In this video I'm showing 8 fun and awesome songs to play that make use of odd time signatures.
Okay; I CLEARLY (thanks..) missed out on a few songs. This asks for pt. 2.
Soundgarden - any song
Rush - YYZ
Tool - Lateralus
SOAD - Question
Zappa
Take 5
and...?!
You should check out Danish Guitar player Mikkel Nordsø, just type in Mikkel Nord and listen to the song guitar me it's in 5/4 (most of the time) or fire to my telephone which is in 6/4. Also there is a very cool part in Extreme Cupid's Dead where bass and guitar play a rif in 7/8 and the drums play 4/4 ontop
Paul Davids Not very guitarry, but Eagle Tax by Mogwai is a very good example as the drums follow the time signature changes in a way that make it easy to see what's going on even by a layman.
Zep's Kashmir always bugged me - - it's 4/4, and 6/4 and 3/4 at the same time.
Nine Inch Nails - March of the Pigs
Isn't Zeppelin's black dog in a funky time signature?
I often play in π/4 by running in circles, but the vomiting can distract from the effect.
joynthis best comment ever.
joynthis Rowsdower!
joynthis hahahahahahahahah 😂😂😂😂
DAMN IT I wanna like this comment but it's at 314
HA best comment ever xD
Gosh, that's an absolutely STUNNING guitar tone.
grungeman86 some guitars' sound and tone can improve throughout time
true. only applies to acoustics, though
The gosh made me chuckle in that place in my heart usually reserved for puppies and kittins.
How?
grungeman86 ikr sexy af
2:07 Tool - Schism
3:06 Radiohead - 15 step
3:36 Pink Floyd - Money
4:19 Porcupine Tree - Open car
4:49 Porcupine Tree - Sound of Muzak
5:12 Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
5:46 Dream Theater - Erotomania
6:32 Led Zeppelin - The Ocean
7:25 KT Tunstall - Silent Sea
Not all heroes wear capes
+10 for Dream Theater 😎😎
Wow! thanks! If only he'd put the names of the songs along with their time signatures in the video. 10/10 helpful.
15 step?
@@ShaharSagi1 I think he got copyright claimed and cut that part out
Nobody:
Prog guitarist: why don't we play in 17/32?
Well there is riff by Tool which is in 29/16 or 58/32. Broken into two bars of 13/16 and 4/4
The song is called Intolerance
love me some prog
ft.animals as leaders
@@Mureirsa ahhhhhh I love animal as leaders too. Danny Carey and Matt Graska are the sole reason I am learing polyrhythms on drums
Beatles "All You Need Is Love"
7 - 7 - 8 - 7
*mind blown*
Holy shit man! I could always feel like something was off with that but I never realised it’s 7/4 and the third bar has an extra beat. You’ve made my life.
Chorus: 4 (6x) - 6 (1x)
i play it a lot and most often we ignore the 7/4 and play it in 4/4... :'c most of the people that play arent very educated in music though...
Paul gilbert did a decent live cover of it that really shows off the technical side of the song for a guitar player! Well worth listening past the shaky start to the solos.
ua-cam.com/video/kcu2gqbu1ys/v-deo.html
AlxndrJG Lennon often thew in an extra bar or two to fit the lyrics
John Myung's heart beats in 13/7
Darrothan comment OTY
Condiment Refraction John Myung doesn't care about the rules
Condiment Refraction unless he was talking about a 13 over 7 polymeter, which i dont think he was
James Scott its not a thing
Actually you can. They are called irrational time signatures and give musicians a big headache.
I’d rate this vid 15/16
17/16
31/16
every dream theater song ever
Fall3n Vandals including every wannabe prog metal band ever
I love how you can say it quite literally with no exaggeration
Every Tool song ever
ryankon518 that’s also a good one
La Fuerza Blading, what about pull me under, another day, panick atack (they are all in 4/4)
15 Step is amazing, it sounds completely natural, you feel like it's just 4/4 or something until you count it out, it's a groove like no other
Sound of Muzak is such a great song! Although to be fair, most of Steven Wilson's work is.
And Tubular Bells brings back so many childhood memories.
