a little research you can find the common signs that often come with ovulation. I know mine by heart now.
it comes at the end of the time when your cervical mucus is fluid.
Lovro Musić idk how but I can just tell when I'm in my ovulation time.
But why do period sync up when females live in close proximity within each other for a long time?
+boy638 lol many reasons, it could be due to coincidences, environmental factors, they may have the same diet ect...but i believe it's mostly coincidences
+boy638 Apparently it could have something to do with the hormones released which affect other women, but no one is actually sure.
It's pretty common 'though.
+sadia ali it may be because to be the same as everyone else and not to be the odd one out. i forgot the name of the effect but its like when everyone is clapping for a person, your subconcious is telling you to stand up and clap so ur not different
+FluteGeek09 I think it must be non coincidental. Nothing to back that up really except I went to an all girl's school, and eeeeveryone was in sync. Which, for the record, makes for a magical 3-7 days of wonder and merriment : )
ellensarah It's really interesting actually.
Buuuuuuut, I prefer to be rid of it. Goodbye, uterus. I never liked you anyway.
Few days before period comes, it is Normal to be moody or having a mood swing like a high and low extreme emotions? I totally experience having hormonal mood swing. I don't know if other women experience the same way like me.

It's been my experience that almost every problem has an upside. For instance, I have always felt that my creativity was enhanced during
my period. Wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar.
I agree. I used to hold onto the victim mindset that "women can't catch a break" but then I realized that was exhausting and getting me nowhere. I've found that sometimes I'm super confident on my period which allows me to do things that normally take forever. That doesn't happen every period but more often than not which is nice.
