I've had this issue pop up multiple times over the years. Every time it would take me forever to figure out how to fix. Even once I "fixed" it, I didn't actually know what I did in order to get it to work again. BUT FINALLY, I've figured the steps needed to fix this consistently and easily. So today, I'm sharing it with you.

OMG!! So happy to find this solution! I had trouble getting an image with OBS. After a while, I gave it another try and stumbled upon a fix. I was happily using it until a few days ago when the dreaded black screen came back! Then I was so disappointed when these steps didn't seem to work. But I rebooted and then I saw am image! Thank you so much!! Just make sure people know they may have to reboot instead of just closing the windows.

@@NobleArcade Thanks! Well, after I logged on earlier today, things were fine. But then the black screen came back! I checked the settings from your video and things were fine. I rebooted, but still the black screen! I have to live stream an event tomorrow and I uploaded overlays. The overlays are fine, but no imagine from my camera/capture card. I'm so done!

Btw if anybody's settings say desktop app, just select that or go onto the file explorer.

do you mind explaining to me why to set it to power saving and not performance if you do know?
@@7sukuyomi I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's because power saving mode runs on a different graphics driver compared to the high performance
@@theadventurouswatcher7978 does it effect the recording quality? cause other then that, it does make sense to make the graphics worse for the obs program itself

It personally didn't change it for me, but here's what I did: Open OBS. Where you see "Sources", right click on
"Display". Go to "Properties" at the bottom. Then Change the "Capture Method" to "Desktop Duplication" AND/OR
change the "Display" option. This worked for me. But thanks for the vid anyway.

@@Air54 it isn't necessarily "display", it's whatever you're trying to stream in your scene, could be a game or application too. but it's the window you're trying to get to show on the stream located in the source panel.

Avtual life saver, when i was in settings the only option was my graphics card, not my processer but this fixed my problem instantly.

This method is correct. If it's still a black screen, it's possible that the preview doesn't fit on the screen. You can click "Display capture" on the source and drag it from the top left corner of the canvas.

at the time im watching this its 137.000 weiws. nowim just gonna take the 120.00 and do some maths.
lets say 1/5 of them just stumpled upon it and left with watching, thats like 96.000 left now lets say that 1/3 watced it 3 times in total over time. that is still 32.000 people who watched it. even when you take half of that that is 16.000 people who got help, that is an incredible number. this helped me too, thanks alot man.

Edit: making this change stopped all of my OWN3D animations from working...
Sorry that is weird. It didn't do that to mine. You may have to re- add them.
If that doesn't work, I really am sorry this is the only fix I have for now.

After going through 6 Videos (which wasted my time) this one was the most helpful this literally the most straightforward thing on the planet instead of most tutorials that are 17 mins long this one was straight to the point and got it done in under 5 mins!

I haven't had that pop up in a while but..bit... can't u just press okay (or something) and continue recording?
I had that happen a few times when u first did thus fix and after getting rid of the prompt I was still able to record clean video.

Recently went from a double to triple monitor setup and OBS was only recognizing the left monitor for some reason. This tutorial forced it to recognize the center one which is exactly what I wanted. Many thanks!

All of my tutorial videos were recorded this way. I dont know what it changes but if youve seen amy of my tutorials u can decide for yourself whether it looks good or not.

@@simandabuilds9156 which console are your trying to capture? Might be your HDCP settings. Not sure Switch has this setting, but PS4/5 and XB1/X/S all have it. Setting needs to be enabled before you plug in the capture card.

This is where I’m confused. I did everything you said and it’s still a black screen. I’ve tried it with my elgato and that doesn’t work. I just have my laptop hooked up to my monitor through an HDMI cord now. And the only thing that is different for me is in the desktop settings, I don’t have the classic app, I have the desktop and Microsoft store app. Idk how to fix this 😣

It didnt work for me. When I got to graphics settings there was no classic app so I left it on default. When I switched it to power saving it did nothing, the screen is black still. Are there any other methods?

@TECHNICALLY UPGRADED Oh I already fixed my self. I forgot about this comment. Also it wasn’t that I just had to put OBS to power saving mode on my Radeon settings not my default ones

So funny story:
Basically my obs wasn’t recording video but then I noticed that in this video your obs had another scene in it (PC Screen Capture (for tutorial))
And then I noticed that I only had one (just “scene”). So I added another scene and another display capture and sure enough, it worked! :) so to anyone who has the issue and this method didn’t work, it might be because of this.
