“Do we need a cake?” This is serious if Joey wants to turn down food.
Exactly what I thought 😂
Well he was not sure of having rhe cake. But once the cake will be bought he is sure he wont share with anyone.
I think the joke was supposed to be that they were spending a lot more on other stuff, and Joey picked the least expensive one to dispute
Turn down paying for food, which is easy to believe.
yeah i thought this too
I feel like this episode is really realistic. Not all friends in the group have much money.
Blade Cade just what i was gonna comment. The most realistic episode of the show imo.
Exactly
The reactions aren't realistic. Or if they are, they're not really good friends. You can't expect your friend to not do the things they want because you can't afford them. Especially when it comes to birthdays
ΑΡΙΣΤΟΤΕΛΗΣ ΛΑΧΑΝΟΠΟΥΛΟΣ you’re a shitty friend if you demand people to spend money on you when they can’t afford to
@@iFruit96 to be fair, its really Monica and Chandler that are planning this whole thing so Ross isn't demanding anything. If anything, he felt bad that all this was done and Phoebe Rachel and Joey couldn't financially keep up
An underrated part of this scene is when Joey lightly elbows Rachel when she rudely says hi to Julie.
Oooh shit yeah, cool small detail
I like how she reciprocated by tapping him with a pillow when he guesses Monica's story.

I’ve always felt like that was more of a Chandler line 🤷🏻♂️
I laughed at this episode until I reached my 20s
Do you still remember which episode that was? 😅
So when you reach your 30s it's not funny anymore?
Just a joke,it's a great episode
same, once u are in this position and cant hang around because other kids have some srsly rich parents and just dont have the fear of spending money.
I always laugh at this no matter my age
This reply is really so heartbreakingly relatable...
I don't know the culture back there in US, but if someone getting promotion here, he/she should pay the meal when they celebrating.
Yeah, for their birthday too. They would get the gift and cake while also paying for going out/celebrating.
Here, in india also same
I was surprised about this difference...why would others pay if I get promotion.
May be it is because of the high expenditure in US all share the bill
Promotion Yes
Birthday!?
@@sureshm1634 In Taiwan, the birthday guy/girl doesn't pay. Others pay for him. But its all the same, you either pay a large amount once or smaller amount many times.
Here if it's your birthday /promotion you pay the bill if you celebrate in a restaurant or something.... Others pay for hosted parties and gifts(birthdays)
Although this is a lighthearted show: As someone with a relatively priveleged upbringing this episode was eye-opening when I first saw it as an 18 year-old. It made me aware that my actions could end up putting unintentional financial pressure on peers by forcing them to make a decision between spending outside of their means or missing out on experience. Since then I've been much more conscious of planning activities that won't put people in difficult monetary positions.
I wish my friend understood this, it took her getting a job and not having money funneled to her as often for her to loosely realize the situation I was in literally all my life (until recently) even though I made it clear to her I had very little
Are you a privileged, white male?
Yes this was very insightful of you. I'm really grateful for people who can be this aware of others having different experiences because most people I've met don't seem to get it no matter how many times I've explained it. :/ We all have different backgrounds
@@elizabeth1703 You benefit from female privilege. Top of the privilege pyramid. I hope you realize that.
One of my relatives faces this frequently with her friends group.
They are struggling financially and they would split d bill equality even if u don't eat much..
So they have to miss out.
I liked the early season smarter Joey better
The writers modified his characters on Leblanc's suggestion
But the level of Joey's stupidity in next seasons is just too much
I agree, I'm one of Friend's biggest fans but I feel the Joey being dumb thing was too much to appreciate, especially since he was quite street smart in the beginning. I also feel once Monica and Chandler got married, Chandler's character had no real growth and felt more like a side character who was just comic relief.
They did it delibrately to show chandler more attractive than him so that monica and chandler would look good, that is the reality that girls choose the most attractive/rich guy otherwise they would have to match her with joey
Well I guess, it is to show that "the more sex you get, the dumber you are" 🤣🤣🤣
Its good to see how tables turned after few seasons. Monica works as a waitress, Ross loses his job, Chandler quits his job. Meanwhile Rachel becomes a big executive, Joey's a big movie star, and Phoebe becomes a masseuse in a big Massage chain.
ross never lost his job, he took a vaction for a few mouths, he was still getting paid.
Okay but by the END-end, Ross literally works as a professor with tenure; Chandler quit his old job (he already had a lot of money saved up) and got a new job in advertising. Monica became as a chef.
so they all doing good.
That's life buddy
@@mugiwara-no-luffy yeah but they mean that they got a taste of being short of money when before that they never had
That awkward moment when Chandler waved at Julie on the phone.
Dork
I think it was a typical Chandler joke.
Well Ross was waving the phone first
It was so cute tho
Season 3 and further Joey wouldn't know what a kidney was.
early season 5 Joey does...
Yeah it annoyed me too when he was talking gibberish. Im with Phoebe on this one
@Ryan Irwin- Diehl it was also weird because in the early seasons Joey knew some french phrases or sex acts in french...
And he probably know what a kidney even does.
His biology isn’t so bad. He knows where his Joey’s Apple is.
This is one of the nicest episode, because they show something really real. Not everyone makes the same, and of course Joey, Rachel and Phoebe makes much less. And this happens to lots of people.
If i had to choose one of them as roomate in my apartment , it would be either Ross or Chandler , so the rent payment would be easier to pay
I would go with Chandler, Ross would be to annoying to deal with.
@Jay Bray Do you not know Joey? O_o

