This is probably thee best and most powerful version of this song.
Is that actually John Weston singing?
This is one of those songs that you don’t want to end.
Greg Lake had, for me, the most beautiful voice in progressive rock with Jon Anderson of Yes. Every time I hear, I cry. Like right now. It's so moving to recall my youth with such a mythical band.
I cry too, those melodies and voices give such emotion. I want to come back to the 80´(Styx, Boston...) with no hesitation!!
Greg Lake pitch-hitting here is amazing!!! As a huge fan of both ELP and Asia it was a shock when I first heard Greg singing lead for Asia in this Era. I got to see Greg in a storyteller tour in a small theater in New Bedford, MA and was so amazed about how humble he was. They filled stadiums! They wrote and recorded some of the most complex progressive music ever written. One thing Greg said at that concert in New Bedford that they wanted the fans to just enjoy music socially to share the experience of ELP in their homes with their families and friends! How honest he was about the current state of how we experience music, alone and here we are this huge concert at the Budokan in Tokyo! People shoulder to shoulder hearing, feeling and experiencing the great catalog of Asia in Asia and with Greg Lake singing lead!
Texto longo........vou esperar virar filme 🎥
I saw ELP in 1971, and King Crimson in 1974, and Greg Lakes voice was awe-inspiring. John Wettons voice was wonderful as well.
To hear these guys sing live and the musicians play live was euphoria.
RIP to both wonderful voices of Greg and John.
Mr. Gregory Stuart Lake Rest In Peace 🎤🎸😢
R.I.P🙏😢
I think Greg did a good job here replicating Wetton's style. I mean consider the fact he only had like a week to learn the songs and all. That is an incredible feat alone imo. Plus, in a way it's only right that Greg should have the gig singing John's parts since John replaced Greg in King Crimson.
Amazing how well-suited Greg Lake was for this...
Greg Lake you are so sadly missed 😢 RIP Greg you were one of a kind and a Pro Rock Pioneer. You’ve been a major idol of mine since 1975 when I was 14.
Carl Palmer's drumming is amazing. Simple on this piece but his timing and pace are impeccable.
Greg and John's voices were so similar and basically interchangeable.. Great they were .
Ummm, no. There’s only one Greg Lake. In a related note did the keyboard player spend the entire show with his back to the audience? How odd. Certainly no Keith Emerson.
I think they were very similar voices. John and Greg were indeed similar...Fripp knew that...why he picked Wetton
Greg Lake was one of my favorite artist. Tremendous talent and one I know I'll miss. Cancer had taken so many others as well. RIP Greg
I realy love this band , Rest in peace Gregory
RIP Greg 🎸🌟
Pure talent.you don’t see that in today’s music
Still sounds fresh over 40 years later. Waaaaaaaaaay ahead of it's time
So true the 80's were the last great decade.
Man, if there was one concert I could go back and see...
Greg does a spectacular job with all these songs, it's remarkable how he sounds like Greg Lake, but doesn't ever lose track of the original vocal concept.
Greg and John both have the same tone
Rare clip of not only Greg Lake performing live with Asia but playing a Steinburger bass.
Definitely the 80’s
- And literally unable to sing the song.
This was a huge mistake, by stupid record management.
@@martindebrois1472 Shove it you tone deaf hack!
@@anthonycatalano5057 You're apparently the deaf one. This concert; in fact this PERFORMANCE was the reason Asia died. It was aired, on MTV a few times and widely regarded as sub-par.
@@martindebrois1472 It was acknowledged by the band themselves that because of the different registers that GL and JW sang in that this was not ideal. I was a bit disappointed hearing this I have to admit. Greg was great in his own environment I think it true to say however. I type this on 31/01/23 which is six years to the day since John died. Too soon as was Greg's death just a couple of months previously if memory serves.
Ooooh what a lucky man, Greg was!!!!
Without a doubt, Greg Lake was a great reference for many other great musicians. RIP
RIP WONDERFUL GREG LAKE !!!!!
I had forgotten Lake had replaced Wetton at a point. Both great voices and great musicians - that band was just loaded with talent, and all in their primes, in my opinion.
Prog Masters of the 70's doing Pop Hits in the 80's - who'd a thought?
Greatest super group ever, its a testament to their professionalism to have that much immense talent together on a stage, super groups are rare because egos get in the way, but these guys were true pros
It somewhat amuses me that decades ago Asia fans despised this concert and routinely denigrated Greg Lake's performance. Now it's wonderful nostalgia. How did this happen?
The famous (and short lived) Greg Lake fronted version of Asia!
👍🏻
Greg lake one the most underrated singers an amazing lineup all masters of their instruments
NOT JUST VOCALISTS, BUT COMPOSERS AND LYRICISTS, WHO HAVE AN IMPRESSIVE CURRICULUM, BECAUSE IT COMES FROM KING CRIMSON, EMERSON LAKE AND PALMER, STRIKING SOLO CAREER AND THERE IN ASIA. THE GUY WAS TOP IN THE HALL OF FAME. CES'T LA VIE IS ONE OF THE MOST PLAYED SONGS IN THE WORLD SINCE THE 70'S. RIP GREG.
