But on the Parkinson interview this quote was mentioned to Bing by David Parkinson and he was apparently quoting Sinatra. Believe me I am a huge huge fan of Bing Crosby's and I have heard the quote a fair few times and referencing Bing to Frank and vice versa. I know Sinatra idolised Bing and Bing was very generous of his praise to Frank during the interview whilst considerably down playing his own very amazing talents.
Bing was such a game changer. Sure, I think somebody would've eventually come along that had the same effect, but Bing really used technology to his advantage. Let amplification do all the work, and created a singing style that was more intimate than the theatre filling belters of ages prior. I love both singers so much, but you've really got to take your hat off for Crosby, because the man changed singing.
"Don't dig that kind of crooning, son." "You must be one of the newer fellas." Great lines, and tells you just how far they were apart when it came to their singing styles. I can also imagine that line getting a laugh at the theatre considering the ones that were singing it.
Bing Crosby was the crooner in the 1930's with the teenagers, then the next generation Frank Sinatra in the 1940's then the 1950's with Elvis, the 1960's the Beatles, the 1990's boy band like In Sync, Boys to Men, New kids on the block, etc. Groups, singers may change but still the same of teenagers going crazy for those songs, bands, groups or singers.
Your Mum was a real music lover.......I hope that YOU follow in her footsteps. This was and perhaps, still is, One of the best musicals to ever be put on screen.
Sinatra was technically a crooner in the beginning of his career, singing mainly for the big orchestras, but as time went by, he became more like a "singer", a huge interpreter. All you have to do is just compare his earlier version of Ol' Man River to his other one some years later to see the difference
@@NotHarpoGroucho then why did he reference himself as one at 2:05? "Don't dig that kind of crooning chum" and Bing says "You must be one of the newer ones."
Billy Bauer told me a story years ago about a fan who approached Zoot Sims after a performance to ask the same question. His answer, "easy, I practice drunk."
True, he was that good, especially as a comedian, but he lacked the drive to be the best and Sinatra, best or not, was possessed by it. He didn't begin to relinquish control of his career until the late '60's. Dean would stroll in off the golf course, sing over prerecorded tracks and waltz right back out there. This year is his centennial. Heard anything? I haven't.
This was pure genius. These were so far apart in their 'styles' of that time but they merge perfectly, the old and the new, and even take the piss out of each other. Superb
I can still remember my father almost falling out of his chair with laughter in the movie house when Frank sang the line, "She got pinched in the 'Ass-tor' bar."
FRANK SINATRA AND BING CROSBY! Wow! This was a rare duet of two musical giants, in the film "High Society." I watch it with amazement. Frank and Bing were so magically great together, that it's a moment in time captured for our joy. We won't see two such great and classy singers performing magically together for a long time, if ever!
This is Hollywood when it was at its best. A great story taken from The Philadelphia Story, combined with a marvelous Cole Porter score, none better, then add to it the talent of Crosby, Sinatra, and Grace Kelly and you have a really great movie. The Porter song True Love from this film was nominated for an Oscar, only to lose to, either When you wish Upon a Star, or. Que Sera, can't remember exactly. Just goes to show you what was coming out when there was talent. Crosby and Sinatra are great together on screen.
