There may come a day when I'd be willing to throw away $5 a month on a video game subscription, but I have zero interest in anything like that now. There are far too many games already out there (and still to come before an all-online future arrives) that I can buy and own for me to be tempted to settle for renting them. If the gaming industry ever goes to a streaming-only model and games can't even be pirated anymore...honestly, I'll live. At the rate I've been getting through them, I already have more games than I could possibly complete in my lifetime, anyway.

Pretty sure that’s impossible… technically physical isn’t even owned material. All you own is the physical plastic. It’s said all the time when you buy a physical game you are buying a license for that game, not actually owning the game itself. Technically speaking if a company wants to revoke that license they can send an update remotely to have the console no longer be able to play that game (I’m sure there’s some legality that prevents this but I’m only saying they can TECHNICALLY do this). Sure you could keep your console offline and still have access to said game but even then most games these days need patches to work as intended.

If exclusivity doesn't matter, why is Nintendo so successful? Why is the PS5 outpacing the PS4? Why does Burger King sell Whopers and McDonalds Big Mac's? Exclusive services and products draws consumers to a company. That's why Disney doesn't let WB make Mickey Mouse cartoons. That's why MARVEL is only on Disney +. Exclusivity is good business. Make a good product so people will pay for it.

    • @Lrbearclaw

To answer, it is less the exclusivity and more the quality of the games.
Your fast food examples don't hold up either as there is a difference in quality and cooking styles/menu items.
It is not a matter of exclusive titles, it is the quality of the product. When Xbox put out Halo CE and 2, Fable 1, and so many things through the 360 Era they were top of the game. Then Sony came back in the PS4 Era with great titles and not shitting on bed by saying that the console required you to be always online.

The PS5 only has about 3 more exclusives than Xbox has released so far. The PS5 undermines your point, Sony chose to extend cross gen to keep sales rather than exclusivity.
But asides that part, Sony has reliability in consistency of content and quality coming. Don't forget Sony was already taking the crown for dominance of consoles when Xbox first entered the market, PS1 and PS2 absolutely upended the industry and changed the market, Xbox comes in later against a now rooted Sony. Sony put Nintendo on the back foot to the point that Nintendo pivoted away from traditional consoles.
Xbox failed to capitalise on why the 360 was a cultural zeitgeist of its generation. The Xbone caused immense brand damage and they've never caught up as Sony has continually chugged along. Xbox needs to be putting more games out and better games out. So far most acquisitions have failed to give fruit, Obsidian is the only one to be regularly releasing games and doing good things.

Exclusivity absolutely matters! Xbox is only concerned bcoz for 2 consecutive console cycles they’ve been trailing behind PS and the gap is only getting wider. Sony continually puts out great content whether it be 1st party or 2nd games. Only thing is the quality of some of those titles - and this is prolly a thing that applies to all console manufacturers and dev/publisher issue. Gaming industry needs to be bolder with their approach to games and maybe not go by the ‘monkey see, monkey do’ mentality. On another note, and generally speaking, physicals should never go away in place for online store fronts. It’s better for the consumer and the devs for reasons touched upon. The world isn’t ready for an all digital future/streaming games via XYZ device and neither is the tech there yet. Finally, shareholders and going public is what could really hurt (if not kill) the gaming landscape.

What companies like MS (Xbox) want for the future rarely comes true. They want an all-digital (streaming) ecosystem with no consumer rights or game preservation. But the reality of a lack of a reliable, global digital infrastructure is going to be the real determining factor if they succeed, or not. What Culture acknowledges this, but it's always good to emphasize whenever corporations talk about their ideal business goal, they always ignore real world factors to make it more appealing to investors. The reality is consoles are not going away. They may not be as powerful and will shrink in size, but ease-of-use for non-tech savvy people is why consoles have been a corner stone of the gaming industry since it began. Gen Z may not be tied to hardware, but not all hardware is, or will be capable of streaming... Because the underlying infrastructure isn't there, yet. It's an Catch-22, MS always finds itself in when looking too far forward vs. what is possible right now.

The thing for me is, I like exclusives, and I typically didnt see an issue with them because I thought it was friendly competition. However, as of recent times it become more everyone wants a digital library rather you having the game yourself and its going to get to the point where its just like streaming services. Youve got Paramount+, Max, Disney+, Netflix, etc. And if you want to watch anything youve got to subscribe. Now they are all going to want you to sign into their services for the "privilege" of playing their games rather than you owning them anymore. Its already annoying as is because everyone wants you to sign up for accounts to something to play or access some cloud, but man it sucks.
I dont think consoles are going away, and I wouldnt want them to. Not like they would anyway, because even if Xbox decides to abandon the market, Nintendo and Sony have no reason to. Especially when their homeland, Japan, is such a big console priority market. I personally love consoles, and I do like the console wars in that I think its fun from time to time to compare. but man some people really do take it way too seriously.
With Xbox though, it really doesnt help that Xbox hasnt even been pushing out their own games like that. They keep buying up studios to try to make up a library for them, and who are, or were, working on projects already before the acquisitions. Theyve got more 1st party studios than Sony, and yet most of them arent even working on anything, or the ones they are are stuck in development limbo. The games that do come out are mid to lackluster, and then theyve got iconic IPs that they keep letting sit on the shelf. Like where is the next Gears after that cliffhanger from the last one 5 years ago? Phil keeps saying Xbox has got 100 games on the way for the past 2 years (didnt say it this year though), but you could say that for anyone as long as you are including 3rd party titles and back catalogue games.

The Original Xbox & Xbox 360 had killer exclusive titles, even Japanese ones. The Xbox One & Xbox Series will never top them.

I used to only want physical copies of all my games. Now that I have a PC, my mind has changed. The deals are so good on Steam during different sales that I've saved a lot less money on games that I've wanted for a long time, but couldn't get because the physical copies were to expensive or the digital copies through Xbox/Playstation were to expensive. If companies like Xbox and Playstation want to go all digital, they have Steam to compete with and their prices really need to reflect that. I honestly haven't touched my Xbox in months now that I have my PC. The only time I've turned my Xbox on was to run some updates, that is it.