Paul you have great tone and clean playing... sounds fantastic!
What time signature are those pants?
hahaha
6 / 8? nah, more like fits great
boywithani this killed me that was so funny
I love them they match his 🎸 colour perfectly
1967
not quite my tempo
Christian Hernandez looooooool Why isn't this a top comment yet?!
V for Vacation because the video is about time signatures, not tempo
loved that movie
I need to watch that movie sometime. Whiplash was one of the tunes my HS jazz ensemble played.
I'M UPSET
I play violin instead of guitar, but I love your video since I’m a composer and enjoy experimenting. I usually have even time signatures, the most I’ve done was 9/8. This is great inspiration, thanks!
Schism is a very fun song to play, but Lateralus has even crazier time signatures and it's not impossible
Lateralus is a blast to play
brntgrbl The vocal melody is structured to mimic the Fibonacci sequence.
brntgrbl - No, I believe the Fibonacci sequence is the syllables in Ænima, although there may be something in Lateralus as well, Tool are pretty good about that lol.
actually the whole song structure, beginning with the drums (oh, Danny Carey) and, more evidently the vocals, is indeed based on the Fibonacci sequence.
grungeman86 How that works? Do they use numbers as time signatures or what?
Love the metronome addition whilst playing... Really helps me understand exactly what you're saying!
Love the videos! Keep up the great work.
I find it interesting that some songs don't particularly feel like they are in odd time signatures, like Money and Silent Sea and indeed famously, Take Five, the time signature is just the result of a fairly natural melodic or rhythmic progression. Whereas other songs seem to be the result of deliberately doing odd time signatures just to be rhythmically unnatural, as with most of the others in this video.
I'm pretty sure ocean is in 8/8 i was counting it
Yes, there's a difference between odd time signatures being deliberately chosen and doing something organic that just happens to be in an odd time signature. It's not uncommon to have those appear in a one or two bars in a structure, like in "The Ocean", where there's a bar of 7 at the end of each riff. But then there's also using a groove that falls into an odd time signature, like "Whipping Post" or "Money".
I tend to not enjoy odd times that feel like a deliberate or unnatural choice.
0:59 "It's as easy as that."
*brain starts smoking*
DUDE!! This is by far, the best video on UA-cam on how to not only count, but differentiate the difference between counting. You did a fantastic job my friend, and I thank you so much for being so clear with your teaching. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of great videos out there on how to clear up time signatures on paper, but nobody seems to have prime examples. You have executed both the logistics and the physical side of time. Thank you so much for putting so much time and effort into this video buddy!!!
Best wiki-page ever: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_musical_works_in_unusual_time_signatures
Play 'em all! :D
Paul Davids maybe in 10 years... i'd be able to play them all
Guitar - Kemper - RME Fireface UCX - Ableton Live - Wav - Video editor - Mp4 - UA-cam - Your Ears.
I'd like to add: between YT and ears there is your PC, soundcard/audio interface/sound software (EQ), with your speakers/headphone, or your iPad/ iPhone and it's earphones. Listening to YT on PC with studio headphones makes a big difference to for example listening on an iPad.
Paul Davids As far as I know the Kemper is a modeling device, so what is it modeled as?
Jesse Lapham , I think the song from Mike Oldfield is the foundation of L's theme but I could be wrong. sounds oddly familiar if you ask me.
nice to see porcupine tree getting some love
You come out with some great stuff, man. Fan of your vids for sure. Keep it up. 👌🏻👍🏻
I was secretly hoping for some PT. I got excited when he played 2 examples
Gavin Harrison does some great odd times but one of my favorite things he does is what he calls "overriding" odd times, to make an odd time sound more natural. Amazing drummer and musician.
"Solisbury Hill" by Peter Gabriel -- it's in 7/4 time, and it's a great tune! Honorable mention should also go to "Spoonman" by Soundgarden (7/4 time), parts of "Limelight" by Rush (7/4 time) and "Take 5" by Dave Brubek (5/4 time).
RJC 72 agreed. That Peter Gabriel tune is the most mainstream song I can think of with such an odd time signature and most people probably wouldn't notice.
