Hello Mr. Baz. I like your reviews because they give a sense of how the product will perform in daily use. That is rare these days when most, "reviews", are just advertisements in disguise. The "reviewers" usually do not have much experience using the products. Since your reviews are based on actual experience using the products I trust your opinions. A couple of weeks ago I purchased a Fenix LD30 flashlight. It works well but I discovered it could turn itself on in my gear bag. When I pressed the tail against a flat surface it latched on. It did the same thing when it was in the case. Have you observed a similar action with other Fenix brand lights with a tailswitch?
I've not use the LD30 model, but I know switches can vary in pressure and feel/resistance to turn on. Have you tried unscrewing the head a little that could break the contact enough to stop that being an issue? The Fenix ones I have used including this I didn't have an issue with them turning on, but it depends a lot on how you use them or store/carry them. In a gear bag stuff is likely to hit the switch and that's the problem
@@MrBazReviews Thanks for responding to my message Mr. Baz. There are many reports of LD30s turning themselves on. One bowhunter even had one melt a hole right through his carrying case. What I do not know is if the self-latching switch is only a problem with the LD30 or other Fenix models as well. In my case I was lucky to discover the problem before anything had melted. I read in a Klarus XT21X review, "[...] the thing I love about this holster is that it has a small plastic cap at the bottom of it where the tail switch will nestle in. This little cap prevents the flashlight from accidentally turning on which is essential with an estremely bright flashlight." After reading that review I spent most of a day cutting down a plastic pill bottle with an indented cap to fit in the bottom of my Fenix holster. The insert fixed the problem for me but other LD30 owners may not be aware they could have a meltdown if they do not lock the light out by unscrewing the head a little bit.
@@SuperMurrayb All I would say is if something isn't working out for you, I would get rid of it (sort of applies to many different products really), rather then trying to work around the issue. As I've said I've not used that one, it's possible the spring/mechanism doesn't require much pressure, it just varies quite a bit with some brands/models. Yes Klarus did have a cap in some holsters on some models, to stop that happening. I'd try to find something else that might work better.
@@MrBazReviews Thanks for the advice, Mr. Baz, but my LD30 is working okay. It no longer turns on by itself when carried in its case with the insert that I made. The insert fixed the problem completely. What I do not know is how many flashlights have a similar issue. When you test lights with a tail switch could you press them down on a flat surface to see if they latch on? If they do turn on easily it would benefit your viewers to know which lights need to be mechanically locked out to prevent random turn ons. Locking out is easy but replacing a damaged flashlight head is hard.
@@SuperMurrayb If I see something I mention it, being honest it's much more an issues side switch models. It's not that common to have an easy to press tail/base switch. Least most of the ones I have used I've not had problems. Like I said though I have not used that specific one, but also it's possible samples can vary too, stronger and weaker springs.
I like this light as i have the previous model that is close to this without the usb charge. I prefer the olight s2r baton 2 as in the edc role a little better due to its size and spread of light at closer ranges. Yes there is better distance with the fenix but not enough so my choice would be the olight s2r baton 2 and then something that throes a longer noticeable distance than the fenix in relation to the s2r, like say an olight r50 or something. Having both the fenix and the s2r is pointless as i have them both. Which do you prefer?Great vid
Depends what you use it for if it's mostly up close the wider beam might work better. For general use I find a mixed beam the best choice as it has more range. The Olight is nice though I'm not a fan of custom batteries, though it is included. Design wise a few tweaks to this and it would be spot on. R50 will have a bit more range it's a bigger torch if that matters. The R20 was one that got overlooked very nice range off of that 314m, only 3 power levels worth considering if you find a deal on one
As a Brit, I don't know why it irks me so, when I hear other Brits call them torches lol. Ever since getting into personal lighting, they have overwhelmingly been called Flashlights, so that is what I call them now. It is how I think of them. Torch, to me, is something you coat in oil and burn while visiting a newly uncovered Egyptian tomb lol.
