Nearly 40 year old battle hardened Scotsman here and I cannot listen to this woman without goosebumps and tears in my eyes - she speaks to my heart and old soul. Reminds me of listening to old school music with my late Grandma. Never in the history of Grammys has one been so richly deserved. I want her to write a musical with Sara Bareilles and turn us all into weeping human goosebumps. What a talent ❤🥹😭
I'm a 75 year old male who just heard this vocalist for the first time....and found myself sobbing, like others here. As a musician, my emotions are stirred by music. But I wasn't expecting this reaction. I am amazed by the multitudes of super talented individuals like her who can touch our hearts as well as our souls.
@@ashlyn888 The rhythm/style she plays on guitar during the first song is called bossa nova, and it can be very difficult for some people to sing while maintaining that rhythm because your hands and mouth are generally moving out of step with each other.
My god. Heard her today for the first time. I was in the library and came over "Let You Break My Heart Again". Ended up in sobbing, so I had to run to the toilet. And for information, I’m a 6’4 metalhead covered in tattoos, bet It looked very weird 😂 She is amazing, and also really beautiful. Love from a fellow scandinavian in Norway.
She says in the beginning "it hurts to be something, but it's worse to be nothing", I didn't understand until hearing the song through, but her music just makes you understand. Such a special talent, wow.
I play the cello too and I have to say you did a wonderful job. You could instantly recognised that it was a top-class quartet from the amazing blend and precision.
I was happily surprised when I clicked on this video as I did not expect to see you in this ensemble! Your cover of Super Rich Kids is one of my all time favourites :) Thanks for a beautiful performance !
Nice to see you on tiny desk, as a ebass player, you made me want to buy a cello just to get the sound you have when you hold it like a bass guitar in your vids.
its insane hearing this then the songs on the album through hifi setup at home. Tiny desk sounds 5 times better its ridiculous. Why cant studios just record raw like this.
We, the fans, request you to write a Broadway musical. The writing on "California and Me" reminds me of Rogers & Hammerstein's romantic songs, and the Phantom of the Opera. This woman is incredible. Love the piano arrangements.
I’m 70, and grew up hearing music in a time when it was easy to find original songs, often written by the artists that sang them, that I found enjoyable in many ways: Lyrics telling a relatable story Melodies impossible to forget Harmonies, rythyms, and music riffs that conveyed or sustained the emotion Many such songs. Every year. But for the last 30 or so years, few popular songs have been even close. Hence when you tube recommended this new popular artists’ video to me, I couldn't have been more skeptical. But I was pleasantly surprised. Not only does Laufey sing and play as well many of those I remember, she can also write original songs that I find just as enjoyable as those written 60+ years ago.
I’m your age and I hope you realise there are so many singer songwriters today who write and perform incredible music. It’s really a sign of thinking “old” to look back at days past as better than what’s happening since you were 25.
This is the first time I've heard of Laufey. I feel like I'm transported back to a bittersweet nostalgia, where you play back your regrets and there is an inevitability to the ending, yet you long and yearn for something different. Wistful.
I heard this a week ago and have played it so many times since and have been going on a deep dive with the rest of her catalogue since. Her songs sound so cinematic painting visuals like they're straight out of a classical musical - elegant, ethereal, beautiful and timeless. The world would be a better place with her in musical.

My god, she is good. She wields her voice so firmly; such impeccable control. Love the tone and timbre of her voice as well. She makes jazz accessible with pop and Bossa Nova influences, and she seems like such a sweet and enthusiastic individual.
This is lovely music, and the songs resemble the old time pop songs that jazz artists used for inspiration, but this is not jazz. For example, there is no improvising.

As someone that obtained a masters in classical vocal performance that now *mostly* listens to rap, I can honestly say that (at least to my knowledge) Laufey is one of the most proficient and talented songwriters I’ve seen in a hot minute. Her nods to composers/older songwriters are put through her own unique creative voice (and her actual singing voice!) in a way that’s hard to find-what could be pastiche, derivative or archaic is just another very worthy addition to a bigger canon of well measures pieces. TL;DR Great stuff!