What about the Mission Impossible theme?
clever boy. well done sir
The instant before he started playing I thought "it has to be tool"
i realize it's probably more of a joke but Tool has said that schism is in 6.5/8 time.
Travis Parker, so 13/16?
I’m not very theory inclined but is that even possible?? I know I’m asking wayyy late but if someone can explain I don’t want to feel like a dumbass getting trolled lol..but this is the internet 🤦🏻♂️
Hunter Deaton yes it’s possible but it wouldn’t be called that
It would be 13/16
xXCaptainWolfXx01 thank you!
Porcupine Tree, Tool and Dream Theater. Wat else do u need in life??
Abid Hassan Animals as Leaders?
Satvik Sharma Too heavy. I like a nice amalgation between clean and distorted tones
Abid Hassan Sigur Rós
Opeth
Pink Floyd
The way in which your trousers match the colour of your guitar is very satisfying to me.
I enjoy watching your videos when I was in school many other guitar players made fun of me because I would put my pinky on the pick guard when I was hitting single notes I'm glad that you do it also because it showed me that it will never hold me back from my passion THANK YOU
> songs that aren't impossible
> erotomania
+This Guy Apart from the solo ;)
This Guy
The drum part for the intro is hard but not that hard
If you learn how to count it and how to hit crashes with your left hand and than bring it back for the snare than its easy
How can you give a thumb down for this video? This looks like plenty of work and is a very useful video. How can one not appreciate that?
Sandra Sherman they're just jelly
Sandra Sherman Non musical people care less...
Bots
Bc they didn't agree with one of the 8 songs he used most likely
This probably explains why my friend in high school, who was taught guitar and took music theory, always looked at me, self taught and plays by ear, like I s crazy cause I guess I would change time signature in the middle of my playing. I just told him "man idk about all that stuff, I just play". Lol
TheParalytic all music can be written in 4/4, people like your friend are just ocd and insist that every lick be a nice, clean "bar"
TheParalytic as a music major. i too learned guitar by ear and the internet. knowing basicaly your chords, scales and time signatures really helps when writing!
If you're playing solo, it doesn't matter as much (although any musicians in the audience may give you a funny look). If you're attempting to play with other musicians and you randomly skip beats, it is incredibly annoying for whatever other musicians you're trying to playing with.
I play bass and will sometimes jam with others at open mic events in bars, and I thoroughly enjoy it, but if they're playing a song and are going to randomly skip beats I'd just prefer to sit out.
I studied time signatures, but from a songwriting perspective. if you ignore timing and play by feel. you'll get a better song. Up until you start playing with other musicians
+Chip Spangler oh darn
Gave a like simply for starting with Schism :')
Sixadamra i would appreciate it more if he used Lateralus instead of schism.
Don't know why, but this has always been so hard for me to understand. But the way you explained time signatures made PERFECT sense to me. Thanks a lot, man.
By far one of my favorite channels in UA-cam..With yet another great and informative video by Paul Davis, that combines playing skills, musical theory basics and creativity methods.
True talent is when an artist can write a song in a different time signature, and the listener doesn't even know it.
Songs like Metallica's, One, Rush's, Trees, and even the movie, Halloween's theme song, are in 5/4 time signatures. And you barely even notice.
I agree ( alot of 5/4 seems to end up having 3 quarter notes, and 1 half note, and that kinda makes its sound like 4/4, to my ears anyways)
ONE is 6/4 and 4/4
coltsrule5150 Exactly!
The most recent album from The Contortionist, Clairvoyant, hangs out in 5/4 throughout, dabbling in 3/4, 4/4, and others along the way. The feeling it delivers is echoed in the lyrical themes, nausea and release.
look up "ivo papasov and his wedding band on nightmusic" and see if you can keep up. you can count it in 4/4 if you don't listen real hard - so you can dance to it - but i don't think a single part of the song is anywhere near 4/4.
I'm surprised no Soundgarden songs showed up. They do a lot of accessible off-time stuff.
