Cutting potatoes for french fries is not as complicated as it may seem. In this video I go over a quick and simple method for cutting fries, as well as five tips when it comes to frying and seasoning your french fries.
Tips:
1. Use a good quality fat. My favorite is lard. It holds up well to heat and has a very mild flavor.
2. Don’t over-fill the fryer. A good ratio to remember is about one pound of oil for every one medium or large potato at a time.
3. Timers don’t work. The amount of time fries need to cook is highly subjective. So it’s best to determine when the fries are done based on color. If you like dark fries, leave them in a little longer.
4. Salt as soon as possible. The salt will cling to the fries best if applied right when you take them out of the oil. The oil should be glistening and still very hot on the fries.
5. Don’t peel the potatoes. The skins provide a great texture for the fries, and they are packed with nutrients that you need to be healthy.

So easy, thanks Dennis!

Good video! I finally learned how to make fries thanks to you!
Thank you so much for this awesome idea!
Great video - short and to the point. Thank you!
You’re welcome
👍Growing up I used have to make homemade french fries..that was the only option because there was no way my parents were buying fries from any fast food place. 😂
Amazingly I have never ever had the desire to make them homemade….starting with a whole potato, although I have purchased a bag of already sliced potatoes once or twice. Suddenly I hav an urge to make them homemade from a whole potato and I can’t remember how I used to cut them so perfectly as a kid. 😂🤣😆 THANK YOU. 🙏💝
I am on the same boat. I used to cut them as a kid now I can't remember to save my knife. Get it lol. I am so lame
Thanks for this! 😁
Thank you so much for this video.
Thank you !!!!! I don't cut potato's into fry's often so I'm glad to have found you! I

Hi Dennis, saw you talking with Sean Cannell and thought I'd check out your channel. You're a natural in front of the camera. I wish I could be as relaxed as you. I've subscribed and will be watching for more great vids.
Thanks for the encouragement!
My favorite ❤️
you taught me how to cut some fries 🤝I like the video
The sharpness of that knife is so satisfying!
Sharp knives make me happy… but in a completely UNcreepy way!
@@DennisfromScratch I totally get it! I am not a phenomenal cook/chef but I still tend to bring my own knives places if I know they won't have sharp ones (like my mother-in-law's) haha
That’s funny! I’ve tried a few brands but Cutco is what I go with. It’s on my list to make a knife video.
THANX. TOP MARKS MATE 👍🏾👍🏾🙂🙂👏🏾👏🏾
Dennis, fun and well-done video. I just subscribed to your channel and look forward to more videos.
Thanks for the compliment!
Literally needed to see this🔥🤤🥔
Prepare for your life to change.

