Tip for the beeswax: It will be a pain to clean all the beeswax out of your coffee grinder or food processor. With small quantities especially, you can easily grate it by hand. Lightly coat your grater with olive oil on both sides to prevent sticking. (I make a lot of herbal salves.)

I don't know if this works on beeswax, exactly. When I want to get a candle out of a container, or those little pop-in things under a warmer container, I put them in the freezer (after room temperature). Leave it in there for a couple of hours. After that the candle or candle square just comes right out. No mess, no fuss.

i usually just put everything into a pan of hot water and let the heat do the cleaning

I made these. They worked great for the first few weeks. After the first month they became crusty and the wax started to come off. I only rinsed them under cold water and patted them dry when cleaning. We bought wax wraps from the grocery store before we decided to make our own and 8 months later they’re are in perfect condition. The name brand wraps are not made with just wax though. They included oil and sap which is why I think they have lasted so long. The oil and sap help the wax remain flexible and keep it from flaking off. I found another tutorial that included Jojoba oil and palm sap. I think we’ll give that a try next.

If your beeswax wraps start to dry out and crinkle a bit, just reheat them in the oven, or grate a bit more wax onto them and reheat. They're very resilient. The addition of oil and sap often makes the wraps not as responsive to hand heat warmth for molding, and they can be too sticky from the sap.

@@AstarsPlace , new subbie here. Omgosh i love this idea! By the way, You can just put wax in a glass pyrex and melt it over double boiler and just pour the wax onto your fabric.
Didn't know that about beeswax but it makes sense because honey and propolis are both antimicrobial so why not beeswax? I wonder if that's one reason people used to use wax to seal their homemade preserves.
You could also use a hair dryer to melt the wax by hand or melt bees wax and dip the linen into it; both ideas would remove havi g to use tin foil.
hair dryer would blow a lot of dust on it, I wouldn't recommend that. What would work is covering it with parchment paper and slowly ironing it.

You can also use an iron!

You can use a heat tool instead. It adds heat, but without blowing.
Bravo !! I've not used plastic wrap in years anyway, opting for compostable parchment paper, brown paper recycled from packaging and tin foil where needed. I have wanted to make some of these reusable food wraps for the longest time but we don't possess an iron. Each time I think of it, I mean to do it when I visit a friend who does have an iron but never even thought of using the oven. Thanks for that. As Dea Carey stated below, a standard kitchen grater is perfect for grating the wax, I use mine all the time for my home made lip balms and body butters etc.
Love the idea of doing this! Reminds me of when I was a kid in the 70s and my dad would make wax cloths to wax the beautiful Welsh Lovespoons he carved and sold - he would melt candle wax in a saucepan though, and dip the cloths in!

You can also use silicone baking sheets instead of parchment paper or tin foil. They’re reusable and so easy to clean.

Hello, I am so proud of what we are doing to stop polluting our environment here as well. I now have two compost bins, I don't accept plastic at the supermarket, we don't use plastic bottles at all... only the two I use for my diy shampoo/conditioner and my plastic spray mister for my flowers and bonsai plants. Classy and chic ♥️ I started making these awhile ago and found that if you use beeswax, damar resin and jojoba oil they work really well and you don't need to use any bands to hold it on your container's. Pine resin works well but wouldn't recommend it if it's actually touching food because the pine scent and taint the food.

You can also just set a plate or saucer over your bowl of food. These wraps certainly have their place, though. I enjoyed your video.
I can’t wait to make these! I’ve konmari’ed my linens, set aside some for the wraps, and I’m ready to go! My one dilemma is that my beeswax is in a one pound brick, so I have to figure out an efficient way to break it up and melt it. I really liked how you stored these wrapped around a paper towel roll. Could put them in an old Saran Wrap box.

