  • The END draws near for CITV... After more than 40 years on the airwaves, CITV is still going to be shut down as a traditional TV channel, in favour of the new streaming option, with ITVX Kids.
How will CITV end its final moments? Will there be a special something to mark the moment? Will ITVX Kids be able to live up to the legacy? Join me as we discuss all of that and more!

I don’t know what the solution is but, as a teacher, I do think British children’s TV is so important. We have loads of children in our school that speak with American accents or use Americanisms or vocabulary because they are consuming so much content from the US on Netflix and UA-cam etc.

    • @mseven1361
      @mseven1361 11 місяців тому +10

That's always been the case. In the mid 20th century cowboys were popular as well as Disney movies all with characters with American actors. Some of what is considered British English has changed over time. There was also an invented language called Mid Atlantic English which was a mix of British and American accents to be more easily understood in English speaking countries.
Nickelodeon as part of their marketing also have British English dubs of their animated programmes to help sell programmes to other countries by promoting them as being available in more languages. For example with Paw Patrol it's original "language" which is actually an accent is English Canadian. In the UK it's the English British dub but it is marketed as an additional language and so the programme and the merchandise licences are sold with the emphasis that it is already in multiple countries and languages.

    • @greenhowie
      @greenhowie 11 місяців тому +6

Then there's the opposite "problem" with too many American kids speaking like Peppa Pig - honestly it just shows how insular local media can still be unless it gets a lot of money shoved down it. Kids could be speaking all kinds of pidgin and patois if things were more open, which they should be.

@@chenillesagoe6348 There are many programmes they do this with. Tots TV in America they had American accents and Tilly spoke Spanish. Paw Patrol is Canadian and the names of some of the dogs like Chase and Marshall are names people in north America and Canada have.

I grew up watching British children's TV in the 2000s and I speak with a California accent because of the amount of time I spent watching TV growing up.
I was introduced to UA-cam at the age of 9 but because of all the time I spent watching American shows I'm stuck with a California accent despite the fact that I have never left England.
I do agree that children's TV is important because personally if I have children I wouldn't want them having internet access because of how dangerous the internet could be and I would much rather them watch a TV channel that is 100% dedicated to child friendly programming because if I leave them on a streaming service they could be watching a child friendly thing one minute and some horror movie the next minute if I so much turn my back because streaming services don't have a 9 o'clock water shed I think this is a a terrible and immoral move on ITV's part and I think if they needed to save money they should have shut down ITVbe instead because ITVbe also has a young target audience but the target audience for ITVbe is teenagers and young adults AKA the ones who are actually exclusively using streaming services and don't need their parents permission to do so.

Got some good memories with this channel despite being more of a CBBC kid. The many hours spent watching my favourite shows: Horrid Henry, My Parents are Aliens, Jungle Run, Art Attack, etc. I remember I was even a winner of one of their competitions where I got to design my own ident that got shown lots between 2014 and 2016, lol. That was awesome to see as a kid.
Alas, things change. I'd say it's a shame that kids won't be able to race home like I did to watch their favourite shows, but the figures don't lie, linear TV just doesn't have that influence anymore. Amazing how much it's changed in one decade. Anyhow, I'm at least glad that I got to experience it as part of my childhood, and I'm sure many others agree. Goodbye CITV!

Interesting to hear your reasoning on preferring CBBC, honestly I didn't mind the adverts at the time (that would probably change now lol) but the reason I preferred CBBC was because it felt like they poured a lot more effort into it with the presenters and the CBBC office, and they had a lot more variety of shows, at least when I watched it in the early 10s. I can agree with you about My Parents are Aliens being a banger, honestly I think it still influences my writing these days.

Although, I do believe that CITV's legacy will live on, since there's plenty of continuity clips & episodes of shows available on UA-cam. If I was a parent I would honestly rather my kids watch a dedicated TV channel with programming designed with children in mind, then going on a streaming service where they could go virtually anywhere, They could be watching something fine and child friendly one minute and some kind of true crime documentary or horror the next.
It's a bad time to have children.

