It’s even better if you can get your hands on one and play for a bit. I had my first experience testing out a hammered dulcimer yesterday and can say that it is THE most beautiful instrument I’ve been honored to play.
It always amazes me how much sound you get out of the instrument: at times like a piano, other times like a harp; always deep and resonant. I originally heard the dulcimer played this way at the Walnut Creek Festival in Winfield, KS and liked it. But I feel like I never REALLY heard it played until I started listening to your recordings. This is one of your best, but they all are wonderful. Thank you, Josh!
I'm from Kansas, and I guess I need to go to the Walnut Creek Festival. I never thought in a million years, I'd run into that event being mentioned by someone in the comments on youtube. I arrived at this video, by seeing someone create a piano, and replacing the piano wires with guitar strings. -- Someone in those comments said, that the correct instrument would be a hammered dulcimer... and here I am. -- This video was beautiful, and it is nice to know that Winfield has some national repute after all this time.
I like how you stated that. I believe the nostalgia is for the universe itself. I think these types of sounds connect to us our distant previous states of existence as we evolved through, and with, the universe. I get the same feeling when I hear this, and other distant types of music. it's a wonderful feeling, I know that. The "On The Turning Away" solo (David Gilmour Pink Floyd) super connects me. That song in general is amazing. Might want to check it out.

I used to go to Mountain Craft Days in late summer every year in Jennerstown, Pennsylvania, and I always remember a hammer dulcimer being played. There were civil war/revolutionary war re-enactments, a maple sugaring shack, the Amish and Mennonites had their lebkuchen, apple cider was being pressed, people selling crafts and pewter figurines, and the sweet smell of wood smoke. The apple dumplings were to die for. But the hammer dulcimer is what I remember the most.

Is this only the dulcimer playing? I struggle to believe that it is just one instrument, it sounds like whole orchestra. Wow. Amazing sound and amazing performance. If I weren´t already playing guitar I would absolutely get hammered dulcimer now. What an incredible instrument with heavenly sound.
I first came across a hammered dulcimer in a small ancient village called Dunster in the South West of England, not far from where I live. That is for sure a beautiful music instrument.