What makes you believe he's underrated? Did you travel the globe taking a survey from every citizen of the world? Please explain.
Underrated? You don"t know what you're saying!
Perhaps under appreciated is a better term
Who underrated Greg?
One of the best singer and guitar player ever!!!!
What an awesome song. I fell in love with it the very first time I heard it all those years ago. It never gets old.
I remember when this concert was on MTV, they really hyped it up and we weren't told that John Wetton left the the band until the intro of the show! How lucky were they to get Greg Lake, who sounded like John and played bass! I was a big ELP fan so it wasn't that big of a disappointment to me. So glad they're finally releasing this concert!🤘
Ditto ! So awesome to see the new boxed set for the Asis in Asia Tour! What a kick to see Carl and Greg together again!✌
The best version of this masterpiece!
Brings me back to high school
RIP dear Greg Lake! 😪❤
Steve Howe one of my favorite guitarists of all time
Talented
One of my favorite song on top 10 and I put it number 1!
3:56 the tightness of those accents...pure soul...
WETTON & LAKE ❤❤❤❤
Kind of a bittersweet moment, in that THIS, was the direction that Greg Lake and Carl Palmer wanted to take ELP to, but Keith Emerson was way too resistant to it, and that was one of the elements that led to their demise as a group. Proof of that, was the fact that all of ELP's biggest hits, were ones, where Greg sang. Also, Greg has always thought hat Keith was going off in way too much a "classic music" and keyboard-heavy direction. ELP...could have been, ASIA. Missed opportunities...
The Best Song
Yes amazing
Outstanding version!
In my opinion Wetton and Lake are interchangable, ironically both having their interlude with King Crimson and sounding similar. This version of Asia is 2/3 of ELP, and 2/5 of Yes (at least as far as incarnations of Drama and recent tours). All prime musicians together with a disciplined deliberate (poppish) sound.
Don't forget the keyboard player played for The Buggles who's "Video Killed the Radio Star" was the 1st video aired on MTV.
i dont agree that theyre interchangeable per say, as Wetton had a slightly higher register that helped the chorus in certain songs. But their voices are very similiar and I think if theres anyone who could have filled in for Wetton, it's Lake, and the result ends up being a fantastic concert
Wetton and Lake interchangeable? Wetton could play absolute rings around Lake in the 1970s. His technical proficiency and dexterity was nothing short of staggering. Greg Lake was a fantastic ensemble player with ELP - but Wetton's bass chops were unmatched. As was his voice. With respect, I think your comment is misguided.
@@WolfhandsUA-cam in the 70's perhaps, but he didn't in the 80's. After UK his playing simplified significantly
@@jayceneal5273 Fully aware of his playing in the 80s. It was a different time, and he played to the requirements of the music, not his ego so much - by his own admission.
MARVELOUS ASIA WITH LAKE ON BASS AND VOCALS SOUNDS LIKE WETTON!
Greg lake is awesome. One of my favorite ELP members
Como gostaria de voltar 40 anos!
I was actually at this concert. At the time I was in the Navy and stationed on a ship home ported in Yokosuka, Japan.
i like this version of Asia.
I was 13 or so when this album came out. I thought for years it was Greg Lake singing on the album. Matter of fact, I thought it was Emerson, Lake, Palmer, & Howe 😆 True story
What an incredible incredible line up! Greg Lake did a sensational job as usual. Love Steve Howes guitar playing, always. And I have to add I love John Wetton's version as well. Greg and John had fabulous singing voices. Love ELP and Asia ❤❤❤❤❤😊
Queria ressuscitar essa banda!
I didn't know Greg Lake was in Asia as early as 1983. It was almost an ELP reunion !
Greg was "in" Asia for literally something like 2 weeks... just for this show, and as I recall the story he finally agreed to do this gig about 10 days out, after multiple money offers... until finally getting an offer he couldn't refuse, and then had to absolutely cram to learn all the songs in time for this show. It was a huge deal that MTV had been pushing for months, and they even flew a plane load of fans/contest winners over to Japan for the show, so when Wetton "flaked" out (alcohol issues, I believe) about a month before the show, the pressure to get a replacement and still make the show happen was huge. I was in my early teens and still remember watching it live on MTV, and being blown away at how good Greg was. I do remember hearing news reports of them getting a "new lead singer" in the week or two before this show and wondering WTF was gonna happen. Then Wetton resumed being in Asia shortly after this gig, as I recall.
R.I.P. Mr. Gregory Stuart Lake ❤🌹🎶🎵🎙🎹🌟💓
Só fera braba reunida, tremenda banda, Greg Lake assumindo o vocal/baixo nessa formação, sensacional!!!!👍🏻😀👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Absolutely Fantastic. I remember that Day. Live Broadcast ❤
some serious COWBELL there Carl !!!! love it .... damn this recording is really good
Thanks for putting this up. Outstanding!
Truly one of the greatest live performances ever!
Most epic cowbell ever!!!
Special moment in time,best era.
