- Trigun is a classic anime, one of my favorite. Between Vash the Stampede and Nicholas D. Wolfwood, two of anime's finest characters and their intimate connection between each other isn't discussed enough!

Trigun is filled with religious symbolism, yet it's not the type of show I would call religious. Trigun uses religion as a means to explain it's point of view on humanity. On the struggles we face between good an evil, between idealism and pragmatism, between trusting only yourself and having faith in others. It's a bittersweet journey that Vash takes, splattered with friends and enemies alike, yet in the center of it all is a triangle of three men: Vash, Wolfwood and Knives. And these three represent to true struggle humanity faces on a daily basis.

Hi, thanks for watching! Tyler worked hard on this script and he and Axel Beats edited while I was away on a little vacation this week. I got home just intime to do post production and start writing another release for THIS WEDNESDAY (5/4) on Castlevania. It's going to be a big one, so I hope you guys remember, cause it's unlikely UA-cam will remind you! Anyway, it's been two years since we covered Trigun, I hope you made it through the video and enjoyed the whole thing, and hopefully it won't be as long before we cover it again. There's always more to say about a series like this.
Don't forget about Gfuel ( code: Bpop ) and of course patreon!
Have a great weekend and hopefully i'll see you Wednesday afternoon for some awesome Castlevania content!

8:39 I'm from Alabama what did we do 😭
@@kristopherwillis8075 likely something in recent politics. Im kinda surprised they went Alabama instead of Florida (maybe to easy of a target) or Texas (we deserve the hate)
yea the fucking virtue signaling is too much for me ive followed this channel for a long time but im out
@@raingang8720 OK, bye. I would say we'll miss you, but we won't.
@@raingang8720 good lol
In Wolfwood's defense, it's easier to see the good in everyone when you are an immortal being (which Vash is). And as soon as he adopts Vash's ideas, he dies. So in a sense it is Vash's ideals that killed him. Such a great character. Both of them
Perfect explaining of it vash is the reason wolfwood dies and he knows it. its why he breaks down and cries.
Wolfwood's sins (bad choices) killed him in the end, but before death he was redeemed through choosing the right path.
I always took away, the only people that could be Vash and Knives was Vash and Knives.
Yall are wrong because if it wasn't for legato's basically divine intervention, wolfwood would've lived
Idk about immortality necessarily making you feel better about the inherent good in people. Look how many immortals in fiction get philosophical and ambivalent about life.
The line "dammit I don't wanna die" is when that punch to the gut connects, so I wouldn't want it removed. I don't think it undermines the peace Wolfwood found in the end either. He just wanted some more time with his friends.
I would also argue it is him wanting more time to live with his new outlook on life which was relatively short in comparison to pessimistic and cautious approach he had before.
And can we please give props to Johnny Young Bosh for making Vash that much more lovable for the English dub, he gives such life to every character, but Vash, he really conveys everything he feels, all the joys, pains, sorrows, and happy times, I really can't see anyone else doing the role justice
And what makes it all the more impressive is that it was his first ever voice-over role. You can certainly tell he's green in a few areas but still delivered a fantastic performance for the most part - an unpolished gem that only grew better with time.
@@justoneguy2487 technically his second, he voiced kaneda in Akira, but you are totally correct in him getting better over time and an absolute gem
@@blacksann01 Actually, that's incorrect. The Trigun dub released in 2000 whereas the new Akira dub dropped a year later 2001. JYB himself even mentioned in one interview with Red Carpet News that Vash was his first role.
There is a chance he may have recorded Kaneda's lines first before Vash's but even if that is true, it is irrelevant - Trigun would have been the first time the world heard his voice in an anime and is thus his true debut, which even he himself considers to be the case.
(and it would have been his first series role anyway)
Definitive and quintessential Johnny Yong Bosch VA imo lol
@@justoneguy2487 How is that irrelevant? They’re literally talking about how he’s gotten better through his experience…..
Trigun does not get as much love as it deserves, both from anime fans and the industry. Trigun Maximum needs to be adapted along the same lines as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and the ever-elusive Soul Eater: Resonance. It's too visually and thematically engaging to remain as overlooked as it is.
