  • Discussion and demo of the Source Audio Ventris Dual Reverb. With 12 out of the box reverb types and 12 more available through software, the Ventris is a powerful, great sounding reverb pedal. Lush reverb soundscapes are super easy to create by cascading 2 reverb types at the same time! Also, this pedal is a PERFECT companion for the Source Audio Nemesis Delay!

    Yeah - sorry for all the "cools" in the video. Anyway - the Ventris is really nice. If you are in the market for a reverb, it's definitely worth trying out!!

      Chords Of Orion I understand the ventris is far more advanced, but how would you compare the lushness of the neunaber immerse with this guy?

      @Chords of Orion: I've really enjoyed your channel and I'm a proud owner of all your albums on Bandcamp. I love what you do with the instrument and how you shape your soundscapes. I have a question about this unit. I have been pining for a Strymon Big Sky for years. I have an Eventide H9 and a few of the older Lexicon units (LXP-1, LXP-15, and the MPX-1) as well as a Zoom MS-70CDR the Boss RV-6 and my old Alesis Quadraverb and Boss SE70. I use these in combination and with other delays and effects. What I would like to ask you, as someone who understands the sensation of space created by these different units, does the Ventris Dual Reverb seem to capture the same depth and warmth that the Strymon does? I love the Eventide Space algorithms in the H9, but they seem a bit cold and less organic than the Strymon. I would appreciate any insight that you could offer.
      Thank you for your time and insight.
      Peace.

      I would be curious to know the same thing...
      Have been debating between one high-end reverb, between Strymon BigSky, Eventide Space, Neunaber Immerse, and now this Ventris
      I kind of want some versatility, and each one seems to have strengths and limitations which make it very, very hard to choose:
      Space: I like the customization options and digital readouts of the pot values (for precise dialing up later), and it has some nice tones... but it feels slightly more compressed or constrained or dark than the BigSky (and used by one of my favorite post-prog bands, Explosions in the Sky)
      BigSky: I like the open airiness of the tones, and the customizability like the Space; seems like it has better out-of-box presets than Space. Most of all, its Cloud mode is the most lush, expansive, airy sound I've heard in any of the reverb pedals, and it is a real siren's song for me (also a sound I recognize in some of my favorite artists, like Tycho and Hammock, who both use BigSky in their pedal lineups)
      Immerse: Seemed like a lot of bang for the buck; the standards (plate and hall) seem decent, and I like the Shimmer on this one more than any of the others (plus there are a few bonuses like detune)... but sometimes I want to get some surf rock or rockabilly sounds, and it is not as good for those... its Spring model is pretty weak. Can't go as lush/expansive as the BigSky Cloud mode, either...
      Ventris: I'm really liking the tonal quality -- it seems to have a good balance of constrained/contained, as well as ability to do more open/bright lush/airy sounds. The Spring model on this is also better than any of the above, from what I have heard. And, of course, you can combine two reverb effect DSPs, which also sets it apart! I'm just wondering if it can go as "wide open" expansive/lush as the BigSky (somebody said it could copy Cloud, but I have not yet seen this anywhere in a video; if so, then Ventris is my winner) or even Immerse. [This one is also $100 cheaper than BigSky and Space, but $100 more than Immerse, which makes the decision even tougher]
      So, in short... I'd love to have some more opinions or "priorities" by some of these ambient artists I trust on UA-cam, as well! (They do good demos, but I wish they would sort of "rank" them somewhere, rather than saying "This sounds nice... so does this... and so does this")
      Did you end up deciding on one? If so, what did you get, and are you happy with it?

      Chords Of Orion what and amazing pedal. I love your demo of the different effects. Such a powerful tool! The stereo out with certain effects sounds like this reverb pedal is kind of... a reverb/rotary/delay/tremolo all in one. I could listen to you all day in meditation, mellowing my heart rate out.

      I bought the ventris on the strength of this brilliant video. I absolutely love it! I do have two questions.... maybe Bill/Source Audio or someone can help... I like to use an expression pedal with my effects wherever possible - and on the Ventris I would want to assign an expression pedal globally (for every preset and engine) to control the mix knob wet/dry mix.... I cant see this as an option in the desktop editor.. it would seem a lot of hassle/duplication to set it up individually for every single preset I save. Does anyone know if this is an option in the hardware global settings? Same applies to the press/hold function on the option switch... I would like the hold function to be latched on a global setting .... Any way to do this?

