How to Make a Beer Caddy | DIY Six Pack Carrier

- Learn how to build a Beer Caddy with DIY PETE! This is a fun and simple project that will be great for barbecues, parties, and heading over to watch a football game with friends and family. It's also perfect to take out for an evening of fishing with some friends. This project costs about $20 to build and can be built with either hand tools or power tools.

Make All of the Cuts
Cut each piece to size on your miter saw. For all cuts’ lengths and widths, refer to the cut list above. Some cuts may require ripping on the table saw or sliding miter saw, this is optional though, you can buy boards to exact size at store. For a complete, detailed cut list, refer to the downloadable plans.
Mark and Cut the End Pieces
For this beer caddy design, the two end pieces have an angle and a rounded top. These cuts are not hard if you do it all step-by-step with your miter saw or jig saw. The first thing we need to do is measure out where the angle starts and stops. On one of the end boards, measure 5 1⁄2” up from the bottom and make a mark on both sides. Then on the top, measure 2 1⁄4” in and make marks on either side. Then mark and drill the holes for the handle to go through. Detailed dimensions, measurements, and layout in the plans.
Assemble The Caddy
Once you have all of your boards cut to size and shape, it’s time to assemble the beer caddy. Apply glue to any joints that will be nailed together. Start by lining up the flush bottom with one of the end pieces. Glue and nail and repeat for the other end. Now with the bottom in place, we can attach the lower and upper side strips. For more detailed steps, photos, and dimensions refer to the downloadable plans.
Apply Stain and Clearcoat
We’re almost done with your beer caddy! Lastly, we need to apply your stain of choice and finish it off with polyurethane or another clear coat/sealer. I chose Minwax’s Special Walnut finish and the spray polyurethane. Use a brush to cut any edges or hard to get to corners. Once its all covered with the stain, allow it to dry for the manufacturer’s recommended time and then hit it all with a clear coat. You’re done!
A couple of add-ons/customizations I added to my beer caddy are: the bottle opener mounted on one end piece, the 5” wide by 2 1⁄4” tall chalkboard strip on the side, and the vinyl decals. The opportunities are endless here. Have fun and DIY!

I first made two of these a couple years back and I was new to wood working and had trouble finding the boards of the right thicknesses, but the two caddies I made were GREATLY appreciated. I have got my wood ready, and this time I made a template for the pieces to make sure the angle is good & the curve at the top looks right. I have decided to use dowel rod rather than the galvanized pipe, though the pipe does give it a really nice look. I decided on the one side to use a single large quarter inch thick board which I will paint with the chalk board paint rather than 2 smaller boards. This make it easier to put retirement, happy birthday, promotion messages on it. The other side I will still use two boards because it gives it a very classy look. I pre-fit everything to see that I cut all boards square and to measurement, then sanded them. I stained all the wood the first time with the special walnut and it really gave a quality look. I have used poplar wood for the second batch and I do not think I will stain it since I picked up some leftover Halloween themed bottle openers that look like black skulls. I think they will give a nice touch for 50/60 year birthday, and retirement presents. The black opener on the white wood will be a nice accent. If you want to give the wood the feel of fine furniture, put two coats of spar varnish with sanding after each coat dries. You can upsell your quality by explaining the difference of spar varnish in case your cold bottles sweat or it happens to rain on your pic nic. I, personally, have found that with wood that looks like and feels like quality furniture, these caddies can be perfect for where a group of people want to each chip in $10 for Old Joe's going away, or a raffle at the Loyal Order of Kangaroo Lodge. Again, this will blow away the Etsy $Twenty something knock offs. Most guys will not buy this for themselves, but it make a great gift and you can price it at a range fits what a lot of groups are looking to spend. You can display it with expensive imported beers (use empties), so people realize you have made something really fine.

Hey Pete - Thanks for all the great videos. I have been binge watching your videos which has encouraged me to take up some woodworking projects around the house. I'm an absolute novice with no experience but looking forward to building some great things with the help of your videos and extensive guides on your website. I had one quick question - I am trying to determine when it's best to use nails vs. screws. Is there a reason you went for nails on this project instead of screws? Do you a simple rule-of-thumb you follow when determine which to use for the project?
Hi Sunny, so glad that you have been inspired to get making!! In general if I am working with smaller/thinner pieces of wood, using nails reduces the risk of splitting. Screws also tend to give stronger joints as they actually draw two pieces together, so if strength is needed, I would use screws.

Hey I’m doing this as a project for woods class and I was wondering how you got the sections that split up the beers to stay?
Hi, they are fairly loose so you can pull the out easily and it can be used for other things. But I would cut a small shallow groove in the base for each piece to stay in place better next time.
Hey! I love this design and was looking for the lumber to make a beer caddy. I found the 1/4" material, but the widest 1/2" broad I can find is 1/2x6. I went to 2 Home Depots and looked online. I can't seem to find the 1/2x8 anywhere. Suggestions?
Hi Robert! hmm... you could use 3/4 if you had to and could make some slight adjustments to make it work. It would be a bit more beefy but would work. You could look into using 1/2 inch plywood. Otherwise you would need to use a planer or find a local lumber yard who might have more of a variety. I found mine in a a section with poplar, pine, oak etc in project size pieces. I'm guessing they must not have a section like that at every store unfortunately. Anyways, let me know if any of that helps. Good luck!
DIY PETE Hey Pete! I decided to go to Home Depot and get a 1x8. I ripped the board to 6 inches, then cross cut it to 4 feet and then decided to resaw the piece so I had a half inch and quarter inch piece. This was a little more labor intensive, but it wasn't too bad at all. It's an alternative for those who can't seem to find half inch poplar. Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate your project videos!

Would the bottles sit in the holder if you used 1/2 x 6 pieces? I know it's actually a little smaller than 6 inches but would save time/money buying the 6 inch planks
Its more expensive but you can get hardwoods of 1/4 by various widths at Menards.

Put a 2nd coat of poly where the chalk board paint goes. It will seal up the edges of the tape so the chalk board paint will not swap under it.

Pete, if you were to sell these how much would you charge? I have been thinking about changing careers. I own a window and door co. I recently was in a really bad car accident my neck and back need to be operated on. I have nerve damage in both and also in my one arm. My Dr advised me that I may never be the same again and may want to think about changing what I do for a living. I first thought I could keep my company just hire subs. The problem with that is I can not find anyone that works like me. Cares about what they are doing like I do. I install doors that cost anywhere from $500.00 to $17,000.00. I installed Allen Iversons door when he was with 76'rs. I am ranked #20 out of 35,900+ window and door company's in the state of PA. So walking away from it is killing me because I love what I do. However knowing my limitations is wise. So I really think I am gonna turn my garage into a workshop. I am gonna sell at flea markets and online. So that is why I want to pick your brain on what you think something like this would sell for. I mean I could see ya charging 45 to 50 for that. Your farm table being solid wood I think like 600 to 700 for it would be cheap. Am I off base? I plan on making band saw boxes and spice racks.... copper garden sinks with work stations.... I am in the infancy or researching prices on materials and tools. I have mostly everything. Just missing a band saw drill press and lathe. Thank you for you time Kind regards joe