I really want to see Wolfwood vs Livio and Razlo animated so badly.
Yezzir
Amen to that
Congrats there going to do it 😂
Instead, we're getting the zoomer cringe called Trigun Stampede.
I like how great Vash is as a pacifist. The author doesn't take it easy on Vash and you see how he fights to do ANY AND EVERY SINGLE THING BUT kill. His actions do all the talking and, yeah, if any one could call you out on this... it's him.
In the end though he realized his ideology was flawed not everything is black and white and sometimes difficult choices have to be made. You can’t save both the spider and the butterfly, that’s why he left his coat behind in the final shot of the final episode. He was leaving rens ideology behind in order to forge his own
The final words in the anime are something like "While I still believe in Rem, I'll start thinking for myself from now on." It shows how he's learned from both Knives and Wolfwood, that he was to idealistic. I think you covered that pretty well
Ultimately in the end, I think he adopted Wolfwood's ideals rather than what the channel guy is saying which is the other way around.
Wolfwood's death might be the first time I ugly cried during an anime.
Same
That death, and Vash's scream in reaction, made me ugly cry so hard I paused my disc and sobbed into my hands. My dad came running in because he thought I was seriously hurt and he'd never heard me cry like that since I was a child. I was 17 at the time.
Wolfwood such a man of faith carrying that big ass cross gun and Vash all about that LOVE & PEACE ✌
I grew up with the 90s anime. i missed out on cowboy bebop because the cover of trigun appealed to me more. so as a young kid with little money i had to choose you know? i was never let down by Trigun. i still love the series and love the manga even more.
You have no excuse unless you didn't have Cartoon Network in the 2000s, because Cowboy Bebop played countless times on Adult Swim, until Toonami rebooted.
@@lainiwakura1776 no I meant i watched it later. i just missed out on its initial release in 97? cowboy bebop is a show i love dearly. but Triguns themes hit harder for me. I felt when i chose between the two i didnt miss out. but yeah cowboy bebop aired in September 2001 on toonami as it was when i started college.
To me, most of Cowboy Bebop's individual episodes are stronger than Trigun's individual episodes, but I prefer Trigun because the overall story amd narrative is better.
(Nothing wrong with either. Bebop's episodes each covering a different genre made it a true love letter to Cinema, but Trigun just has a grip on my heart, so... yeah. Good call :)
@@ignorethis214 I agree. i think between the two, cowboy bebop has tbe strongest single episode stories.
I grew up in a baptist house and school, I've also watched Trigun about five times, yet for some reason, I never once considered Vash to be an analogy for Christ, weird.
I mean, I knew it had religious themes, kinda hard to miss actually, but after watching this I find it weird I never made the connection
same here never crossed my mind
@@davidwoodard665 “crossed” your mind. I see what you did there.
It crossed my mind a couple times but I would never have guessed it since christianity isn't popular in anime.
yeah I think this dude is overthinking it or projecting his own thought into the story.
Superior beings considered as gods? Even early superman had a christian tone, but the main character is always the Savior/Messiah
I've watched this show in full so many times, and I've never considered Vash to be a Jesus allegory. When you point it out it all makes sense, but I think I've always taken it at face value of 2 immortal brothers fighting over what is truly important. Of course what each of them consider important differs and that's what makes it so dynamic. I see each of their outfits as fitting to their personality. Vashs' costume is black to represent his guilt and the burdens he carries, where as Knives is white because what he does doesn't bother him and he sees himself as saving the world, that is, the actual planet itself. But I do give Knives kudos for actually wanting his brother to be a part of the plan, he could have easily taken out Vash whenever but he did care about him, in roundabout way.
Been a fan of the anime for a long time and I feel pretty similar. Never once did I ever take Vash to be a Christ figure. I respect The view and can see it... But also feel like it misses a lot of the major themes of the story and simplifies them.
Except that's the point, like it was very intentional the way it was written to have religious tones. Many characters are christ-like, Superman is one of them. @@dnegron8
90s kid here,Trigun is epic. The desert setting & tech of this world made this anime unique. My first San Diego ComicCon trip (2010) we saw the Trigun Film with my friends. Glad you're covering this anime. I rank "Sound Life" in my top anime songs. I like trigun... maybe someday I'll get an animation cel for that series... we'll see. ♡
Wolfwood is probably one of my favorite anime characters, he was the background of my first MacBook. Plus his cross is so heavy cause it’s so full of hope is just dope.
