I'm liking your videos. I am looking at a 2003 sport edition v8 4wd with 140k miles and it is a 1 owner, however it is out of state and a 6 hour drive. My concern is hidden rust b/c it's lived in New Jersey its whole life. In your opinion, are the rust stories worth being crazy concerned about?
Ethan Hunt. It’s hard to believe otherwise when, generally speaking, your head is so far up the Japanese butts. Abused cars are usually what leave you stranded, not the regularly or well maintained ones.
Blackjack Shellac investing in a 4Runner cuz my old XJ tapped out on me, she never once failed me and was easily my favorite mud rig. Her first and final problem became the end of her, RIP old girl, I hope Toyota can give me something close to as good
You forgot to mention the hands-down best underrated feature: those little corner mirrors in the cargo area that let you see straight down to the bumper and parallel park with inches to spare.
4RM sounds like you know that story too well! 😂 You know what they say, Toyotas will always get you home. Or, to the next pharmacy for some antibiotics. 🤣
My early-mid 2000's Ford F-150 was the tits. Black with a matching cap I black tinted also. Bought an air mattress at Walmart one night...perfect fit! That was my summer slam truck. A cop pulled up one time as I was parked behind some store and poked around. He just kept smirking while we tried to put our shoes and stuff back on and the last thing he said after he told us to enjoy our evening was, where'd I get that mattress, and what size was it. He had the same truck lol. I'm assuming it was a twin, but it fit like a glove! I even used it when I worked nights and had a break. A nice nap in the middle of my shift!? Yes please, you got any overtime??
I have a 2006 4R 4.7 V-8 with only 122,000 miles. It is senior driven with never smoke, kids, pets, etc. in the vehicle. I've never waxed it, but the paint job looks as good as new. It has never been wrecked, towed or abused in any way. There has been only one unscheduled repair, a seeping thermostat housing, with 0 down time other than this minor repair. I've spent less than $3,000 over 14 years for the usual stuff: Struts, brakes, rotors, plugs, timing belt, water pump, power steering flush, transmission fluid change and coolant flush when scheduled. Of course there has been the usual gas, oil, tires, & battery. My mechanic states that the vehicle is better and easier to work on than brand new, and lusts after that V-8. I've owned dozens of vehicles, including fleet vehicles, but none has even come close to this thing. I will keep it until one of us dies, and I wouldn't bet against this 4R.
Ha, nearly the same thing for me too. Owned since 118k, now at 160k. Same thing with the repairs, all scheduled besides the thermostat housing. God bless the v8. I would recommend taking the hydro carbon filter out (many how tos online). I dont know if it adds power but the motor sounds and acts happier.
We owned one of these 4th gen and bought it brand new. The smell of the brand new plastic was so strong that it lasted over a year and a half. This was a real smooth riding vehicle and going on long rides is what this 4th gen loves to do. When we traded it in 10 years later the only trouble we had was a relay for the air conditioner. Your black 4th gen looks fantastic thanks for putting this up.
I drive plow trucks in CT USA and we often have to sleep in our cars or wherever during long storms. The front seat fold down feature is so freaking awesome! It turns your car into a big sectional couch of sorts. Also hidden glove compartment is perfect for pistol storage
thought I knew everything about my 4Runner, but I did not know about rolling the rear window back UP ( I always rolled up from the inside), the trash holder, or the fully reclining front seat! thank you, the trash alone is gonna be great for road trips!
Just bought my first at 53 a o3 4 runner 4.7 faded gold on cloth good automatic 305 k runs great 👍 6 k from original owner got a biblical receipt recording !
I've had my 4runner for years and used to sell them as well, never knew about the hidden compartment in the glove box, or the fully reclining passenger seat. Thanks!
I also love being able to program all of my gate/garage door openers into the rear-view mirror console. No more fumbling through the center console. Then there's the fact that the rear area with the back seats folded down flat leaves a footprint that matches a "full size" mattress (except for the wheel wells); a futon mattress fits perfectly for bringing the girl camping, and folds nicely back into the rear section. leaving the back seats for gear and food. ....sorry, I meant beer and food.
You missed one. The top front portion of the center console lid flips foreword for a tray for what ever you want. Also there’s two sun visors. Fold the big one down and turn to the side, then fold out the smaller one.
Also a cool thing is you can leave your headlights on when you shut the 4runner off, and they will remain on for about 30 seconds in case you need light after getting out. In addition, you can double tap the "lock" button on your key fob to turn them off before the 30 seconds is up.
I found that extra glove box second day cleaning and found the original monroney tag in it. My 4runner was originally priced at $56k in 2004. I'm the third owner and it makes me wonder if owner two ever found it?