I hadn't known her before this Tiny Desk version popped up in my playlist and I bawled my eyes out for the entire concert. She knocked me off my socks completely and I guess I'm a fan now. ❤
You guys dont realize how clean someone's voice has to be to be that closely mic'd and sound that way. It's engineered, levelsd live but no matter how much post-production you do to clean up anything, the voice won't sound this pristine without it truly being that clean to begin with. Yup
I'm 5 hours deep in this NPR Tiny Desk Concert hole and I can't climb out!. It's like I'm listening to every artist I love anew again! Started from Chappell Roan and now im here!

I "discovered" Laufey when I was looking for jazz songs that I can learn to play in ukulele. Her cover of The Nearness Of You was immaculate. So was her I love You For Sentimental Reasons. Rooted for her and now she has a Grammy!! 🎉
I am happily married, and Promise's lyrics can't relate with anything in my life, but it made me cry so hard, like I was missing somebody who doesn't exist.
I really appreciate how Tiny Desk allows us to experience these songs we love in a completely different way. Laufey doesn't really get to showcase her accompanying herself much either! Her piano skills are really impressive, and in combination with the strings it becomes something truly beautiful.
I am so emotional while listening to this. I feel like a romantic, sad, feminine ballerina dancing on an ice rink on her own, holding startdust memories of someone else.
she’s such a good performer, her vocal control, her guitar playing , and the band/quartet are so tight too. wished there were more trained musicians in this realm of mainstream.
there's something so ethereal about her music, her singing voice being so raspy and classy, there's such a nostalgic feeling. everyone in this is so talented.
That display of raw emotions at Promise, (9:10) is crazy, I felt her energy, it was like she traveled back in time to those feelings and sung her heart out, when the song ended, it's like she woke back up and was at the Tiny desk concert again. That was insane, I have become a new fan!
This is the hardest ive cried in months. Laufeys music always seems to affect me in ways i dont understand. It has gotten me through the roughest times, comforted me when I felt lost and alone. I dont think ive ever felt so deeply about anything in my life. I know almost every song of hers by heart. Its as if her music gave me something ive been searching for most of my life. It might sound dramatic, but i mean it with every cell of my being.
The casual listener can't possibly understand how incredibly difficult it is for someone to both sing with that level of beauty and accompany themselves on a variety of instruments! She is a world class performer!
what an oddly demeaning, gatekeeping thing to bring to an otherwise lovely environment. We can appreciate an artist and their skill without insulting others. I dare say that a lot of people probably good grasp the complexity of her performance, and even if not, it can be pointed out in a better way.
@@Hamuelin😂 I thought it was obvious, but I in no way shape or form, was intending to put down anyone. I hope you realize that not everyone can appreciate a musicians skill as much as a fellow musician can.

I am not superfan of jazzy songs but I am a fan of Music and Musicians! Thank you NPR Music and Tiny Desk from bringing her here! LOVE IT! She totally deserve it! and more! Keep singing, keep creating, keep inspiring! This world need it!

I think I need to give the biggest applause to Laufey's parents for encouraging her gift in music. Then to Laufey!! Wow lady!!! You are a true timeless masterpiece of art. Thank you
I've recently heard about a "Laufey" but this is the 1st time I've HEARD Laufey. Clearly talented, with a voice and muscial style that is a throwback to times long ago, such as the crooners, torch songs and show tunes of the 40's, 50's and even the 60's. A refreshing change from the slick and over-produced schlock that passes for Pop Music. Cheers!
I feel like this is definitely the kind of setting where her voice shines the most. Very minimalistic arrangement, personal, intimate...beautiful! Bravo!
Her voice is truly captivating and generates goosebumps--- Promise did that to me--- She's Magic and we need her now!!! Phrasing and musicianship are effortless--- elegantly captured and sounding gorgeous as always!!!!! This is a treat for our ears!!! Thank you Tiny desk!

As a 20 years old girl who has been listening to jazz ever since she was a child, seeing the attention that Laufey is receiving makes me sooooooooo happy and hopeful.