I totally agree.
At first he seems like someone with no common sense, maybe average intelligence. By the end he has even less common sense, and has a IQ of a hot dog.

@MercuryHollow yeah he became stereotype of American guy in the end

Joey, Rachel and Phoebe were going through the "My Job's a joke, I'm broke, my love life's DOA" phase. So am I. 😂
This is inconsistent because chandler would’ve paid for Joey anyway.
Right 😂
I also have a feeling if Rachel asked Monica she would of been ok with paying…if she didn’t get that promotion that is. They have been friends since high school and reconnected later on.
What are you going to do for dinner. Dust Bunnies? Instead of all the food in the fridge that Chandler bought, like usual?
So phoebe has no one to pay for her😢
@@ramiroperez2461 Ross totally would pay for her
What I love most is that when Rachel mockingly says hi to Julie, Joey elbows her leg, but when Joey’s being sarcastic about Monica’s story, Rachel hits him with a pillow. Just a nice little attention to detail I think is sweet! 😊
Man they changed Joey's entire personality from the earlier seasons to the latter ones.
He wasn't excruciatingly dumb through the first few seasons
"How much do you think I can get for my kidney " XD
I also hate to chip in with my friends as I don't drink and they all do when we go NICE PLACE for dinner
vikram chavan voice it.
Yeah don't pay 😂😂😂
I've never paid for something i didn't get, fuck them 😂
We round up our plate by 5 bucks. NO DRINKS just the main course. Most will only get one maybe 2 drinks at the table. Then after we hit the bar.
Put your foot down with them. If you don’t buy any drinks, just sipping on water, then there is no reason to pay the extra for drinks man.
It's rare that we just split the bill into equal parts. But sometimes we go out everyone has a meal in the same price range and then we get a bucket of beer which is 6 bottles of beer in a ice bucket for the price of 5 beer. Since we are usually 5-6 guys everyone gets at least one beer. In that case it makes sense to split the bill so you don't have to keep track that everybody bought one bucket. But usually everyone pays for the things they bought because one in our group doesn't drink and it would be unfair to him.
"like we can afford to go here and there"Joey 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
yes ;p
Here in India, the birthday guy takes out everyone to dinner and pays the bill while others pay for the cake and gifts.
That’s so weird.
Yes that's normal here. Also if someone gets promoted they give a treat to others.
Basically the idea is if you have something to be happy about you're the host that includes everyone else in your happiness and that's not weird at all here. Also everyone attending does bring gifts for the person celebrating.
It's just the culture.
I get if someone is promoted they should be the one to foot the bill, especially of they pick somewhere expensive. But making the birthday person pay is kinda weird. Different cultures I guess.
@@maverick608 that also depends on different groups and circumstances. Maybe if your friends give you birthday surprise like they did for Ross then yes they do bear the expenses. If you're the one hosting the party then you bear expenses. Maybe just depends upon ocassion and people involved.
@@maverick608 It all depends on who hosts the event. If someone has a birthday party and invites ppl they most definitely have to pay for most of it. It all comes down to who chose the venue. You can't just invite ppl to a pricy restaurant and expect them to pay.
Joey is really normal here. He's not the usual dumb slightly slow guy he's depicted to be in the later seasons.
That's because Matt le blanc asked the writers to make him dim witted. He wasn't originally written as a dim character.

