I truly believe that the line...'Does anyone know where the love of God goes' is probably the saddest & the most poignant & realistic line in country/folk/rock music!!! It makes me cry every time even after all the years!!!! This was probably the MOST played song on the radio when it came out!!!! Love Gordon's music still!!!!

Most moving line...'Does anyone know where the love of God goes'..... When Gordon passed, they rang that bell 30 times.

Such a tragedy. From it comes this iconic song. Folks will be researching the sinking for years anytime they are introduced to this song. The music is perfectly captivating. It grabs you and makes you want to hear the rest of the song. They were making about 15kts so they were an hour out. They were being followed yet the Anderson never saw anything after reporting Fitz drop off the radar. Several ships including the Anderson went back out to search and found nothing till the next day. So tragic.

A short story on the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. A massive storm was predicted to go south of Lake Superior, but turned north after the Edward Fitzgerald set sail. The Fitz was joined by another laker (what the Great Lakes freighters are called) travelling the same direction, the Arthur M Anderson. They were caught in the open by waves up to 50 ft and winds gusting up to 90 mph, and were making a run for shelter at Whitefish Bay. The Fitz lost her electronics and the Anderson used hers to assist with navigation. The captain of the Fitz reported that they had developed a list but that the pumps were working. The last contact came when the Anderson radio man asked how they were doing and the skipper replied, "We are holding our own". The next time the Anderson checked on the Fitz, there was no response and she had disappeared from the radar. The Anderson reported the Fitzgerald missing and reached shelter at Whitefish Bay. The Coast Guard was swamped by emergency calls and requested that the Anderson go back out and look for survivors. The captain was hesitant, the Anderson had taken a beating herself, but put the question to the crew. Overwhelmingly, they voted to go. So the Anderson led a search for survivors. All that was found were the remains of a lifeboat and other debris. Nobody knows exactly what happened to cause the Fitz to sink because there was no distress call. The second laker, the Arthur M Anderson is still sailing the lakes, hauling cargo, keeping alive the memory of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

This was not only the first take, this was the first time that the musicians had EVER played it. It was the first run through so they could get comfortable with the music. They went back and listened to it and none of the subsequent takes were better so they went with the first one.

This was to be the captain’s last voyage. He was going to retire after this trip.

I think it was the same for the Titanics captain. If I remember it correctly he was going to retire after that trip. So sad that the captains never got to enjoy their retirement.

Gordon did an earlier song about a shipwreck, and no one has reacted to it, "The Ballad of Yarmouth Castle", you could be the first.

Thank you so much Penny for this brilliant request. Everyone knows I'm a big Gord fan and this is one of his finest. I delighted that Don finally found a way to avoid the youtube blockers and get his one on the air! Thanks Don for the super reaction!

The Mariners' Church in Detroit (the "Maritime Sailors' Cathedral" mentioned in "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald") honored Lightfoot the day after his death by ringing its bell a total of 30 times, 29 for each of the crewmen lost on the Edmund Fitzgerald, and the final time for Lightfoot himself.

Lightfoot developed a relationship of over four decades with the families of the sailors who lost their lives that night, making himself available for significant events and charity requests whenever he could.
And, of course, he donated all royalties generated by the song to those same families.

I just read the other day that each year they ring the bell 29 times but since Gordon Lightfoot died they now ring the bell 30 times.

The line that always gets me is "Fellas, it's been good to know ya".... The cook knew they were doomed and was content with his fate, saying his goodbyes before going down.
Depending on when you reacted the first time, Gordon may have passed away since. When he died, the cathedral rang their bell 30 times in his honor.
If you'd like to hear another amazing Canadian folk/country singer, I would ask that you do Fred Eaglesmith -- "Wilder Than Her". Lyrics are brilliant. ua-cam.com/video/OsDL7GIn1uw/v-deo.html

Normally when a body sinks bacteria will eat it and as a result it will rise to the surface. Lake Superior has areas so deep and cold that bacteria can't thrive. There are no bacteria to eat the bodies so they stay underwater. Thus Lake Superior never gives up its dead.

Hi Don, I'm so happy you finally got this reaction successfully uploaded. I knew you'd tried several times. It is an anthem from one of my favorites, Gordon Lightfoot. Just listened to this last week. I close my eyes when I listen, and he takes me there with the men on the E.F. Great song, request, and reaction. Thanks #sis (Penny). Thanks Don. A 10 indeed.

@carolinasbeauty Hi Phyllis, just messaging you here because I already reacted to and uploaded Joyce Paul's song--it's scheduled for Sept. 15. I also have Jo Ann Campbell's “(I’m the Girl from) Wolverton Mountain" scheduled the previous day, so I did two reactions to responses! Email me another choice whenever you have a moment. No rush, just wanted to bring the good news to you. :-)

Funny. I'm pretty sure that my world has brushed against the world of your subscriber Penny. I've thought before that her name is familiar when you've mentioned it, but now that you mention she's from Minnesota and now lives in Arizona, I'm pretty sure that we worked for the same Minnesota company that was bought out by a company that moved some of the people from our office to their Arizona offices. I worked 2nd shift in the IT department, and I would often park in her parking garage spot, or in one on either side of hers after the daytime folks went home for the day. Small world, if I'm right.

November 9 to 11/1913 a similar early November storm sank 39 ships and killed 230 sailors from Deleuth all the way to Buffalo. Do not disrespect the Great Lakes they are deadlier than the Bermuda Triangle.

The late, great Canadian folk singer, Stan Rogers, recorded "White Squall" - a poignant tune about the peril of the Great Lakes. Highly recommend!

Got something for you to check out. Not 100% sure you would do it on the channel but it's the new Van Zant song Jesus Christ. It is southern rock doing gospel.