I'm the reverse when you Americanise your own native tongue, you then copy others. That's my view. I once called a light a flashlight, then thought why am I doing this it's "torch". Hence I use torch 100% now. That is how I was taught. I only twice got a complaint, once about that and the other time about "windscreen" instead of "windshield". I think we can understand each other. I don't tell Aussies or Americans how to pronounce words, and erm they don't tell me ;-) I also do photo videos, flashguns are quite different to a flashlights. I call trousers what they are not pants, but I know what it means. BTW about 25% of viewers are from the USA, so as it doesn't bother them it doesn't bother me. I'm not about to start using imperial either, but I sometimes put the numbers in there for them.
@@MachineOak09 Interesting, I had a fellow British guy complain I was using the term "torch". When he said they are universally called "flashlights", on another video. I think we can understand each other. I know what a "hood" means even if I call it bonnet ;-D Thing is to me as I'm into photography a "flash" is a quick burst of light, so a flashlight implies something similar - which it isn't ie a continuous light bar strobe mode. So prefer to call it a torch
@@MrBazReviews Yeah I'm with you. Also I think the British vs American (& vise versa) lingo is very interesting, we both have some funny words we use either way. Great review by the way!
@@MachineOak09 I don't think it matters that much, so it surprised me when a UK speaker said it! Not many complaints from USA viewers; and they are by far the largest audience overall on the channel (25% of all viewers). Bit like metric v imperial, I use mostly metric but on occasion convert to imperial ie show both. Either way I think people can work things out fairly easily. Thanks for the comment newer videos have improved beamshots I am always trying to improve where I can
@Mr Baz Reviews Have you found a torch that you would consider perfect. I really like this light, just wondering if you found one with all the features you were asking for.
To date no not really. This is close but the weedy holster and cooler tint - well if they had a n/w option and beefed up the holster it would be a contender (for this type of light) I like the feel and switches on this light, more so than many others I've used
would be nice if you could charge the batteries by connecting a cable to the flashlight. from what i can see u have to take the batteries out to charge
Hi... thanks for the review. Would you recommend this one or the Nitecore variable switch at a light to use both for a powerful beam and to read in a tent? I mean is the lowest setting on this Fenix ideal for reading?
The Nitecore might be quicker and easier to adjust the output. For tent use you might be better off with a lantern or something like the LR12 here - ua-cam.com/video/XE8inkXXkgE/v-deo.html
It's useful the extending diffuser spreads out the light more. I'd go for something like that myself v a normal light. Other options are camping lamps, but they can't be used as a light (ie spreads it out) the LR12 is quite clever as it can do both
Don't know I'm not getting many torches in these days. I was getting Fenix items from the UK, post Brexit seems to have put the end to that. I do get a few things from Nitecore TM9K Tac is in
Mr Baz Reviews you don’t explain anything there. It’s my understanding that you have to use 18650 batteries for this feature to work. I’m using cr123 rechargeable. Can you confirm this? Also from reading elsewhere it shows the battery indication every time you turn on the light for 3 seconds? And really, thanks for the help. I just got one of these.
@@MrBazReviews my thoughts exactly, not going for the warrior X, happy with m2r though for a larger edc light. How do you rank olight m2r Vs pd35 V2. What would be your first pick?
I like the M2R though the beam is fairly floody, not that I mind just range wise it's not as tactical as some expected. I think they showed a smooth reflector on the pre-production changed to a textured. Don't know why they made that move. It's a nice torch this is quite different in operation and design just a few tweaks and it would be right up there, it's close though. PD35 might make a better general purpose light
@@MrBazReviews I agree that with those tweaks it would be even more compelling. Don't know why with fenix and olight, some they'll offer NW, then on more they won't, why not offer everyodel in cool or neutral. Do like the direct access to lows and highs which olight is very good for. Whats next on my radar is an eagle tac d25lc2 tactical. It's more compact than most of the competition with 18650 and tint options which is why I'm keen. You any experience with them, thanks, (know we're off topic now)🤣
@@stevo1166 I've not used any eagle tac ones so hard to comment, some look nice from what I have seen. Maybe later on I'll be able to get hold of some. I don't know why so few N/W on some torches very easy to offer it just drop the LED in there job done seems sensible unless they think the demand is low?. If they adjusted a few things on this nicer holster and base/tail stand and a nice N/W easily would be my personal choice for a daily carry just like the feel of it. That counts for a lot sometimes not just pure output