    Best demo I’ve watched on the Ventris! I just ordered one...one day delivery too! This is the “coolest” reverb I have ever heard! You know just what to play to show it off too. At first I thought you were running effects in before the Ventris, until I realized this is all Ventris! I am considering buying the Nemesis also in the future, but this actually has delay and modulation which is very nice! This just sounds right to me. Thanks Bill.

    Hi Bill, me again. You remember I sold my BigSky, and now I have the Ventris. I LOVE IT! The controls and user interface are, in my opinion, extremely friendly and easy to quickly grab a great sound. No "deep diving" for parameters. What kills me is the "dual reverb", particularly in parallel. Not easy to get parallel reverbs in the pedal world and I think those sounds on the Ventris are unique and very musical. This pedal is 100% useful; no extraneous, weird, bizarre sounds. Plus the two DSP engines produce crystal, wonderful tone. Haven't dived into the software; may never need to. Thanks for demo-ing this!

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  6 років тому

      Glad you are liking the Ventris. It's a great reverb for sure!

    • @BillKeilt
      @BillKeilt 6 років тому +1

      Yes, I like it more than the BigSky: not because it is "better", because the BigSky has fantastic, wonderful sounds. But I really like the user interface a lot more; no searching for parameters deep down. What you see on the dials is what you get. Plus the dual reverb (parallel) is really a wonderful tool. And I find all the engines are really great sounding. I do miss the "Bloom" and "Choral" engines from the BigSky. I find the sounds of the Ventris are every bit as gorgeous as the BigSky, but that is for my ears only; I'm not saying this sound is better than that sound. Plus the Ventris has the software that can be used to dial in different sounds, and makes it "upgrade-able" for future. Works similarly as the SA Nemesis, which also has 12 factory engines on the pedal, but through the software you can access 14 additional engines, and replace them onto the Nemesis if you want. That provides down-the-road new sounds. So, yeah, I am much happier with it than the BigSky.

    • @jat5am
      @jat5am 5 років тому

      You've mentioned «Bloom» and «Choral», but where's the cloud? Does Ventris can produce cloud-ish sound? Lashing and long-decayed. Thanks.

  • @BillKeilt
    @BillKeilt 6 років тому

    Thanks for showing us this new product (haven't seen it!).... first off, at your first play-through (Modverb at 3:44), the ping-pong, stereo effect is unreal. Very cool. All these reverbs are really nice, useful. I'm impressed with Source Audio; I have the Nemesis and love it. P.S. always love your playing, regardless of pedal..... P.P.S. I returned my Line 6 Helix. That's a whole other story. P.P.S. I don't have a "reverse reverb" on my BigSky or Immerse; that sounded really cool (useful too).

    • @sourceaudioeffects
      @sourceaudioeffects 6 років тому +3

      Yeah, Bill's Modverb clip is sweet. The Modverb engine actually has two modes. When you move the CONTROL 1 knob (which controls modulation depth) to the right of 12 o'clock the tremolo effect is applied to the dry and the wet signal simultaneously. When the CONTROL 1 knob is set to the left of 12 o'clock the tremolo is applied to the dry signal only which then feeds into the reverb, just as you would find in vintage Fender amps.

    Such a great pedal I got mine about 2 weeks ago. Will say though for potential buyers your amp makes a massive difference. I have a boss katana for practice while I’m at college and a tone master twin reverb back home, and it sounds night and day better on the twin. Almost sounds bad on the katana to be honest. Would sell if I didn’t know how spectacular it really was on the twin, yes even a digital twin. Thankfully I am graduating in May and will sell my katana then! The pedal was worth the extra money. Can’t wait to pair it with a nemesis here within the next year! Thanks for your great demos

      Chords Of Orion absolutely, the longer you play the more you realize that all your gear, while separate parts, add together to make one whole unit. Each component will summate into the whole. Therefore each matters a lot! Thanks again Bill!

