Little Audrey outsmarting crooks long before Macauley Culkin. Kinda a neat take on the "Little Red Riding Hood" trope, only instead of having a talking wolf, having a burglar instead, which is just as scary, and more realistic.
This DOES remind you of the home alone movies! I had not noticed that until you pointed that out,but you're right; the general plot of a youngster going to war with a burglar or burglars, and even the way Audrey gets (briefly) outsmarted and captured by the crook reminds you of Kevin getting done so by Harry and Marv, again, however briefly,as rescue is mere seconds away(the way Old Man Marley,in the original, and the pigeon lady,in the sequel, almost immediately come to his aid as Harry and Marv are trying to put and end to Kevin.) Good analogy!
I'm 15, I just found this cartoon today for the first time in my life... and my name's Audrey and I've been playing the violin for seven years. This made me happy :)
Granny obviously watches TV wrestling; the cliche in those days was that "old ladies" loved to watch wrestlers in the'50s, and cheered them on in living rooms all over America...
I always remembered 5:00, when Granny is just coming home and hears the voice of "a damsel in distress" from inside, granddaughter Audrey,of,course. Hey,Audrey's grandmother may be old and feeble, yet strong enough to rescue her young granddaughter and assist her in beating the bad guy!
Kurt Kauffman Actually, Jeannie Roberts was the original 30s Olive Oyl. Questal took over in 1942. She also voiced Junior Owl, and many of the boy characters in Famous Studio cartoon shorts.
Audrey's bad luck @ 4:55 is something we can probably relate to,in a way,if we've ever been chased-notice just as she's just short of the top step the burglar/wolf has pulled the stairway cover off the entire stairway, thus causing her to slide back down into his waiting arms. I mean, think about it,if you've ever been chased, desperately trying to escape or get away from your pursuer-bingo-you're not quite fast enough and or they're just too quick for you, right when your source of refuge,so to speak,is just beyond your reach. I did see this when I was a kid frequently, when they had the Woody Woodpecker and Casper the friendly ghost show. Because Casper was produced by Paramount,as was Little audrey, they would occasionally show Little Audrey cartoons as well, plus other Noveltoons,Modern Madcaps, etc.
Well, for that matter, most burglars want to get into the home, get their haul, and get out as soon as possible. It just doesn't seem plausible that this particular burglar -- having already filled his bag with whatever it was that he found in Grandma's house -- would gratuitously seek to add several counts of child abuse to the charges that might be filed against him.
This was one of the last cartoon to use a brief laugh at the end, but last two were "Fishing Tackler" and "Pest Pupil" did not use her laugh at the end. The last cartoon that Little Audrey used her famous laugh at the end was "Dizzy Dishes".
It seems like this time, the wolf was a man rather than a wolf. But I gotta say, a man is more fitting for the role of the villain than a wolf. Because when it gets right down to it, we human beings can be the most wicked creatures in existence if we choose to be.
Don Rockwell actually wrote the "American" lyrics for Tatsuo Takai's original "Tetsuwan-Atom" theme, 'sygo'. Fred Ladd wanted a theme song with "action" lyrics to match the images seen in the opening title, and decided a "boy chrous" was the best way to emphasize it...if it sounded like one of Winston Sharples' "Famous Studios" confections, that's one on me!
Originally released as a 1955 Paramount theatrical "Noveltoon", directed by Seymour Kneitel. By this time, Audrey was more popular in her Harvey comic books than at the movies! Only two more cartoons followed this one, before she "retired" from the big screen in 1958.
I remember first reading this story in comic book format. The cartoon here follows the comic-book plot pretty closely, although it exaggerates the grandmother's infirmity which wasn't a plot point in the comic, and a few lines of dialogue in the comic have been omitted for the cartoon, possibly because only in comic book format is talking a free action. ;)
Little Audrey's panties ALWAYS peeked out at one time or another- even in her Harvey comic book stories and the 1951 King Features comic strip drawn by Steve Muffati- because she's supposed to be adorable and CUTE! Osamu Tezuka's "Uran" {"Astro Girl"} in "ASTRO BOY" had a similar trait...
I wish we sould see this with the original Paramount titles and Audrey song as originally made instead of the artifical "Harveytoon" cut and generic Noveltoon title music.
Actually, 'Noveltooner', when this was initially released, Paramount had stopped using "Little Audrey Says" as her theme music, and began using the "standard" Noveltoon/Modern Madcap theme used in the opening credits from 1955 through 1964, regardless of which character was appearing in them. To make a long story short, the studio was starting to "phase" Audrey out of their production schedule {as previously mentioned, she starred in only two more "Noveltoons" before her last one in 1958}.
Uncredited Voices: Jackson Beck - Burglar Jack Mercer - Wolfie (screaming) Mae Questel - Little Audrey, Audrey's Mother, Phone Operator Sid Raymond - Wolfie
Little Audrey could sure escape quickly from -- er -- bondage. But how did Grandma's pinning Burglar to the floor for three seconds assist the law enforcement process?
CAN SOMEONE HELP ME!! im looking for an old cartoon like these. its about 2 poor kids. its a boy and a girl and they have a dream that they go to this place LOADED with food. at the end of the dream a Baker brings food to their house and the little boy pokes himself in the butt with a fork! i wanna find it! lol
If you think about it, a man is potentially more wicked and cruel than a wolf. Besides, that old story has been remade so many times before. In this case, we learn that the greatest threat to humanity is not wolves but humanity itself.
+Spondon Alam "Eh-heh! New bridgework, dear!" Bridgework refers to having fake teeth, whether it be dentures, wearing caps or having false teeth surgically installed in the mouth.

Cutie Pie Yare yare daze, some crooks have the most rotten luck, and thank god for that.
+Cutie Pie Yeah, Audrey may be naive, but she's no fool.
And Granny may be old and lame, but not even that stops her from rescuing her little granddaughter, and helping her capture the bad guy. Ha,ha.
She had such a cute little walk. Love that little girl.💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖.

Cartoons: the place where grannies use roids since 1942
Mae Questel voiced Little Audrey and Betty Boop AND the 40s-50s version of Olive Oyl.(The original Olive Oyl was voiced by Jennie Roberts).
Good job Audrey and Grandma !

The burglar fails at life. He got outmaneuvered by a little girl AND whooped by an old lady. :P
Mae Questel is the voice of Little Audrey and she was the voice of Betty Boop and Olive Oyl too.
Mae Questal was a very quirky, talented voice actress.
Kurt Kauffman Actually, Jeannie Roberts was the original 30s Olive Oyl. Questal took over in 1942. She also voiced Junior Owl, and many of the boy characters in Famous Studio cartoon shorts.
+Tornado1994 Yup, like the ones from the many Casper cartoons for instance.

Still, nothing is more fun than a bloated wolf after stuffing his face with Grandma and Red Reding Hood.
Damn... that grandma must be a former wrestler to take on that burglar!!

Little Audrey plays the violin like Jack Benny.
I know! I miss that song too:
'About what Little Audrey has to saaaaaaay!'
God, I miss that!
Grandma kicks ass!!!

I LOVE Little Audrey!
Jackson Beck is the voice of the Burgular
I loved Little Audrey...I had the ep when she ate to much junk food and she has that nightmare.
the beginning of this reminded me of Little Lulu haha
it should Paramount created Little Audrey because they lost the rights to Little Lulu.
wait, you mean Little Lulu was part of the Harvey Comics group at one point
I liked watching the Audrey segments whenever I turned on to Casper reruns...
Soo funny when her grandma kicks asss!!!!
I vaguely recall these from when I was 4 or 5.