When I read the video's title I immediately thought of "Spoonman", which is in 9/4, isn't it?
black rain,Fell On Black Days, Head down to name a few
I like your Death Cab for Cutie thumbnail. It fits here, since Ben Gibbard's written some songs in 7/4, like State Street Residential and, if I remember correctly, Prove My Hypotheses.
Rhinosaur, Never the Machine Forever, Fresh Tendrils just to name a few.... Gonna miss these guys 😔
THICC CLOUD hey dude if you missed the news matt and kim are goimg to be playing with mc5. I know it's not sg but it's nice to see them still playing. I hope ben does some side projects too
Glad to know you like Porcupine Tree.
I love anesthetize
He didn’t say he liked them just that the riffs of “Open car” and “Sound of Muzak” inspire awe...
(..and possibly not even because they are great riffs in general but because they happen to be standout riffs when judged against other riffs within the much, much more limited category of “odd time signature” riffs).
@J M Which song is a ripoff of which King's X song? I love King's X, but I've never really heard a similarity between these two.
@J M There are similarities, but calling it a ripoff would be a bit of a stretch imo.
@J M Some sililarities in the main riff, but definitely not a rip-off
I started listening to Spaced Out out of Canada. Couldn't figure out the music until now. Crazy time signatures. Thanks for the vid.
Really awesome video!! 👌👌 I found that splitting up the bars in a odd time signature into even smaller groups of 2, 3 or 4 notes (like in your example of "Erotomania" with the red numbers showing the accents of the time signature) makes it easier to feel the rythm of the song! 😉
Feeling "Schism" as 2+3/8 and 2+2+3/8 on the verse, in line with how the riff changes, instead of counting all the beats in each bar, 5/8 and 7/8, makes it feel like it swings between a 6/8-feel and a 4/4-feel!
Same deal on the chorus, 3+3/8 and 2+2+3/8 gives it more of a 6/8-feel but with a little bit of the 4/4-feel in the middle of the riff! 😉
For me, these songs are easier to play when you don't think in time signatures and just play the notes as you hear them
So many self taught musicians don't even know what a note is
PentaMaster I’m a self taught guitarist and I know what a note is and how to read sheet music. And some theory.
1, 2, 3, 4... TOOL !
There's an old SOAD song called Soil. The verses always felt confusing for me.
Allman Brothers - Whipping Post
The Beatles - All You Need Is Love
Dave Brubeck - Take Five
Amon Duul - Archangel Thunderbird
Soundgarden - Spoonman
You have a beautiful, cozy little white radiator behind the acoustic guitar in your room. I'm glad it made to the video.
when you played radiohead and pink floyd i instantly subscribed
Aw, I hoped to see "Spoonman" or "Question!" included. :P
This entire list could be Tool and Soundgarden.
It would be dream theater, but unfortunately it doesn't fit the "not impossible" rule lol
Nice work, first time here and loved your song choices. Some of the greasy depictions of time signature available to the rock world. Odd times that make you close your eyes and feel the groove
I love how this has over 1 million views now. Clearly more people want to play in odd time signatures than I thought. I actually have so much prog on my playlist and like that so many people want to play in odd time signatures now like me.
8:09 ROUNDABOUT!
......wait, oh no
What about Rush, Yes, Genesis?
Love your content homie
And thanks for playing some radiohead
you're FIRED! for not using or mentioning any Frank Zappa!
SPOGGETT not even a hint of King Crimson
Oh man, I love sitting and playing that opening lick to Schism. I didn't even realize it was in odd time signatures like that. It's one of the reasons I love tool. They can work that stuff into their music but still make something you feel like you can bob your head to and rock out.
5/4 -Gorillaz
(Yes thats the song name)
8 best progressive rock and metal songs
Just pick any Rush album with eight songs. :)
Nice Erotomania at the beginning :)
So glad to see Open Car and The Sound of Muzak on this! Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson projects get often overlooked in this kind of stuff.
Money...I was waiting for the part where it drops into 4/4 time for the solo! Dang...great video, particularly liked the Tubular Bells.
At first I misunderstood the video title, I thought it would be about converting existing songs into odd time signatures.
