Aimee, THANK YOU so much for posting this. I knew taking my upholstery hobby to the next level was going to require some creative storage ideas and a reassessment of how we use our house so now I know how to proceed. There are a lot of ancillary components aren't there?! The fabric books alone! Lol. Looks like we either move house or create a workshop out back...our house is a tiny bungalow on a massive lot in Burlington (Ontario). I see a she-shed on the horizon...

My skillset is very limited but I have a dedicated workspace and have adjusted my space for supplies over the years. Keeping it simple seems to be working for me and it's nice to sneak a peek at what a professional had done to cope with working at home. Thanks so much for some ideas I might be able to integrate into my own system which is just above the Fred Flintstone level of technology. Hey Ammie, you have a nice workshop & home. I can appreciate a shop that has functional beauty. I work out of my garage at home; I put most everything on wheels and most everything else is on the walls or hanging from the rafters. I have an 8x10ft trailer that doubles as a cutting table with planks & plywood; floor space is most valuable!

You do some very nice informative videos - thank you for sharing them. I noticed that near the end of this video you have supplies that you do not use very often sitting on the floor under your bench. You might consider creating a wooden tray the size of the space between the upright supports (similar to a drawer with just a 1/2" high lip on the back and sides) with small casters on it that could roll under your bench when not needed but allow everything to be pulled out at once for easier viewing when you are looking for something. This way all your materials are off the floor (in case of minor flooding) and so that little things don't end up being buried next to t he wall out of view. It would also allow the tray to be slid out when doing clean up to make vacuuming easier. Could put a knob, drop down handle or a fabric pull on the outer edge to make grabbing the tray easier when you want to pull it out. Just a suggestion to help keep the floor area clutter free if something drops from your hand and rolls under the bench never to be seen again like happens to me on the odd occasion.

I really love your videos and appreciate your sense of humor. (e.g., "Husbands come and go but shears are forever.") I recently retired from my last job and have been looking for something gratifying to do to keep busy and for profit. Can you really make money doing this? I mean, our society has become a "throw away" society for just about everything. I did see your video on the quality of the furniture of the past. Have you done a video on the business aspect of reupholstering furniture? It looks like you have a large investment in materials. Thanks for your excellent videos.

Hey there Aimee! Very neat home-feel setup ya got goin!;) I live in a split level home in the heart of the furniture capitol Hickory, NC. I work for a high end custom manufacturer full time but I run a small shop in my evening and weekend time for clients/designers at home. My bottom floor of the house is entirely an open garage workshop. I wanted to maybe throw out an idea/ask if you have ever considered a retractable cutting table. Comes in handy for flow match/4-way line-up/spot match fabrics when you need the room for laying out the pattern. It would work great for you in your small space for cutting and you can pull it out when needed and push back in for when you don't need it!
I also notice on other videos from various upholstery specialists on youtube that they don't use a gun and staple-puller/shears holster with a work belt while working. Not sure if you do or don't but I recommend this to anyone in the field because its aggravating picking up and setting down the main tools you need on hand at all times. Especially when you have that (what I like to call) "million dollar pull" and you reach for your gun or scissors and lose your grip in the process!:D
Anyway, thought I would babble a bit because I enjoyed your couple of videos seeing as I am looking for different storage options in my shop for all the "pile up" I have created on projects. I am terrible with organization! Best to you and your "rag tacking" journey as us southerners like to say!
    P.S....
    Also enjoyed your face.
    :)

May be a dim question but do you have to pay for the fabric books? My clients are currently buying their own fabric and supplying it.
Thanks for the videos, they are so useful!

Hi Aimee, just got this video. Obviously it takes a lot of tools and materials to have a full-time upholstery shop. Organization is key which you have developed the space very well in your home to function effectively, I myself am OCD so I like what you have done, You also have what appears to be a huge number of clients as well. I think it would be great for your children to be involved too since they are already very familiar with the work you do. I know from your previous video that you started when you were only 20 years old so with 25 years experience you would be a great tutor for your daughter. So, when are you going to post that picture when you were 20 just starting upholstery? After 25 years of upholstery work it seems to keep you young. It helps doing something you love to do obviously. Have a great day and thanks for the tour of your shop.
