I'm sitting in a different century and I was scared for the Emperor to read Hai Rui's memorandum. The Emperor doesn't like reading the truth about himself.
I have heard that a ruler is the master of all things and subjects under heaven, and the responsibility is extremely heavy. If anything is not in the interests of the people's benefit or harm, there will be something that does not fulfill its responsibility. If you want to fulfill your responsibility, you can only rely on entrusting your ministers and officials to speak on your behalf. I beg to bare my liver and gallbladder and present it to Your Majesty. In the past, Emperor Wu of Han was a wise ruler. Jia Yi still wept and shed tears as he spoke. This was not because he was being harsh, but because Emperor Wu was benevolent and kind-hearted, and although he had the beauty of loving the people, he still had many lazy and wasteful policies. This was what Jia Yi was most concerned about. Your Majesty's natural talent and decisiveness far surpasses that of Emperor Wu of Han. However, Emperor Wu was able to demonstrate his benevolent and forgiving nature, frugally use and love people, and make the entire world thrive and prosper. Your Majesty, on the other hand, is still young and impulsive, and your whims lead you astray, causing you to mistakenly use your fierce and bright nature. You believe that you can obtain eternal life, and focus solely on practicing the arcane, exhausting the people's resources, recklessly building up infrastructure, and ignoring court affairs and legal systems for over 20 years. Officials have become corrupt and greedy, the people can hardly make a living, and disasters such as floods and droughts occur frequently, with thieves and bandits flourishing. The people under heaven have come to speculate that the change in era name, "Jiajing," means "a time when every household is pure but has no financial resources." Recently, when Yang Song was removed from his position as prime minister, the punishment of the barbarian chieftains was extreme, and the emissaries were pleased, and for a time it was called a clean era. However, after Song's removal, it was only as clean as it was before he became prime minister, and it was not particularly clear and bright, far from the level of Emperor Wu of Han. The people under heaven have not been straightforward with Your Majesty for a long time, and this is known to all the ministers and officials within and without the court. In the past, when a ruler had faults, he relied on his ministers and officials to rectify and help him. Now, however, you have focused on building temples and offering sacrifices, leading the way in burning incense and seeking the Dao, and you have even gone so far as to express the same sentiments as the Daoist immortal, seeking out rare and precious items, and sending emissaries to search for them in all four directions. Your Majesty has made a mistake, and all the ministers have followed suit, with no one speaking honestly on Your Majesty's behalf. The Capital Prefect and other high officials have adopted the style of crying out and begging for mercy, and presented the good and sealed off the evil, but they have not been heard, and are accused of flattery and sycophancy. The situation in the world is dire, and it is all because of Your Majesty's mistakes. I beg Your Majesty to consider the fact that there is still time to correct these mistakes and return to the right path, so that the world can be saved and the people can live in peace and prosperity.
The Han emperor mentioned by Hai Rui was Emperor Wen, not Emperor Wu. Emperor Wu vastly surpassed Emperor Wen in terms of political reform and territorial expansion, but he was also criticized as an extravagant and brutal ruler whose suspicion caused many unnecessary deaths and whose thirst for glory led to heavy taxes and huge losses of manpower and resources in endless wars.
Hundreds perhaps thousands die of starvation, freeze to death and many other diseases nobody cares but write one brilliantly honest review and everybody becomes outraged, what an unjust and unfair world we live in.
Hai Rui was the best !

That light we see is burning in my hall. How far that little candle throws his beams. So dined a good feed in a naughty world

For those who might wonder what got best emperor so annoyed.
Seems rather mild, but I'm no Daoist Lord.
@@Ellesar925 The actual context is much harsher. Hai Rui was basically calling the emperor intellectually impaired.
The Han emperor mentioned by Hai Rui was Emperor Wen, not Emperor Wu.