Also I love the choice of bands, go prog rock! :D
So I CAN write a song with a weird time signature!! I felt so useless writing songs that don't fit the norm.
feeling useless by writing music that don't fit the norm?
Chaotic Scorpio; Kate Bush would write songs all the time that would aggrevate the musicians she worked with because of their complexity and weird time signature changes but she would just say that that's what she feels in her heart and that she didn't even think about it while writing the songs at the piano because she would just sense that that would be the music to fit her narratives. As you may know she left a huge mark on contempory music and is often regarded as one of the most extraordinary, unuiqe and authentic songwriters in the Rocklandscape.
All of the best, most respected and most legendary bands and musicians dared to make choices not many people would think of and capitalized on their own sound and style. I would say be open to the advise and guidance of those who have more experience and knowledge than you but don't ever let anyone hold you back from taking a road less traveled that appeals and stands out to you if you want to become truly great!
+Chaotic Scorpio: Sounds like progressive rock might be right for you. With the advent of youtube it's not so underground as it used to be.
dont mistake being off time, and missing beats, and ACCIDENTALLY changing time signatures, as being odd time signatures, try to make it intentional, and see why you built the habits of skipping certain beats, and then do it intentionally, you'll learn so much in doing so.
Dude experimenting with breaking theoretical rules of music is what makes some bands great. Never be afraid to experiment. Take Rush and Led Zeppelin for example
Oddly enough, Erotomania was the first song I was taught on electric guitar :D
sardexX With that crazy neoclassical shredding solo? If yes, good job!
ubomh kijg yes, it took a great amount of time, and thanks
sardexX Big B.!
it almost took half a year to get everything out of that song, but it was a familiar song, I remembered how every part sounded, which is the key to learning any song
Guh uh Huh Damn! I haven't been playing for a year, started playing that solo half a week ago but I can't play it. Matter of fact, I could only handle about half speed. The second solo's relatively easy, but the first one makes no sense so I've already given up on learning it.
This was helpful. I can "hear" when songs have unusual time signatures, but I never knew how to count them out and figure out what the time signature was.
rush - moving pictures
tool - lateralus
dream theater - metropolis part 2
pink floyd - the wall
protest the hero - fortress
any chon album
my best advice for playing in odd time is to listen in odd time. it sounds super weird and awkward at first but once your used to it, start counting! eventually you'll be banging your head in 5/4 without even realizing, thats when you can pick up your instrument and experiment. all these albums are perfect for learning to hear, pick out and count odd time signatures. if your really new to the concept definitely start with rush, because if you dive head first into dream theaters epic "dance of eternity" your gonna be so confused and you'll probably give up when mike portnoy does that first beat after the intro
I'm just gonna say 4 words: KING GIZZARD &the Lizard Wizard!
I had no idea The Ocean had a 7/4 time in it! Ive been drumming to it for years
Yea.. the ocean is in 4/4 for sure.
+Mr. Smiley Technically its just one bar of 7/8, not 7/4. +spurtalisterous if its in 8 and they drop a beat its 7, thats how time signatures work. +Patrick Hlavinka nope!
The main riff trades off 4/4 and 7/8 bars, definitely qualifies for a video featuring songs with odd time signatures. Plus it's really easy to play
For a Zep song I would have picked 'The Crunge' !
i've been playing that song since day 1 lol i juste realised that too
Had it not been on the list I would have recommended it. It's one that people are more familiar with.
I feel sad that there was no Rush songs included :( Awesome video still! :D
the fact that you opened up with Dream Theater before your list really made me smile. good stuff.
Schism is the first song that pops up in my mind any time I hear about odd time signatures :D
I also love it how almost every UA-cam song cover guy failed miserably at their attempts to play Schism and sing it at the same time.
Eny meshuggah song?
Where is radiohead? Some time ago when i watched this video i saw radiohead but not now...
So it wasn't my imagination. I heard Tubular Bells (some sort of orchestra version) every Sunday for more than a month thinking it was in 4/4.
Technically 7+9/8 = 16/8 = 2*(4/4)
I really enjoy all your videos, Paul! Greetings from Argentina
The irony of steve wilson now using telecasters will never be lost on me, this video showed me porcupine tree, and now his main guitar is the same style as the one pauls using
Spoonman?
