Hi Dacob..I worked for Tiffany&Co at the 5th Ave store as a summer job in the office in said bldg. My dad knew the guard at the delivery entrance back then...As a teenager i always felt welcomed on all the floors as i would "window shop" ..They were kind to the staff and gave a 30% discount to employees..a perk..and It seemed from observing sales interactions on my breaks/lunch...all customers seem to be well taken care of. I do remember the no diamond jewelry for men situation..At that time the jewelry design department was upstairs where the designers and jewelers/and watch making and repair people were working..I had witnessed neck pieces being set and i was shown the design plan renderings and the selection of jewels to be set..which matched up w/the design rendering...I did take advantage of the 30% discount on some china/silver and crystal pieces..I can only say as an employee i felt welcomed to be there...I would say that Im not a timid person so maybe i didnt feel some of the negatives that are mentioned.. I appreciate and enjoy your content ..you take your work seriously and w/great humor....Curiosity and Love are the best message that you deliver....Thanks, Bob
Thank you so much Bob for your wonderful comment. 💖 lets not forget that when you worked for Tiffany, the company was not yet owned by LVMH… those were different times. And in my humble opinion, given the current situation and ownership of Tiffany&Co., if Truman Capote were alive today, his breakfast might not have been at Tiffany’s… 😉
I understand..just a little time capsule comment..lol I dont buy apparel from lux brands generally..mostly home goods and fragrance..We have to "fer-it" out the good stuff and not be taken in by hype...Sending hugs...Bob
I would love to have had a job like that! Just the learning experience! ❤
If my money isn't good enough, then I just move on.
They are targeting people with low self esteem 😂😂😂
Who else here is over it? If luxury is a hassle, it's not luxury.
In many ways it's the pressure on sales people to make sales. They want the high end cashed up customers not the aspirationals they make snap decisions about who you are.
My fav story is where Hermès denied entry to Oprah Winfrey to one of their stores in Roma, OMG!!!!
Big mistake. Very Big Mistake.
Huge!
Thats actually not the real story. It was closing time and Oprah demanded to being let in acting all entitled. Don’t you know who I am blablablabla stuff.
With all the shady and entitled stuff coming out about her, I wouldn’t use her as an example tbh.
@tuttuttut7758 Yes! Thank you for this! I am so sick of how the Oprah vs Hermès story has been misrepresented over the years.
I am SO over it.
@@tuttuttut7758
"Shady and entitled?"
Listen mate you overlook she's a billionaire and it is standard to expect some special treatment from luxury houses if it's just to get some privacy. It was standard to close down or close off a section of a shop while someone famous is there.
I will put it another way. At near closing time would you shut out Jackie Onassis? Some famous billionaire WASP?
Of course bloody not!!!
This is grasping at straws ... isn't it saying 'well don't act entitled even though you're a billionaire, still black, back to where you belong'?
Oprah came from truly humble origins and the fact that she supposedly wanted 'special treatment' from a luxury house to extend the hours just a bit entirely reasonable when she is a famous billionaire?
"After Winfrey's birth, her mother traveled north, and Winfrey spent her first six years living in rural poverty with her maternal grandmother, Hattie Mae (Presley) Lee (April 15, 1900 - February 27, 1963). Her grandmother was so poor that Winfrey often wore dresses made of potato sacks, for which other children made fun of her."
Fact: they failed to recognise her as a famous billionaire and they and apologists like you, put her down for being too uppity?
Open up, Hermès!
.
It’s foul, but it is funny that they’re using the psychology of toxic relationships to keep the girls desperately chasing them like the standard emotionally unavailable man that brings nothing to the table 😂
Good analogy
trauma bonding
People are buying a name not actually the “luxury” craftsmanship once expected of such famed houses. Luxury should be fine materials and impeccable finishing details like pattern matching up at seams and straight stitches etc. I think customers who know what to look for would not buy these brands. Less and less people sew and make things so there is less awareness on what takes time and skill to produce.
my friend worked for Tiffany for 7 years and she left for her family. Now she joined again after it's under LVHM, she said everything is different, she was struggling for sales. because company is more focused on money. Sad story
So sad to hear but not surprised unfortunately.