A massive part of my childhood CITV was, especially during the late 90s/early 2000s when Stephen Mulhern and Danielle Nicholls were presenting the links in that large blue and yellow studio with all the cardboard cutouts of various characters from the programmes shown, a period that could arguably be considered its peak of popularity. Art Attack, My Parents Are Aliens, Jungle Run, Sooty, Big Bang, How 2, Digimon, Batman Beyond (or Batman of the Future as I knew it), Dexter's Lab, you name it, I watched it. Even after I got Sky, which added Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Fox Kids/Jetix, Disney and Pop to the arsenal, I was always drawn back to CITV (and CBBC, by extension).

    Great Video!
I'd love them to say a proper goodbye but I doubt they will. The last time they had a self indulgent moment was when it when they did the old skool weekend in 2013 (30th birthday). I mean you could make the argument that the decline in viewers was down to the financial cuts and lack of quality and effort from ITV, neglecting their british content. Plus It was the local regions that were producing much of the British content, so as power switched from them to the main ITV, those shows were not really a priority to the main ITV.
Also I'm not sure whether this will be a thing here - but other European countries (mostly in other languages) especially on the radio, are required to air content from within the country of broadcast for cultural reasons. For instance mainstream music on TV and radio is mostly for English speaking audiences and in some countries, the regulators are putting rules in to say a certain amount of music has to be from the country of broadcast, so maybe in time we might have a similar restriction, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Hi Adam, really like your channel and have been following for quite some time now! As a 90s child and being a huge fan of CITV, I’m so sad to see the brand go after 40 years. I fear your prediction is, sadly, going to be absolutely spot on. After the Rubbish World of Dave Spud ends, I think it will be as brutal as programmes no longer available caption appears at exactly 9:00pm, then Sky, Virgin Media etc, will just remove it a few days later.
I would love to see someone like Tommy Boyd or Steve Ryde (the out-of-vision announcer you never saw, who introduced CITV between 1993-1998) do a few seconds sign off, as a little nod to CITV’s past, but I genuinely don’t think (sadly) that will happen. RIP CITV, you will be missed for sure. I was born in the late 80s so grew up in the 90s watching CBBC and CITV when I think childrens TV in the UK was great. I spent a lot of my time outside as a child when not at school, but I managed to somehow cram in a lot of childrens TV too in the 90s and early 2000s. Like yourself, I used to get up very early as a child and watched kids shows that were on. You are right, British UK kids shows used to be great and diverse and not anymore. I loved CBBC and CITV as a child for their original content, not just showing kids shows from outside the UK.
The shows I remember liking that most that were mostly original British shows:
    1. Woof!
    2. Allsorts/Gigglish Allsorts
    3. Wizadora
    4. The Riddlers
    5. The Adventures of Grady Greenspace. This is a show no on I know, knows about when I tell them about it. I remember getting up early and watching this in the early morning. The English dub shown on CITV has since become lost media which I have been searching for years for with no luck finding any episodes other than the original in French and a clip shown in a CITV promo clip.
    6. How 2 - I haven't seen it since it first aired, but I still remember the episode where they talked about the history of false teeth.
    7. Art Attack
    8. Finders Keepers
    9. It's A Mystery
    10. The Big Bang
    11. Mike & Angelo
    12. Spatz
    13. ZZZap!
    14. Tots TV
    15. Rosie and Jim
    16. Sooty and Co.
    17. Bernard's Watch
    18. Children's Ward
    19. Alphabet Castle
    20. Wolves, Witches and Giants
    21. Budgie The Little Helicopter
    22. Slow Norris
    23. My Parents are Aliens
    24. The Magic House
    25. Dr Zitbag's Transylvania Pet Shot
    26. The Raggy Dolls

