    Here we see Steffi, physically diminished, still playing with a terrible knee pain. Unfortunately, she had to put an end to her momentum between 97 and 98 before attempting to return to competition. Otherwise, she certainly could have won at least two or three more Grand Slams during that period.

      Good day,
      I'm sorry if I'm bothering you, please don't own some matches of Jana Novotná from Wimbledon 1998 or Petra Kvitova from Wimbledon 2011. Thank you very much in advance for your answer and above all, I wish you good health. Best regards Dominik :)

      She should have not played the first 6 months of 1997, get that surgery done then and return at Wimbledon or the USO 1997. That way, she could have won more in 1998 and 1999.

      I agree. It's true that Monica probably would have won more Slam without the forced stop for aggression, but also Graf, without the problem to the knee that held firm for 1997-1998 , also certainly would have equaled or surpassed the record Slam of Margaret Court. Why does no one record ever this?

      @@peterphilstacey4698What Steffi did in 1995-99 is one of the greatest achievements in tennis ever.
      In 1995/96 she won 6 of 6 slams and 2 of 2 YECs despite massive injury problems and her dad in prison. And in 1999 she won the FO and made the Wimbledon final even though her doctors had said after her reconstructive knee surgery that the only goal of that surgery had been to make sure that she would be able to walk (!) properly in later years.
      And Selestial azzholes have the GALL to claim that Steffi had it easy peasy in the late 90s. 😬

      @@peterphilstacey4698 Yes, but 1998/99 was not her prime anymore.
      The reconstructive knee surgery took away her speed. Even her stamina in long matches was reduced due to the fact that her knee didn't allow more than 50 % of her previous practice hours anymore.

    I wonder if Steffi knew just how bad her knee was. She'd had a very light schedule that year (only playing a handful of tournaments in the second half of the year) no doubt trying to pace herself.

    I recall reading how some people think that Hingis would've won this match if she hadn't cramped. But IMO, it was a clear sign that she was not capable of playing at that level over a sustainable amount of time. Especially on this surface against someone who's more powerful and faster than she is. Also since Graf's slice backhands stay extra low on this surface. I think it's likely that having to dig up those slice backhands time after time is what made Hingis cramp in this match.

    • @carrerau7138
      @carrerau7138 Рік тому +7

      Never heard or read that someone thought Hingis might have won this. Steffi won 28 points more than Hingis!
      BTW, it was Steffi who was full of pain killers and who constantly tried to cool her bum knee with an ice bag.

      @@carrerau7138 I have. But like I said, as amazing as Hingis played in that fourth set, it was clear that she was playing above her usual level and could not sustain it over a longer time period.

    • @gk891
      @gk891 Рік тому +4

      @@simsonsimanjuntak3745 IMO, the matchups don't really favour Hingis. Hingis was a master at manipulating the ball and placing her shots into all areas of the court. But Graf was such an incredible athlete and mover that it didn't particularly matter. While Hingis could make their matches challenging, more often than not, Graf often came out the victor. It is also very telling that Graf has a winning record against Hingis both before and after Graf's surgeries. Even in that match in Tokyo that Hingis won (1999), Graf was up in the third set before she had to take an injury time out.

      I'm sorry but that is just BS trying to be repectful here. Steffi had this horrible habit of playing a great first set then making errors and losing focus in the second. I have seen her do it many times in my humble opinion she gave that second set to Hingis. So no it was not cramping had Steffi taken that second set. She would have won it in three however to each his own everyone has their opinion. In mine Steffi in three sets Aloha from Hawaii. 😊

    This was the most cordial greeting at the net the two have ever had. I wonder what prompted Hingis to say these negative things about Graf in 1999. The have made up tho since... even playing exhibition matches after Graf's retirement.

    I always thought “Why Steffi, why play the ‘96 year-end championship?”
    IMHO, Steffi won so much in ‘96 (3 slams, etc.) that a well deserved break would have helped her rehab both her recent major knee issue and her ailing back.
    Steffi should have taken time off until the ‘97 Wimbledon at the earliest or even not compete for the entire year. She could have trained end of ‘97 to get ready for ‘98 AO. Her fans may have seen two awesome years with Steffi before her retirement but instead, she had reconstructive knee surgery which took about year to finally come back on tour.
    Well, still happy she won her last slam at ‘99 FO but she may have won more if her team and I dare say Steffi gave herself much needed rest and recuperation.
