You're welcome John, the Pen Tool is a great way to create very accurate selections. Depending on the object it may not be the fastest (in this case with rings it was) but it is always the most accurate since you can go back and easily adjust the points until they are perfect. George
This video was a game changer for me. I just eliminated 4 complicated backgrounds using the pen tool for the very first time. Typically I use the quick selection tool and fight with it like crazy. I completed 4 photos in the time it used to take to do just one. THANK YOU for the clear, concise demonstration and explanation. I suddenly LOVE the dreaded pen tool.
A really nice drill to see if you got the understanding of the pen tool. Just download the picture and go after it. By the time your done, you will be amazed and how much better you are using this important PS tool! Rich
Thanks Rich, I use different selection tools for different reasons but when you have curves like in this rings photo nothing beats the pen tool. George
A massive thanks...i was frightened of the pen tool and after watching ur tutorial i took my time and cut out a person from a background ...thanks and keep up the great work and you are very good at explaining things
Not sure what you mean by pressing Okay, that is not part of the process. You make the selection and leave the selection active. Then use that active selection to make the layer mask.
Thanks for the shortcut technique ! But I think this is not professional Clipping Path. Thanks again for your kind helping mind to make us learn. Go ahead !
You're welcome. Actually professionals would use the pen tool to remove the background in this picture. It is the best way to work with smooth curves. George
Now having got the most Ican from elemente thanks to your brilliant dvd course,I,m ready o upgrade to cc 2019. Does your cc dvd cover all the 2018 and 2019 updates?
hey, i have a question. i followed every step thoroughly, but the filling part to remove a piece of the photo doesnt exactly remove that part, it just colors it. How did u remove a part after selecting and filling in black?
Hi, make sure that you have the layer mask side of the layer selected when you fill with black. IF the image side is selected all you will get is black paint on the image, if the layer mask side of the later is selected then the black will block the image at that point.
Have been using this technique for awhile and worked great...but all of a sudden now when I am working with additional selections and go to fill with the paint bucket it fills everything except the selected area...any tips?
@@HTGGeorge I did use the Invert but then when you go to make a second selection within the first (like when you cut out the inside of the rings in your video) it doesn't give me invert as an option .
Hi, on the secondary selections I am just filling those on the layer mask with black using the paint bucket. No need to invert those as you want to fill inside that selection.
Nice tutorial but my challenge is the inside part, I cannot paint it out because it tells me the shape layer should be first rasterized. Please advise me.
Hi Ryan, that notice about rasterizing the layer means that it is currently a smart layer. You can't edit pixels directly on a smart layer, so it needs to be converted into a normal image layer by rasterising it. Just right click on the layer name and chose Rasterize Layer from the popup menu.
Not sure what could be happening. Check the settings on the pen tool, and make sure you don't touch the keyboard while making the selection, do everything with the mouse.
Hi, the original photo was great, no problems with it. Unless...you wanted or had a need for a different background. In that case you will need to remove the existing background. For instance putting the wedding rings as an overlay on a wedding photo. Thus the video. George
Hi, Thanks for sharing. Do you prefer Autoretouch, an AI-powered image editing tool to automate the clipping path, background removal process? I have heard for bulk editing it is so helpful to reduce time and effort. Need your opinion regarding that tool.
Hi Al, once you have the selection made if it is doing the inside instead of the outside go up to the Select menu and click Invert, that will switch it from inside to outside.
The background eraser tool will have trouble around the shadows below the rings and won't give you a good result with this image. The pen tool takes longer but is far more accurate. The background eraser tool is great on some images but it tends to have trouble with gradients along the edge of the selection (like the shadows in this pic).

How to do the same but in Illustrator from minute 7:30 make selection after drawing with the pen tool?
Sorry, I stopped using Illustrator years ago, I prever CorelDraw.
after make selection and press okey, i can't crop the path from the pen tool instant it select all the picture edge, how to fix?

what is the shortcut key in eliminating path drawn by pen tool?
ctrl+. cancels the path while you are making it. Or just go to the Paths tab and click off of that path

While I get the concept of this video as a photographer I think the original photo was really damn good.
