One of the highlights of my childhood was sneaking into my parent's room and finding this game in their closet as their Christmas gift to me in 1996. My young 12 year old self wanted this game in the worst way and these tracks really take me back. I'm almost 38 now and still own the game including the cardboard game box!
Awesome story man. Yeah 1996 was a great year. I remember having my genesis console and my little 13inch tv and just being in my room Friday and Saturday nights, hell even all Sunday afternoon just playing videogames. I miss being a kid back in the 90's. There was so much to be excited about.
I agree with Dad72hthorn, the Subway plays much better. I used to like this background sound until I went to the arcade and saw it sounded much better.

@Benjamin Owuye Jagun I'm betting that Matt Furniss would have done the soundtracks to Mortal Kombat 3, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Batman Forever and maybe even Bugs Bunny Double Trouble had he stuck around for the Mega Drive during it's last two years of it's lifespan, but sadly Street Racer in Janurary 1995 was his last game soundtrack on this system before he done a disappearing act and went to work for Psygnosis on the Playstation 1. Probe Software always hired Matt to do the music for their games but in 1995 they started using their own shitty cloned GEMS driver under Andy Brock and that might also explain why MK3 uses GEMS aswell. Matt wasn't available anymore so no more Krisalis and that meant developers had to hire somebody else through GEMS. Think about it.
Surprisingly, this version of the OST holds up better than I thought it would... not bad sound design considering it's not Matt Furniss behind it this time around.
I'm not crazy about it myself but it does have one thing going for it; it's (my opinion) the closest musically to the arcade out of the whole Genesis trilogy. Of course, I like MK2 best precisely because Furniss basically threw out Dan Forden's (great, don't get me wrong) sound design because it just wouldn't have worked on the Genesis and it came out better for it. The Genesis MK3/UMK3 ports are interesting because they are like fuzzy, dithered down versions of the real cabinet. Not technically great, but lots of effort to preserve the game as it was in the arcade and I think that's pretty commendable.
Exactly. That alone is very commendable. If these guys had taken a different, more appropriate approach for the Genesis here, imagine what the results could've been like...
Yeah, it did, and they're similar from a capability standpoint. The 2151 is a bit fancier as a component and the 2612 is basically a consumerized version of it designed to reduce cost. I've never really given the MK1 arcade a serious listen but I do know it's some very familiar FM type sounds.
Mortal Kombat is an awesome game because it is about humans overcoming their human limitations and doing something very difficult, which is saving their world.

Man, the sound chip on the Genesis is just perfect for this game. I don't know how to describe it but the roughness just fits the atmosphere
lol
Midway could've stuck with the YM2151 or the YM2608 and some ADPCM chip
Muchos prefieren la versión de nes, porque la música sonaba con instrumentos más realistas, pero en la génesis, suena más tecno.
Facts Sega always had the best Mortal Kombat music
I love the soul chamber theme in this version!
