Naughty Dog did not want go all in live service. They still wanted to make single player games. That's why they bined the project. They did not realise that live-service game would require all their available recources. Bungie have to tell them about it.
An open world multiplayer game isn't really what fans of factions wanted tbh. It's sad it was cancelled as it sounded cool, but yeah... People just wanted factions 2. I think they could realistically release a factions style MP game with seasonal content... The game they had planned was clearly too ambitious imo
I know you want to say it but are trying to be open minded that Marathon can be a success but it's looking very unlikely. The peak player count for the Marvel Rivals playtest is just over 50k. It's not quite the same market but close enough. That's with MCU's huge brand IP as a draw versus Marathon's new IP which looks weird at best. No way I see Marathon pulling in numbers to support it long unless it's got some new trick that revolutionizes the genre.

I’ll wait until the games go on sale, the bugs have been fixed, and countless YT channels have their reviews up before I buy anything