*his cross is full of mercy
Thanks I haven’t watch Trigun in about 15years
This show will always remind me of being a teenager, watching Adult Swim late at night, thinking "damn, anime is deep."
Good times.
Also, I love how Vash doesn't even fire his gun until episode 5... I didn't even notice it the first time i watched the series.
I CAME AS SOON AS I HEARD YESSSSS! I LOVE TRIGUN!!!!!
Nice another Trigun Video. To me Vash And Wolfwood have one of the best dynamics I’ve seen in anime(probably one of my top 5 favorite duos in anime). I just really like how they both have a strong influence on each other.
Absolutely agree. The common denominator between them is genuine compassion, but the way they must deliver that compassion is what really makes their relationship unique.
Out of curiosity who would your others be
Digging the Wild Arms music in the background of this one. Fits Trigun's vibe perfectly
Love it. Wild ARMS 2 is amazing and the picture of Vash in the game is something I'll never forget.
Honestly this video makes me wanna go rewatch Trigun, such a great series and I think you spoke on it beautifully.
Shout out to Bonsai Pop for dropping really dope content lately. Love how you guys brush upon all the religious, existential and philosophical aspects of Trigun here and there. Keep up the good work. Loved this anime since I saw in premiere on Adult Swim in 2003. Wolfwood's death def still hits everytime you watch the series.
Wolfwoods death hit hard when I was a teen watching this... and it still is honestly.
Vash is truly up there for one of the best characters in manga and anime
Nice. The anime of my childhood.
They're only chasing safety, was an amazing album. A Trigun video with an underoath reference in it, I feel like my birthday came early this year!
This show is definitely my top 5 in anime if not my top 3. I always loved the character Vash and actually hold him as the gold standard as the ultimate hero and have a hard time getting into a lot of anime because I want protagonists to be as high quality as him. His projection of kindness and silliness regardless of how he is treated. His ability to love and care for those regardless to people invoking harm or distain for him, or loving him back, is something you don’t see in most characters. I agree he does project a lot of Christ like characteristics in this way. “Love and Peace ✌🏻” is his mantra and doesn’t shift from it on the daily. I do also like protagonists who are strong and know who they are, even though they aren’t always kind but grow into it, characters like Mugen and Jin via Samurai Champloo or Spike in Cowboy bebop. But Vash is simply selfless from the get go and I can’t think of an anime character on a high level good guy as him. He is refreshing and different, kind of inspiring to emulate his behavior, which is why he is one of my favorite characters of all time.
Sanji? Maybe Luffy? But as cool as Vash I dunno that’s tough for me. I live trigun and it’s in my top 10 because of how awesome Vash is to me. His speech with the drunk gun maker is one of my favorite anime moments ever
Kuwabara?
You said it beautifully, agreed completely! Vash is one of a kind, a TRUE superhero to imitate. Really makes you think^^
"Don't tell your mother I dropped you, Lucifer," oh no laughing too hard
one of the best anime ever on par with cowboy bebop
I've owned the Box set of Trigun since the early 2000s, I imported it after it aired on Toonami. I've lost count of the number of times I've watched it and it still holds up amazingly well. Most of my friends only liked the first half with all the action and fights, which I always found incredibly ironic. The later themes and existential thoughts were what really drew me into anime and I've been a fan ever since. Great write up as always and you're so much better than Mothers Basement, no shade intended.
It's funny you mentioned the two halves. That's such a good observation in general to halve it. The action drew me in at first but the later "themes" is what got me totally hooked (I hadn't seen much anime at that point and I was so pleasantly surprised at where the series went)
FINALLY!! Haven't seen the video yet, but I suspect it deals with the same topic that I've been wanting you to cover ever since your first Trigun video; the dicotomy of Vash's deontological foolishness and Wolfwood's pragmatic utilitarianism. Really excited for this one, Trigun's takes on morality are what make it my favorite show of all time :)
Kirkegaard dude.. he's the key. See my comments above (or are they below now).
