Aloha Stadium was so cool in design. Using technology engineered by NASA, it was designed to have two entire sections split in half and then move, turning the stadium seating into a diamond shape for baseball. Talking to locals, they say contractors "skimming" and going as cheap as possible created the problems. Starting with the cement crumbling underneath the sections that were supposed to move. Just sad to see such a cool idea fall apart because of the actual construction (at least from what I've been told by caretakers of the stadium). Maybe you should do one on stadiums that might be worth saving. In Hawaii I'd say the Natatorium is biggy. With an amazing Olympian filled history, followed by YEARS of being condemned on one of the most famous beaches in the world, Waikiki Beach.

I remember that the Skydome was considered to be one of the best stadiums in baseball when it was built (and the Blue Jays set all-time MLB attendance records for several years after it opened, no doubt aided by their World Series victories in 1992 and 1993) but it doesn't seem to have aged well. In a way, it was the ultimate cookie cutter ballpark, and probably the best of them, but in the end it was still a cookie cutter ballpark.

Skydome is great when it's open, but way too cavernous when closed. It's problem is that it was outdated as soon as it opened. It may be the ultimate multiuse stadium, not a cookie cutter, but that's just because it was the last. And it opened after the multiuse stadiums where being replaced. The idea was good, the execution fell way short

One of the worst things about the Washington football stadium is that it was built by the previous ownership with a large capacity that was supported by their fans. The current ownership has lost so much fan support that they had to remove large sections of seating just to try to make the stadium look more full, which is why it has an odd and ugly appearance. The team has even been without a name for two seasons now. It's like the ownership is trying to lose the rest of the fans they still have.

Rogers Centre/SkyDome in Toronto has many challenges in terms of altering the facility or replacing it with a purpose built stadium. It would be nearly impossible to detach the room and alter the seating like stadiums with modules of grandstands. There is a full luxury hotel attached in the front with entirely different ownership. The land is leased but owned by a federal crown corporation. Rogers wants to tear down the facility, built a baseball stadium and office towers and condos on the space. But the team has played most of the last two seasons out of Toronto due to Covid 19 and it would be difficult to see the team leave for another two years as their crop of young talent is coming in their prime. No suitable alternative exists in Canada. They have talked about building a new stadium on another site, but real estate is really expensive in Toronto and there is little available space for a new downtown stadium. Complicating matters is that the Rogers Centre was built at a cost of $650 million in the late 1980s and much of the funding came from the Ontario provincial government. They operated the stadium at a loss before selling it for less than half of what it cost to build it. It sold twice more eventually to Rogers for about $25 million for the stadium and the hotel sold separately for another $25 million. That's quite the depreciation. The public is very much against providing any funding for a new facility. Rogers says they can't operate the stadium profitably. Both the Argos and Raptors left for new facilities years ago. They don't book nearly as many special events like professional wrestling, concerts or monster trucks rallies as they use to.
When you watch a game in the stadium you can't see anything outside the stadium other than the CN Tower and a few floors of condos. It can be quite cavernous. Walking past the stadium you can't see into the stadium. Inside it's lots of concrete and steel. There isn't much atmosphere around the stadium leading up to game time. Quite the opposite for the Scotiabank Centre just down the road where thousands of fans congregate to watch the Raptors when the team is playing away games. It's further complicated by a recent fight between executive management and the board of directors for the parent company. The chair of the board of directors is also the chair of the Blue Jays and not particularly popular right now.

You nailed all about Santos: Vila Belmiro’s pronunciation is spot on (as a matter of fact, the stadium’s official name is Urbano Caldeira, but it is mostly known by the name of the neighborhood where it is located). And, as a Santos fan, the proposal of demolishing Vila Belmiro is heartbreaking. Santos should explore options in the city (maybe at the harbor zone, but Santos is a geographically small and crammed city, so there is not much room for a new arena), or outside Santos, mainly at São Paulo, a way bigger city and where the majority of Santos fans hail from.
Excellent job by yours in this video.

Several accidents happened in front of us too because of the complete disorganization of the lot and lack of communication between attendants. Just awful. Random note: I think a video on the best baseball stadiums in Latin America could be cool. Thanks for posting!

A key aspect you're missing about Fedex Field is the lack of convenient Metro access (half a mile from the nearest location IIRC), which their former Stadium, RFK had; that's how most fans got to games in fact. Dan Snyder, the team's owner, is responsible for why the stadium looks the way it does now, on top of many other things.

I think you identified the problem when with the Skydome when you said Convertible for football. That's the problem right there. The infrastructure I understand (amenities, Luxury Suites etc) is still quite good. That said it has all the problems that the old concrete dount/cookie cutter stadiums did from the 70/80s when it comes to slight lines which is why they want a purpose built stadium. Still it's an impressive achievement especially considering the time.

I went to QPR's Loftus Road back in 2014, it was extremely run down, the upper tier is horrible and you can hardly stand up because there's no leg room. They've done nothing to the stadium since then. Being on top of the pitch creates a decent atmosphere there though.

The Skydome (Rogers Centre) needs an interior overhaul, not necessarily an entirely new stadium. Other than some of the seats being far from the field, there's nothing really wrong with it.