It’s true! I just got a medium classic flap today with a NEW S/A the former one told me she couldn’t bring in classic flaps from the back for me to see and there was none on the floor! When I tell you it took everything in me not to snap on her 😤
You need to find new things to get upset about. If she didn’t want to sell to you then why pay her wages???
So you dropped 10k at a brand that treated you like schiiiiit?
Okay
You get better treatments buying preloved from sellers like me. I occasionally get brand new/unused bags & sell them $2-4k lower than current right & I treat my customers like kings.
Silver can be coated with rhodium, and it won’t tarnish. As much as Tiffany is now charging for their silver, they should be doing that.
I'm glad you mentioned this. I made a similar comment before having read yours. 😊
Definitely. My Tiffany silver jewellery is so quickly dark when not worn. Never happens with Hermès and DinhVan.
Luxury items have definitely become way overpriced -cheaper materials & quality! They need us not the other way around! They’re going to loose this game!
the scarcity tactic was attempted on us at the tiffany in tokyo japan, they told us the Tiffany Coffee Cups in Bone China, Set of Four in the four shades of pink was only for tokyo for the sakura (cherry blossom) season. i googled tiffany USA and they were there lol. i told them no thank you.
It's interesting.............I think any business should treat anyone who patronizes their business with respect.
Interestingly I have Tiffany silver from about 30 years ago and its going strong
Yes I do too. It does tarnish but I take it to my local store and they clean it for free. A UA-camr I watch said they started charging fir the cleaning service. Not where I’m from.
30 years ago quality was better of course too. Lets not forget that.
It would be interesting to see if the quality declined after the take over (or not). Wouldn’t be surprised
💖 ty Dacob⭐️ your fashion knowlege is so extensive n interesting - love it❣️
Yep Dacob is has a fierce handle on things and is well-connected.
Thank you Jane 🙏🏻🥰💖
@@SuperDacob 😍💞🤩
It is so high handed to say no when there is an available item.
I wonder if Hermes has not the same policy regarding gold jewelry. Men sizes almost dont exist, and it's very awkard to try try some gold jewelry in store as a man. Plus, they refuse to resize even to size 61/ 9'5, which is not that big....
I'd take my money elsewhere, they don't know what job I have, could be a millionaire in tech( wish!!!) ! . Good thought provoking article though x
Hi Dacob. I enjoy listening to you. I admire your knowledge about perfumes. I have been collecting since COVED. I always liked and bought perfumes nice I was young. My daughter liked Red Door by Elizabeth Arden and that is her only perfume and her Signature scent. She picked that up in her teen years as I used to wear it among a few others then. I don’t like it that much now. I have about 400 bottles now among Chanel no. 5 and vintage Coco Chanel, the perfume and the EDP. Thank you for your reviews. 😊
This type of behaviour makes me not like the brand (any brand) or want to purchase from them.
Seems like private luxury parties would be a better experience. I'm not big into luxury but as a child shopping with my grandmother, I used to get an SA assigned to me while she shopped. I had juice and cookies 30 years ago and a pleasant experience. Now it's about mistreating your customers. Why would anyone pay to be treated so poorly. Sounds like fools good
You put the dog in poverty by getting it the Tiffany tag 😂😂 one of my silver Tiffany’s necklaces also tarnished 😢
I had to give a polish to my Elsa Peretti open heart pendant and earrings. But they're fine now. ❤
The. 50s has lesser population. So the proportion of present population vis a vis the number of pieces classified as limited edition must be considered.
Say No! to brends, that don't want to sell you product ( With scarcity in thier sales tactics).