And don't forget to give a little credit to director Chuck Walters who knew just how to stage such a piece as this. He later said -- as is well known -- that Sinatra did not like to rehearse. So he (Walters) would do the Sinatra part while rehearsing with Bing. Sinatra then watched Walters run through it with Bing and picked up some bits of business that he used when it came time to film it. Both actor/singers picked up some things from Walters, the dance master. For example, that little bit toward the end as they exit the library the second time -- where they're dancing their little jigs. Then in unison, they step on their back foot, lean backwards and kick out their front legs. That was classic Chuck Walters
My dear late dad had this wonderful song on 78 record. I used to listen to it on a tiny Dansette record player when I was a little boy. It takes me straight back there every time. Miss you dad.
The best song in a musical ever. A joy to be alive and love hearing this piece. We will never see the likes of these men, their performances that music ever again. We were blessed to have them.
I'm 16 and doing a project for school on the 40s-50s, and I thought I would go here to listen to some songs from the era to get a feel for it, and now I'm hooked. There's just something simple, sophisticated, and easy going about that time that I can't find anywhere nowadays.
Two GIANT talents performing together in 1956... And Louie Armstrong thrown into the mix as well. What a historic year in entertainment 1956 turned out being!
They just don't make movies or music like this anymore. I'm only 19 and I appreciate all the songs and musicals from that time. I like we lost something somewhere.
Absolutely delightful number--witty song by the incomparable Cole Porter sung by Bing and Frank at their finest. I first saw this in 'That's entertainment' when it played at my college and it brought down the house. Thanks for posting!!
That film also introduced me to this marvelous number. My parents took me to see "That's Entertainment" (I was 14 at the time) and I've been in love with musicals ever since.
the first time I saw it, it was at the movie theater. My mom took us to see it. I was very young about 5 or 6 yrs old. Remember the joke where Frank says, "don't dig that kind of croonin' chum" & Bing says "you must be one of the newer fellas"? The first time I heard it, I didn't understand that joke but as I got older, I did. 🤣
The original scene from THE PHILADEPHIA STORY is a glorious exchange between Cary Grant & Jimmy Stewart at their youthful peak but you have to love this musical version...Crosby & Sinatra are patently having a blast & they liked each other immensely in real life which comes over. The 'Don't dig that kind of crooning chum..' line absolutely slays me...!
FRANK SINATRA AND BING CROSBY! This is a timeless piece! These two singers/actors/entertainers were the best of the best! We are lucky to have this preserved on UA-cam. In my humble opinion I doubt we will see such great talent for a very very long time -- sadly! And let me add -- I LOVE this performance!
This is right up there on my list of favorite Crosby songs. I adore the way he sings "next July we collide with Mars" - THAT TIMBRE! Sorry for all the Frank fans, but I've always thought this song put the Crosby vs Sinatra debate to bed (with Bing as the undisputed winner). What makes me sad is that I feel my generation remembers Frank, but not Bing (except at Christmas).
One of the shining gems of the Hollywood Musical - two master performers at the height of perfection allied with a great melody and witty lyrics. Sublime !
I always ask my dad if Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra ever sang a duet together. He soon showed me this video and I got so happy. I was giddy like a small child.