Judas was paid in double dollars we know this. It's how Jesus got clapped.
Dont forget the kiss of betrayal lol
That is certainly one way to describe it
OMG YEEESSS I LOVE TRIGUN!!! It's my favorite anime of all time and Vash the Stampede is my husbando 😍 I'm not religious at all. In fact I'm an athiest. But the way Trigun explores the morality of pacifism in a cruel world is so compelling and thought provoking. The way the religious themes are explored don't feel preachy or forced, and I LOVE THAT!! Vash the Stampede is a pacifist done right because the anime actually shows you the amount of pain it causes him.
This content flow has been insane! you guys promised and have been DELIVERING.

Why doesn’t this channel have as many subs and views and MB? It doesn’t make sense. I love this channel. It makes such good videos.
Keep up the good work my dudes.
Because they are liberals....and spew stupid stuff.
Why do I keep seeing that there are replies to my comments but no actual comments under them?
probably because he begs for money alot, vitue signals, and puts his political view into some of these analysis videos.........
but no drink the Kool-aid fam its fine i swear.
Wolfwood has always been one of those characters that just ...he may not be on your top 10 every time but should always get a honorable mention the growth and devopment he achieves is so good he is one of those characters you carry with you long after the show
Well said. Very much a character that sticks with you.
Ive been waiting my whole life for this moment.
I've never put the two themes together like that. But it make sense! "Love & peace", keep up the good work
I see Trigun, i see bonsaipop, i hit the like button.
I can still remember watching Trigun for the first time on a cold night in the winter of 2002; as well as Inuyasha, Cowboy Bebop and Big-O.
And even though I grew up watching shows like Voltron on television and Speed Racer, Battleship Yamato and Battle of the Planets on VHS tapes that my cousin owned, none of them compared to that AdultSwim lineup that had had me fall in love with anime.
Yes please 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
**outlaw star??
It’s Spike and Vash for me.
I don't think trigun is the black sheep, i've heard much more about trigun than outlaw star
That's what I was thinking. I also find that Outlaw Star has aged very poorly. Gene just really sucks as a character. The world building of Outlaw Star is really cool, but the substance in that world is lacking.
YUUUUUS! I love Trigun!
I don't remember if the ost on the video is Wild Arms or Arc the Lad, but both fit extremely well
Great analysis as always! Love that you came back to Trigun
Time for a rewatch, thanks bud!
Crazy how I just finished rewatching this series today and you guys make an upload about it aswell. I love the dynamic between these 2
Holy shit! (Pun intended) This was an incredible analysis! I have grown up loving Trigun and never put it together! Picked up hints, but Wow! Great work ! Thanks for driving in to Animes like Trigun that are often over looked!
just finished it. Hell of an anime. Up there with bebop in my opinion. The tone shift when legato shows up got me hooked.
Great video, as always. Trigun holds a special place in my heart since it first aired on Toonami. One of those anime that often had inconsistent animation and a so-so dub, but the story was gripping. As father of two blonde twin boys, the scene where Rem sacrifices herself with the final words "Vash, take care of Knives" hits different.
Thanks guys for all the work you have all been doing!
I LOVE waking up on Saturday morning and getting a new Bonsai pop video.
KEEP IT UP 🤘🤘
So this is the episode that did it for me, and realized I need to be supporting y'all on patreon. Thank you for making these amazing videos.
Trigun is so GOATed and underrated. Glad to see it get some love.
P.S.- Thank you for making these videos, you really strike at the heart of what makes these shows so special to us fans; you have a really quite a talent.
How often do l make jokes about chemistry? Periodically.
I love that this was a trigun video AND a low key Wild Arms music showcase.
Your first Trigun video was the first of yours I saw and I can't understate how much I love the way you extract the deeper themes from anime. You're just consistently amazing.
great video always stay on the alert for new drops
FINALY A VIDEO THAT EXPLAINS MY BELIEFS!! faith in the person and people but had on the bat.
Yessssss. You should also check out blood blockade battlefront beyond nightow other creation
I didn’t know I needed this. Brilliant video thank you
I’m happy to see the channel grow , I will always be a fan .