Nice video!! Although I knew all of these because I read my owner's manual(lol) I thought I'd add a few more if you don't mind. Spare keys, buy a blank with a program chip in it from eBay for approx. 10-15 bucks. You can look up youtube videos on how to program it yourself for free, get the key cut for another 3 to 5 bucks and you have a spare key for under $20. I own a 2005 4Runner and it does not have a switch to turn off traction control. Do yourself a favor and buy the 2006 or newer model so you can turn off traction control when necessary. I own the V6 4.0L which I wanted moreso than the V8 for several reasons; 1) the V6 has a timing chain and the V8 has a belt that needs to be changed 2) the V8 only has minimal amount of horsepower(270) over the V6(245) and gets worse gas mileage. I find the V6 to be very powerful and I run Toyo MTs 255/75/17 for digging in the snow and mud. Doesn't ride bad on pavement. I can program all of my windows to go up or down at the same time. The 2005 model V6 has the easiest oil filter change out in the world and changing your oil with this vehicle takes only minutes, and my 2005 4Runner is a better rig in the mountains for 4x4ing than my 2008 200 series Land Cruiser because it is lighter than the Land Cruiser, has a narrower body and lower center of gravity, and has .2 inches more ground clearance. I've got 200k miles on my 2005 4runner and it's still kicking!!!
you can program all the windows to go down at the same time? i haven't heard of that! gonna have to read into it. i've got an 04 v8 sport edition & the gas mileage does suck. love everything else about it though! 197k miles. bought it at 185k & had to do some normal maintenance on it but runs better than any car i've ever been in.
I bought the 2006 4Runner Sport Edition, new in 2006, in the U.S. garage kept and only drove on the weekends. In 2014 I shipped my 4Runner and moved to Costa Rica, with only 20,000 original miles. From 2014 to 2020, I have only spent about $1,000.00. New tires, New battery, synthetic oil changes and brake work. I have lived and owned vehicles from around the world. The 4Runner is the best purchase I have ever made. Rides like a sedan and truck. In Costa Rica I drive it on beaches and off road throughout Costa Rica. People in Costa Rica consider the 4Runner a luxury vehicle, more so than a BMW or Mercedes. Because of that, 4Runners cost twice as much in Costa Rica, than in the U.S. or Canada!
I have the same year colour and package. You forgot to mention a few. Like the middle console folds forward making a small table. Also the cup holder divider is adjustable right and left to make room for small or large cups.
I recently found one you missed by accident. That separation in the center console, it unfolds out and forwards to make another tray. There’s also a wallet/card slot in front of it while it’s folded up.
hmm burger tray... genius! cant forgot about those blind spot mirrors in the rear pillars.. a simple solution to a old problem.. but without this new radar nonsense
@@SCU3A_S7EVE I think the speakers were only back there if your model came with the "upgraded" JBL Synthesis stereo. Otherwise I think all from 03-09 had mirrors.

My personal favorite are the mirrors on the insides of the D-pillars intended for you to see around your blind spot when parked from looking in the rear view mirror. This was before reversing cameras were mandated.
This video keeps me entertained almost daily when I'm taking a dump at home. I really like the flip up trash bag holder for on the go dumps on road trips. I use the burger holder for a toilet paper holder & it works great! And to think I was going to install a porta potty in the rear seat, Nothing doing now that I found out all these clever Canadian uses & options these Suvs have to offer. Makes me wanna go take a poop right now👍

Not sure if you ever figured it out, but your lock cylinder isn't broken or damaged. I thought the same thing when my key wouldn't turn left or right. Thank you for telling me what these 4runners are, a boat.
I absolutely adore my 4th gen
Great SUV. One of the best made imo. I like the new model, but its not comparable to this gen.
I'm currently in the market for a fun car to take my kids in and these 4runners have tons of cool features that my kids would love. I'm sold on the trash bag holder.
Nice 4thgen 4runner! Love the extremely reliable 4.7v8. I have 2 modified 2nd gen 4runners. One a 4door and one the hard to find 2door. Just picked up a extremely clean 1990 FJ62 Landcruiser with a 5speed manual to add to the collection.
You sir have mastered the UA-cam videos.
I think half of us was taking a dump while watching this but I do own a swapped 95 4Runner best cars ever made
Nice setup on your Runner!!!
Dude that thing is mint! Love the taking a dump at work comment because that is totally me!
Haha the taking a dump comment is the biggest success of this whole channel.
This is quality content! Keep it up man!
I found a gray one and it’s a sport edition love the look
You missed one! :D pause the video at 2:18 look at the center console. That rectangular indentation you see on the side is where it pops up to a tray. It flips from the seam above the center console toward the shifter.