Take a Friend by Rush in 12/8 time
That is not a weird time signature. Try Everything in its right place by Radiohead in 10/4
12/8 is quite popular, because it's often easier to write something in 12/8 than write shit tone of triplets in 4/4. Weird stuff begin to happen when top number is not equal to 2^k nor (2^k)*3 for any nonnegative integer k.
i knew tool would be on here
sound of muzak is an awesome example because the drumbeat is a combination of two 7/8 beats with a shifted accent on the hi-hat on every second bar which makes it sound like a 7/4
Would be awesome if you did a more in depth lesson in how to count time signature when playing I've always struggled with this
Pretty good video but no rush????? Limelight is the perfect example of a playable song in 7/8
was waiting for YYZ..
"That aren't impossible"
Ryan Sullivan the intro isn't that hard? neither is the rest of the song really. just challenging
Pretty sure the "impossible" was a joke bubs
same
Caleb Hollingsworth your profile pic looks like onision
that amp cord is bothering me so much
Me too ..
It gives a more rounded sound
Dave Matthew's Band's "Before These Crowded Streets" has songs in 5 and 7. One of Carter Beauford's strengths was making odd time signatures sound normal.
Thanks, this adds clarity to why I find it so hard to play drums to some of the things I write on guitar...
radiohead!!!
jordan74 etcetera
That's exactly what I was thinking! 15 Step is my favourite example of an odd time signature
Radiohead!!!!!
Pyramid song has a fun time signature! One of my favs by far! Love radiohead
I never learned how to count so...............PUNKROCK HELL YEAH
Extremely underrated comment
Bro i love your videos but i have to ask - do you even Meshuggah?!
gitsurfer27 meshuggah pretty much always uses 4/4. they just do it better.
Thank you! I'm not a musician, but I like listening to music and learning about music. Because I'm not a musician, I've struggled to differentiate between 3/4 and 6/8, and you just made it really easy to understand even for a layman.
One of my own favorite songs with some time signature tomfoolery is Dance on a Volcano by Genesis. I've seen some drum covers of it on UA-cam.
Also, I never realized how complex the time signature on Tubular Bells is! But now, thinking about it, I can definitely feel that, and kind of want to try counting to the rest of the song.
I'm going to go subscribe and binge my way through your older videos!
Love all these songs, fair play!
tubular bells 💙
Yeah, was hoping it came up :)
Fer T oldfeild finally getting love
Dream Theater is God of Time Signatures
Stravinsky
Liquid tension experiment
7:41 I couldn't have been the only one that thought of Jojo from this.
Paul - your tone/playing on The Ocean is superb!
I love your videos man, you're one hell of an inspiration.. And one hell of a musician! You talk so calmly which adds totally up to your already soothing videos!
Frankz Zappas - Watermelon in Easter Hay
Don't you mean "Keep it greasy"?
Moggio
@@anthonyfarshaw8619 hahaha that weird drum part its gold!
Why did this show up when I searched for CAFO? 😂😂
great video, would of liked to of seen soundgarend tho
Would HAVE liked to HAVE seen. Just because saying "would've" sounds like saying "would of" quickly, does not mean that is what it actually is or how you write it. Please spread the message, too many people seem to have trouble with this.
Piñata Oblongata how do they survive, I wonder.
They're hired by people who also don't know the freakin' difference :/ I see job advertisements with similarly egregious spelling/grammar errors!
Or just appreciate the fact that non native speakers do their best to write in your language ;)
Your error is not due to dyslexia. Tons of people without dyslexia make it every day, so in a way, I suppose that means you shouldn't feel too bad about it. But in another, more accurate way, it'd be great if - now that I've taught you the correct usage - you could stop doing it. It's fairly easy how contractions work; just take away first part of the second word and replace it with an apostrophe. "Would have" = would've, as mentioned. "Can not" = can't. "They did" = they'd. Just say the long form to yourself and you should realise how to write the short form :)
Really loved your guitar tone. You matched it well to each song. Awesome job!
Excellent presentation and execution.
