- Reefer Shipping Containers: Why They Are Useful For Modifications.
There are three different refrigerator containers: 53’ reefer container, 20ft reefer container, and 40 ft reefer container. These refrigerated containers are a low-cost alternative for customers since it is already insulated.
These shipping containers are great to modify for container homes, offices, hunting shack cabins, air compressors, tool cribs, master control rooms, etc.
I will explain why 53’ refrigerated containers are the best option for your next container modification project.

Love what you do, just wanted to let you know that the reefer config is an amazing solution for cold weather applications because the floor is perfect for the installation of in floor heated liquid flooring, it works amazingly and there amount of worked saved by the native T floor is unbelievable!! Cheers
I'm looking for an older 20-32' reefer that the compressor doesn't wok so I can convert it into a cold storage room/butcher shop using a coolbot. I found a 48' this week in Columbus Ohio I have to go look at next week. A little larger than I wanted... but I think it will work!?
Very informative as usual. Thanks for sharing 😁👍
Who DOESN’T love a good reefer at the end of a long, hard day at work, ammirite?!? Three cheers for reefer! 😂😂😂 #RollEmIfYaGotEm
What would it cost to have a 53 ft reefer converted to a small house with kitchen and bath? Do you have samples?
Thanks for the videos, please make a video about windows, doors, and frames and ways to install them specifically on refers. No video about it yet on youtube that I know of.
Sounds good. We might be building a gym for the police out of a 53' ex-reefer with all of the above and I'll make sure the film crew covers it. We have an inexpensive & easy to install framing kit for windows on reefers. We typically use the same man door that I have posted a video on already. If you need something asap, send us an e-mail and I can help out. Stay tuned. Better stuff to come shortly.
@@TheContainerGuyTV looking forward :) great informative videos
Yes that would be very helpful
Can you put 2 of the 53 foot insolated trailers side by side and cut the walls out to join them together as one big room but have a load baring ceiling joice with posts holding up the walls that were cut away. Also do you ship to Canada 🇨🇦?
What is the R-value of a reefer shipping container?
Thanks for the info! Take care

@@TheContainerGuyTVOkay. Might as well. I’ve already been binging on your channel because I am interested in the tiny home movement and would like to one day tackle a conversion of my own. Lol! Love all the ideas, tips and general info and especially nice that you are also in Canada (I’m in Ottawa, Ontario myself) which in some cases can be a real bonus in terms of relevancy to any instances where there might be specific issues and/or challenges we could possibly encounter or have to mitigate/consider in regards to converting a container into something legitimately useful depending upon the specific challenges that can come with doing so. All jokes and silliness aside (I’m referring to myself) I am grateful for your experience and willingness to share your extensive knowledge. Thank you and God bless
Sir good video Need to more information on the reefer container Sir
You mentioned about not screwing conduit and such directly to the FRP, is there some type of wall stud on the inside that can be used for mounting purposes?
When you cut holes for windows and doors, is there any type of structural reinforcement that needs to be applied or is that not necessary since the entire wall is a structural component due to being completely filled already?
Sorry if the questions seem weird but I am considering using a reefer truck body as the base of an overland camping rig for the reasons you mentioned in your video. They are already finished and fully insulated on the inside, and I would just need to add windows. My concern with cutting window holes was that it would weaken the wall structure and need to be framed somehow.
The t-floor looks like it already provides areas for cable runs and mounting points for cabinets, etc that would otherwise need to be added in a regular van, etc when doing the conversion.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Thinking of getting one of these for my office. Would this type of container survive hurricane force winds like the all-steel ones do?
Hi. just wondering which paint on coating to use on interior plastic or fibreglass? Iv got one with a blue interior lining. Thanks.
Hi I would like to know, what is the white coating on the internal skin of a refrigerated shipping container ? I will highly appreciate. Thank you
Great vid thx
I need to see steel walled reefer conversion
Hello. Just a question regarding the doors in a reefer container, do you use them in any way as part of windows or any architectural detail? thank you
I am thinking about using a reefer container for a beer cooler for a restaurant setting. Can the refrigeration be used that comes with the container? thanks
Would it be possible for you to install the 240/408v unit onto a 53ft container?
I have a 40’ reefer with the back unit removed. What would you recommend to recap it? I am thinking of putting sheet metal on the back and wood frame with insulation, then some plywood on the inside.
We use cut-outs from other reefer mods. Assuming you don't have that, if you do sheet metal on the outside, tight fitting 2" rigid foam, then finish the interior however you please. Foam is the important part. The inside and outside finish is up to you. Don't frame with wood unless you're framing a false wall inside of the 2" rigid foam.
I’m putting 2 window units on that wall. Should I use something else?
@@BigMikeWin I would frame on the other side of the rigid foam then install your windows against the foam and use 3.5" screws through the nailing flange of the window into the studs. Keep a constant foam air barrier.
Thanks!
I'm planning to take my end plate and reinstall upside down after all the sheet metal/reefer components removed. This would give me a good solid frame and support for a bay window.
Hey Channing Thanks for your videos. we are looking at making a home out of a fibreglass truck trailer which is 45 foot long here in Australia could you please have suggestions on building putting windows in a fibreglass exterior cheers from Paul and Monique in Australia
Hello. If you send me an email to mods@thecontainerguy.ca, I'll send you some pictures of a window flashing we use for aluminum insulated reefers. We actually have a few kits in stock and they fit in a slender box. If you're okay with 40" wide by 30" tall windows, we could ship them to you. If you already have windows then you could get your own made locally.
Can you utilize the aluminum floor as a good conductive transfer basis for radiant floor heating?
That's an amazing idea. There's 3.5" of foam underneath so no worry about heat loss below and PEX lines would fit perfectly in the aluminum T-slot floor. Would be cool to pour a concrete slab on top. I want to try this.