Correct me if I'm wrong - Chandler said that everybody owed him 62 dollars, as in 62 dollars per person. A quick search will show that 62 dollars in 1995 is about 105 dollars in 2021 which means that 525 dollars in today's standards were invested for Ross's birthday. That's a very generous amount for all intents and purposes if you ask me.
Cause it's for Ross!
Yeah in New York today that would cover most of his meal.
They ate out at a posh resturant, including a tip, a concert, and a cake. $525 seems not enough ngl
@@stuffwithsoph8264
62 dollars each to pay for the cake, gift and one ticket for Ross, it doesn't include the restaurant. The reataurant was 33$ each (just checked it lol). Let's say they put 20$ each to pay for Ross's concert ticket, that means that in addition to all that, they need a ticket as well, which means it cost 100$. So that's roughly 195$ dollars for everything from every person, which today is 353$. It's about 2k dollars for all 6 friends. That's a fuckload of money for a birthday celebration 😅
@@VlaDuZa It seems like a regular amount for what they're getting, it is however weird they're buying Ross a concert ticket as well as their own

This is the most real and intense episode of Friends. Really liked it.
Is it the most intense episode? Why? There is a lot of real situations) For example, when Joey lost his work and he had to give away his items to bank.
This sounds like a real world friends dilemma.
Oh man, a young Jen Aniston... I just can't put it into words.

Why do people try to act like Jennifer didn't hit her prime in her 20s? That just means she's human.
You can't put it into word, but I can definitely put it into Jennifer Aniston.

@@Xhoven Because she's still a smoke show even today? Yeah, 26-27 year old Jennifer tops 51 year old Jennifer, but even at 51 there are several people I'd take over her without thinking. She's aged magnificently.
$62 per each includes gifts, concert tickets and a cake, that's just so reasonable for me even in the mid 90s. And Phoebe's shirt is fantastic!
But Joey was getting acting job rarely, Rachel is a waitress and Phoebe is a massues.
I thought only $62 each for all that, not bad at all. Might have to save a little here and there, but not a completely unreasonable amount at all.

My most recent case: I like camping but can't go often because of limited budget. My hobby has inspired my friend to go camping too, but he only wants to go if I go, and he wants to go often.
My friend is rich, btw. Inheritance money. So he pesterd me about going camping every other week. If I said I dont have the money yet, he'd offer to cover me until i can pay him back. Good enough. Problem is, he's so used to a higher degree of living that the camping cost would go through the roof than what I'm used to if I go alone,so if I said yes I would end up with owing my friend a lot of money 😅
But I dont really mind. It's better than not having your friends around.
@@tomassoejakto wow, good for u to lke camping, i can never get into it cause i had a terrible camping experience with my school camping trip. Just gotta day that I love your username. Nice to see a fellow iKONIC 😂
That’s what I was thinking. I mean Monica to have at least said “I am taking you all out to dinner” so they wouldn’t have to think that they had to pay for everything!

Haha. In my country, the one who's celebrating normally pays. The friends just bring their own gifts or they team up to get that person something.
For Joey to question whether they needed food...He REALLY must've been hard up for cash. That should've been Chandler's first clue
