Kayaking the Florida keys - 9 days from Key Largo to Key West

- Kayaking from Key Largo to key west on our inflatable kayak (Sea Eagle Razorlite).
It took us 9 days to paddle a total of 194 km (121 miles).
Key Largo -- Tavernier Key -- Islamorada -- Long Key -- Key Colony -- Molasses Keys -- Big Pine Key -- Upper Sugarloaf Key -- Key West (Fort Zachary Taylor State Park)
With stops at Dove Key, Indian Key and Pigeon Key
We encountered dolphins, sharks, turtles, key deer, and many other species.

When I saw your video for the first time. It was December 5th 2019 I was in the hospital. I went into the hospital in November on Thanksgiving, I was in the ER and then they passed me to the ICU. I was in the ICU for 3 weeks and then I saw your video. I quickly called my sister and told her life is too short I want to do this. A month later I came out of the tired and drained, unfortunately then covid hit us I love kayaking and I also love fishing. You guys inspired me to get out and try new things, thank you so much for sharing your journey with us.

I needed this. I have a shallow draft sailboat with two 9ft oars that has been to the Lower Keys several times.
I enjoyed your photographic moments especially the small pack of sharks. The unexpected is the norm down there.
What I love is the sense of awe and living. Because there is constantly a sense of wonder mixed with a sense for danger.

Awesome video! Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge is one of my favorite places to camp and kayak. Have always wished I could travel the full length of the Keys by kayak, great to see how it can be done!

Thank you for posting. When I did that trip I didn't have the luxury of 9 days. I had paddled 5000 miles solo from Maine headed to Key West raising awareness about Veteran Suicide in 2018. I used a sea Kayak 17'7"

@@fartherout9887 I couldn't go up the west coast of Florida due to the enormous red tide, so I couldn't make Houston. I am a safety kayaker for Adventures Unlimited and the Trinity River Coalition.The journey renewed my faith in humanity with all the wonderful people I met on the trip. I had an orca breach the water 3 feet off my bow in Maine and to kayak wit 70 manatees on the Atlantic Coast of Florida was mind blowing.

1. What time of year did you do the paddle?
2. Did you use 2 cars or did you get a shuttle back up to your vehicle? If so what shuttle service and do you recommend them?
3. I saw that you stealth camped on Tavernier Key. Why did you choose to camp there and would you camp there again? Were you worried about getting caught camping there?
4. Did you factor in the tides when you planned your paddle?

What an amazing adventure! Definitely need to put that on my bucket list. I did a four day excursion down the Delaware river and loved every minute of it we stayed on islands along the way. When you were tent camping did you stay at designated campgrounds or did you just stealth camp ?
We loved every minutes of it too!
We tried to stay in state campgrounds and private campgrounds as much as possible but that was not possible every where so we ended up stealth camping a few nights.
Epic!!!
I would have chosen a Hobie with pedal-drive, and sail for efficiency, but that was truly awesome!

A sail would have been nice for sure! But being human powered made it even more of a challenge.

This Everglades challenge looks rough, 300 nm! We moved to Marseille, France after this video. Might have to save that challenge for another day! 😅

It seems there’s many options for free camping on the keys & islands on this route… did you do that? Did you find much opportunity to hammock camp? What bug repellent do you recommend & what gear did you find to be least useful?
It was not easy to find places to stop/camp, at least on the Atlantic side of the Keys, as most of the shoreline is either Mangroves or private properties. We had to plan ahead and find spots on Google earth and made sure it would be allowed/tolerated to camp there, and when not possible, we booked a hotel room or a campsite. Hammock camping would have been tricky, there aren't so many big trees, and rarely close together, we're glad we took the tent.
I think we used some deet-based product as repellent, it did good against mosquitos but not that good against no-see-ums. But it really helped though. I read somewhere that deet based product are damaging gear it comes in contact with, so that might be something to be careful about.
Something we brought that we ended up not using was our sleeping bags, it was really hot at night and sleeping bags were useless.our sleeping bag liners were plenty enough for a May paddling trip in the Keys.
I’d like to find a skirt for my Sea Eagle 393RL like you have on yours. Where do you suggest getting one? I don’t see any on the Sea Eagle website. Thank you. I enjoyed your video. I’d like to paddle that one day.
I had to make a custom deck to fit the razor lite. You'll find a video of it on our youtube channel, the last video posted is about making the deck!