FRANK SINATRA + BING CROSBY! This video is a piece of American History! Frank and Bing sang this in the movie "High Society," in the late 1950's. It is a fantastic duet, capturing these two great American singers, in their prime! America! Enjoy this! It is a rare Great Performance! Two Iconic Singers! I find this song to be great fun!
This duet is soo amazing, todays wanna-be film musicals just don't have that kind of talent. It's so sad that we will never have such distinguished stars

Duelling crooners! Two legendary artists, with Cole Porter lyrics and brilliant timing. Add a line like "you must be one of the newer fellers" and you have one terrific number. Bravo!
I have seen that chair in so many movies. It might seem trivial, but as a designer I pay attention to set decor. Love ❤️ this MOVIE. LOVE YOU for letting us see these.❤❤
It's interesting that I just finished watching a show about Frank Sinatra life on tv, some say this was he's best acting work. Apparently it's the only time Frank and Bing sang together and Bing was Sinatra favourite singers. I always thought this movie belongs to Grace Kelly which is why I found the comments interesting because they are right Frank and Bing both shine in the movie too.
Oh my, aren't they simply the best? Starting the day with Frank Sinatra en Bing Crosby singing this song my day is absolutely okay. And thanks to Cole Porter this song and the other songs in High Society are timeless in my opinion.
One of my all-time favorite movie moments. It really doesn't get much better than this, especially if you know who these 2 guys are. Priceless!!! And never gets old.
Olivia Culbertson see I never got that. Bing had more record and movie ticket sales, yet frank had more net worth. I do know that net worth does not equal fame
'Did You Evah' : I like the way Frank 'jumps' when Bing says, "Say, you must be one of the newer fellas..." Small points : have you ever been able to put a champagne cork back in the bottle? They must have shaved it down..... Also : at about 2 mins 40, as they come back to the bar, the cork is in the bottle, then as Frank pours, no cork....doesn't matter, they were totally competent..... Love it. R.M. England.
I hope they had as much as fun as it looks like they did. I understand that the producers were worried about egos on this film. It didn't show. Great performances by all and Grace was at her all time most beautiful. Add Satch and there is not much else you could want.
man frank sinatra is such a good singer, dancer/ tapp dancer i love this man soooooo much i wish he was still alive he is soooooo handsome i have to see his pictures and listen to his music like 10 times a day.......got to get my fix:)
The best of Hollywood, during the best time of Hollywood, with some of the best entertainers of all time. Blending acting, tap dancing, and singing with a complete orchestra boasting the biggest of sounds -all while Gene Kelly was sick as ever with the flu. But, especially true in Hollywood, time is money, and the studio needed to film the scene. Gene Kelly’s absolute mastery of dance and acting mask any signs of his condition- a true professional.
"A singer like Frank Sinatra comes along once in a lifetime - Why did it have to be mine?" - Bing Crosby.
Didn't Frank say the same thing about Bing?
Wodger Dog Bing was famous long before Frank, he wouldn't have said that. Not to mention he was his idol

I dunno I love them both! Sinatra himself adored Bing and credited him for inventing the entire idea of being a "crooner".

Agreed 😍❤️
You know what's better? Crosby and Louis Armstrong in the same room.
Carlos Angel
sounds like heaven
Carlos Angel
Not to be too vulgar... but I think I just orgasmed!
it happenee though
Nobody even knows how blessed we are that we have Crosby and Sinatra to watch easily like this on youtube. Love you guys !❤
I know! Such talent is non-existent today.
One of the peak moments of the Hollywood golden era.
"Don't dig that kind of crooning, son."
"You must be one of the newer fellas."
Great lines, and tells you just how far they were apart when it came to their singing styles. I can also imagine that line getting a laugh at the theatre considering the ones that were singing it.
I love moments like that where it seems like the actors talking to each other, not the characters.
I laughed when Frank jumps after Bings comment. 🤣🤣
Supposedly, Bing ad-libbed that line and Frank's reaction was somewhat real.
This has to be the coolest thing the history of ever. It's a coolness singularity.
***** Only thing of equal coolness is Evidence by Faith No More.

I agree!
***** Totally agree Archer 100% I love both of the guys here
+Lew Archer 1949 they ooze class
+Mark Walker they should teach this in History class for high schoolers :D to show them who's boss!
Frank Sinatra: the only person that can successfully tap dance drunk.
Check out Fred Astaire in "The Sky's the Limit".
Look up Donald O Conners balloon dance
I can do too 😂... I did already with 2 bottles of Whisky intus

Crosby said this was the best duet he evah did, and he did probably more duets
than any major pop artist. No argument here ...
two absolute legends
Welp. You took the words out of my mouth!
Totally agree
If Marx listens to this song, he will go full Bourgeois on his own mouthful words of wisdom and write "The Forbes richest people Manifesto". Lol.
Two of my favourite crooners. No matter how old you are they're combined vocals are powerful and incredible!

How does Frank Sinatra sing so greatly while still sounding so drunk.
Billy Bauer told me a story years ago about a fan who approached Zoot Sims after a performance to ask the same question. His answer, "easy, I practice drunk."
Watch him perform on the Dinah Shore Show , as he and Dinah duet he puffs away on a cigarette and sings like it's no big deal!
It's like watching Astaire dance, Ali torment an opponent or Mays catch a fly ball - effortless, the one true sign of a pro.