Thanks for the great video. I'm wondering how watertight those riveted exterior sidings are. Are they just riveted or there is some sort of caulking in the riveted joints?
They're made from Steele correct?
Like what apt.buildings are created from?
How easy , simple is that to build with?
How can you saw thru the aluminum struts that are embedded in the foam without cutting into the exterior aluminum to leave a lip for screwing the infill panels in the refer unit hole?
Is it possible for you to swap the refrigerator module from a 40 foot container onto the 53 foot container? On that note what is the truss on the ends of some of those containers?
What is the general current approximate price range?
would love to know your about your experience in connecting two reefer containers
Do you think a reefer is better for my application? I want to use the container to house tropical fish that I breed. The container company I'm dealing with recommended a Reefer as it would be cheaper then insulating / framing a standard 40hc and already setup for how I'd like it used. Since there isn't much information on this particular use I've been following house / office builds. While the reefer may not look as nice it seems like it might actually be more practical. My only real concerns going with a reefer is it's designed to be more air tight so less air flow and of course a used reefer may not look as nice as a 1 trip container but can always spend a little and fix it up aesthetically. Thanks for your time. Been watching lots of your videos.
Yup. Ex-reefers are 100% the way to go. We had a company from the states reach out and wanted to use 53' ex reefers for oysters. Will save you a lot of money.
@@TheContainerGuyTV what is the highest R-value that you have?
Also, what are the largest freezer containers you have? I have seen that they are rarely made but available I 53' and even 60' and as wide as 12' custom order.
Hi question about reefer floor, I have a bouncy area that seems to have gotten worse or perhaps it's just because I'm finally finishing all the modifications to it. I plan on keeping the floor as is but a section that's maybe 4x8 feet is really really bouncy. The rest of the floor is fine. What would be the easiest way to fix this? The container is sitting on 4 heavy duty concrete blocks that rest on several truckloads of professionally compacted gravel. It's just barely off the ground and after sitting through last winter / spring / summer still seems to be level.
I'm not keen on any kind of welding so the 2 ideas I have are trying to add in some screws to secure what has come loose, or more drastically pour concrete between the gaps and effectively make the floor in that area concrete. You probably have better ideas. Thanks for your time!
Have you cut holes in the side of the container? Could be floor sag.
Sometimes the aluminum floor delaminates from the foam below. This could be because the container was tweaked at some point in its life. We've been lucky in the past sometimes with driving long self-tapping screws through the aluminum floor, the foam, and into the cross members. Sometimes we've been not so lucky..
@@TheContainerGuyTV yes it’s actually near the man door but that’s the only big hole. Other holes are just power and water and I plan on adding 2 vents. No windows. There isn’t a lot of weight inside yet. I’ll try the long screws first since that is a relatively easy and also inexpensive thing to try. Thanks for your insight.
@@captivebredcanada if it's near the man door, that could be the problem. Because the opening going down to the base of the container weakens it a lot. Are you using one of our door steel frames? Try putting a jack under the door frame (the side with the longest stretch to the next corner post) and see if the bounciness goes away. If the jack fixes it, then the door opening needs more reinforcement. Try this before screws.
Maybe someone can help me here. Can the FRP panels be removed? I’m looking to put a sauna in one of these but I don’t want the heat to cause any fumes/issues with the FRP. If not, is there a sure way to stop the heat from reaching the panels if I leave them in place? What kind of insulation would I have to put in? Cheers
Brand new enquirer. Are REEFER units as sturdy as Regular containers?
They will be sturdier than a GP cont. The external skin is attached to the frame as is the internal skin = twice as much skin tension/strength + the high density foam also provides rigidity.
Do you sell 20' ISO side-open, refurbished, insulated containers (ex-reefer)? Do you deliver to Michigan?
i would also like to know the density of the PUF used for shipping containers. is 2 inch foam is enough for minus temperatures?
2lb closed cell. Our two container offices on site have 2" of foam on the walls, 3" on the ceiling and they were cozy today in -40 celsius. Floors also have 2".
What would a 20' refer container cost a person Shipped to Bridgeport IL 62417 ?
Hi great and very helpful video. can you answer a question please? looking to buy a second hand reefer with machinery attached (40 ft with 3 phase electric power unit still attached (40 ft) does the ribbed metal floor in your video work fine with a single pedestrian pallet manual pump unit (meaning try smallest unit for moving IBC's) or will the wheels drop down in to the groves? Thanks in advance? (ps pretty new to this) , thanks.
The aluminum T-Slot floor is designed for pallet jacks. They still maneuver around great on it. You're good to go!
@@TheContainerGuyTV thanks very much appreciate your reply!! Thank you! Have a great day!!
@@richardnoel3141 I have 40ft thermo king reefer units for sale! Working condition or just the insulated box. Let me know if you would like to inquire. I am in Pennsylvania.
@@kylemiller1054I need more info, what can you tell me/send me a way to find your website?
This is very informative. Thank you. Is it possible to swap a 40ft integrated reefer unit into a 53ft reefer container?
This video tells nothing about the foundation. What kind of foundation can I do if I want this to be an off truck stand alone office? Thanks Container guy!
I have to move a ground level, stationary 15 foot reefer body on Friday to another location with a flatbed tow truck. Any advice greatly appreciated. I think it is on steel rails.
Soooo, I clicked on this video for the wrong reason. Lol
Gotcha!
@@TheContainerGuyTV Hello Sir, thank you so much for the overview...love these containers. I have 2, 40' High cube Reefer contianers...and as has been stated before would really love to see how you guys are putting windows and even sliding glass doors in these. I think many people would love to see that as it is not covered anywhere on the net for these specific types of containers. Thank you for all you do and really enjoy your content.