Yes we did. It was not too bad except for one night. As soon as the sun went down, there were thousands of them everywhere.
It was hot and humid and no way to open the vents without risking an invasion. And we had hundreds of them already inside from just getting in and out of the tent.
And that was the night we had a huge thunderstorm with high winds and lightnings everywhere.
Worst night of our life for sure!
Wow what am amazing trip! I use an inflatable kayak too and love to see other inflatable kayakers out there. What is that app that you used to track your trip?
Thank you, inflatable kayaks are great! You can't beat how convenient they are. We used Boating HD to plan and track our trip. But it comes with an annual subscription to get the nautical charts, I think it's around 20$ a year. Definitely worth it for a trip like this. You can monitor depths, tide, tidal currents and weather if you have service.

No we did not, we thought about bringing a speargun because we are really into spearfishing but decided against it, space was really limited on the kayak. and we did not know the regulations nor did we have a Florida fishing license.

It was a great trip! We'd definitely recommend it! We listed all the places we stopped in the description, that'll give you a first idea of the route we took. If you need more info, email us at: fartherout.ls@gmail.com, we can send you the places we stayed/camped at, which side (gulf or ocean) we kayaked for each leg of the trip and some general recommendations.
How much weight in supplies & water did you carry? How much water per day per person did you plan for?
Not sure about the total weight, the kayak itself weights about 50lbs empty, and we could not really lift it when full, so I'd say at least 100lbs of gear, water and food.
We had 3.5L of water per person per day (drinking, cooking and cleaning)
We planned everything to be able to refill every two days. So we were carrying 14L of water.
We would usually arrive at the next filling point with 2 to 3L left.

I find OJ and water a big must have to prevent dehydration which can ruin a trip with being irritable from being in the state. I drank a gallon of OJ when I came back from my first trip. Like my friend said: drink even when you feel full.

Yes! Razorlite 473rl. It is a great boat!! It's been more than 5 years and a lot of miles, and it is still going strong!

I've never tried the 393rl, so it's hard to say.
I think that without a deck, kayaking in the Keys is probably not a good idea as you would take a lot of water in because of waves.
If you're able to make a deck, then it will depend on how many miles you are able to paddle per day, and in what sea state you can paddle. I find wind to be the worst element for inflatable kayaks.
Best is to try paddling long distances in different conditions and see how you feel.

If you are kayaking for 9 days ... where do you guys sleep ?
A combination of hotels and campsites.
Did y'all rent a kayak for this trip? Weighing the cost of transporting mine v. renting one locally.
We used an inflatable kayak. Transportation was not an issue for us. But the next time we're going for a long distance kayaking trip, we will probably rent sea kayaks (after getting the proper training for them)
Florida Bay outfitters helped us a lot and I know they rent sea kayaks if you choose the renting option. They changed owners recently but I'm sure they are still great.

@@MastiKaHathi wildlife attacks are pretty rare on kayaks even in Florida. We were not really concerned about that. Though an inflatable would clearly not be best if it happened.
I'd say that the biggest problem with inflatables is the wind. They float higher on the water and are pretty sensitive to wind.
You could end up enable to come back to shore if the wind picks up to much.
We monitored the forecast all the time.
We use the boating hd app. You just need to buy the nautical charts once for the US and you can use the app forever 😊

You'd need to get a yearly subscription to get access to the depth chart of a world region. I think it was 20$ for a year for all USA depth charts ( lake and rivers included)
Definitely worth it for a big trip or if you sail/kayak a lot.