Thank you for the tutorial. I also sometimes dip mine Heinz 57 sauce or generic equivalent. It’s like ketchup with a kick as the old commercial used to say
Nice! It’s a hotly debated topic in our household. My wife loves ketchup with fries… I do not.
I always used a slap chopper gadget to make fries. This is faster, and no spending time digging out potato bits out of the chopper. Thank you
My wife loves that thing. I personally prefer a simple knife. Yes, easier to clean. 😃
This man is an angel
Potato man you rock thank you
Thanks!
I am going to go do this right now.
Dude. Worked like a charm! Thank-you! 👍👍
This whole time I keep cutting them I to big chunks but I found your vid man, thanks for the tips
thanks a lot!!
That's the fastest way I've cut a potato for fries in my entire life . Much appreciated 👍
thanks for a great video! today i am attempting to cook chicken tenders from home and fries 😂 wish me luck lol
Hey, nice video! You're really good at talking to the camera. 😊 Keep up the good work, your audience will find you!
Thanks for the encouragement!
Great Vid ‼️🙌🏾
Thanks 🙌
Thanks! Making fries rn
I love old bay seasoning and malt vinegar on my fries
I liked the video! It’s kind of similar to how I learned to cut french fries from watching Gordon Ramsay. He starts with cutting the potato in half and then basically does what you do to each half.
cant believe there's only 108 views on this vid, good videos man!
Thanks for the encouragement! Growth has been picking up though… so fingers crossed!
Seriously though, totally underrated
If I’m putting these in an air fryer instead of normal frying should I rinse them or do anything special?
Not sure. I have to admit I’m not proficient with air-frying.
Yes rise them!!!
Only 2.7 subscriber's??? Noo you need more bro. Ive learned alot from watching you
Thank you. Share with everyone you know… and their dogs. Haha! Glad to help!
Is lard necessary tho my boy bc i dont think i got some and i dont wanna got out just buy it and not use it as often
You can always use vegetable oil which uses the same refinement process as petroleum crude oil (ya know, like gasoline). Here’s a video I made about cooking oils I suggest: ua-cam.com/video/-tYCIJGtJ9A/v-deo.html
I like the video just based off the Cutco knife he's using! I used to sell those when I was 21 and they are the best knives lol
They’re my favorite I’ve ever tried!
“Another thing, DONT PEEL THE POTATOES”
Me looking at screen after peeling my potatoes 😂
When you mean crispy, do you mean crispy all the way through or just on the skin? I like softer insides.
Just crispy on the skin.
Wow
Wow, indeed.
I'm glad to see you understand what a quality fat is. If you would have said lard a few years ago, everybody would have been flipping out telling you how it causes clogged arteries. Of course we now know that's a bunch of nonsense, the "vegetable" oil has been causing the inflammation and clogged arteries. For anyone reading this, just be cautious of supermarket lard, a lot of it is hydrogenated which ruins it and turns it inflammatory.
Great advise!
@@DennisfromScratch Thank you!
Potatoes are supreme
Your brilliance is unequaled
W video from a W content creator.🙌
W comment
Bro your hair is immaculate👌
Yes. I take great pride in my hair.
Can you pour that lard back into your lard container or does it get too contaminated?
If you’re just frying potatoes, the lard actually stays really clean. So you can definitely reuse it for something else.
On the other hand if you fry any flour in the lard, then it tends to get kinda dirty and not ideal to use for different purposes.
I thought that at the end you were going to tell us how to make french fries 🍟
I subbed!
You have made a wise decision today.
@@DennisfromScratch yess, I made some fries today, and cut them like in this video. Came out looking alot better lol
You should've started with the "don't peel the potatos!" part...
ok
W video
I’m gonna go with “W video” stand for “winning video!” Or maybe “wicked video!” Or how about “world’s best video!”
@@DennisfromScratch You are correct 😁
Great video! Just wish the camera was closer. 😃
This is true. I started doing a zoom shot for my newer tutorials.
From Belgian cooking, double-fry them. Please.
Great Information, however, I wish it was a close up of you cutting
Next time
Julian French fry
Can you air fry them?
Deep frying in lard is the best option for health and taste. But some people do like air frying french fries. I’m personally not a fan of air frying French fries.
Yes. I soak my sliced potatoes in water for 30min, let them dry between some paper towels, coat them in 1 tbsp of olive oil, then airfry them
@@DennisfromScratch Now I cannot agree with you about the Lard for health. Lard/Oil/Saturated Fats over capacitate our Endothelial Cells, reducing the production of Nitric Oxide, leading to Coronary Heart Disease, and possibly other Western Disease (Different diseases, manifest in different people.) Air Fry ftw! Preventing and Reversing Heart Disease is a passion of mine.
I’m skeptical on that point since lard, butter, and other naturally saturated fats are the oils that people have used for thousands of years. Yet, heart disease has only risen up in the last century with a directly proportional increase to the consumption of unsaturated and unnatural trans fats replacing our consumption of naturally saturated fats. I am personally comfortable listening to the wisdom of our ancestors-they’ve gotten us this far.
@@DennisfromScratch lard for health instead of olive oil?? no way!
I skin the potato first and soak them after they’re skinned, then I cut the whole potato into somewhat sticks before I soak them in fresh colder water. I also fry them twice, first at a medium temp and once they’ve cooled I put beer batter on them to be fried again for extra crisp. Add beer to make the fries extra crispy or water if you’re a baby and think the alcohol won’t cook when being fried.
Yeah, babies. Grow up and drink your alcohol.
If only you had the close up or zoom view of the cutting
Not having to peel the potatoes first is a game changer. You can hardly taste the difference and even if you do, it arguably tastes better.
Exactly!
You know how the Japanese invented that cubic watermelon so that they could stack them? Well I want someone to engineer potatoes to be cubes so that when you cut them for fries, you ONLY get the even planks instead of those lame ass corner slivers that I absolutely loathe.
Those are thick enough to be potato wedges my man, good technique but make them smaller they bake or fry better
My fries come in all shapes and sizes. We are pro fry-positivity in our house.
Aren’t we supposed to be able to see the potatoes being cut?
Dang it! I forgot that you needed to see them.

You’re supposed to wash them after you cut them ..
Fred Fredburger
Would you like fries with your fredburger?
When you need a video to see how to cut up potatoes for French fries, you know America is screwed up.
Yeah, it should be required learning in schools.
Peel the potatoes please
But I like the skins!
You should sharpen that knife
I’ll get right on that.
You didn’t even show how to fry them..
2:45
Zoom IN, please-we do t need the kitchen view-I can’t see!
My most sincere apologies. You could try a magnifying glass.
this is crazy easy thank you Dennis🫡
You’re crazy welcome!
Horrible camera angle
That’s not French fries.. French fries are thinner
I just checked. They’re french fries.
@@DennisfromScratch lol ok maybe not the french fries sizes I’m used to. But when prepping in the kitchen we did 3 styles, french fries, chips(like the size in this video)and then wedges. The size on these looks like chips.
Stop doing this! Potatoes deserve respect! They don’t deserve to be abused!
I am a huge potato-rights advocate. I would never do anything to harm a potato.
Thanks!