Thanks for another one Mike
I saw a few eps of Trigun years ago, and I remember parts of Trigun Badlands Rumble. This was a great breakdown as usual
Next to the great video the Wild Arms music was an amazing touch!
Always love when Bonsai Pop puts out a video and does deeper dives into meaning and just your love of the series/subject. Never regret being a Patron. Trigun has been a favorite for a long time and I'm glad you did more with it! It's interesting to look into the theme of idealism vs Practicality and always a good topic. Keep up the good work Bonsai Pop!
Loved the video. Always good to see one of these anime explored more.
Trigun has been on my to watch list for so long and this video finally pushed me to give it a try, I'll check it out right now. The video itself is do interesting, i would have never thought of the things you talked about here and it made so much more curious of this anime. Great job bonsai team!
(Btw I'm glad you treat your editors so well, I love Lines in motion, their videos are so good and comfy and I love their edits so I'm happy to see that your editors get what they deserve ❤️)
Hi Yuki! Just wanted you to know that I've been editing for people for nearly 7 years and the Bonsai lads treat me better than anyone else i've ever worked for. It's an absolute pleasure to be working with them, and it makes super happy to hear you care about editors
Definitely watch it. It’s so amazing
eating good with the bpop content lately
hell yea
Happy you talked about my favourite anime! Clicked on this video so quick
I remember seeing trigun a longgg time ago. And I’ll be honest alot of the deeper meaning was lost on me. But after revisiting it I see it in a totally different light. Still a very gd one. Great video guys… as always
Lets go! Another bonsai pop!
I’ve been waiting for this video for so long, I love Trigun and I love your channel. Keep up the great work!
Dope video as always man
Wolfwood does not kill Zazie the Beast. He is killed by Caine the Longshot, though Wolfwood was prepared to kill Zazie. He hadn’t quite made up his mind, but he took the blame onto himself willingly
This is absolutely false. Wolfwood killed Zazie. The shot switches to him holding his cross punisher with a smoking barrel. Caine doesn’t show up til the next episode.
i just got to say i love your videos and this is one of the best you’ve made so far
Great video as usual dudes.
I love the writing and the way you both convey these themes. Guess it’s time for another rewatch.
Bonsai Pop is seriously underrated and so is Trigun.
Damn, just finished the episode where wolf wood dies. Not a lot of shows I watch get me attached to the characters. One of my favorite games is ending and the characters in the ip will likely never appear again. Was already kind of down but seeing Wolfwood’s death didn’t really help. Heard manga was different, only to do a quick search to see he still dies in it :( . Glad to see there still is stuff being made for trigun though.
This show still holds a piece of my heart after all these years, and that scene never fails to break it
another awesome one!
Great vid as usual, frens!
Trigun is the greatest anime of all time. Thank you for doing another video on it.
This is my second favorite anime of all time and the show that got me into anime--I still have my original bootleg copy--and I can honestly say this video broke it down in a way I'd never thought about before. Phenomenal job. Keep up the great work! Really looking forward to that Castlevania episode.
Great job guy’s, loved the video 👍🏾
Thanks for this. I gotta do a rewatch now.
Watching this as a kid I never thought about all the Christian undertones and all the Christian symbolism.
Sweet I was waiting for this for about year.
Literally rewatch this series once a year! Loved the thematic breakdown
Love this damn anime. Great job on the Wild Arms music selection. Very fitting
Love your vids Mike and Tyler
I've never clicked on a video so fast 💙
I have always thought along these line just couldn't put it Into words. Great job.
This is arguably better than the 1st video. I don't know which I like better. Kudos as always💪💪💪I swear if I had more this would be the 1st patreon I'd join yal really fkn deserve it
That music in the background is from wild arms 3...that was one of my favorite RPGs ever
The use of Wild Arms ost was perfect!
Can I just say that using Wild Arms music really underlines the theme, given how similar the themes parallel in that game?
Thanks for the vid
I really love this channel
I don't usually comment on youtube videos, but I wanted to let you know that hearing the Wild Arms soundtrack in the background put a warm smile on my face. For many of us growing up, we played that game imagining that it was set in the world of Trigun.
Thank you.
