This is pretty spot on! But my Schip is GREAT with kids, even really little ones, and has very low prey drive. They're great dogs, but be ready for a lot of personality in a small package!

My Schipp is great with little Kids and Kids he knows (to behave). But with overagitated, malicious, strange Kids in an age they KNOW what they are doing or where they are directing their energy at- he is totally on guard all the time and does not want them close to him.. in case they target him with their chasing/thrashing/yelling and all this "weird" childish things ;) Almost like a cranky babbit yelling: "walk straight, no screaming, no hitting things with sticks, stop fiddeling about... BEHAVE and be quiet, I want to read my newspaper(bush) in peace!"

Hunting behaviour is obviously highly individual as well as "barking" and as almost everything mainly a reaction to how the owner behaves. For example: my Schipp is the most quiet dog I ever had (only barks at doorbell or bad guys/dogs at the garden fence) because we always react (positively e.g. "good boy, that's just the neighbours") even to his twisting of the ears and a low "uff" of mentioning, that he heard something noteworhty. Also he would never touch or bite a small animal- he seems totally disgusted by mice and does never hunt them or dig them up, he is even fine watching squirrels hop through our garden right before his nose, so it's no "instinct" to brainlessly chase anything that moves (but you can train a Schipp to become a no-brainer by throwing balls to fetch). On the other hand, he is a very capable "big game hunter"- his sense of smell is incredible and every trail from fox to roedeer, raindeer or moose is shure to be found by him. Also the "activity level" is just, what you train the dog to do- we hike a lot, do Agility and Mantrailing.. but molsty just once per week. And all the rest of the time he blissfully sleeps off his adventures and is most happy with lazy sniffing walks, where you can only constantly be amazed about what he finds (tracks, cats, holes in fences, walnuts to crack...). Hope he lives another 15 years- with his grey mussle and his proud stance- changing quickly to the most funny, playful wild goblin ever known he is our perfect companion on all our travels. He loves all our good friends and does not care for anybody else.. a truely loyal friend and a mutch better judge of character than I.

Genetics make a breed, and the fact these dogs were genetically selected to have a high prey drive just showsn that´s not something that´s only dependent on the owner´s reaction. All animals even of the same breed are individuals so certain drives may vary in intensity but all in all certain drives are what define a breed to some degree. So no it´s not all down to the proper training.
Both proper training and a certain acceptance for what the dog was initially bred to do ("reporting" strangers, hunting vermin) make the mix I believe.
I´m not meaning to preach this in a negative way. I just think it´s important to recognize both the meaning of proper training and genetics.

Fact 11 : correct pronunciation. It's not schipperkEE but SCHIpperke. The "sch" at the beginning is not pronounced as "sk" or "sh" but as the Dutch "sch" which almost no non-native Dutch speaker can master.

I have had two Schipperkes. My oldest I had to put down in January. He was almost 17 1/2. He shared most of these 10 traits. I have another Schipperke who will be 7 in December. He saved kat of these traits as well but he is good with kids, little and big. He also doesn't take off out of the yard very often. He's very affectionate.

What about a dog, there is a breed called Schipperke pronounced Skipperkee. They are very good with children & protect the children. They are very smart dogs & they learn many many things if you teach them. I had one when I was 3years old it lived to time I was about 20. Great unknown dogs, they are about 16 inches high at shoulders. Look them up.

I met a schipperke puppy (owned by my friend) as i had rehomed a giant golden doodle - they were both puppies together - the schipperke's first owner, my good friend. However she failed to train, or even try to train her. However given the schipperke's (Pearl) owner dying, I inherited Pearl, the Schipperke, who turned out to be willful, but easily trained to walk without leash in a mini city, cam when called after a time when she decided when she would come or not (but ultimately she came). She loved children and neighbots, although never hung around for affection (she just seemed to want to "say" hi - I like you -bye.... When encountering aggressive children or canines (or cats) she just moved away - not interested in fighting or being aggressive - just wanted to do her thing. She quickly learned to wait at crosswalks, until I arrived and said "ok" even when i crossed before her. - when she got the OKAY she crossed. I also did this with food.....and treats.....(never punishing her except for withdrawal or a clear "no.."
She truley was willful - and did her thing, but was easily trained (as long as one did not expect an immediate response- but she learned what not to do - and never just ran away even in my neighborhood - she had a safe route, greeted neighbors and came home......training with love and affirmation yet using "NO" firmly leads me to believe (perhaps unrealistically) that most dogs can be trained - while acknowledging some of their breed traits, unless they are mutts then one just has to see what works...and maybe that's true for every dog, cat, horse, child etc. Schipperke's just need consistent, clear, positive training. And Yes, at least the one I knew, was fearless, curious, protective, but not a snuggler, but a true pal. She is missed......but had a long, adventurous, happy, loved life. May we all be so lucky!

I had 3 growing up. We had to line out entire backyard with bricks to stop them escaping. Also if you live in warm climates you sometimes need to brush daily. During summer it was always around 30 Celsius and so much shedding. Also found that some heartworm tablets aren't schipperke friendly so research first (unfortunately my first one passed away due to this).

Our Schip has a very high prey drive. She killed a few bunnies yesterday...then a 5 foot garden snake came onto the scene to eat one of the bunnies whole. Ug. She was fearful at first. 6 weeks of training later, she mastered sit, stay, down, place, and come. Very funny dog. Very funny.

My Skipper is almost 20 yrs old. He is not losing interest in eating, but is losing weight, because I can feel his spine as prominent. Any suggestions as to what to feed him to help him gain his weight back? The breeder I got him from suggests Ensure for weight gain and Pedialyte for good hydration. I usually give him small portions of ground meat: beef, turkey, chicken, chicken liver, with carrot, sweet potatoes, Turmeric (cooked, all blended) with a little ginger tea thrown in . Vitamin E

You could try to add pure, powdered fat (e.g. from cattle), as fat ist a very improtant energy source for dogs
Also try to pimp up carbohydrates, as they are good for feeling good (Support the uptake of Tryptophan) and make gaining weight easier. I often add porredge or potato, even hard bread he loves. Good luck for your Oldie!

Had a schipperke for 13 years-it’s reasonably similar to a Jack Russell or other small terrier bark. They tend to be on the bark-happy side, though this depends of course on the individual and the training. Notably they also have a lot of other vocalizations like howls and “yodels” and little growls that they use to communicate to a greater degree than many other breeds. My dog knew my name and if my mother was calling me, she’d come find me to alert me/reveal my location to mom by using a yodel that approximated the sound of my name.