10 secrets !
Haha I thought that one might be too obvious but you're totally right. More burgers!
the "burger tray" also does not have to be pushed down when sliding it back into itself. It folds down automatically.
very neat overland suv/truck. This baby is already a classic, especially the 4.7 V8.
I wasn’t taking a dump at work while watching this but I sure was
Your vid showed up as I have been looking at 4runners and this was VERY entertaining and quite informative.
Can't go wrong with any 4 Runner.
super Lexus and always put likes for the legendary car
This video is dope bro! I got to share some pics and vids of mine! Your vids are awesome I got the V8 04’ 4th gen with 2.0 fox coilovers. I’m running 275/70 bfgoodrich kO2’s. A bunch of other things but I love my truck, good to see you have such a good example!
Thanks for the kind words homie
@Heywood Jablowme Sweet, now you can add "Cringe" to your list of poser words.
I don't have a 4 runner but was certainly entertained 😆. Thanks for the giggles.
I love my 04 SR5. Now I i could get the 4low to engage. Dang city driver first owners!

Good video. Now we're waiting for part 2.
What would be in part 2?
The middle console extends at the fold
I used to love my folding seats for a nap in the winter on my midnight lunch brake. 45 min naps where awesome!!! kept me going till 4am shift change.
Thanks for the Octane validation.
I didnt know about the compartment in the glove box. I got mine used and opened it up after watching the video and found a gun in it...
Merica! LOL
@@CanadianGearhead
Lol
Thats cool.. whats the gun?
Lol that's where I keep my gun when I'm running
You said “this” perfectly. I immediately thought of Doug
My heart says i really want one but my bank account says OH HELL NO 😥
The newest gens are crazy expensive, but you can get a good early 2000's 4runner for around 5-7k average. :) They're just as handy!
I feel the same
Why not finance on one? That's what I'm gonna do :')
Got my 03 v8 2wd for 2600$ in Texask with 250k miles still runs strong 💪🏼
"I guess if you wanna eat pizza back here you're out of luck boy! Burgers only!" LOL
You must know when our poop cycles are 😂😂😂
That intro was awesome and made me stay for the whole video. 👍
Nice. I’m taking that dump at home watching. Thanks
Hope it all goes well for you
Canadian Gearhead haha. Nothing like a good squatty potty. Lol
Canadian Gearhead all seriousness, great content.
Thanks man
scott petrie same here 😂
Great vid, looking for a 4 runner like this. 🤟
How did he know I was taking a dump 😦😂
Bravo sir on the video! Did not know about the reclining seats, the secret compartment and ignition. Thank you!
That’s my dream vehicle
You have good taste
A booger tray for you know, little Johnny. Great video I'm in the market for one in the near future.
Thinking of buying your own 4th gen 4runner? Visit the Ultimate 4runner Buyers Guide: canadiangearhead.com/4th-gen-toyota-4runner-buyers-guide/
Going to look a the same truck as yours tomorrow. 265km’s. A bit of concern for timing belt and service records if they exist. Enjoying these videos. Thanks
Yes that is true we have four Toyota just need the suv
Im thinking myself to get one of this 4runners, any year in particular is better or reliable that others? im thinking between 2004 - 2008. Thanks in advance dude, greetings and a happy new years eve from Elkhart IN
Not sure if you ever figured it out, but your lock cylinder isn't broken or damaged. I thought the same thing when my key wouldn't turn left or right. Turns out that you have to click on lock or unlock first. (I believe unlock, but can't remember 100%) But as soon as you do that, the key will turn and roll the window both up and down. ; )
That would become a new way to drive around 😂
Great video don't forget about the center console armrest has a flip feature
I had on o4 sport. I love the grill color and the matching v8 badge. Burgers only.
This is the first Black 4th gen I seen. Looks awesome. Here in Houston they're always white or some type of light blue.
It's actually dark grey. Funny thing is, the guy I bought it from had it listed as black in the ad haha
@@CanadianGearhead haha! Yeah saw the other videos and realized it. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching, bud
I have this car and I love it.
You also lose35 hp running 87 octane and it also corrodes the Vvt Actuator
Maybe only 5 hp and 15 lbs.-ft. at most. Not very noticeable, but still....
Beautiful 4th gen. I just got mine today
my 3rd gen doesn't have any of those.. my biggest complain that no gun stash anywhere.
and i just finished a dump btw
Thanks for sharing LOL
Upgrade to the 4th gen and you can hide a pistol in the glove box.
Dillon Hawkins yep, i see a lot of folks stashing theirs in the tissue box holder as well.
You’re just showing off that pretty truck lol. I did not know about the bed 👍 and Kleenex box holder
