I had some ants in my house over the summer, and I witnessed at least two ants without gasters. They were walking around and foraging along with their nest mates. Very active. I'm not sure if they died shortly after or not. They sure seemed unbothered at the time though.
I always wonder whether ants felt pain like humans do. I guess this is evidence that these they don't really exhibit pain like vertebrates. Amazing video. Thank you so much for that.
Insects only feel pain temporarily while they lose a limb but they don't bleed out like most vertebrates and don't feel the after affects of losing vital parts because of their simple nervous system
Yes, In fact, before i watched this video or even before i saw it, I cut the abdomen of a queen i saw wandering around, Why? It is because i saw a parasite in her abdomen and it needs to be removed. I saw it under a microscope btw. In fact, it actually lived a whopping 3 years. But i preserved it last month because it died. Her name was Jessi, and yes i have been keeping it as a pet.
I've got a carpenter ant with its abdomen torn off right here. I couldn't tell what it was at first, but I began to suspect an abdomenless ant due to the shape of the head, the placement of the legs, and the "stump" where the abdomen should be. Seeing the ant in your video confirms it for me. But anyway, I've had it for a couple hours and it's still pretty active- moving all around the jar and whatnot.
This one is cool. I could could imagine if the bull ant tried sipping the cotton bud and then realize for herself it's also dripping out on the other opening end do to her missing tummy.
I found one last night in the little black ant population at my house. In my 37 years I've never seen that. And I look at bugs as a habit lol. This little ant was walking with the best of them. Besides the obvious lack of abdomen, there was no observable difference in its behavior. My ant had a different posture as well. It was walking with its thorax pointed toward the ground, and its neck was crooked forward. It reminded me of a turret or a tripod. Thank you for providing this research. You never know what small information might open up the doors to great solutions.
I just spotted a tiny black house ant missing its abdomen in my bathroom, there are no other ant species inside to account for it as an injury. It does look odd as it moves but seems to know exactly where it’s going
Victoria L well I'm guessing that you mean that Arthropods have a form of blood known as haemolymph (at least I think that's what it's called) and by sentient beings you mean mammals
The philosopher Shopenhauer famously uses the example of a Bull Ant head fighting it's tail if it is divided in two as an example of the force of life he calls The Will.
My maimed specimen misses the abdomen and is also limp. The motive was me cleaning my desk and inadvertently doing that. My ant is a small one, I don't know what species, but seeing it keeping running gives me a strange sensation. Makes me think of how weird a thing life is, in the end. However also I don't know what I should do with it. Would they develop alternative ways to get energy...
Here because an ant decided to crawl across the table so I, uh... “carefully amputated” its back section. Figured it would die in a few minutes but apparently not.
I wonder how long it would live if you could just take out it’s heart, it obviously doesn’t need it as a pump to oxygenate it’s body. I know that like all insects, it absorbs oxogen through holes in its exoskeleton but surly it still needs something to transport the oxogen to other parts of its body. I’d love a colony of bull ants but it’s hard to get them here, it’s amazing how they look at you.
I accidentaly squished that part on an ant , but he was surprisingly still moving i picked him up and released him , i am wondering if it can survive with a squished part there is a yellow thing comming out of it on the back and her back legs are not functioning properly but she seems lively and when other ant from same colony stopped to inspect it , it didnt attack it just went on its way.
It varies from the species of ant, I've cut of the gaster of 3 different ones and the results were incredibly like wtf (I even cut off their heads afterwards and they could survive for a few hours)
+1878さらば、白い鹿七 no they lack the mental function to feel pain as we do. They don't have pain receptors and have a limited nervous system. They do feel stress, though
No its not actually the ant doesn't feel pain because it doesn't have pain receptors even if it did they would be too small to send even a tiny bit of pain so it uses other body parts to do the work and stop doing what its doing.
There was an ant in my room and I punched it a lot to kill it and her abdomen was off and it was still moving around and became indestructible and is still crawling in my room this minute

This happened to me today, so I searched it up on the web to see if it was a rare ant. Then my mom hit it off my hand.
Dang das sad
Tell her to stop and scoop the ant.
@@xindaxoxou7431 I’ll go and find the ant, one second

i had a carpenter ant that was like this, and its leg was even broken

I found this video after i saw a poor ant worth no abdomen. It is walking around like nothing is worrying. 😥

Did u give her sugar did u not feed her?
It also contains the breathing organ so without the abdomen insect cannot breathe
Some of my ants are missing their gaster too (in an ant formicarium). It's a safe environment, so I don't understand why she is missing it either :(
I like ur voice u should do a video for people having trouble sleeping. Doesn't matter what u talk about, in fact, the more boring it is the better.
I've been seeing these ants in my back yard working along with the regular ants
Doesn't the gaster contain the heart? How does the ant get its blood supply?
Adam Ohm They don't have 'blood' like sentient beings do. They have some sort of juices.
Victoria L well I'm guessing that you mean that Arthropods have a form of blood known as haemolymph (at least I think that's what it's called) and by sentient beings you mean mammals
I was on my PC and I just squashed it's bottom part, I feel so bad about it 😖
So glad I’m not the only one! I found two ants missing their abdomens yesterday and wondered if other people have talked about that
Today kill all the ants that were trying to steal my food
I ain't having no free loaders in my house
Just notice, are they on the job when they getting food?
* feels bad
What were the results of your experiment?
i accidentally stepped on this part of the ant and it fell of i feel so bad

So you mean you found an ant removed it’s abdomen and then created this video?
It varies from the species of ant, I've cut of the gaster of 3 different ones and the results were incredibly like wtf (I even cut off their heads afterwards and they could survive for a few hours)
I was crushing ants and realized that the body was still moving without the head, I'm now understanding more about how ants are supernatural beings
Pls make more vids like this.
I removed an ant's abdomen and it ran like crazy
i do that to tiny ants fire ants they dont die but they dumb