@@AQiPEm I KNOW RIGHTT WHERES HER SISTERRR TT TT
I hadn't known her before this Tiny Desk version popped up in my playlist and I bawled my eyes out for the entire concert. She knocked me off my socks completely and I guess I'm a fan now. ❤
Exactly! Wow just wow!
facts@@frhmlyes
I also
Same 🥰
I found her about 3 months ago, so here I am. Good stuff.
Found her music by accident and I'm absolutely hypnotized by her voice. Every song was filled with emotion and memories.
You guys dont realize how clean someone's voice has to be to be that closely mic'd and sound that way. It's engineered, levelsd live but no matter how much post-production you do to clean up anything, the voice won't sound this pristine without it truly being that clean to begin with. Yup
Heard that in a voice thousands of times before. She is really good though
@@rdumorne1dude what’s your problem she’s incredible why are you leaving negative comments everywhere
Lots and lots of practice and hard work and a little bit of genealogy, but yeah, that's voice control at its finest
It's called "classical music training" :) But yeah, it requires a lot of work.
What does a clean voice mean?
I'm 5 hours deep in this NPR Tiny Desk Concert hole and I can't climb out!. It's like I'm listening to every artist I love anew again! Started from Chappell Roan and now im here!
Doing the same because of this
very talented artists in this generation
Lols same

I love you for this

i wish they played a song from a different album like typical of me or even her christmas album :(
@@letti4285 I feel like they recorded this before she released the Christmas album though

9:10 Promise

Thank you❤
I "discovered" Laufey when I was looking for jazz songs that I can learn to play in ukulele. Her cover of The Nearness Of You was immaculate. So was her I love You For Sentimental Reasons. Rooted for her and now she has a Grammy!! 🎉
This is a beautiful Tiny Desk. Big shoutout to the strings, too - Sherri, Josh, Aria, and Ken - lovely playing!
Eh. It's ok.
I am happily married, and Promise's lyrics can't relate with anything in my life, but it made me cry so hard, like I was missing somebody who doesn't exist.
Oh man, I can't stop hearing her music since a couple of months, she's just amazing 👏🏽🙌🏽🫶🏽
I really appreciate how Tiny Desk allows us to experience these songs we love in a completely different way. Laufey doesn't really get to showcase her accompanying herself much either! Her piano skills are really impressive, and in combination with the strings it becomes something truly beautiful.
W for real shes dope One collab i really wanna see is Her and Borns :)
Laufey sounds like a Christmas Morning. Thank u Tiny Desk for this early christmas present ❤❤
I am so emotional while listening to this. I feel like a romantic, sad, feminine ballerina dancing on an ice rink on her own, holding startdust memories of someone else.
she’s such a good performer, her vocal control, her guitar playing , and the band/quartet are so tight too. wished there were more trained musicians in this realm of mainstream.
such a beautiful voice, she's gonna be a modern legend
steady on there chief
Agreed! She’s gonna be in the books. I study jazz in university and my professors feel similarly lol they all really like her
I mean, she is really good, but its not like she is an innovater. This style is just a copy of what was popular in the 50-60s.
@@stijn8588 Yes. Her music has made it into pop as a “window” into vintage jazz and bossa nova. Which is still pretty awesome!
@@ellemfae i guess, but i kinda hate the fact that she is now seen as this saviour of jazz etc. When she barely scratches the surface of jazz.
there's something so ethereal about her music, her singing voice being so raspy and classy, there's such a nostalgic feeling. everyone in this is so talented.
The way I gasped in excitement when I saw this on my feed!! My new favourite tiny desk concert🥰
Indeed, some artists you know belong in this setting. This is the perfect artist for a small intimate setting like this.
That display of raw emotions at Promise, (9:10) is crazy, I felt her energy, it was like she traveled back in time to those feelings and sung her heart out, when the song ended, it's like she woke back up and was at the Tiny desk concert again. That was insane, I have become a new fan!
W amazing she was so good I hope Borns and her collab one day :)
Right!!!!!❤
Heartbreaking from the very first key - the emotion, the subtle eye gestures, the gentle playing for such a heartbreaking song
12:07 caught me off guard
This is the hardest ive cried in months. Laufeys music always seems to affect me in ways i dont understand. It has gotten me through the roughest times, comforted me when I felt lost and alone. I dont think ive ever felt so deeply about anything in my life. I know almost every song of hers by heart. Its as if her music gave me something ive been searching for most of my life. It might sound dramatic, but i mean it with every cell of my being.
Snowflake.
round of applause for the sound engineers and sound people knocking it out the park again💥👏🏼
❤
The sheer amount of talent this entire performance brings is absolutely beyond. Instantly one of the best tiny desks ever.
The string quartet, her vocals, piano playing and guitar?!?!! so unreal this is amazing
Princess, please!
This just instantly feels "comfortable". What a great sound, clear as day, without vinyl cracking. The musical style still holds up.
The casual listener can't possibly understand how incredibly difficult it is for someone to both sing with that level of beauty and accompany themselves on a variety of instruments! She is a world class performer!
Absolutely. By the way, was the piano out of tune? The 2nd song had a distinct sound to it.
@@Ciruelatron Its supposed to sound this way!
what an oddly demeaning, gatekeeping thing to bring to an otherwise lovely environment. We can appreciate an artist and their skill without insulting others.
I dare say that a lot of people probably good grasp the complexity of her performance, and even if not, it can be pointed out in a better way.
@@Hamuelincalm down
@@Hamuelin😂 I thought it was obvious, but I in no way shape or form, was intending to put down anyone. I hope you realize that not everyone can appreciate a musicians skill as much as a fellow musician can.
This is amazing. I saw Laufey's growth over the years. Start with some covers, then originals, then bigger concerts, more fans. Totally admire her process. I am not superfan of jazzy songs but I am a fan of Music and Musicians! Thank you NPR Music and Tiny Desk from bringing her here! LOVE IT!
She totally deserve it! and more!
Keep singing, keep creating, keep inspiring! This world need it!
W shes really done amazing for herself I hope one day her and another fav artist borns can collab :)
You have nailed my sentiment..thank you