They both looked like they were having so much fun doing this!
LOVE YOU for letting us see these.❤❤
😊
I LOVE that chair!
yeh its quite a famous chair! im pretty sure its currently in a museum rn
They also sang together in the movie called Robin and the 7 Hoods.
Indeed, Robin 'n the Seven Hoods, and many TV shows.
They had many times they sang together. Robin and the 7 hoods, their christmas special and many others.
I have this on my ipod, and I just love to act out to it
Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame (not on iPod, but the acting part is 100% me)
Alexandria Sundstrom Lol, I have it in the iPhone since I finally decided to start putting songs on there
It’s still fun to act out
FRANK SINATRA AND BING CROSBY: TWO GREAT TALENTS!! These two singers and actors had timeless appeal and could sing and act wonderfully!
Wow what a different time that was. I'm glad I found this 😍
frank singing with his boyhood idol..
The idol he surpassed
Johnny Nicholas both are in the top 5 singers ever, but frank didn't surpass Bing. Bing still has more ticket and record sales over his career
Mikey Condry Bing did surpass him in record sales but Sinatra's net worth is double what Crosby's is.
Olivia Culbertson see I never got that. Bing had more record and movie ticket sales, yet frank had more net worth. I do know that net worth does not equal fame
Olivia Culbertson and Frank had the Bobby Soxers.
Hats off to the casting director for this pairing
'Did You Evah' : I like the way Frank 'jumps' when Bing says, "Say, you must be one of the newer fellas..."
Small points : have you ever been able to put a champagne cork back in the bottle? They must have shaved it down.....
Also : at about 2 mins 40, as they come back to the bar, the cork is in the bottle, then as Frank pours, no cork....doesn't matter, they were totally competent..... Love it. R.M. England.
It's a special cork you use instead of the actual cork. You could and of course can still buy it.
a tap dancing frank.. :)
cutest scene evah!!
Two of the most important and legendary entertainers of all time. Remember, Bing Crosby has sold more records than any singer!
Amo esse filme ❤
I hope they had as much as fun as it looks like they did. I understand that the producers were worried about egos on this film. It didn't show. Great performances by all and Grace was at her all time most beautiful. Add Satch and there is not much else you could want.
Love that song. Pretty good movie too. Makes want to watch it again, and then Robin and the 7 hoods
My favourite scene from the whole movie! 'Have you heard? It's in the stars'.... and 2:37 makes me laugh out loud, every time! Great team.
I loved this movie when I was little: Million Dollar Movie, Channel 9 NY
Bing Crosby-Mr. Smooth
Frank Sinantra-Nuff Said!
Together-Priceless!
You can tell that Sinatra was genuinely THRILLED to be singing alongside Crosby!
no doubt he took crosbys style like everyone else did then until he got a style of his own he admired crosby so much at first he wanted to be him
Bing is effortless...and frank is really trying
Im 22-Absolute fan of Bing Crosby-still number 1 in my book!
man frank sinatra is such a good singer, dancer/ tapp dancer i love this man soooooo much i wish he was still alive he is soooooo handsome i have to see his pictures and listen to his music like 10 times a day.......got to get my fix:)
Two legends. It was fun to see them sing together.
3:14 Crosbys moves are fire here 🤣🤣
Crosby is most popular for his singing but he could dance pretty well too and had some moves
@ frrr
23 people have obviously never been to a swell party...
Jim Petrey uncultured swines they are
they don't dig this kind of crooning
fpp , they must be some of the newer fella’s
Omg, you guys are so fun. Using the lyrics to dis those who don't understand. "They're beautiful" (By they're, I mean you're)
This was the age of great talent! Not the crappy trite of today.
Food for the soul in 2022 - Two of the very best singers and entertainers the world will ever see.
Sadly missed
Thank God for You Tube
That's exactly my music taste till now & my childhood song 'BING CROWBY ' back to 2009 when I was only 10 yrs old . Miss old days 😢
Whether singing or talking, Bing's voice was smooth, melodic and enticing beyond belief 😍