      We spent an enormous amount of time on the Shimmer effect. That is a very challenging sound. It's way too easy to create an algorithm that is harsh and out of tune - Bob and Jesse (the Source Audio engineers) put weeks and weeks into creating a Shimmer sound that was warm and musical with a robust blooming effect. We're super proud of how the Shimmer effect turned out on the Ventris. And Bill's clip really showcases the effect beautifully.

    Great Video! To my great astonishment, after I tested the Ventris, I found out that the "Ext.Midi Clock Sync" function described in the manual is not provided by Source Audio. I think that's a major shortcoming and would like to ask you to write also to Source Audio in order to achieve a speedy firmware update that implements the Midi Sync feature!
    The Nemensis Delay has this feature! So both devices would complement each other completely.
    Thanks a lot and greetings!

    Love the VENTRIS just getting into it 1 st night and it has my fav reverb sounds so far from any pedal. I own HOF V.1 which will always be on my live board and I enjoyed the EQD Avalanche run through pedal genie earlier this month. This VENTRIS reverb is def on its own level. Great demo, I particularly like the larger reverbs that the Ventris does. Chords of Orion, how does the Ventris compare to the Boss RV-500? I was looking to upgrade my reverb (I currently am using the line 6 verbzilla) and I haven't seen any videos comparing the RV-500 to the ventris.

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  6 років тому +1

      I recently did a comparison of the Hall reverb engine using several reverbs, and the Ventris and RV-500 were 2 of the units: ua-cam.com/video/nD_77bytxC8/v-deo.html. Let me know what you think! I do like the RV-500 quite a bit. Tons of features, and it included the ability to run multiple reverb types together ALONG with delay!, Like all BOSS pedals, it has a BOSS round. The Ventris has a Source Audio sound. Strymon Big Sky has a Strymon sound. They are all good - the question is which do you prefer?

    No way could I afford this pedal outright. I had to exploit my relationships at my local music store to make it more affordable. Definitely worth the depletion of that capital. Now I just need to go back and purchase the SourceAudio whip and chair to try and tame the beast.

    Nice sounds but I'd have liked to hear it with a "normal" guitar and into a mono amp, the usual setup of a guitarist.

      As someone who loves stereo effects, I come here specifically to hear the stereo demonstration of pedals before I buy them. There are lots of pedal demos on youtube, but Bill's channel is one of the few places to consistently hear stereo pedals demonstrated to their full potential. In that way, I feel that Bill provides demonstrations for an underserved niche and he would be remiss to switch to mono. You can always go watch another demo to hear the pedal in mono (if it's a popular enough pedal) but those of us who love stereo come to Bill to hear stereo. Furthermore, if you aren't interested in stereo, there are probably more cost-effective mono pedals worth considering than stereo pedals like this one. So while I can't disagree with your point of view and I understand that many people don't use stereo rigs for a variety of reasons, I have to voice my protestation to your comment because I hope that Bill doesn't heed your advice and keeps making the content that I love.
      And in terms of him using a baritone guitar instead of a "normal" guitar, recall that a baritone guitar only extends the range of a guitar down 5 half steps - so most of Bill's playing in this video could have been demonstrated identically on a traditional guitar by sliding down a few frets. Only a handful of notes here and there actually take advantage of the extended low range. The baritone guitar has tonal differences from a traditional guitar, but all guitars have tonal differences between each other. So there's no perfectly representative demo guitar. And for some of us, like myself, who own baritone guitars or even the 277, this is the representative guitar.
      Lastly - I didn't always own a stereo rig or a 277. But I stumbled upon Bill's channel about a year ago and he inspired me to pursue it. It has really invigorated my guitar playing and given me another musical avenue to explore. Having someone who's willing to challenge your assumptions about how guitar is supposed to be played or can be played is be very valuable to some of us, even if it isn't something that everyone wants to put the energy or dosh into pursuing.
      So while Bill could have done this demo in mono on a strat or a Les Paul and perhaps have been able to provide a representative example to a broader audience, he would be both neglecting his existing audience (self-selected lovers of stereo and baritone guitar) and losing aspects that make his content unique compared to the slew of pedal demos from other youtubers. I don't think that's a tradeoff worth making.
      Bill - if you're reading this, please keep up the good work :)

      Maybe it's the most common setup but that's just a massive shame! Reverb and delay should ALWAYS be stereo for full effect.