WAGCA, WAGCA😉
I’m grateful I purchased mine back in 2009 and it’s been on my neck since! Im so sad you didn’t love yours. That makes me so sad. 😢
My silver bracelets from Tiffany had not tarnished in over 20 years. I brought them to be polished because I thought I'd give them a nice shine after all these years, put them away, the same as they've been for years.. and they tarnished in less than 6 weeks! At the same time I brought a newer piece to be cleaned because that has tarnished a few times.. put it away and 6 weeks later- black too! I was livid. Not ever touching Tiffany & Co. again or allowing them to touch my items!!!
Also wanted my necklace that is over 20 years old to have an engraving the same as my bracelet- brought to have it done. It was done by a machine and looks like shit compared to my bracket that was engraved by hand all those years ago. RUINED a sentimental necklace. I was so upset. Tiffany & Co is not it for me anymore, the prices have more than doubled for the same pieces I had growing up & now the newer pieces all turn black. Horrible quality.
Of course the 50’s The worst part is when they burn and destroy the unsold goods. I think your Hermes must be coated with Inox so it doesn’t tarnish. Real 925 silver tarnishes. Hence having all the servants polishing it at least once a week. If you don’t polish it , it will oxidize, that is when it is pure pure silver. Now days everything is silver color but not real silver. Silver is a sturdy and flexible material but you have to coat it so it doesn’t tarnish.
Dear Dacob, my newer silver jewelry comes rhodium plated and it does not tarnish. My older silver, and Mexican silver needs the polish cloth now and then, because I don't think the older jewelry is rhodium plated the way white gold and silver are now. So I'm glad they do it. I used to think this cheapened the jewelry until a jeweler told me it's a very good thing. Because rhodium is a kind of platinum, and is the most expensive metal to buy. It keeps your silver and white gold 'white'. Learning this made me happy. ❤
i don't think luxury should be denied. It's the chance to get what you want when you want. You said so yourself, luxury is able to buy/replace something when you needed it.
I say hard pass on the brand that denies customers. Period.
Hi Dacob! What do you think about recent Tiffany&Co collection? They charge from 16k to 22k for titanium! So the actual price of the piece is not even 1k, they get a profit of 2200%
I'm curious if you can find it in some library, I think the book name is : Tiffany & Co. Presentation by Walter Hoving
To me, LVMH is a big box company, and generally when big box companies take over the smaller more personal companies, it changes and usually not for the better. I also think of lux of as a privately own business that specializes in something you cannot get anywhere else but there. That is hard to maintain nowadays. So, LVMH is taking over all these businesses and to me they are like the Home Depot of accessories. I have a few Tiffany pieces that are old and if I buy from them again, it will be a resale item. Have no interest in the big box business.
Luxury store: You say yes. I say NO! You say why? And I say go-go-GO! 👉 🎶🎵
ME: They say goodby, and I say Wugo. Wugo-Wugo. I dont know why they say goodby I say WUGO!
🎶🎵
I'll go...elsewhere! Hah!❤
Id like to read that little book too. Do Rich people really desire to be told No by some pretentious brand? As you said, if you want to, you can buy it at any cost. If I were rich, I would buy quiet luxury. No labels. How about saying No to the middle class and poor? Thats who hear the Nos. Id like to discover a designer just out of design school and commission person design the program
What’s this book? Husband and I want to read it!!! Please and mil gracias 🙏
LV limited edition now means "a seasonally limited edition" like xmas designs, collaborations and the sort. And I will NEVER beg a brand to take my money. Rolex has to do something about their lack of stock as well. Although that doesn't annoy me THAT much because if I want one I will configure it exactly to my liking and am willing to wait the time it takes to get that done for me. But Hermes game? Never ever. I don't even like those hideous little granny bags.
Say no The shame that Tiffany and Co. made some of the Atlas Collection rhodium plated but not all. That’s what makes the Hermès silver so scrumptious it’s been plated with rhodium
We go we go 👌
Interesting how luxury watch maker have followed Tiffany & Co.'s plan and practices.