  • @SkyIon

As a Blue Jays fan, I don't think we need to replace the Rogers Centre at all.
Yes, the outside is dull, but compared to other MLB stadiums, it really isn't that different. The seating capacity at the Rogers Centre is amazing, plus the hotel.
The stadium is in a prime location, beside the CN Tower, Harbourfront and smack in DownTown Toronto. Seats far away from the action is expected in baseball.
We have more than sufficient seating close to the action, and the extra seating in the outfield is just a bonus. There is nowhere else to build a stadium in Toronto. The retractable roof is one of a few on baseball, and replacing the Rogers Centre is going to be extremely expensive.
We also have to remind ourselves that there are many baseball stadiums that are several decades older than ours. This is the first time I have seena stadium that shouldn't be in a video in a long time. The full context of MLB stadiums must be taken into account. Still a great video though.

    • @TPTGopher

The Queens Park Rangers stadium used to have some genius advertising. The roof of a stand was sponsored by airline KLM, who painted a big ad. You could see it when flying into Heathrow. The real genius part wax that when the sponsorship ended, no-one could be bothered to get rid of the ad, so it was still visible (and free) for years. We hired the ground on a Sunday morning once, when it was a plastic pitch. Small dressing rooms, and that was over 30 years ago.

While I'll still have fond memories of Aloha Stadium, yeah that place sadly ended up becoming it's own worst enemy (Using Weathering Steel in a tropical environment with a salty airspace isn't the best idea.) and hopefully, if a new stadium is built there, they'll learn from the mistakes made in OG Aloha Stadium. My only concern for the New Aloha Stadium is if the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet stays with the new stadium (since I met alot of unique items and food and nice people over there.)

The South and South West Stands (the ones with the blue and white striped roofs) have been replaced with a single stand that covers the whole of the south end instead of stopping halfway. Rogers Centre. It's quite different from the cookie cutter stadiums. But when you try to be a baseball stadium, football stadium, basketball arena, concert venue and monster truck venue you make far too many compromises to be very good at any of them. The NFL experiment ended largely to a lack of interest in the Buffalo Bills but also the NFL has stadiums that can seat 80-100,000 for football and offer tailgating space outside the stadiums. You couldn't get nearly that much in this venue (fine for CFL), no tailgating space exists and it wasn't legal in Ontario.

@@archstanton6102 Often it depends on the opponent. For example, pretty much any Yankees road game will attract a lot of Yankee fans regardless of location. Another one I've seen here is that when the Toronto Blue Jays come to Seattle to play the Mariners there were almost always (before COVID border closures) huge numbers of fans that would come down to Seattle from British Columbia to root for the Blue Jays. I worked near T-Mobile Park for several years, and on some days it seemed like half of Downtown Seattle was in Blue Jays jerseys, and the Amtrak trains to and from Vancouver were just completely packed.
Not sure if other teams based near the Canadian border get the same thing (I can imagine the Tigers and Indians/Guardians probably get large numbers of Canadian fans for Blue Jays games as well) but for people in Western Canada the Mariners games are their only chance to see their team in action without flying to Toronto. You also see geographically close rivals, such as the Seattle Sounders FC, Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps FC, and with the Kraken joining the NHL this season they are almost certain to become rivals to the Vancouver Canucks.

It's amazing how small the stadiums/fields are in the UK you would think how much money the teams are losing out on but since they have been around for 100+ years I can see why people might have an emotional connection but in most of the world that is just not a consideration and fans want new facilities which adds to the excitement and with more income of more spectators adds to better results of the teams and higher pay.

Loftus Road is crap (multiple restricted views, 1950's toilet facilities etc) but so is the team that play there. Queens Park Rangers hit the top flight about once every 30 years and don't stay there for long so spending loads of cash on a state of the art stadium for second or third tier club is like buying a top of the range skateboard for a 95 year old with vertigo.

If any professional team wants a stadium then I say let THEM build it. Every time they go the the public for money, grants from the city, and other concessions. They then charge horrible prices to actually watch the game. It is time to make the teams pay for this in entirety.

Oh. My, God. Fedex is the worst. The one time I went (December 2001) my friend and I went to a game and the traffic infrastructure there is soooooo bad, it took my friend and I the better part of 3 1/2 hours just to get on the beltway. And my understanding is that it hasn't improved much since then.
The story behind Fedex is this - the early 90's, the football team was much beloved and were playing at RFK Stadium in the heart of DC. The Stadium had a ton of character but was starting to fall apart. At the same time, you saw this move on the part of NFL teams to get newer shinier stadiums - In some cases this led to some teams up and leaving the cities they had been in for a while (Houston moving to Tennessee, Cleveland moving to Baltimore...) The owner, Jack Kent Cooke, really wanted to work with the city to get a new Stadium (like as in he was willing to pay for the stadium completely by himself, which is almost unheard of these days) but the mayor at the time didn't play along. So Cooke bought this parcel of land outside the District and built the stadium he had wanted. The problem was there was almost no traffic or transportation infrastructure to support the stadium so getting to and from the place was a total cluster fuck. And when Cooke passed away, the team was bought by Daniel Snyder who is an expert in losing friends and alienating people and really hasn't been able to improve things.
As an additional trivia thingy: The Mayor of Washington DC at the time, Sharon Pratt Kelly not only became the mayor who let the Team leave, it was one of the primary reasons she lost her re-election to former Mayor Marion Barry, who had just been released from prison after serving time for corruption, not to mention being arrested in a drug sting with a prostitute, which was caught on tape.

The Turkish Football club "Fatih Karagümrük SK" desperately need a new stadium. If you look it up you see that they play in a pretty neglected and small stadium located in a pretty run down neighborhood and that despite playing in Turkey's top flight. There are 3rd tier league teams in Turkey that play in much better stadiums than them. I've heard that they now actually play in the National team's Olympic stadium because their own stadium doesn't meet Süper Lig specifications