Hi Astar, wonderful project, have you ever tried to rub the bee wax on the cloth and then using a hair blow dryer melting the wax into it?
I did that to waterproof a suitcase... it didn't look pretty, but it worked!
And for those followers that don't like using rubber bands, you could saw an elastic band around it, but it won't be flat and as easy to store as you showed us... thanks Astar, great idea!
Hello, I never thought of using the hairdryer. My oven goes every night when I'm cooking dinner so it's super easy to make them while the oven is hot. I might have mentioned this previously but my Nan used to bind or close things with string. Rubber bands were highly prized objects in her kitchen. When she got one, it was like all her Christmas's came at once. They would be washed and dried in the sun and we were within a inch of bother if we touched them. How life has changed!
Thank you for this green idea . I'm going to make it as a gift for my very well off environmentally conscious mother so she can stop washing tim foil to save the environment . That's just one thing she does to i think is funny to save money and the environment as well . She doesn't need to do it for financial purposes is why I think it's hilarious . She could buy whatever she wanted to That's why it's so hard to get her a gift but this is perfect , homemade and environmentally friendly as well . Actually warm (not hot) wax feels wonderful as it cools on your hands, and comes off v easily once it's cold. Fun.

Our two biggest Australian supermarkets now have plastic recycling bins where you can deposit any (clean) soft plastic wrapping, that you can fold up with your hands. Also, reusable bags at the checkouts are now mandatory. When I'm out clothes shopping, I take a shopping bag with me and reject their branded plastic bags saying (politely), 'no plastic please'.

Americans are strangely obsessed with wrapping food in plastic, paper and aluminium foil. Its not something people really do, in any other culture. Double wrapping is unheard of. It is simply unnessesary. When food needs to be wrapped, there are glass boxes with glass lids, that can be reused a trillion times.

Hello Evgenia, It's not just happening in the America's. It's happening EVERYWHERE. When I do my shopping ALL PLASTIC WRAPPING is left behind. I figure by doing this, it becomes the Supermarket's problem. I make such a loud fuss, slowly slowly it's having an impact and I love that other's are starting to do the same. I can remember when plastic first hit the market. My Nan was appalled and questioned what would become of such stuff. I am so pleased she isn't here to see what has happened and the terrible mess plastic has created. Kind regards Astar
yoplait Oui now comes in glass pots that are awesome. I reuse those to store little bits and dips! They are a bit more expensive than other selections of yogurts, but I still enjoy the taste. I actually write directly to companies to tell them to increase their sustainability and so I've written to Chobani urging them to use glass or other material instead of plastic.
evgenia I live in Texas but when I was in Ireland & Scotland last month I noticed in the grocery store unnecessary overuse of plastic wrapping of produce. Here at home the produce section has bins of unwrapped fruit/veggies. I went into a foreign grocery for some fruit in our hotel but they were all wrapped up. Even bananas in the best natural wrapper was wrapped in plastic.
Oh my goodness I laughed out loud about leaving the plastic behind. I can't imagine what my supermarket would make of that! EVERYTHING comes in plastic containers. Thanks for this video. I can't wait to try it and give as gifts!
Auntie, little easier for you if you melt the beeswax in a double boiler like chocolate. Soak you fabric in that, use tongs to take it out and spread it out on newspaper.
Use a hairdryer if you want instead of oven, use left over beeswax candles or beeswax pellets. I’ve never done it but I use to have a beeswax candles shop on Etsy. Can’t wait to make my own set soon 😀

It seems wise to consider the fact that commercial beekeepers' practices are different from local, independent beekeepers' care of bees. So if you're interested in using beeswax, perhaps you could seek out the local beekeepers' beeswax, and you'll know it comes from someone who is helping bee populations, rather than simply USING BEES for profit. Consider this: the only income made by local beekeepers, to fund all the costs of helping bees to survive, all their work in protecting them from disease and predators, etc., is gotten from local honey and beeswax sales. When you buy from them, you not only get a more pure product (the adulteration of honey sold by big producers is rampant), but you are enhancing bee populations in your vicinity.

However, after a criminal broke into my crappy car, in the winter, I must say that the expensive brands works well as a replacement window, in a pinch!

Fab idea to avoid using plastic wrap. I simply cover any bowl of food with a plate and toss it into the fridge.