My favorite era was 1998-2003 when we had Stephen, Danielle and Tom at gas street and the yellow egg like idents. Also the programmes like pump it up, mad for it, top 10, how 2, big bang, art attack, Bernard's watch and my parents. It especially loved the anime it shown such as Pokemon, digimon and cardcaptors. Oh yes and Smtv live with Ant Dec and Cat which was unbeatable on Saturday mornings.
After 2004 I switched to CBBC as I felt citv had lost it's charm it had in the era preceding and CBBC were upping their game

I'll be sad to see it go, as a bit of a compromise why don't they do a programming block on Saturdays or after school on ITV1, I mean, they could do without Tipping Point just so it gives the children whose families can't afford a decent internet connection something to watch without the need for internet. Ah, well, what a way for it to go, celebrating its fortieth birthday and then being killed.

ITV have been trying to end children's programming for years. The problem for them is you can't just axe programmes or genres which are getting high ratings. The way they get around this is they reschedule, defund and get new producers who will change it so much that it will lose viewers. This can be seen in programmes like Gladiators which was rescheduled from Saturday peak time to Sunday, The Bill where they changed the programme to more of an action movie, Top of the Pops where they changed it too much, religious programming where to meet the quotas and lower viewers they had a religious dating documentary and Grange Hill they changed the producer back to Phil Redmond and let him produce it through his Lime Pictures production company in Liverpool.
The statistics of children's programmes losing viewers were misleading because Disney have closed Disney channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior and Sky Cinema Disney and the +1s
TV AM didn't have much about it on ITV because it's not part of ITV in the same way you wouldn't see much about anniversaries of Thames, TVS, TSW and Southern.

    • @mseven1361
      @mseven1361 11 місяців тому

@@DigeeTheGenie So was Grange Hill but I was giving examples of how TV executives purposely cause a programme to lose viewers. With Top of the Pops like Grange Hill they changed the producer who was given too much power to change things but changed them too much. TV people can be bitchy too so they would have done it in a way to sabotage the new producer's career. Had the sabotage back fired the person who allowed the new producer change things would have taken credit. It is possible that the late 1990s in vision CITV was a situation where the sabotage of children's programmes failed and it made it more popular.

The Lorraine show did a thing where they got Anne Diamond on and she and Lorraine talked about their memories of TVAM and showed a couple of short bits of the ident and stuff, but (possibly due to a researchers error?) they did it nowhere near the actually date of the anniversary because they did it in very early January (40th anniversary of the start of the existence of the legal breakfast franchise) rather than mid February (the actual anniversary of the first broadcast of TVAM) so it got missed by most people who would have wanted to see it. I actually watched the whole broadcast on the date of the actual anniversary of the first broadcast and they basically did nothing.

I don’t really think that CiTV really died. It just went back to being only a kids block. I remember that I used to watch Mr. Bean: The Animated Series on CiTV when I was younger, and even during its final years as a channel, I can also recall those times when me and my friends watched three Scooby-Doo shows, such as “Be Cool, Scooby-Doo” “Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?” and the iconic “Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated”. It’s a shame to see it go, but with social media, and even streaming services taking over the media landscape, it’s inevitable, and the same thing goes for CBBC, which is going to close in 2 years, and other children’s channels don’t really have as big of a viewer base as they used to at the time. These channels had a great legacy, and even though the end of children’s television is getting even closer, it’s best to remember the stuff we watched as children that have entertained us, and shaped our viewing experiences for the better.

My 2 concerns with this is, theyll put them all on through the Premium side of the platform like theyve done with The Raccoons and some episodes for a programme might not get uploaded due to PC or other related insensitive stuff, they should just put disclaimers at the start of those specific episodes to warn people and keep them intact

Thames made it for the network. Back then CITV would air serious stuff like this, that didn’t talk down to kids. I'm just hoping PBS can survive, especially with everything going on. I've actually watched a few CITV cartoons doing research on the rise and fall of TV, and my personal favorite is Engie Benjy.