wow, she has such a magical voice, with absolutely gorgeous accompaniment. her music evokes soft light, fantasy, romance, and heartbreak in the most beautiful way. i'm in awe.
That vibrato is perfect
My poor phone could barely handle it.
I'm so happy that prepared and studied musicians are reclaiming the place THEY DESERVE in the music world and are having success 😭 you're magneficent Layfey!! Can't wait to see you performing live ❤
Bravo!
I still can't believe this is free!
Make a donation to NPR then 😉 👍
Her voice is reminiscent of old musicals.......and amazing!
Her voice is like drinking brandy in a smoky Jazz speakeasy during Prohibition. Unbelievably good 🥹
My new favourite Artist. Love her sound and song writing. When you're excellent and your performance is effortless it shows how hardworking she is.
From the covid times to the global stage now.. what a journey. Her undeniable talent is more than deserving of this spotlight 🎉
Her phrasing is absolutely beautiful. That's real classical training
ive never heard of her, and im in tears while looking at the lyrics
The audacity of Laufey being cute even saying “BLAH BLAH BLAH” 🥰
Jesus Christ..... stop it.
You don’t know what audacity means
Isnt that apart of the lyrics..?
Her voice is truly captivating and generates goosebumps--- Promise did that to me--- She's Magic and we need her now!!! Phrasing and musicianship are effortless--- elegantly captured and sounding gorgeous as always!!!!! This is a treat for our ears!!! Thank you Tiny desk!
In this new era, having a gem like her has truly blessed our generation ❤
I discovered her today on the radio and... I'm in awe. I don't want to stop listening to her.
Laufey, you're incredible. It feels so long since I like someone's set the way I LOVE this.
Hii, which radio station did you discover her on? Looking for a good radio to listen to :)
I couldn't get enough of her songs -- lyrics are contemporary, fresh and relateable, but her genre is timeless.
As a 20 years old girl who has been listening to jazz ever since she was a child, seeing the attention that Laufey is receiving makes me sooooooooo happy and hopeful.
The improvisation in jazz is a testament to the musicians' creativity and skill
Such a beautiful voice 😊. I've listened to Laufey's songs during the past few months and seeing her perfoming live at Tiny Desk is such a treat. I've had teary eyes during Promise 😢. I'd love to see her live one day :).
Same lol wanna go together,I'm willing to spend all of my money just to watch her live
I can't believe that anyone could leave her 😢. Her songs bring me back to a time where you actually listened to the words and heard the story.
that one violin player who always looks in awe of the beautiful music she is making! 10/10
i think you're referring to the viola player on the very right
she's locked in alright.
