The drumfill right before the chorus at 2:34 ... It is simple, but played with a precision that is just... wow. And when he lands on the 1 in the next bar... Sweet heaven. Only Simon Phillips can make such a simple thing, just... just listen okay?!
ok!! my favorite characters in one band!! Vocals - Mario Lead guitar - Ironman Keyboard - War machine Rythm guitar - Thor Bass guitar - Gandalf Drums - Shaggy of Scooby Doo Just kidding anyway great song it made me cry
Rodwilliam de Torres Haha, what a great comment! The bassist actually really look like gandalf, Simon Phillips as shaggy lol! While you say the Bassist is Gandalf i would preferably call Simon(The drummer) Bilbo Baggins(Young) instead, he actually looks a little bit like him in this video. But jokes aside this is indeed a great song and Toto is a great band! This is totally one of my alltime favourite songs!
Jeff can never be replaced but I love Simon's ghost notes and the extra little fills he does on the toms. Just adds something to it for me. Such a great band and wonderful performance.
Simmon Phillipa is one fantastic drummer.he always has a new style up his sleeves for Africa, and all the other songs.it seems he improvises as he leads the band in every concert.
What a great live drum sound! nice deep resonating tom shots especially off the gong bass drum. Sounds sooooo good. I love the grove Simone is pulling off.
In this version they used the backing track from studio in the Chorus so it's only lip sync. Live in Poland version they sing the chorus without backing track in chorus
Had forgotten all about them over the years, just tripped over this performance, and I find myself totally awestruck. What a stunning performance! This is what is called artistry! UNBELIEVABLE!
In my opinion - the best concert I've ever seen. Not only the best of Toto, but the best I've ever heared. I really want to know the guy and all team which mixing this conert. All instruments and vocals are perfect sets with others. Awesome.
I don’t know why but...Simon’s mini fills at 2:45 and 4:24...magic! Maybe they even can’t be called fills but they sound soo simple and easy but also soo excellent. Am I the only one?
Problem is that too many people compare him to Porcaro, and he was a one-off. I love Simon Phillips touch, and his ear. He's as good as anyone that's ever picked the sticks up.....
@@kathycandia2203 ok but this is a video where toto is performing their 1982 hit africa, your comments make no sense at all because they dont even relate to the respective video, you are saying things about you great granddaughter that nobody gives a damn about. So just be more open minded towards the content shown in the video I stead of boasting about your granddaughter.
I just love this song.....the way it is performend in this video. If Leland Sklar is not one of the 2 top ( the top in my opinion ) Bass players of all time..... something is wrong with the world !
AWESOME!! This is one of my favorite songs of all time, and this is a great live recording! I played this song through the years in many different club bands, as a guitarist, and as a keyboardist. Toto was a very big musical influence on my own playing and composing style...Peace! 🎼❤️
I’m super late to the party but I recently heard this song for the first time last year while working for Amazon. I’ve been in love ever since. Everything about this song is so good. I would love to be in the crowd hearing them perform this live. 😍😍😍
This is a fantastic version that minimally equals, and maybe surpasses, other superlative live versions (e.g., Paris, 1990). And as much as I have always loved David Paich on this song, this lead singer is even better.
Not to ruin your Gandalf comments but that bassist is Leland Sklar probably one of the best there has ever been. Does a lot of session work and was subbing for Toto's bassist on that tour.
Thank you. Just the fact that I knew it was Leland Sklar while all of these people referenced Dumbledor was making me feel so old! Hey guys, if you don't know who he is, just Google him and give yourself a few hours to read his resume. He's played with everyone and is admired by most true musicians.

I remember analyzing this song when I did an ethnomusicology course at York University in Toronto, Ontario in the mid 1980s.My main focus was on Central Africa and I recall tying in many similarities of this song (repetition, the vocal contrast harmonically between single notes and double notes plus, the marimba/flute sounds and pentatonic scales) with African music I have always timed my serious runs on my walkman so that the end of this song occurs right near the finish line
Definitely the greatest pop song af all time (slightly ahead of "Do You Believe In Love" by Huey Lewis And The News). I have always timed my serious runs on my walkman so that the end of this song occurs right near the finish line. .
@@juangamer6406 The autotune is almost irrelevant. It's the fact that Bobby Kimball hasn't been able to hit those high notes for decades. Lip syncing is actually worse than autotune.....
Legendary Leland Sklar on bass... On more records than you can ever imagine...
the accuracy of the drummer in those hits... amazing!
Yeah it's Simon Phillips
Vocalist/Keyboardist absolutely SMASHED THIS... OUTSTANDING!!!

that drum fill just stop the world for a moment!! and then keep rolling XD

19thW DLC your fornicating awesome sauce my brother. Hakuna matata. Fyi Gandalf can also be ZZ Top
Love this! Lol
The drummer and keyboard player on this version are phenomenal!!
I know Bobby Kimball had his issues and was gone a long time but he is an unbelievable singer and Toto is better when he's there.
I agree with that
He was definitely using playback effects singing live around that time. Totally different compared to earlier years.
Joe is great, but Bobby is irreplaceable. Period
As long as his voice was OK, now poor, Bobby, but still a great one
Jeff can never be replaced but I love Simon's ghost notes and the extra little fills he does on the toms. Just adds something to it for me. Such a great band and wonderful performance.
The Kendalls Simon plays it in his own style so its doesnt sound like he's trying to play like Jeff.
Simon has his own style he loves Jeff and Jeff love Simon drumming
Jeff would always said he loves Simon drumming plus Simon was never one to copy he had his own style
Simon makes it his own.
Simon Philips!!! Excellent job!!!!!!!!
Best of the best on drums, keyboards, bass, guitar....doesn't get any better
One of, if not, the best versions of Africa on UA-cam.
This is the greatest performance ever.. of any song. Tears in my eyes
Really like this singer. He has a very smooth voice and some nice stylistic additions.
Greg phillinganes!! A legend
One of my favourite live performances ever. Can't get enough of it. Love it
Awesome performance! Have always loved this song!
They skill of that keyboardist is admirable.
Not too many people can say that 100% of a song is great (as you just did).
That is why I rate "Africa" as the greatest pop song of all time
Simon Philips is genius, from that sweet stroke on the chinas to the epic ending fill. I can't see Toto without him..
The perfect replacement for the legendary iconic Jeff Porcaro.
Simmon Phillipa is one fantastic drummer.he always has a new style up his sleeves for Africa, and all the other songs.it seems he improvises as he leads the band in every concert.
the drummer is amazing
3:48, the best vocal Bobby Kimball.!
yes... maybe he's out of tune nowadays, but at the time he was amazing. It's delicious hearing that vocals!

Of the vast number of renditions, this one strikes me as the very best. It all came together quit well.
Agreed
So glad I found this, Simon's drumming is top notch and his kit sounds amazing!

Herve Louon Agree
In this version they used the backing track from studio in the Chorus so it's only lip sync. Live in Poland version they sing the chorus without backing track in chorus
It is not auto tune.. It is pre recorded
Simon Phillips...amazing as always:)