Greg Lake and John Wetton were very similar bass players. They even sound alike.
Wetton was a more memorable bassist, but Lake was more versatile with acoustic and lead guitar.
John was much more of a true "bass player" whereas Greg was a guitarist who could also play bass. John also was better at improvising whereas Greg composed his bass lines down to a T.
Asia's best video original version. Top 10,my book of 80s.
Classic!!! I remember hearing the stereo simulcast on either KLOS 95.5 or KMET 94.7 here in Los Angeles back December 1983 during the MTV broadcast. 💯💯💯💯
It's virtually impossible to choose my favourite Asia song but if really pushed, I think it would be a toss-up between this one and Sole Survivor.
Sole Survivor and Daylight are like part 1 & part 2 of the same idea, in my opinion. They just go together too well.
Only Time Will Tell and Heat of the Moment are actually confirmed to be part 1 and part 2 of the same idea by John Wetton.
They played mellow but these guys are as talented as Rush on their instruments.
And that’s saying something
Not the drums
@@papaforever3706Lol. Palmer is better than Peart. No contest.
I have listened to this vid at least 20 times! Incredible, only 4 musicians, but these dense wallmof sound.
Thank you "Asia," for the great Music and Videos, but most of all the "Memories," I'll never forget. ❤⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️❤🎵🎶🎸🎙🎤💞🌹🔥🍻🔥
Nice use of the tympani in an actual rock song setting.
Progressive Rock was hanging in there for a moment. John Wetton was in the middle of it. Legend. Much of my favorite KC had him on bass and vocals. Uriah Heep's oddball album H&M enjoyed him kicking ass. And Asia. Great stuff.
Alternativ pop rock
@@user-or7is1tl3p - this tune was made for radio. The entire record was prog rock as a whole.
Das unterstreiche ich😊👍
Thank you, gentlemen, from a long time fan. Purchased the album.
Thank you so much! I knew that Greg Lake had spent a little time in the band , but until now I never heard thing with him. Really good stuff.
Saudades. Parabéns
I love Greg Lake with Asia! Awesome!
i was wishing this in bluray for a long, love in the way is filmed..., palmer is god!, love the end woith the orchestal timpanies...., cant wait for have it in a bluray quality view...., this vid have one of my favs carl,s solos!!!!, the keyboard solo is amazing too, i like greg here too...., wish it will have some xtras..., and can see good the drum kit....
This release should have happened years ago but better late than never!
What a great remix
Seeing Greg Lake and Carl Palmer together makes me want to go listen to Brain Salad Surgery... All we need is Keith Emerson 😂
Intro synt AMAZING
Greg Lake had less than three weeks to rehearse and learn all the songs on this tour. Steve Howe, and John Wetton, had met their end. There was no common ground with keeping ASIA impact. Management asked Carl Palmer to ask if Greg Lake would take the gig in AISA. He did, and ASIA IN ASIA ON MTV, used this concert to promote ASIA in their zenith. However, Greg Lake lasted only during the tour, and he was done. Steve Howe departed, John Wetton came back and told Steve Howe to "Fuck off" and that was the end of ASIA. Once, John Wetton teamed up with Geoff Downs, they found ASIA again. By 1990, ASIA was back only Steve Howe was replaced by the band. ASIA did a massive concert in Russia, and recorded a live album, plus a greatest hit (ASIA Then and Now). It produced a hit with (Days Like This) which did very well in the musical charts. However, ASIA made a move to replace John Wetton with John Payne and record a new album. The John Payne era was around from (1992-1996). Once the original ASIA reformed, it was back to what made them amazing. A tour and a new album were put into the works. ASIA is--John Wetton, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer, and Geoff Downes. I would include John Payne, because he produced five or six ASIA albums.
All seasoned professionals! Victory!
Wow I had forgotten that Greg Lake replaced John Wetton and then the band was half ELP, half Yes.
That was so beautiful on the guitar!... And in the studio cut also!
Love Asia!
GRUPAZO Y TEMAZO 🎹🎹🎹🎸🎸🎸🎧🎧
Never saw this before. Thanks!!
ACA LLEGA EL SENTIMIENTO....
ASIA..... CADA VEZ ME GUSTAN MAS Y ESO QUE LOS ESCUCHO DESDE SUS INICIOS
EN MI ADOLESCENCIA .
REALMENTE UN SUPERGRUPO... .MUSICASOS Y ENCIMA TODA LA ONDA. Y PRESENCIA
Asia in Asia🎎🗾.

Hola.
Preciosa desde que salio allá por el 81. Siempre fue mi favorita.

Asia, Lake & Palmer
❤❤❤❤❤
I remember seeing this videotape at the local rental place, seeing Greg Lake on the box and thinking “what the hell happened to John Wetton?”
I thought the same thing but Lake did a great job being thrown in as a last minute replacement. Understandingly using a teleprompter.
@@brettthebassist I actually had no idea that this concert had taken place until the next summer (1984) when I saw "Asia in Asia" in the "What's new on home video" column in the local paper. Different times for sure.
