*Interestingly North Korean Special Operations Force still operated AN-2 for paratroopers and infliration flight unto South Korean. It's slow speed, fabric covering plus ability to cutting out the engine and gliding quietly during flight making its almost undetectable by South Korean radar. In turn, South Korean also brought a number of Chinese and Poland version of AN-2 for the same purposes.*
I will never forget the story of an AN-2 that I heard about in the 1980's (before the fall of the Berlin wall). An East German aircraft mechanic was tired of living in those political conditions and he decided to take his entire family of 14 (adults and kids) and sneak them into West Germany. He chose an AN-2...one he had never flown before...he had never flown any plane before...because he wasn't a trained pilot. Somehow his familiarity with aircraft systems, and the forgiving and gentle nature of the AN-2 allowed him to take off, fly, and land with safety. What a brave man (and family), and what a great airplane.
Best plane in the world! Good old AN-2. Too bad they don't make them any more. I wish I could afford to buy one and fly it around on weekends just for fun.
I saw one of these up close at an aeroclub show. The propeller looks ridiculously tiny, compared to the huge boxy fuselage. It gave me an impression that due to laws of physics, it could not possibly take off. But it did take off. With this kind of peculiar, graceful elegance.
I worked on an-2 and an-3t, in Russian flight schools this type was primary during a long time, on initial training. I have flown 1000 flight hours on this plane.

Hey guys it should come as no surprise because of the great track record and cough condition capability of the AN2 that somebody was going to convert it from the 1000 HP radial to a turbine power! These days it seems that anything can be made into a turbine engine, lengthen the nose A LOT get get you CG back and I really cant think of a better conversion. Looked very interesting on the AN2
Correct. Inertial starter. Electric motor spins up a flywheel to speed, and then it is clutched to the engine to release its momentum. The carried momentum of the flywheel is greater than the electric motor alone. Drawback? If the engine does not light off, a second spin-up is needed for a second attempt. Some of these inertial starters have a hand-crank backup to spool up the flywheel.
thats because many ww2 and also later were using aircraft engines. The sound of starter is similar for all engines with huge displacement , you have to save energy in gyro for being able to turn the crankshaft. Direct operational starter wouldnt have enough torque.

That's a myth. The An-2 shows up on radar just fine.
The An-2 is not made out of wood and fabric. Sure it has fabric but it's a HUGE metal slow moving target

I love how the exhaust fumes nicely go into the cockpit in startup
Relaxes the pilot :P
Hahaha, that is à great one 🤣🤣🤣
Legend 👍
It doesn't have to, I've seen these with a long exhaust pipe going down the side.

Do you like these ANTONOV airplanes ?

No!
Love them

this plane is the safest in the world 👀😁.. i jumped from one of this... many times.. 3000 meters
We have one of these at the airport where I live and you can always tell when it’s in the air
Most times, it’s pretty easy to tell whether a planes in the air or not😜
Oh I also live somewhere where there is an antonov an2. Papa bits wow we are same

0:44 Sounds like Han Solo is having hyperdrive engine trouble again.
They have the same starter as the Millennium Falcon.
And the have the same speed too!
I grew up with these planes. We were standing behind them when the pilot was warming up the engine doing the smooth criminal.

Something about radial engines just sound cool.
It's where large v-twin motorcycles get their sound. Just imagine a Harley Davidson engine but made in a full circle

0:49 I already flew with that Antonov!
Can we have this thing in MS Flightsim 2020 :)
Done some skydives out of one of these, airspeed so slow it’s like doing a BASE jump.
Yep I call the an2 when I first saw it when I looked up at it while skydiving like you did and it’s basically a loud disregarding slug

1:23 there is a F1 engine Thats used to start this beast

That is one big assed beautiful bird!!! Any clue what the fuel burn rate in normal flight would be, I know a 1000 hp engine doesnt run for free!
180 liters per hour
Like the Boeing B-17 engines
I love the videos and channel

have you see the Mickael Manousakis's plane an AN2 with this plane he has go out in Deuth and go on in USA
the smoke is a crime against the environment🤣
Ehh, it's only burning off oil accumulated in the bottom cylinders. As all radials do. Once it's warmed up the exhaust will be clean.

Curtiss Wright R-1820, the Polish version is the ASz-62 and the Russian version is the Shvetsov ASh-62.