Well one thing is right why have so many shops is not hogh street shop is brands
It’s not about if your money isn’t good enough, they don’t really need your money. It’s about the prestige of owning something rare and fabulous. If “ Birkin’s “ were massed produced on assembly lines and sold at Walmart , yes most people would not touch it including myself. Hermes Birkin’s are handmade and well designed and are a fabulous piece of history. There are not that many bags made at one time because they are not massed produce with machines . I have shopped at Hermes for years and even when I’m wearing jeans and a tshirt I always feel welcome there.
We, as customers, should say, “No.” The more we do that, the more the companies have to cater to us. The luxury stores that were slammed during the virus are empty now. New stores have come to or expanded in Lenox mall in ATL, Gucci, Fendi, Rolex, AP, Tag Heuer, Tiffany, and a few others, but they are empty. LV is now twice the size they used to be. The mall is packed, but those stores are empty. Neiman Marcus seems busy in shoes and fragrance/cosmetics.
I don’t care what the status is anymore. I stopped supporting brands that are rude, disrespectful or unkind to their customers. It’s my money, not theirs and they’re not producing anything worth coveting. At this point, they don’t deserve our money. I’m over it. I’ll be promoting more indie brands going forward.
luxury is aging. if I see a person, and specifically a woman, wearing all these luxuries in mind mind it automatically ages her. not attractive. love beautiful stuff that make you look sexy without adding age and issues with vanity
True luxury is not a price tag or scarcity, but the quality and craftsmanship that goes into an item/service. Scarcity and price aren't the hallmarks of luxury anymore. The world economy has changed in the last 50 years. There are many more millionaires and billionaires then there were back then. The currently economy pays many people well, and they can afford higher priced goods/services. If you save, a 1st class ticket is no longer out of rich for many. What sets real luxury apart is the quality of goods and services. Will the item last for a generation? Is the food really better than the diner down the street? My rings from the 60's (bought from a respectable jeweller) given to me by my MIL are of better quality then Tiffany or Chanel ring I've looked at. These are things I could pass to my future DILs. I doubt many of these rings made today would last that long.
I would say "No" to the stupid game. They used it as "Scarcity" creates demand, and it works in their favor. I really keen to see the court case and how does it pan out. Yes Tiffany those silver does tarnish. That is why i am not going for these Tiffany silver stuff. Chip off? Wow.. that is bad. Even for Tiffany diamond, the prices are wow...i can get some where else with so much lesser. Thanks for sharing 🤗
The WHO can do one and fro
❤
🥰🥰
girl bye I say no to shirt like this
Ive just started dipping my toe into the Hermes game. I think it depends on the reason for the no. Sometimes when people tell their stories it comes across as bigoted not just a lack of stock. Im surprised they’ve not yet been sued for it. I always feel judged when Im lux shopping. Anywhere else it wouldn’t be acceptable.
Hermes have been good to me so far tbf. I do always feel judged tho. Not sure if they are judging or if just in my head ???? I dont want to have to dress a certain way to go into these stores. Im definitely not a scruffy person but my personal style is quite playful & I dont feel comfortable flashing logo’s like a entry pass to get into these stores to in order to get a good level of service I only want to show up as myself.
I got that same Hermes bracelet a couple of months ago. Ive not taken it off since so been in shower countless times and its still like new. Absolutely love it!
I mean if everyone has it, it isn’t a luxury. Women need to start saying no more 😂
If I get the vibe you are saying "no" for no real reason, I'm done with the brand or anyone for that matter. I have practiced this all my life whether personal or business.
Matt Harnacke the dressage rider - sorry - look him up
first
lol. Don’t do that, and this is why.
It sounds like the haute Tiffany is the true Tiffany of old and Tiffany and Co isn’t really Tiffany at all
So true. The harsh reality!
Times have changed a lot 😫
The Tiffany I used to like and buy is $52-125+K now, it's waaaaaaaaaaaaay beyond any reasonable markup, it's XX digit markup now. And this amount of celeb "ambassadors" to justify it, look at 'em you can be like this too. Nope.
